Gracious Grenache By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

This versatile grape creates some of the world’s tastiest, most budget-friendly wines. Most winemakers agree that the Grenache grape is one of the most versatile tools in the vintner’s toolbox. This red wine grape, which is responsible for some of the most delicious and collectable wines in the world, is also the main ingredient in some of the best budgetfriendly wines. Thus, it’s not surprising that Grenache is one of the most widely planted red grape varieties around the globe. Originating in Spain, Grenache is widely cultivated in France, Sicily, California and Australia. More recently, China, Mexico and Israel are also harvesting By TUBS - Own work. CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons. this ubiquiwikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=14520269 tous grape. Most Grenache wine regions also produce impressive Grenache rosé wines. Grenache is the only world-class grape that can get away with tasting like a candied fruit roll-up, allowing blind taste testers to immediately detect its presence. Despite its light color, it has a medium-bodied taste. Factors such as regional winemaking requirements, climate and other blending grapes all go into the versatility of this iconic grape. Garnacha, as it is referred to in Spain, was born in the region known as Aragon. The area’s warm, dry climate allows this late-ripening grape to attain high sugar levels that translate into high alcohol levels. Calatayud, a subregion of Aragon and Priorat, produces the quintessential Spanish Garnacha. Young versions have the flavor of candied fruit, while aged wines produce a mellow, sophisticated taste with hints of spice. In Spain, Grenache is often blended with the Tempranillo grape to give Spanish Rioja its juicy fruitiness and body. Grenache found its way over the Pyrenees through the 14 Island Events August 2019

Languedoc and to the Southern Rhone region of France, where French winemakers were looking for a grape that could be blended with other famous varieties of the region. The grape they sought would add body, alcohol and fruity flavors to their wines. They found that grape in Grenache, and it was there that the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine blend was born. Meanwhile, in the United States, Grenache had a story similar to Zinfandel. The early California wine industry relegated Grenache to a blending element for jug wine production. Most of the plantings were in the hot central San Joaquin Valley, which is wellsuited to the grape’s natural heat and drought tolerance. It was also used to produce a sweet, pale White Grenache that tastes very similar to White Zinfandel. In the late twentieth century, a group of California winemakers formed a group called the Rhone Rangers, whose mission was to cultivate French Rhone Valley grapes and create wines with a level of sophistication that would rival their French counterparts. This mission was ultimately a great success, and Island Winery enjoys the fruits of their labor. At times, we blend California Grenache with Mouvedre — a dark, meaty Rhone varietal — to create a blend we call Joe’s Reserve. Other times, we bottle Grenache on its own as a light, fruity summertime wine. So, the next time you visit your local wine shop, browse the aisles and you will find that no matter which country or section you explore, you will always find a bottle containing Grenache. The perfect bottle of handcrafted artisan wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Rd. Wine by the glass, cheese platters and $5 tastings are available Monday-Saturday from 12:30-5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or www.islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. 1520s

Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton's Headland.”

1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North's blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Late 1950s

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island's distinctive character. hiltonhead.com

Conquistadors explored the area.

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Today Fraser's legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly sea island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm -- all in one unforgettable destination. Neptune K Statue

at Shelter Cove Harbour he towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a largerthan-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.

T

Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge. When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot-wide base, the numbers indicate the precise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundial, the statue was originally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey, and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measure ments before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time. They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star. An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights generations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to experience a true Hilton Head Island icon.

he Harbour Town Lighthouse, which was completed in 1970, is the first privately financed lighthouse built since the early 1800s. Nicknamed “Fraser’s Folly,“ Charles Fraser, the visionary developer of The Sea Pines Resort, believed a distinctive landmark, along with a professional golf tournament, would generate interest in the fledgling seaside community. As usual, Fraser was right, and today the candy-striped, hexagonal structure has become synonymous with Hilton Head Island.

Harbour Town Lighthouse This landmark rises 93 feet above the Calibogue Sound and frames the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links.

Rising 93 feet above the Calibogue Sound and framing the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links, the red-and-white striped lighthouse guides golfers off the tee. The backdrop for one of golf’s most picturesque finishing holes, #18 was once part of the $1 million Kodak Challenge, a celebration of “the beautiful holes and memorable moments in golf.” Panoramic views of the Harbour Town Yacht Basin and Golf Links, the Liberty Oak, Calibogue Sound and Daufuskie Island, are just one reason to climb the 114 stairs to the top of the lighthouse. Along the way, the Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum offers a self-guided “climb through time” with displays and artifacts showcasing various stages of Hilton Head history. Offering a unique “elevated” shopping experience, The Top of the Lighthouse Shop features over 2,000 items, including Crystal World lighthouse figurines, Harbour Lights collectibles, Christmas ornaments, Trollbeads and local art and photography. Wave to family and friends via the webcam, or visit harbourtownlighthouse.com to zoom in on the yacht basin, the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links or the Liberty Oak, where family favorite Gregg Russell has entertained generations of visitors for more than four decades. The Harbour Town Lighthouse is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. until sundown. Admission is $4.50 per person, free for ages 5 and under. Accommodating up to 40 people, the lighthouse may also be reserved for private parties and functions. (843) 671-2810, (866) 305-9814 or harbourtownlighthouse.com. hiltonhead.com

August 2019 Island Events 45

Horoscope August 2019 ARIES Let your imagination run wild. What does your future look like? Head in that direction and don’t let anyone or anything hold you back. Living your best life is a challenge, but there’s nothing more exciting to work toward this month. TAURUS Watch out for the reel in your head. Is it mostly positive or negative? Work on replacing the thoughts that weigh you down with happier thoughts or affirmations. Then practice pushing the reel aside and staying present. GEMINI Recently, you started down a path toward growth. Keep working at it, and eventually you will hit on the program or mindset that's best for you. Even if it’s just another step to your next path, your daily life will see dramatic changes. CANCER Your time is being devoured by an unseen predator: the needs of others. If it’s not urgent, move it down the list where it belongs. Set priorities and don’t be afraid to get your own stuff done first. LEO Take stock of how well you are (or aren't) treating your body. Make an effort to eat and drink healthier this month and to keep your body moving. There is something for you at work that you’re missing. Sniff it out. VIRGO This month, you may find yourself wondering just what it is you contribute to the world at large. Look for areas where you could do good work. Open your heart to people around you, and you will start to see love everywhere. 46 Island Events August 2019

LIBRA You complain of not having enough time for everything. There is time, but you've got to work on your prioritization skills. Go to bed at a decent hour, and wake up earlier. An entire hour with a fresh brain and no distractions could lead to some big changes at work and at home. SCORPIO We hear a lot about taking deep breaths to calm down, but breathing deeply can do so much more. It improves circulation, alleviates stress, lowers your blood pressure and can even improve confidence. When you’re overloaded, remember to breathe. You’ll feel your stress start to melt away. SAGITTARIUS Beware of promises made by a silver-tongued Gemini this month. Don’t be afraid to take a risk at work. Take a break from your phone whenever possible, and experience a sense of peace. CAPRICORN Don’t be overly focused on money. If you're too busy thinking about it to enjoy your life, it can become a trap. Take the time to get to know someone at work better this month. You’ll be glad you did. AQUARIUS You're holding on to something that's eating you up. Find a way to let it go. Rekindle your connection with loved ones you hold dear. They will be happy to know that you care. PISCES This month may pose some challenges in your love life. Listen to what your loved one is trying to tell you. Paying attention to your partner will do wonders. hiltonhead.com

From Broad Creek to the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, freshwater lagoons to brackish backwaters, you’re just moments away from a great day on the water.

LAUNCH & LAND

A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and ecotours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Explore the famous candy-striped Lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean charm of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West atmosphere of Palmetto Bay Marina and the hidden charms of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.

MAKE A SPLASH

Jump on a jet ski or waverunner and whiz across the water on an adventure around the Island, or try tubing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kneeboarding and skurfing with a USCG-certified captain. It’s fast, fun and a sure way to keep your cool on sizzling summer days.

GET ON BOARD

The sport of choice for ancient Hawaiians and modern Hollywood hipsters, standup paddleboarding (SUP) is making waves in the Lowcountry. Easy to learn and a great workout, take a few lessons before heading out for a yoga class, nature tour, moonlight paddle, fireworks trip or race. Of course, thrill seekers can still catch waves on traditional surfboards, skim boards and boogie boards.

SET SAIL

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, battle pirates on a swash-buckling adventure, catch the seasonal fireworks displays from the water, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat and play your way.

PADDLE AWAY

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments, or your fishing pole to catch a delicious dinner.

GO WILD

A natural setting for adventure, discover the wild side of the Island and the amazing array of animals that call it home. Depart on a dolphin-watching trip, shark-fishing excursion, alligator adventure, turtle talk and walk or bird-watching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.

FLY HIGH

Soar hundreds of feet above the water on a parasailing trip, get a bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure ziplining through majestic oaks and pine trees at water’s edge.

REEL FUN

Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep-sea or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots, drop a line from a kayak or into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing to see what you can catch.

HIT THE BEACH

The Island’s 12 miles of hardpacked, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, in any season. Rent a bike, splash in the surf, fly a kite, build castles in the sand or simply relax on a rented beach chair under an umbrella with a good book in hand.

WHAT to KNOW

on sland I d a e ilton H

H

Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic—don’t stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.

hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Pickleball Hub

By Mark Anders, Head Pickleball Pro, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

Palmetto Dunes Pickleball Center has become the hub of pickleball activity on Hilton Head Island. There is no other venue that offers Island guests and residents the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in this sport that is taking the country by storm. In the past four years, Palmetto Dunes has introduced pickleball to approximately 4,500 people through introductory pickleball clinics. The goal in these clinics is to provide new players with a solid foundation in the sport, and to become familiar with its rules and basic strategies, so that they may feel comfortable joining drop-in programs in their local communities. This year, Palmetto Dunes rolled out a new set of clinic programs called the Daily Dose. This series of five clinics, which is repeated each week, concentrates on the nuances of the game and is essential to improving your skill hiltonhead.com

level. The adage that practice makes perfect is simply not true — PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! Come learn the effective strategies and techniques that are essential to improving your game from some of the best instructors in the sport, including Sarah Ansboury, Palmetto Dunes’ Touring Professional and Director of Pickleball Instruction, who is one of the top female players in the game today. Daily Dose clinics are offered Monday through Friday from 9-10 a.m. Make sure to stay for the pro-supervised round robin, which immediately follows, to practice those newly learned skills. Want to learn more about pickleball or just improve your game? Join the Palmetto Dunes Pickleball Facebook group, where you can interact with other players and learn about all things pickleball with Sarah Ansboury and other Palmetto Dunes pickleball pros. Check out Palmetto Dunes Pickleball Center reviews on TripAdvisor, Google or Yelp. Hilton Head O F N I R Island INSIDE NEVER feed the alligators! Death, serious injury and jail time are just a few of the reasons we don't feed the alligators. Alligators become aggressive when they think food is coming. Feeding an alligator once from a distance can ruin it for someone else.

Offshore shark fishing ONLY!

Of course we don't want to attract sharks to swimming areas. The law prohibits baiting or fishing for shark from the beach and 400 yards or fewer from any shore. There is also no fishing in swimming areas or from the beaches anytime during daylight hours between April and September.

DON’T mess with the natives

The law protects beach-dwelling sea creatures. Hurting, bothering or even picking up the live ones could result in a fine of $500. This includes sand dollars, conch shells and especially turtles!

Speaking of sea turtles, here's what you need to know: NEVER INTERFERE with a sea turtle!

The endangered loggerhead turtles lay their eggs in nests on HHI's beaches. It's important that tourists and locals alike do their best to keep their impact minimal. Don't get close to them, shine lights on them, touch them or their eggs, feed them or get anywhere near their nests. You could face up to a $15,000 fine and even jail time!

NO LIGHTS on or near the beach!

Nighttime on the beach is a crucial time for baby turtles and any lights that can be seen from the beach can be fatal to these little guys. When they hatch, they must head directly to the ocean or die. Artificial lights (even flashlights or the flash from a camera!) confuse them, and can cause them to head in the opposite direction. Nesting season is between May and the end of October. If any of your houselights can be seen from the beach, they need to be off or invisible from the beach by 10 p.m. during this time.

If you see something that looks amiss, CALL THE EXPERTS! If a sea turtle is injured or dead, or you see a nest that has clearly been tampered with or someone is actively bothering with a nest or a turtle, call the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources at (800) 922-5431.

LEAVE the beach the way you found it!

So your sandcastle is your masterpiece. Understood. But this is literally life or death for these turtles. An obstacle on the beach can cause a mama sea turtle to go back to the ocean instead of laying her eggs. Anything left on the beach that doesn't belong there can cause problems for both mama and baby turtles, so grab every last piece of your gear and trash and fill and smooth any holes you've made.

SET SAIL ON A FAMILY ADVENTURE) PERFECT FOR AGES 3 - 10

Watch as we transform the children into our pirate crew! It starts with face painting, a tattoo and a brand new pirate name! Than we head out on the open seas aboard the Black Sparrow in search of treasure. There are other pirates about and a battle is sure to ensue. All pirates will have to man the water cannons and do battle with our arch nemesis Smelly Sam. The fun is non stop and there's always treasure for all.

State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

An Unforgettable Fish Tale Battling a jack crevalle takes strategy, effort and time. By Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters We were having fun at the nearshore reef, catching bluefish, summer trout and blackfish on light tackle, when all of a sudden the small Fin Nor spinning reel started screaming as line rapidly disappeared off the spool. It didn’t take but a second to figure out the anchor had to come up — and quick — as the couple hundred yards of braid was almost gone. With the anchor up, we proceeded to chase the fish, angler in the bow, reeling frantically to get line back and to maintain a standing position as we bounced through the waves. Literally hours passed as the seesaw battle ensued, much to the chagrin of the angler’s companions, as they spent the bulk of their trip watching him battle this huge fish. Finally, after a couple hours, the angler was able to lift the fish near the surface and we could ID the culprit. It was a huge jack crevalle, and he was nowhere near giving up. The angler groaned as the line disappeared again and the large jack dug in and made another blistering run. We were now in overtime. We came up with a plan to work the fish back to the surface, at which point we would use a billfish tactic by charging him, using the boat and grabbing the leader. After two 96 Island Events August 2019

unsuccessful attempts, the third time was the charm, and we boated a 37-pound jack crevalle! Everyone was happy for that battle to be over. We snapped a few pics and released a slightly tired jack. The jack crevalle is a fairly common fish in our waters, which is usually plentiful in summer. The big bruisers, usually in the 20- to 40-pound range, are often seen in big schools cruising on the surface. They are quite spooky and fast-moving, so one must be stealthy when sight fishing. Either live bait or artificials will get the job done. The bait must be placed in front of the school, but far enough to not spook the fish. These schools often swim erratically and fast. Medium to heavy tackle is recommended for these bulldog battlers…unless you have hours to spare, of course. Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. The Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers, features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. The

ARVELOUS ANATEE

By Anneliza Itkor, Outside Hilton Head

T

here are few things as glorious as spotting a manatee while out exploring Hilton Head Island’s tidal creeks and rivers. This roly-poly mammal is so unique in appearance that seeing a paddle tail flip up out of the water, or that signature nose breaking the surface of the water as it grabs a snoot full of air, feels a bit like discovering a rare magical beast. Manatees are a relatively new addition to our tidal saltmarsh ecosystem, with “Protect Our Manatee” signs posted in marinas within the last few years. While we may be excited about being able to see these creatures without having to travel south, their presence in our environment is, in fact, a strong indicator of climate change. Each year, the temperatures of our local waters climb a little higher in the summer months, making the trip north for more abundant food resources more attractive for the warm-water-loving West Indian Manatee.

Manatees are primarily vegetarians. They spend six to eight hours a day eating sea grass and other aquatic vegetation. It is this dietary trait — as well as their slow, lumbering mannerisms — that earn them the nickname “sea cow.” Manatees have no natural predators. Even when a manatee encounters a 12-foot alligator, it will simply nudge the gator out of the way so it can continue on its journey. Sadly, the manatee’s lack of natural predators has not kept it out of danger. Boat strikes and human intrusion into manatee habitat and feeding environments has driven this species almost to extinction. Even though the state of Florida instituted manatee protection laws many years ago, their numbers sunk to the low 4,000s by 2013. Thanks to conservation efforts in Florida and along our Southern coast, manatees were moved to the threatened species list in 2017. However, there is still much work to be done to protect this exotic wonder.

West Indian Manatees are weirdly wonderful in many ways. Weighing in at 1,000 pounds or more in maturity, they do not have a continuous layer of blubber (like a whale) to keep them warm. When aquatic temperatures drop below 68 degrees, they must seek warmer water to survive. During the winter months, the manatee hangs out primarily in Florida waters. As summer heats up, manatees are now being found as far north as Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

There are simple things that can be done to help protect our local manatee population and to support conservancy. First and foremost, don’t litter and NEVER use plastic bags. Trash in our waterways damages the manatee’s habitat. There are many “adopt-a-manatee” programs that can be found online, and these dollars go specifically to support manatee conservation. Report live manatee sightings to the SCDNR at scdnr.gov. To report an injured manatee in South Carolina, contact the 24-hour SCDNR hotline at (800) 922-5431.

Manatees are not fast swimmers. While capable of speeds up to 20 mph, they generally putter along at around 3 to 5 mph. Due to these slow speeds, algae and barnacles tend to grow on their skin, resulting in a rather unpleasant, odiferous experience. On a positive note, the algae helps protect the manatees from the harmful rays of the sun. Talk about green sunscreen!

Increase your odds of spotting one of these marine miracles by getting outside into our tidal saltmarshes. Outside Hilton Head offers guided kayak and standup paddling nature excursions that can increase your chances of a manatee sighting. Our experienced guides know where to look and what to look for. 10 Tips for BETTER Golf Perfect your game this summer on Hilton Head Island. By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy August is a great month to work on your golf swing and to refine your approach toward this challenging, rewarding sport. Here are 10 things to keep in mind to help you make the most of your game:

1. Golf is a leisure sport. Be leisurely and take your time.

Relaxed muscles move faster than slow muscles. When do we play golf? When we need to relax after a busy week, or on weekends and trips to Hilton Head Island.

2. The golf swing is a fluid motion that propels the ball into the air.

Just as water flows peacefully and powerfully down the river, so too does the golf swing combine fluidity and power. When golfers trust this motion, they are amazed how far the ball goes.

3. When you swing slow, the ball goes fast. How does this

work? When all the parts of the body work correctly and in sequence, the sensation is of slow, graceful motion. The end result is incredible clubhead speed from centrifugal force and other physics principles.

4. Big muscles, not little muscles, are key. Golf is life and lifting. When you lift a heavy object, you use your legs and core. As a result, the heavy object will feel light. Lift the same object with only your arms, and it will feel heavy. The same idea applies to the golf swing.

5. The lower body leads the way. The golf swing is much like pickleball, tennis and baseball. Move your feet first in the athletic motion, and the upper body will not be strained or vulnerable to injury. 6. Let gravity help you. Gravity is powerful and invisible. Do this

test: stand tall, extend your arms relaxed to waist height and let them free fall to the sides of your legs. How much force do you feel? Now, lift your arms above your shoulders and let them free fall to the sides of your legs. Is there more force?

7. Build your game from the hole to the tee to find victory. Golf legend Jack Nicklaus made this statement famous: If you learn to putt correctly, then chipping is easy. Then, chipping correctly

makes pitching easy. Excellent pitching makes the full swing easy to learn.

8. Less is more. This principle is hard to learn, but it applies to every area of golf and life. When the golfer lets physics do the work, the golf swing is similar to breathing. Yes, you can learn to do this. It will allow you to play golf for life.

9. Golf is a game for a lifetime. Therefore, learn the fundamentals. Musician Elton John arrived at college an excellent self-taught pianist. He played several classics that impressed his professors. However, he was required to learn the fundamentals of posture, finger position and footwork. This expanded his playing abilities, which ultimately set him free to go on to the mastery of the piano. 10. Focus on the action, not the end result. Mark McGwire, the homerun hitter, shared with me that many of the 583 home runs he hit he did not, in fact, try to hit. His goal was to hit it solid. When the ball met the sweet spot, he found extraordinary distance. Enjoy every moment on the golf course this month. I hope to see you out on the green! A former PGA Tour pro and member of the local golf Hall of Fame, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?, a free clinic and demonstration, every Monday at 4 p.m. (843) 785-1138, (800) 827-3006 or www. palmettodunes.com.
