Bribie Island Mahalo Outrigger Canoe Club has continued its impressive run of success, taking on the world’s best at the prestigious Hamilton Island Cup, held from June 18-21. The club was represented by three crews at the international event, with Senior Masters Mixed duo Maria McRoy and Darran Ryan claiming a silver medal in the 8km mixed doubles race. Athletes battled challenging tides, strong winds and demanding ocean conditions across multiple events, including the gruelling 42km deep water race, completed in 4hr 40min. With some amazing race results behind them, the club now turns its focus to upcoming races in Far North Queensland in the coming months and the Cook Islands later this year. The Bribie Island Bridge project is featured and appears to be progressing to the next stage, along with additional investment in local infrastructure.

Sheree has the details on a new $14 million playground and splash park set to open in Caboolture in 2027, a jointly funded project by all three levels of government.

Residents will also notice a minor change to their waste collection bins as part of the Bin Lid Changeover program. You’ll soon see red lids on all general waste bins across the City of Moreton Bay. Collection days will remain unchanged.

There is also an update on the proposed motorsport park at Beachmere. Sheree has some information from Ariana Doolan about the project’s current status.

I have grave concerns surrounding the plans being made for Moreton Motorsport Park near Beachmere QLD. I have frequently attended racing events at Willowbank Raceway (Ipswich, QLD) and have experienced firsthand the traffic nightmare consequences some of those events cause. Severe traffic congestion with long delays (this occurs still despite Willowbank Raceway's ongoing efforts to manage) - for both arrival and leaving.

I can foresee similar or even worse issues for accessing this Moreton Motorsports Park site -- particularly using the Bribie Island exit from the M1. As everyone knows who lives in the area congestion to/from the M1 interchange remains a serious problem dependent on timing.

I do not believe that the current M1 access options have anywhere near the capacity needed to properly handle major racing events planned.

Stopped traffic on the M1 from both directions and obstructions/delays for residents who are simply trying to travel to/

from home or for business to Bribie Island area or to Caboolture area = inevitable.

This site is a VERY BAD IDEA -- and I'm absolutely not in favour of it. Surely, options to build something like this at a much more remote location should be undertaken.

B Biegler Regulations and some I am bemused that your article on the new regulations shows a photograph of two adults riding illegally without helmets and if they are e-bikes would be illegal under the new regulations, especially if they can be ridden on throttle (i.e. without pedalling) over 6 km/h (not 25 km/h as stated in your article).

For many years now I have been a very dedicated e-bike owner (and have ridden more than 30,000km on three different bikes). I am passionate about cycling for both exercise and the freedom it gives me - and also passionate about the importance of wearing helmets, as my helmet has likely saved my life on at least two occasions.

I agree that the legal situation around e-bikes is very complex, but applaud the current change in regulations as a step in the right direction. One thing I would add to the legislation would be for all cyclists and motorcyclists to have to wear hi-vis clothing, as this makes it much easier to be seen by pedestrians and car drivers alike.

State budget at a glance

By Sheree Hoddinett Cost-of-living relief, major infrastructure projects and continued investment in community services are among the key measures set to benefit Pumicestone and the wider City of Moreton Bay under the Queensland Government's 2026-27 Budget.

Released on June 23, this budget is about creating better services through a stronger economy, building Queensland’s future and making Queensland safer.

Member for Pumicestone Ariana Doolan said the budget focused on delivering election commitments while addressing the issues that matter most to local families.

“The 2026–27 Queensland Budget is about delivering on the commitments we made to Queenslanders and continuing to build a stronger future for communities like Pumicestone," Ms Doolan said.

She said easing cost-of-living pressures remained a priority, with several initiatives designed to provide relief to households.

“I know that cost-of-living remains the number one concern for many local families, and this budget delivers practical measures that will help ease those pressures,” Ms Doolan said.

Among the headline measures are legislation to permanently lock in 50-cent public transport fares, a two-year freeze on Southeast Queensland bulk water prices, a $150 Back to School Boost payment and $200 Play On! sports vouchers.

The budget also includes continued investment in major infrastructure projects across the region, with planning progressing for the long-awaited second Bribie Island Bridge.

Ms Doolan said the project remained one of the region's most significant priorities.

“Importantly for our community, the budget also reinforces the Crisafulli Government's commitment to delivering the new Bribie Island Bridge,” she said. “This is one of the most significant infrastructure projects our region has seen in decades and will improve safety, reliability and connectivity for residents, commuters, emergency services and visitors. After years of uncertainty, it is encouraging to see this project continuing to move forward.”

The bridge project is part of a broader transport investment package that also includes upgrades to the Beerburrum Road, Twin View Road and English Street intersection at Elimbah.

Community organisations are also set to benefit through funding for projects including the Bribie Island Neighbourhood Centre redevelopment, expansion of the Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Club, additional support for Moreton Bay Meals on

Wheels and improvements to the Bribie Island Movement and Strength Club.

Environmental initiatives include the Zero Litter to the Bay by 2030 program, which will install new stormwater drain filters aimed at reducing litter and plastics entering Moreton Bay, while a new Moreton Bay Wildlife Hospital and Education Hub at Dakabin will provide treatment and rehabilitation for injured wildlife.

Ms Doolan said the budget recognised the needs of one of Australia's fastest-growing regions.

“The budget also delivers record investment in housing, health and community safety,” she said. “Queensland is one of the fastest-growing states in the nation and it's essential we continue investing in the infrastructure and services needed to support that growth.”

Community safety also receives significant funding through the budget, including continued POLAIR services for Moreton Bay, expansion of the Woodford Youth Detention Centre, additional victim support services and the GPS Tracker pilot program for high-risk domestic and family violence offenders in Caboolture.

Across Queensland, the budget outlines a record $119 billion infrastructure program over four years, alongside investments in new hospitals, roads, schools, housing and frontline services. Premier David Crisafulli said the budget aimed to provide practical support while strengthening the state's long-term finances.

“We are continuing to deliver a fresh start for the Moreton Bay area, addressing the crises we inherited in youth crime, health, housing and cost-of-living as well as delivering the local community initiatives we promised,” he said.

The government said this budget delivered lower debt, no new or increased taxes and a projected return to surplus by 2029-30, while continuing investment in transport, healthcare, housing and community infrastructure.

More than $1 billion has been added to Queensland’s social and community housing build, with a record $5.7 billion to support the 6500 homes that are currently underway and the goal of delivering 53,500 by 2044.

Ms Doolan said she would continue advocating to ensure Pumicestone received ongoing investment as the region continued to grow.

“As the Member for Pumicestone, my focus will always be ensuring our community receives its fair share of investment,” she said. “Whether it's advocating for better transport infrastructure, supporting local sporting clubs and community organisations, improving healthcare access or delivering safer communities, I will continue working every day to ensure local voices are heard.”

Many Labor pollies started out as real workers and then, after suffering exploitation, learned how they might change things, by studying the techniques of leadership, until they got elected.

Some politicians became experts in another field before turning to politics -because they felt they had the knowledge and wanted to change things.

Whatever the pathway, the best politicians are promoted to the ministry, but rarely will they stay within their own field of expertise.

Ministers often know so little about their portfolio, that they need expert advice to make speeches about their responsibilities and can’t be trusted with the day-to-day activities - that is left to the Public Service.

However, politicians with a large ego, think

the public service is so unimportant that they cut its size. They then need to pay someone in the private sector for advice, or if they turn to their cronies. Heaven help us! (Recently, we saw that private consultants weren’t always the best value for money.)

When this happens, the next government has to rebuild all the expertise and experience that has been lost from the Public Service - more expense. Running a country is a complex business, which takes years to learn.

Now we have a candidate, who would like to see the ministers take full responsibility for the actions of their departments. She expects them to have full knowledge of the science and economics involved or the results their actions will have on the people affected. This is unlikely if they have just studied arts and law.

So just be aware that, if you vote for her, there will be serious consequences.

Moreton Motorsport Park decision still circling the track

By Sheree Hoddinett The starting lights are still red for the future of Moreton Motorsport Park, with no final decision yet on what lies ahead for the Beachmere venue.

The future of the proposed $20 million Moreton Motorsport Park at 8 Bloesch Road now rests with Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Jarrod Bleijie, who will make the final determination under the Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) process.

The proposal has sparked widespread debate across the Beachmere community, with hundreds of residents attending public meetings and protests in the lead-up to the close of public submissions last month.

While opponents have raised concerns about traffic, noise, environmental impacts and the planning process, supporters say the development would provide much-needed motorsport infrastructure for Southeast Queensland while creating jobs and boosting the local economy.

All submissions received by the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning will now be assessed, a process which could take some time.

“The department has advised that the submissions, including those provided by my office, will be considered as part of the MID assessment, and where necessary further information may be sought from the applicant before a decision is made,” Member for Pumicestone

Ariana Doolan said. “I want to thank everyone who took the time to engage respectfully throughout the consultation process, regardless of their position.

This proposal has generated strong views across the community, and it is important that every voice is heard and considered through the proper planning process. I encourage everyone to continue treating one another with respect as the assessment progresses.”

Ms Doolan said her office had received a range of correspondence in relation to the matter, much of it passionate in nature.

“While I understand this proposal has generated strong emotions, there is no place for abuse, intimidation or threatening behaviour. I remain committed to representing all members of the commu-

nity respectfully, regardless of whether they support or oppose the proposal,” Ms Doolan said. “My focus has always been on ensuring the community has a genuine opportunity to be heard through a fair and transparent process.

“As the proposal has evolved, I have listened carefully to the concerns raised by local residents and have advocated for those concerns to be properly considered by the decision-maker. My priority has been representing my community and ensuring their feedback forms an important part of the assessment process.

While no date has been set for a decision on the project, an outcome is expected on the application in the coming months.

St Columban’s claim TAS Netball and Rugby honours

St Columban’s College has capped off an exceptional Trimester 2 in The Associated Schools (TAS) competition, securing both the Netball Champion School and Rugby Champion School titles after a season of impressive performances across the two sports.

The St Columban’s netball teams showcased their skill and consistency throughout the competition, recording 52 wins across the trimester. Their success was highlighted by the strong performances across multiple year levels.

The college's rugby program also enjoyed a standout season, securing 28 wins across all teams. A combination of determination, teamwork and depth across the age groups saw St Columban’s emerge as 2026 Rugby Champion School, cementing the strength of the college's rugby pathway.

These achievements reflect the commitment of St Columban’s student-athletes, coaches and wider school community, and reinforce the school’s growing reputation for sporting excellence within the TAS competition.

St Columban’s players are now looking toward the Trimester 3 season, which kicked off Saturday July 18. They’ll go up against the seven other TAS member schools in football, basketball, volleyball and athletics.

Now in its 10th year of existence, Bribie Island Mahalo Outrigger Canoe Club continues to up the ante by competing in top level outrigger canoe racing events.

Following on from our success earlier this year when Bribie Island won the coveted Men’s Champion Trophy for the 26km Norfolk Island circumnavigation, we had three crews compete in the internationally acclaimed Hamilton Island Cup.

The 2026 event attracted teams from far and wide. Nationally, clubs travelled from Perth, Darwin, Victoria, New South Wales and all over Queensland. International teams gathered from Hawaii, California, Hong Kong, Canada, New Zealand and Pacific Islands to contest the iconic Hamilton Island Cup that hasn’t been held for the past 12 years.

tance events commenced with the 16km around the island race, when 47 craft in the ladies events lined up side-by-side for what could be described as a manic splash and thrash with the almost 50 craft competing for the first corner. With 45 starters in the following men’s race, the start proved no different with bumps, crashes and more severe collisions pretty much guaranteed.

The final event on the program was the 42km deepwater changes race. Seeing 62 racing craft lined up side-by-side on the start line between Hamilton and Plum Pudding Island, combined with their 62 respective motorboat support vessels hovering just behind, really was a sight to behold.

The ocean and weather gods did not hold back throughout this endurance event, with canoes challenged by 1-2m waves, winds gusting around 20knots and beyond at times and bodies tested by the 42km of relentless racing. Our Bribie combatants battled well throughout this event, crossing the finish line in 4hr 40min.

An 80’s party themed closing ceremony proved a joyous and much needed social release for athletes and supporters alike following a strenuous six-month training program leading up to this landmark event.

Bribie Mahalo Outrigger Canoe Club will now shift racing focus to FNQ Dunk and Magnetic Island events over the winter months with a view to competing in the Cook Islands later this year.

Residents across the City of Moreton Bay will soon notice a change to one of the most familiar household items on the kerbside: the lid of their general waste bin.

Council is replacing the remaining pale green lids on general waste bins with new red lids as part of the Bin Lid Changeover program. The rollout is scheduled to take place from now through to October 2026.

The change brings Moreton Bay into line with the Australian Standard for kerbside bin colours, which designates red lids for general waste, yellow lids for recycling and lime green lids for garden organics. While many homes in the region already have red-lidded rubbish bins, others still use older pale green lids. Once the program is complete, all general waste bins across the city will have a consistent red lid.

The colour change is designed to make waste sorting easier for residents. With three different kerbside services operating across much of the city, general waste, recycling and garden organics, clear colour coding helps households quickly identify which bin is which.

Better identification can reduce contamination, improve recycling outcomes and support more efficient waste management.

Only the lid is being replaced on bins.

Residents will keep the same wheelie bin body and there is no action required from households. Council contractors will carry out the lid swap during the scheduled rollout period.

There is also an operational benefit.

According to council, the red lids help waste truck drivers identify general waste bins more easily during collections, improving servicing efficiency. The change does not affect collection days, bin sizes or the type of material that can be placed in each bin. General waste will continue to be collected weekly, while recycling and organic waste services will continue on their existing schedules.

For anyone wondering if the new red lid changes what belongs in the bin, the answer is no. The red-lidded bin remains the general waste bin, used for items that cannot be recycled or placed in the garden organics service.

By the end of the program, Moreton Bay’s kerbside bins will have a simpler, standardised colour system:

The Chameleon Effect Bribie Island: A day tripper’s paradise in waiting Why bureaucracy and missed opportunities are holding it back — how it could match the best of Noosa and Caloundra Picture this: You’re a Brisbane family or couple on a sunny weekday or weekend escape. You cross the Bribie Island bridge, catch glimpses of the sparkling Pumicestone Passage and Glass House Mountains and park near Bongaree. You stroll the historic jetty (built 1912), watch kids splash in the calm shallows, grab a coffee or ice-cream, browse the nearby shops and the Bribie Island Central/ Woolworths-Target precinct then have lunch at The Jetty or a casual spot along the esplanade. It’s pleasant, relaxed, affordable and genuinely family friendly.

The water is right there with nature a short drive or paddle away.

Then, after an hour or two, many visitors quietly ask themselves: Is this it? They head home or continue north to Caloundra or Noosa because Bribie, for all its natural charm, doesn’t yet give them enough reasons to linger, spend more or plan a return visit with friends.

Bribie has a genuinely decent waterfront shopping and activity precinct in Bongaree — convenient, scenic and walkable to the jetty, parklands and calm beach along Welsby Parade serving locals well for everyday needs. However it lacks the curated, high-quality, experiential mix of retail, dining and usual attractions that turns a pleasant stop into a memorable destination. That’s the gap — and it’s fixable.

The core problem: Stagnation through bureaucracy, infrastructure bottlenecks and lack of bold vision Bribie Island isn’t failing — it’s just not reaching its potential. Several interconnected issues hold it back, many visible to day trippers and tourists: • The single bridge is at capacity.

Weekend and holiday traffic regularly clogs access, with accidents potentially gridlocking people for hours. This has been a known issue for years; residents and businesses have called for upgrades and planning funding has been allocated at state level, but delivery feels slow.

For day trippers, the friction starts before they even arrive properly.

• Planning processes and red tape create drag. Moreton Bay City Council’s own economic strategy has openly identified “too much red tape and bureaucracy” as a barrier to business growth and tourism product development. The current planning scheme (with a new one now in preparation) rightly protects coastal character, low-rise scale, flood-prone areas, acid sulfate soils and sensitive habitats like those around Pumicestone Passage. But when processes are slow, unpredictable or overly adversarial, even quality, sensitive proposals struggle. High-profile examples, such as community opposition to large-scale towers at Sandstone Point that conflict with the scheme’s low-rise and environmental outcomes, show the

tension. Good projects that could add vibrancy get delayed or diluted.

• Limited tourism “product” and activated public realm. There’s nature in abundance (national park, 4WD beaches, kayaking on the passage), some events and basic facilities.

But the waterfront precinct remains functional rather than magnetic.

Dining and retail options are mostly convenience-oriented rather than a diverse, Instagrammable or an experience-rich mix that encourages people to stay longer and spend.

Accommodation variety is also limited for turning day trippers into overnight visitors. Council strategy documents have long noted the lack of visitor experiences and accommodation as constraints.

The result, from a tourist’s perspective: Bribie feels like a lovely but slightly under-delivered version of itself. It’s easy to reach from Brisbane, uncrowded compared with peak Noosa or Mooloolaba and has that authentic Island feel — yet many leave thinking “it could be so much more” without losing its relaxed soul.

What Noosa and Caloundra show is possible Noosa (Hastings Street and surrounds) offers a masterclass in waterfront activation. Tree-lined, walkable streets right by the water with a carefully curated mix of boutiques, cafes, restaurants, bars and galleries. It feels premium yet relaxed, with strong place-making, events and integration with the national park and everglades experiences. Visitors linger, spend and return.

It has challenges (traffic, peak crowds, higher prices), but the investment in quality public realm and destination positioning pays off. Day trippers and overnighters alike feel they have had a proper “experience”.

Caloundra takes a more relaxed, family-oriented approach with strong beachfront activation — Kings Beach rockpools, Bulcock Beach with its views across to Bribie, promenades, cafes along with a good mix of dining and shopping. It’s accessible, welcoming and has grown without completely losing its laid-back character. It draws Brisbane day trippers effectively because it delivers variety and easy water access right where people park and stroll.

Bribie doesn’t need to copy either destination. It has unique assets: true

Island separation (even if connected by bridge), an historic jetty and esplanade, the passage for water-based adventures, proximity to Brisbane (often quicker than pushing further north) and a more lowkey, affordable vibe than Noosa. It could become the “relaxed Island escape with quality waterfront heart” — easier access than Noosa, more distinctive than Caloundra.

How Bribie can level up — Practical steps The good news is that many of the building blocks already exist and recent state government moves to cut red tape for tourism operators in natural areas create tailwinds. Here’s what would make a real difference from a day tripper and tourist viewpoint: • Create and deliver a waterfront masterplan for Bongaree Jetty/ Esplanade precinct. Build on the existing charm (jetty, calm swimming, parklands, views). Invest in high-quality public realm — widened promenades, better seating and lighting, landscaping, public art (local artists and the emerging Bribie Bay Art Collective could shine here) and flexible spaces for markets or events. Encourage ground-floor activation with diverse operators: quality cafes and restaurants (seafood, modern Australian, casual international cuisine), boutique retail and experiential offerings. Design guidelines should protect low-rise, coastal character while allowing sensitive mixed-use (perhaps light accommodation or short stay above retail in places).

• Streamline approvals for quality tourism projects. Use the upcoming new planning scheme as an opportunity to modernise processes — clear timelines, genuine case management and fast-tracking for proposals that demonstrably meet environmental and design standards. Reduce the “too much red tape” friction identified in council’s own strategy without weakening protections. This attracts serious investors who want to deliver the missing mix of shops, dining and experiences.

• Curate a richer shopping, dining and experience mix. Move beyond convenience retail toward a balanced destination offering. Support local makers and artisans alongside complementary businesses.

Create reasons to linger: weekend markets, food events, art walks or a central booking point for tours and activities. Leverage the passage and national park for well-managed eco-adventures (kayak, SUP, guided nature experiences) that feel premium and responsible.

• Fix the fundamentals that frustrate visitors. Keep advocating hard for bridge capacity solutions or smart alternatives. Improve wayfinding, parking management, signage and basic facilities so the first impression is seamless. Strong digital presence and simple itineraries (“Perfect Bribie Day Trip”) would help Brisbane visitors plan and stay longer.

• Position and market deliberately.

“Bribie Island — Brisbane’s relaxed Island getaway: water, nature and emerging waterfront charm”. Target day trippers and short-break markets explicitly. Partner with Tourism and Events Queensland, Visit Brisbane and local chambers. Celebrate what makes it different from (and easier than) Noosa while learning from Caloundra’s approachable beach-town energy.

The payoff for locals and visitors alike Done well, this isn’t about over-development or losing Bribie’s relaxed character — it’s about enhancing what already draws people. More day trippers who stay longer and spend more supports existing businesses, creates local jobs in hospitality and retail and builds resilience. Quality, sensitive growth can lift property values and community pride without destroying the very peace that makes our Island special.

Environmental values and the low-rise coastal character must remain non-negotiable.

Bribie Island already has a decent waterfront precinct and extraordinary natural setting. With clearer processes, targeted public and private investment in activation, and a shared vision, it can deliver the variety and “wow” factor that turns casual visitors into raving fans and repeat customers — while staying true to its Island soul.

The ingredients are there. The day trippers are already coming. The question is whether council, state government, local businesses, creatives and the community will work together to give them (and future generations) a reason to stay longer and come back often.

Bribie deserves to be more than “pleasant”. It has everything needed to become genuinely magnetic. The time to act — especially with planning scheme renewal and state tourism reforms underway — is now!

Delivering a Fresh Start for Queensland and Pumicestone

Queenslanders voted for a fresh start, and the Crisafulli Government is getting on with the job of delivering safer communities, stronger services and a better future for families across our state with the 2026/27 Budget handed down in late June.

After years of rising youth crime, growing health pressures and worsening housing affordability, this government is focused on restoring confidence and delivering practical outcomes where they matter most.

Community safety remains a priority.

Since coming to government, more police officers have joined the frontline, stronger laws have been introduced

and early intervention and rehabilitation programs have been expanded. Early signs are encouraging, with victim numbers falling and crime reducing across Queensland compared to the same period last year.

In health, we know there is still work to do, but progress is being made. Elective surgery waiting lists are coming down, additional procedures are being delivered through the Surgery Connect program and the Hospital Rescue Plan is investing in new and expanded hospitals to ensure Queenslanders can access healthcare when and where they need it.

Housing affordability remains one of the biggest challenges facing our communi-

ties. Through the Residential Activation Fund, the government is unlocking land and delivering the critical infrastructure needed to support new housing developments. More than 100,000 homes have already been unlocked across Queensland, with thousands more social and community homes currently under construction or under contract.

The cost-of-living also continues to place pressure on household budgets.

Lower power prices under the Energy Roadmap are providing relief to families and businesses, while ongoing work to strengthen Queensland's economy is helping create jobs and support growth.

Here in Pumicestone, we continue to

benefit from investment in critical infrastructure including the new Bribie Island Bridge, upgrades to Caboolture–Bribie Island Road and important works to protect northern Bribie Island and the Pumicestone Passage. I am also proud to work with local sporting groups and community organisations to deliver much needed facility upgrades across the region.

As your local member, I remain committed to ensuring Pumicestone continues to receive the investment and attention our growing community deserves as we build an even brighter future together.

The City of Moreton Bay spokesperson said the application was not located within an environmentally sensitive area and was not immediately adjacent to the waterfront or residential dwellings.

“The proposed building will alleviate a lack of short-term accommodation options on Bribie Island and contribute positively to the Bongaree Jetty Precinct by supporting nearby local businesses.”

A development application for 14-18 Second Avenue, Bongaree has now been approved by City of Moreton Bay, subject to any conditions set out in the decision notice.

The following type of approval has been issued to the applicant Mancorp Development Holdings Pty Ltd Tte: Material Change of Use - Development Permit for Multiple Dwelling and Short Term Accommodation (45 Dwellings), Food and Drink Outlet, Office and Shop.

You may remember a story we featured in The Local News in April (When height causes conflict) which shared the concerns of local residents, with some questioning the building’s height. Zoning across the Island currently allows for building heights to be capped at 21 metres. This development will exceed this level by about four metres.

When queried about the height being approved, the council shared the following.

“On June 17, 2026, council unanimously voted to approve a development application at Bongaree for a mixed-use building consisting of a small commercial tenancy at ground floor and a multiple dwelling and short-term accommodation on levels above,” a City of Moreton Bay spokesperson said.

“The recessed roof top communal open space area, including the lift overrun, gym and associated shade structures is the only element to exceed the height limit of 21 metres, to 25.5 metres.

“With these elements recessed from the main building line, experts state this is

Faux pets headline dementiafriendly library programs

The gentle purring of a cat or calming presence of a precious pooch is helping bring comfort and connection to City of Moreton Bay locals living with dementia.

The special pets have found new homes at three City of Moreton Bay libraries (Caboolture, North Lakes and Redcliffe) and will aid people living with dementia - with one key difference. They’re not real.

Two ‘robocats’ and a ‘robodog’ will work their magic with visitors as part of their dementia-friendly programs designed to support residents living with dementia and their carers.

Lifelike in appearance and movement, the companion animals are designed to provide therapeutic support thanks to their soft fur, gentle movements and simulated heartbeats. That in turns helps to reduce feelings of anxiety and loneliness while encouraging interaction and

emotional comfort for participants.

Council’s seven other libraries will also be able to borrow the pets as part of three dementia kits that can be accessed on site, or as part of library visits to aged care and other facilities. The kits include three weighted plush comfort dogs, classic board games like checkers and snakes and ladders, simple jigsaw puzzles and reminiscence books designed to spark memories, celebrate personal history and aid cognitive recall.

Much like a weighted blanket, the weighted comfort dogs use deep pressure stimulation to naturally ease anxiety emulating a soothing hug, reducing evening agitation and improving sleep quality.

Splashing into the future

Get ready to splash around and have some fun in the sun with an exciting new project now underway. The sound of excavators and construction crews at Centenary Lakes has marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Caboolture. Work has officially started on what could become one of the region’s most loved family destinations.

One of the most significant recreational projects to be delivered in the area in recent years, the new Centenary Lakes Regional Playground and Splash Park is set to deliver endless hours of adventure, laughter and water-filled fun when it opens in 2027.

The $14 million project is expected to transform the popular lakeside precinct into a premier recreational hub for residents and visitors from across the City of Moreton Bay and beyond. Funded through a partnership between local, state and federal governments, the development reflects a significant investment in the future of one of Moreton Bay’s fastest-growing communities.

The regional playground and splash park will feature an impressive range of attractions designed to appeal to people of all ages and abilities. Plans include towering play structures, sensory trails, interactive water-play areas, accessible pathways, upgraded picnic facilities, barbecue areas, shaded gathering spaces and additional parking.

The emphasis on accessibility is also a big part of this project. Families who may have previously encountered barriers when visiting traditional recreational facilities will have access to purpose-built infrastructure designed to promote inclusion, independence and participation.

For many residents, the project represents much more than a new playground. As Caboolture continues to experience strong population growth, the demand for modern, high-quality recreational facilities has increased significantly. Community consultation undertaken by City of Moreton Bay revealed overwhelming support for inclusive play spaces and water-based attractions (it’s been a long time coming!), with residents identifying

these features as priorities for the future of Centenary Lakes.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said Centenary Lakes had been a hub for sport and recreation since the 1970s, with community needs changing over time as the area becomes home to more people.

“We asked the community how they would like to see the Centenary Lakes precinct redeveloped and a water play area topped the list. Residents also said they wanted new inclusive playgrounds that can be enjoyed by all,” Mayor Flannery said. “This is a significant community project. The new play space will be a popular location for birthday parties and family gatherings, while the changing places amenities and water play wheelchairs will be a drawcard for people seeking all-abilities facilities.”

All levels of government have come together to bring this project to life.

Once completed, the attraction is expected to become a major regional drawcard. Families from across Moreton Bay and neighbouring areas are likely to make the journey to experience the new facilities, creating opportunities for local businesses to benefit from increased visitation.

The development is also expected to deliver economic benefits throughout the construction phase, supporting local contractors, suppliers and tradespeople involved in bringing the vision to life.

The Centenary Lakes Regional Playground and Splash Park project is possible with a partnership between all three levels of government.

The Australian and Queensland Governments are providing $5,137,102 via the SEQ City Deal Liveability Fund.

The Australian Government is providing $3,000,000 via its Investing In Our Communities fund. City of Moreton Bay’s total contribution is $5,862,898.

When the gates officially open mid next year (weather permitting of course!), the Centenary Lakes Regional Playground and Splash Park is expected to become one of the standout family attractions in the City of Moreton Bay. As construction continues over the coming months, anticipation is only expected to grow.

Caboolture Gem Club GEMFEST 2026 For the past 55 years, Caboolture Gem Club has been providing a venue, equipment and training in all forms of lapidary for the local community through voluntary management and instructors, and we continue to grow.

On August 1, we are holding our annual gemfest in the Caboolture Showgrounds for the third year in a row. This year will be the biggest show we have ever produced on the back of a record year in 2025, with even more exhibitors displaying their unique items.

Visitors should expect to see all manner of gemstones, opals, jewellery, fossils and minerals, as well as a variety of tools and equipment along with unique hand-crafted jewellery. Choose your gemstone and setting and have your own personal piece of jewellery created while you wait.

There’s free entry for children 12 years and under with plenty of fun activities including ‘gem sieving’.

The annual awards provide school-aged artists with the opportunity to exhibit their work in a supportive, professional gallery environment, building confidence and sharing their creativity with the wider community.

Open to students living in or attending school within the City of Moreton Bay, the awards celebrate a diverse range of artistic practices, including both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, with entries accepted across all school year levels.

Participants can submit works across a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, photography, digital art, sculpture, ceramics and installation. Entries are grouped by school year level, with prize money and trophies awarded to winners in each category.

The prize categories include a People’s

Choice Award, giving exhibition visitors the opportunity to vote for their favourite artwork.

The competition includes both individual and collaborative categories, with prize money, trophies and school scholarships awarded across each category and year level.

Entries are free and open until October 1, 2026.

The exhibition will be held at Albany Creek Community Centre from October 17-25, 2026, where the community is invited to view the artworks and vote in the People’s Choice Award.

Winter lawn care on Bribie Island and Surrounds Keeping your grass healthy through the cooler months.

G’day, Bribie locals! As winter settles over the Pumicestone Passage and surrounding areas, your lawn might slow down, but that doesn’t mean you can ignore it. Bribie Island’s sandy, well-draining soils and mild subtropical winters (cooler nights, drier periods with occasional wet spells) bring specific challenges for common warmseason grasses like couch (including Queensland blue couch), buffalo and kikuyu.

With shorter days and lower temperatures, grass growth slows significantly, but proactive care now sets you up for a strong spring comeback.

Here’s a practical guide to fertilising, pest watching and tackling common winter grass problems.

Mowing and general maintenance • Raise the mowing height: Keep your mower blades higher (e.g.

5–7cm or more) to shade the soil, reduce stress and discourage weeds. Most lawns only need mowing 2–3 times over winter.

• Clear debris: Rake up leaves, clippings and overhanging branches to improve light and air flow. This helps prevent fungal issues in damp conditions.

• Aerate if needed: Compacted sandy soils or high-traffic areas benefit from aeration (use a garden fork) to improve drainage and root health. Do this before any top-dressing.

When to fertilise (and what type) In Queensland’s subtropical regions, warm-season grasses go semi-dormant in winter, so heavy feeding isn’t always necessary. Over-fertilising with highnitrogen products can waste money and promote weak growth or disease.

• Best timing: Apply a slow-release or balanced fertiliser (low in nitrogen, higher in potassium for root strength) at the start of winter or with seasonal changes. For the Sunshine Coast/Bribie area, light applications in early winter can help maintain colour without pushing excessive top growth.

Many locals spray liquid fertilisers in winter as granular products uptake poorly in cooler soils.

• Avoid: High-nitrogen feeds on dormant lawns — it can encourage fungal problems or be leached by rain.

• Soil health boost: Consider seaweed-based or organic products (like Seasol Lawn + Soil Booster) to improve microbial activity and nutrient uptake in sandy Bribie soils.

Test your soil pH if possible (sandy soils here can be acidic) and water lightly after application.

Common winter grass problems Winter grass (Poa annua) is the standout winter weed — a low-growing annual with soft, drooping leaves and triangular seed heads that thrives in

Acelepryn if needed and maintain healthy turf (proper watering/feeding) for natural resistance.

Fungal diseases and other concerns Damp, cool, shady conditions favour diseases: • Winter Fusarium: Small brown patches, often with rings, in wet weather.

• Dollar Spot, Red Thread: Circular Wintergrass is a standout winter weed.

• It germinates in autumn and peaks in winter, competing with your turf for space and nutrients • Control: - Prevention: Apply a preemergent herbicide (e.g. Oxafert or similar) in late summer/early autumn before germination.

- Treatment: Use a selective postemergent like Munns Professional Winter Grass Killer or Amgrow Winter Grass Killer (safe for most couch and buffalo) in autumn/ winter. Spot-spray mature patches with a non-selective option if needed, but be careful not to damage desired grass.

Hand-pull small clumps (easy due to shallow roots) and improve lawn density through proper mowing/ feeding to crowd it out.

Other issues include thinning or bare patches from foot traffic, pet urine or poor drainage in sandy soils.

Pests to watch for Pests don’t fully hibernate in our mild winters. Keep an eye out for: • Armyworm and lawn grubs: Can cause patchy damage, especially in warmer spells. Check for chewed leaves or brown spots.

• Billbugs and Argentine stem weevil: Larvae feed on crowns/ stems, leading to yellowing or dead patches in late winter/spring.

• Other: Cutworms, mites or African black beetle (more active in warmer months but can linger).

Tips: Monitor by pulling up suspicious clumps. Use targeted treatments like

patches or reddish threads in nutrient-poor or stressed lawns.

Prevention: Improve airflow/sunlight, avoid overwatering (water deeply, but infrequently in the morning) and don’t let thatch build up. Catch clippings in wet weather to reduce fungal risk.

Watering wisely Winter can still be dry on Bribie — check soil moisture a few centimetres down before watering. Deep, infrequent watering is better than light daily sprinkles. Avoid afternoon watering before cold nights.

A healthy lawn now means less work (and fewer weeds) in spring. If problems persist, consider a local soil test or chat with Sunshine Coast turf suppliers. Your grass will thank you come the warmer days — happy gardening!

Island Fishing July FISHING REPORT

Land based Fishing Report: Mid-June to Mid-July 2026 – Bribie Island & Pumicestone Passage G’day all, hope your winter fishing has been keeping the esky full. Having a look around the area and the reports coming through, here’s my general overall take on land-based fishing in the Bribie Island and Pumicestone Passage channels and flats over the past 25 days.

We’re well into the cooler months with stable water temperatures and milder conditions helping the bite. Classic winter patterns are kicking in nicely around the structure, flats and channels when the tides align.

Overall Picture by Species: Bream: The run is strong. Good numbers of solid fish are active around the bridge, mangrove edges and channels on fresh bait and small plastics.

Flathead: Very reliable on the shallow flats and channel edges. Keepers are coming from oyster jetty flats and near White Patch, especially on the run-out with soft plastics.

Whiting: Quality sand whiting continue to perform well in the flats and gutters on prawns and worms, particularly on incoming tides.

Tailor & Trevally: Tailor are building with the mullet run, while golden trevally, diamond trevally and queenfish are providing excellent action.

Other: Solid mud crabbing, good squid numbers in low light and the odd jewfish or grunter around deeper structure.

General takeaways: Land-based fishing has been steady and rewarding, with best results on tide changes in protected spots. The Bribie Bridge area, mainland flats and White Patch remain popular access points. Fresh baits are performing well, but lures are accounting for plenty of fish.

Overall, it’s a solid winter period in the Pumicestone Passage with bream and flathead leading the way and trevally adding excitement. Conditions look promising ahead.

I'm one happy chappy this month, with the weather providing the expected perfect winter days. I hope you're all filling your esky with the bounty from your days exploring our beautiful home – Moreton Bay! I’ve been lucky enough to venture out three times - all to Caloundra-wide.

First trip took us to the southern end on a northerly wind, fishing wasn’t great, as expected in a northerly, but we got enough for a good feed. Nine in the ice box, including a beautiful tuskfish caught by my mate’s son Cooper, using a slow pitch jig. Cooper doesn't always catch many fish, but he always manages to get the fish of the day. He's got the feel for lures and only fishes with them.

Day after the full moon was our third trip out, heading to the northern end – and a daytime fish. Spectacular weather, whales playing around us, who cares if we catch nothing. Plenty of undersized fish, including a 44.5cm Maori Cod. Doh! They need to be 45cm, oh well - that's fishing. Nabbed a hussar, a pigfish, and

seven very good tuskfish. Great day considering the moon phase.

Now, the second trip was an exploring day. Having been to the central area (I've never heard of anybody fishing there) we decided it was time we did. Quick look around the area showed a lot of wire weed, gravel and a few small lumps.

Plenty of fish showing and we found a patch in 68m that we had to drop a bait on. First drop, two paternoster rigs, four fish came on board – two keepers. We decided to add 5cm to the accepted legal size slowing up the intake of fish allowed to go on ice. With our new size of 43cm for pearl perch instead of 38, saw a heap of caught 42cm pearl perch find their freedom. Not complaining though - finished the day with 18 fish, bag limit of pearlies, three each of moses perch, snapper and tuskfish, plus a very nice 57cm Maori cod all before lunch. We might have got lucky, but it could be that it’s a very little fished area. Managed to have this little piece of fisherman paradise to ourselves - not another boat in immediate sight, other than boats at the north and south end at least two miles away in each direction.

Stay tuned, I'll head out there a few more

times, see what the results are. There may be 160 acres of mostly untouched ground out there.

I mentioned a patch of ground east of Hutchies last month. The mark for that ground is S 26 56 726 E 153 30 785. It's only 1.5km from Hutchies and is a great area with loads of different structure down there. Bottom slopes quickly to way beyond 100m. If you want to venture into some deeper water, you could do worse than starting here. Mark is on a 66m bombie, just work east from there.

I've put a photo up of my sounder on this mark, GPS position is in the photo, but may be small, hence I've added it in this post.

Finals hopes slip away Origin delivers another from Broncos classic, but controversy will linger

By Chase Christensen Just 12 months after celebrating a long-awaited premiership, the Brisbane Broncos find themselves in one of the most dramatic falls from grace the NRL has seen in recent memory. Heading into their Round 20 clash against Penrith (July 16), Brisbane had lost eight consecutive games and were sitting fourth last on the ladder, with its finals hopes hanging by a thread.

It is difficult to remember a reigning premier enduring a collapse of this magnitude the following season. The Broncos entered 2026 with high expectations after their premiership-winning campaign, but instead produced one disappointing performance after another. Confidence appears to be at an all-time low, and with each passing week, the pressure surrounding the club continues to build.

The statistics paint an ugly picture.

Brisbane currently has the fourth-worst attack in the competition, while also ranking fifth worst defensively. Those numbers explain why the Broncos have struggled to compete for long periods during games. The attack has lacked creativity and consistency, while the defence, once considered a strength, has regularly broken down under pressure.

Looking back, there were warning signs before the season began. Ben Te’o’s resignation as the club’s defensive coach raised eyebrows and suggested all was not well behind the scenes. While coaching changes are common in professional sport, losing a key member of the staff so close to the season was viewed by many as an early indication that the Broncos were facing internal challenges.

As the losses mounted, speculation surrounding head coach Michael Maguire also intensified. Reports suggesting Maguire’s demanding coaching style was taking a toll on the playing group became harder to ignore with every defeat.

Whether those rumours are entirely accurate or not, they have become a major talking point as frustration continues to grow among supporters and the media.

Off-field distractions have only made matters worse. Public incidents involving the club have attracted unwanted attention throughout the season, adding to the pressure on a team already struggling to find form. Instead of focusing solely on football, Brisbane has repeatedly found itself answering questions away from the field, allowing criticism to grow even louder.

Now, the Broncos face an enormous challenge if they are to keep their season alive. With only eight games remaining, they realistically need to win seven of them to have any genuine chance of playing finals football in September. That

task would be difficult for any side, but Brisbane’s run home offers little relief.

Their journey begins with a trip to Sydney to face Penrith, one of the competition’s benchmark clubs despite its own challenges this season. Beyond that, several more high-quality opponents await, leaving the Broncos with almost no margin for error. Every game from this point forward is effectively an elimination match.

The situation has also reignited debate over the club’s coaching decisions.

Sacking premiership-winning coach Kevin Walters less than 12 months after lifting the trophy was always going to divide opinion. While the Broncos believed a new voice was needed to push the team forward, many pundits continue to argue that Walters deserves much of the credit for the club’s 2025 success. Watching Brisbane struggle so dramatically has only strengthened those opinions.

To make the finals from this position would require a run even more remarkable than the one that carried Brisbane to last year’s premiership. It would take an immediate turnaround in confidence, discipline and execution, along with consistent performances against some of the league’s strongest teams.

While rugby league has produced incredible stories before, this would rank among the competition’s greatest recoveries.

Realistically, however, Broncos supporters may be better served looking beyond this season. While the mathematical possibility of finals football remains, the greater priority should be seeing positive signs that the club is moving back in the right direction ahead of 2027. Improvement in effort, attitude and consistency would provide a foundation to build upon after what has become a deeply disappointing title defence.

In rugby league, fortunes can change quickly, and no season is over until the numbers say so. But unless Brisbane can produce something extraordinary over the final two months, this campaign will be remembered not for defending a premiership, but for one of the most stunning declines the NRL has witnessed.

By Chase Christensen The 2026 State of Origin series once again reminded the sporting world why rugby league remains one of Australia's greatest spectacles.

Three fiercely contested matches, incredible individual performances and a winner-takes-all decider at Suncorp Stadium delivered everything fans could have hoped for. There is simply nothing quite like State of Origin, and this year's series only reinforced its place as one of the game’s biggest events.

Rugby league supporters love nothing more than an Origin decider in Brisbane, and that is exactly what they were treated to. Suncorp Stadium produced another unforgettable atmosphere as Queensland and New South Wales battled for the shield in front of a passionate crowd. Every tackle, every kick and every decision carried enormous significance, creating the drama that has defined rivalry for more than four decades.

Unfortunately, as memorable as football was, the officiating again became one of the biggest talking points.

Refereeing decisions had already dominated discussion after the opening two games of the series, and those conversations only grew louder after several key moments in the decider. In a contest where the smallest moments can decide the outcome, every controversial call was placed under the microscope by players, coaches and supporters alike.

There is no denying that NSW produced an outstanding performance. The Blues defended with determination, controlled possession for long periods and capitalised on their opportunities. They deserved plenty of praise for the way they handled the pressure of an Origin decider on Queensland soil.

However, many believe they also benefited from a crucial moment that changed the course of the match.

The most debated incident came when NSW winger Jack Bostock challenged the ball before the Blues scored at the end of the same passage of play. Many viewers argued the ball had clearly contacted Bostock's hand, which would have resulted in a knock-on and halted the attack before the try was eventually scored.

Match officials explained that they had evidence from a corner-post camera showing the ball had not been played illegally. Yet, for reasons that remain unclear, that angle was never shown during the television broadcast. The lack of transparency only fuelled frustration

Adding to the controversy, the NRL admitted the following day that awarding the try had been the incorrect decision.

While that admission acknowledged the mistake, it offered little comfort to Queensland. An apology cannot change the scoreboard, replay the game, or bring the Origin Shield back north of the border.

The Bostock decision was not the only contentious moment either. Queensland also believed it had been denied a crucial try after a tight offside ruling. While opinions differed on whether the decision was correct, it was another 50-50 call that had a significant effect on momentum during one of the most important periods of the game.

That is not to suggest the officiating alone decided on the series. New South Wales played outstanding football and earned the right to celebrate. Their composure, discipline and execution under pressure were worthy of champions.

But in a contest decided by such fine margins, it is impossible to ignore how those major decisions influenced both momentum and the result.

For Queensland supporters, the emotions after full-time were mixed. There was pride in the effort shown by the Maroons, disappointment that another series had slipped away, and frustration over the decisions that many believe shaped the decider. It was a difficult result to accept, particularly knowing that some of the biggest moments remain open to debate.

Even so, one belief remains as strong as ever north of the Tweed.

Queenslanders often say that State of Origin is more than just a game. It is built on pride, passion and representing your state with everything you have.

While NSW left Brisbane with the shield, many Maroons supporters would argue that the Blues still do not truly understand what Origin means to Queensland.

That opinion may spark debate, but it reflects the unique culture that has made State of Origin one of the greatest rivalries in world sport. The 2026 series delivered unforgettable moments, incredible football and plenty of controversy. Long after the final siren, fans will continue arguing about the officiating, the turning points and what might have been.

Perhaps that is exactly what makes Origin so special.
