HILTON HEAD Board the Black Dagger and set sail on a pirate adventure! From beginning to end, the action is non-stop as the kids are transformed into a Pirate Crew. The adventure starts in Harbour Town, where each little mate gets to put on some pirate gear and learns to talk like a pirate. Once they’ve sworn their allegiance to the boat, they are officially part of the Crew and get to join in the hunt for loot.

such as Mermaid or Guppy! Some words you may want to brush up on in advance of your pirate cruise: AHOY – Pirate for “hello” or “I see something.” AYE, AYE – Pirate for “Yes, Sir.” ARRGHH! - Always said with extreme emphasis, this is the one word a pirate simply can’t do without.

We’ve got a map that leads to a sunken treasure chest, but Stinky Pete knows about it too and he stole the key. The race is on to find Stinky Pete and get the key back before he can steal the treasure for himself. Once we find him, our new Crew is going to have to man the water cannons and blast the stink right off of Pete until he gives us the key! Fortunately, at Pirates of Hilton Head, we always beat Stinky Pete and every little pirate always gets a handful of the loot. We celebrate the victory with some music and dancing before heading back to port. PIRATE LINGO Every little pirate needs to know how to speak like a real buccaneer. The most important thing for any aspiring pirate to know is that we shout pretty much everything! Those who can’t turn up the volume will be insulted with the lowest, most terrible of pirate nicknames, 6

The Official Guide July-August 2011

The entire experience with the crew of the Black Dagger lasts about an hour and a half. The first fifteen minutes are spent on the dock getting the little pirates ready and then we board the ship and head out on the Calibogue Sound. Trips leave daily, reservations for all passengers are required. Please arrive at least 20 minutes early to get your pirate name and a tattoo.

Established in 1985, the Coastal Discovery Museum offers hands-on exploration of the Lowcountry‘s diverse cultural heritage and complex natural history with an array of programs, presentations, exhibits and tours for all ages. Sharing space with the Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center on Highway 278, the original location features a small exhibition gallery, a popular gift shop showcasing South Carolina products, books, crafts, artwork and children's educational games/toys. The last significant parcel of open space on Hilton Head Island, the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn opened to the public in 2007. Comprising 68-acres of salt marsh and maritime forests, centuriesold live oaks, open fields and a dozen historic structures, Honey Horn is located at the intersection of Highway 278 and the Cross Island Expressway. Over its 300-year history, Honey Horn has been home to Indian tribes, indigo and Sea Island cotton plantations, Gullah families who hunted and farmed the land, a hunt club established by northern businessmen and, starting in 1950, Fred Hack’s private residence and farm. In the late 1990s, the Town of Hilton Head Island purchased the site and leased it to the Coastal Discovery Museum for 95 years. Construction of the 6,000-squarefoot hunting lodge began in 1859 and, today, is known as the Discovery House, complete with permanent and temporary 8

Atlantic Bottlenose

One of Hilton Head Island’s most popular residents, Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins are abundant in local waters. In fact, these incredible marine mammals share so many characteristics with humans it can be argued they are our underwater counterparts. One example is the way they give birth. Female dolphins give live birth and nurse their young for up to three years. Male calves often stay with the mother for up to five years and potentially for the rest of their lives, if female. In the wintertime, the Bottlenose population averages from 200 to 400 animals. Early spring through late fall, we are inundated with dolphins as females from all over the Southeastern coast make an annual trek to the area to give birth. Other females 22

The Official Guide July-August 2011

act as midwives and nannies, often taking turns watching over the young as the mother feeds. Males tag along, following the females wherever they go – yet another human trait! From a boat, you will often see the young calves swimming and playing with the other dolphins in the pod. Providing abundant food for the mothers, Lowcountry waters also give the young dolphins a fairly safe environment to practice swimming and hunting before moving on to other parts of the coast. Although they lack the gracefulness of an adult dolphin, the calves’ playfulness and energy tends to remind one of their own youth. RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides over 50 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists. At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are also ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on The Official Guide’s Island Maps. Our maps also show the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side, and a localized map of the area on the other.

RULES FOR THE ROAD Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available. Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways. Be courteous, alert and predictable. THE CRAZY CRAB The Crazy Crab boasts two picturesque waterfront locations on either end of Hilton Head Island. This longtime local favorite opened in 1984 on Highway 278 overlooking Jarvis Creek. Two years later, the second restaurant began serving hungry patrons in Harbour Town. Destroyed by fire in 1998, the North-end Crazy Crab was rebuilt to twice its original size and now accommodates nearly 250 people inside the spacious, nauticalthemed restaurant, with another 80 seats outside on the deck. Open daily for lunch and dinner, both locations offer identical menus featuring made-to-order Lowcountry specialties. Share a complimentary basket of freshly-made hushpuppies while enjoying a bowl of She Crab Soup, shrimp cocktail, jumbo lump crab cake, oysters on the half shell or Caesar salad.

minds may opt for the signature Steamed Seafood Pot or a combination platter. Several steak and chicken dishes are available, as well. Steps away from the Harbour Town Playground in Sea Pines, with an enclosed outdoor play area and huge indoor saltwater aquarium at Jarvis Creek, kids are always welcome at these casual, family-friendly establishments. The special “Minnow’s Menu“ includes grilled cheese, fried shrimp, chicken fingers and pizza with a selection of locally-made ice cream, homemade Key Lime pie and chocolate mud pie for dessert. According to co-owner Peter Kenneweg, the secret of the restaurants’ success is three-fold. “It’s more than one thing,” he explains. “It’s got to be good food, good service and the price has to be right.”

During lunch, the variety of salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood platters and daily specials are sure to please every palate. In the evening, the menu expands to include an even larger selection of appetizers and entrees, such as stuffed flounder, stuffed mushrooms and Alaskan king crab legs.

The Crazy Crab restaurants have been local favorites for more than 25 years. A children’s menu, take-out and outdoor seating (at Jarvis Creek) are available. Reservations are not required, large groups welcome.

From fresh fish and tender sea scallops to succulent shrimp and plump oysters, patrons may choose their seafood broiled, fried or steamed with a garden salad, corn-on-the-cob, coleslaw, onion rings, rice, baked potato or French fries on the side. (843) 363-2722

For dine-in, takeout or delivery, you can also create your own masterpiece with a choice of 20 toppings, including Canadian bacon, ground beef, meatballs, banana peppers, jalapenos and roasted red peppers. 46

(843) 842-8700 / Why worry about a fancy name when it’s the food that matters? That’s the philosophy at No Name Pizza & Pub, where food and fun are top priorities. Owner Kris Lynn spent more than a decade crafting the perfect pizza at his parent’s restaurant, Giuseppi’s Pizza in The Sea Pines Resort. In 2010, he moved outside the gates to a convenient mid-Island location in order to showcase his family’s delicious recipes and firstrate service to a wider audience. Hand-tossed, made-to-order pizzas prepared with fresh dough, homemade sauce, hand-sliced meats and top-of-the-line cheeses are the specialty of the house. For lunch or dinner, fresh salads with homemade dressing, calzones stuffed with meat, cheese and veggies, gut-busting pastas, super-sized sandwiches or tempting appetizers are also excellent choices. Those in a hurry can opt for fast takeout or speedy delivery available from Port Royal Plantation to the entire south end of the Island. Offering a family-friendly atmosphere with top-notch service where someone is always on-site to make sure every guest is taken care of and a menu that has something for everyone. Open daily for lunch and dinner from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Daily specials, Happy Hour deals, kid’s menu, fast takeout and speedy delivery are available. 890 Wm.
