The new laws are aimed at improving safety for everyone, with the hope of reducing injuries and creating a safer environment for both riders and pedestrians.

The proposed motorsport raceway at Beachmere continues to divide opinion.

Sheree shares some views from supporters who say the venue would boost tourism and inject economic benefits into the City of Moreton Bay, while potentially reducing local hooning by offering a safe place for motorsport enthusiasts. Critics, however, argue the development threatens the very qualities that make Beachmere special, warning it could forever alter the character of the quiet coastal community. What do you think?

Reports that City of Moreton Bay Council may shift its main headquarters from Strathpine to the former paper mill at Petrie raise serious concerns for ratepayers already struggling with rising living costs.

Council claims the Strathpine Chambers and Pine Rivers buildings will reach ‘end of life’ by 2030, yet no costings, business case, condition reports or rate payer impact analysis have been released.

Similar claims are being made about the Redcliffe and Caboolture chambers, again without evidence. Until this information is public, residents cannot judge whether a new headquarters is necessary or financially responsible.

Moreton Bay is a large, multicentred region. Centralising civic functions at Petrie would reduce access for residents in Redcliffe, Caboolture, Bribie Island, Dayboro and the northern suburbs. The existing chambers reflect the geography and history of our communities; removing these touchpoints risks weakening local representation and service access.

Centralisation would also hit older residents hardest. Many seniors rely on face to face assistance for rates, permits

and community services. Travelling 30–50 minutes to a single building is simply not practical. If council insists on consolidation, it must commit to maintaining local service points through libraries, post offices or community hubs.

A new civic building is not a one off spend. It locks ratepayers into decades of depreciation, maintenance and financing costs. Without a transparent longterm financial plan, residents cannot know whether this project is sustainable or whether it will divert funds from essential services and infrastructure.

Before progressing further, council should answer six basic questions: • Total project cost • Cost of refurbishing existing buildings • How the project will be funded • Expected operational savings • Impact on rates over the next decade • When genuine consultation will occur Every dollar spent on a new headquarters is a dollar not spent on roads, drainage, parks and ageing infrastructure. With billions already committed to the Petrie precinct, residents deserve to know whether this proposal serves the region or simply adds to household pressures.

Ratepayers expect transparency. Will councillors release the full business case, costings, options analysis and longterm financial modelling for public scrutiny before any decision is made?

Balancing affordability and the future

City of Moreton Bay handed down its 2026-27 Budget on June 12.

By Sheree Hoddinett With a focus on cost-of-living pressure while continuing to invest for the future, City of Moreton Bay unveiled a “responsible” budget focused on what matters most to the community.

The $1.2 billion 2026-27 Budget was handed down on June 12 and featured a minimum general rate rise under Brisbane CPI, 10% increase to pensioner rebates and the continuation of free tipping to help buffer cost-of-living pressures on residents.

City of Moreton Bay continues to have one of the lowest rates and debt levels in southeast Queensland, providing long term stability in the current fluctuating economic environment. Mayor Peter Flannery said that sensible fiscal management meant that City of Moreton Bay could continue to fund essential dayto-day services while also proactively planning for population growth.

“As one of Australia’s fastest growing local government areas, with an estimated population of one million in around 30 years, this responsible budget delivers value for money to residents and ensures we can keep up with our growth, supporting future infrastructure, jobs and innovation to sustain the lifestyle City of Moreton Bay is renowned for.

“Just like households across our community, council has faced rising costof-living pressures, including increases in fuel, electricity, labour and construction costs. Even with these pressures, thanks to strong financial and fiscal management, we can continue to keep costs down for locals while spending wisely on important projects for our future.”

Mayor Flannery said they were conscious that cost-of-living pressures were impacting residents, so they had worked hard to keep this year’s minimum general rate increase under Brisbane CPI at 4.69% or just $1.13 per week/ $59 a year.

“To further help our residents, we’re increasing the pensioner and selffunded retiree rebates by 10%, welcome assistance for almost 35,000 City of Moreton Bay residents. We also continue to lead the way as the only SEQ Council to offer rebates for self-funded retirees,” Mayor Flannery said. “City of Moreton Bay also has one of the lowest waste charges in southeast Queensland and we will continue our highly valued free tipping (up to three tonnes or 26 visits) for residents.”

Some key projects across City of Moreton Bay include: • Moreton Bay Central – delivering on plans for a boulevard to connect Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre to the site.

• Caboolture River Road – delivering a safer east–west corridor with a fourlane road, upgraded intersections and improved walking and cycling connections.

• Old Gympie Road – delivering a vital

upgrade to this north-south arterial road with a safer, four-lane corridor, upgraded intersections, improved drainage and better active transport connections to reduce congestion.

• Dohles Rocks Road Connector – delivering a four-lane link through the Moreton Bay Central precinct, home of our Olympic venue, Sunshine Coast University and new TAFE, to Dohles Rocks Road.

• Revitalisation of the Centenary Lakes including Centenary Lakes Regional Playground.

Division 1 Councillor Brooke Savige said the 2026-27 Budget focused on delivering projects shaped by community feedback to meet the needs of the city’s diverse and growing population.

“This budget delivers a strong pipeline of community-driven projects that respond to the needs of our residents, from improved parks and pathways to upgraded facilities for local sports clubs and organisations,” she said. “We’re investing in infrastructure that supports active lifestyles and strengthens community connection, including enhanced recreational spaces, better pedestrian access and modern amenities that make Division 1 an even better place to live, work and play.”

Key projects for Division 1 • Construction of a combined water sports precinct including storage facilities and new public amenities at Sylvan Beach Esplanade, Bellara.

• Construction of an upgraded Skate Park at Sunderland Drive, Bellara.

• Installation of new fitness equipment at Harmony Park, Bongaree.

• Playground upgrades including new play equipment and shade sails at Newell Street Park, Ningi.

• Construction of new amenities and beach shower at Campbell Place, Woorim.

• Road resurfacing and rehabilitation across Division 1 including Bellara, Bongaree, Caboolture.

• Early planning work for foreshore park upgrades at Donnybrook.

Key projects for Division 2 • Upgraded intersection at Burpengary, Station, Henderson and Rowley Roads, Burpengary.

• Construction of 1400m of missing link pathway along Hargrave Street Morayfield, as well as 730m of road rehabilitation and 668m of road resurfacing extending from Graham Road to Sturt Street.

• Renewal of sports fields at Burpengary Sports Complex, Burpengary.

• 790m of road rehabilitation at Creek Road, Burpengary East, extending from Eastern Services Road to Twists Road.

• Renewal of 456m of footpath from 60 Bishop Road to Elizabeth Street,

Beachmere.

Key projects for Division 3 • Upgrades to Caboolture River Road with four-lanes, upgraded intersections and improved walking and cycling connections.

• Construction of a new playground at Centenary Lakes, including a splash pad, adventure play, nature play, DOLA relocation, toilet block, carpark and associated pathways, softscape and hardscape.

• Active transport upgrades and road rehabilitation at Elliott Street, Caboolture.

• Road rehabilitation at River Drive, Bellmere and service relocations for a new intersection at Henzell Road, Toohey Street and Watt Street, Caboolture.

• Construction of a 2.4km pathway connecting Pumicestone Road to the

Caboolture to Wamuran rail trail on Beerburrum Road, Caboolture.

• Construction of a new rugby league clubhouse at Centenary Lakes, Caboolture.

• Acquisition to finalise the land requirements for a future 4Ha District Recreation Park between Goshawk Court and Pumicestone Road, Caboolture.

Key projects for Division 12 • Road rehabilitation and resurfacing across Division 12 including: Porter Road in Caboolture, Mountain View Road in Moorina and Petersen Road in Morayfield.

• Upgrades at Elimbah Soldiers Memorial Hall, Elimbah.

• Renewal of a park shade structure and new picnic facilities at Caboolture Regional Environmental Education Centre (CREEC), Burpengary.

• Renewal of a footpath along Beerburrum Road, Elimbah, construction of a missing link pathway at Dobson Lane, Upper Caboolture and Excelsior Drive, Morayfield.

• Responsive LED Signage road safety signage for various locations across Division 12 to increase driver awareness of the risk of wildlife collisions.

• Planning for a new district sports park at Lilywood to support the Waraba development and installation of new fixed CCTV units throughout Waraba.

Setting the wheels in motion

By Sheree Hoddinett When I was a kid, pedal power literally meant exactly that, using the pedals on a bicycle to get moving. Now, it seems that the use of pedals has become more of a distant memory and the sight of e-bikes and e-scooters has definitely increased.

Over the past few years, Queensland has seen a dramatic rise in the popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters.

They have become a practical solution for commuters looking to avoid traffic, older residents wanting to stay active, students travelling to school and workers seeking an affordable alternative to rising fuel costs.

What began as a somewhat niche mode of transport has become a common sight on roads, footpaths and shared pathways pretty much everywhere.

Unfortunately, that growth has also been accompanied by a rise in accidents, injuries and dangerous riding behaviour.

Reports of speeding riders, modified high-powered bikes and near misses involving pedestrians have become increasingly common.

Now the Queensland Government has stepped in with a decision that stronger regulation is necessary. From July 1, there will be a crackdown on the most dangerous e-scooter and e-bike behaviours on roads and paths, with the full reforms to take effect from August 31. The stronger laws will deliver: • •

Licensing requirements for riders, with exemptions for medical conditions and disabilities, and

ability for 12–17-year-olds to ride under parental supervision from August 31.

• Parental accountability for children under 16 riding illegally, from July 1.

Now, while legislation is simply catching up with reality, there is the argument over whether this will be enough.

Genuine pedal-assist bicycles that comply with Australian standards are one thing; illegally modified machines capable of dangerous speeds are something entirely different. Many would agree that there should be consequences for people riding vehicles that effectively operate as unregistered motorcycles.

While few people would oppose tougher action against illegal e-bikes, the big worry is that responsible riders could become collateral damage in a broader crackdown. A lot of e-bike owners obey speed limits, wear helmets and use their bikes appropriately.

Nobody wants dangerous riders putting lives at risk. Communities deserve safe pathways, responsible behaviour and effective enforcement against those who deliberately break the rules.

However, Queensland must be careful not to create barriers that discourage responsible riders from choosing a transport option that benefits everyone.

The success of the new legislation will not be measured by the number of fines issued or bikes confiscated. It will be measured by whether Queensland can reduce dangerous behaviour while continuing to encourage active transport for those who truly want it. If the laws strike that balance, they will be remembered as a sensible step forward.

If they become overly restrictive, they risk slowing the growth of a transport revolution that has the potential to make cities and communities cleaner, healthier and more connected.

The big challenge now is ensuring the legislation targets dangerous behaviour without punishing the thousands of Queenslanders who simply want a safe, affordable and sustainable way to get around.

OUT AND ABOUT with Ariana

It has been another busy and productive period across the electorate of Pumicestone. Throughout May I had the opportunity to attend a wide range of community events, meet with local organisations and speak with residents about the issues that matter most to them.

One of the highlights of the month was seeing our community come together for a number of local events that showcased the incredible spirit, resilience and generosity that make Pumicestone such a wonderful place to live.

I was pleased to attend the sixth annual Deadlift for Harry event, which once again brought together hundreds of people to honour Harry Payne’s legacy while raising awareness about road safety and mental health. It was inspiring to see so many volunteers, sponsors and community members supporting such an important cause and demonstrating the strength of our local community.

Sport continues to play a vital role in bringing people together and it was fan-

tastic to officially switch on the new field lights at Beachmere Rugby League Club.

This important upgrade will support players, volunteers and families for many years to come and reflects the value we place on investing in grassroots sporting facilities across our region.

I was also delighted to see local organisations benefit from funding through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

Beachmere Rugby League Club received support to continue strengthening its facilities, while Bribie Island Queensland Ambulance Service secured funding for new training equipment. These investments help ensure local organisations can continue providing valuable services and opportunities for our community.

Back in parliament, the government has continued to focus on delivering safer communities and stronger services for Queenslanders. Significant reforms to Queensland’s parole system have been announced following an independent review, with changes aimed at ensuring

community safety and victims’ interests remain at the forefront of parole decisions.

The government is also taking action to address longstanding delays in forensic DNA testing and evidence processing.

These measures will help provide police with faster access to critical evidence and support more timely outcomes for victims seeking justice.

Health has also remained a priority as we move into June. New figures show elective surgery waiting lists have fallen to their lowest level in more than two years, helping more Queenslanders access the procedures they need sooner. At the same time, BreastScreen Queensland has returned to Bribie Island, providing local women with convenient access to free breast cancer screening services. Early detection remains one of the most effective ways to improve treatment outcomes and I encourage eligible women to take advantage of this important service.

May also provided an opportunity to recognise the many volunteers who make such a valuable contribution to our community. During National Volunteer Week, we acknowledged the dedication of volunteers across a wide range of organisations, including our local SES members who regularly step forward to assist during emergencies, storms and natural disasters. Their service and commitment help keep our communities safe and connected.

Education was another important focus during the month, with the launch of the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

This initiative continues to encourage young Queenslanders to develop strong literacy skills and foster a lifelong love of reading, helping set them up for success both inside and outside the classroom.

Finally, I was pleased to attend the Enduro Quest 2026 Bribie to Caloundra Challenge. The event brought together dragon boat teams from across the region and highlighted both the determination of participants and the natural beauty of the Pumicestone Passage.

Congratulations to all paddlers, volunteers and organisers involved in making the event such a success.

That’s a wrap on Queensland Small Bribie Island at the crossroads: Business Month!

The Chameleon Effect

Growth, protection and the soul of our coastal community Bribie Island and Sandstone Point have always represented the best of southeast Queensland living — accessible yet unspoiled, a place where families fish, 4WD enthusiasts explore and retirees find peace right next door to the Pumicestone Passage. In 2026 however, this special corner of Moreton Bay stands at a tipping point. A $250 million luxury resort proposal, ongoing erosion challenges, surging tourism pressures and plans for a second bridge are converging. The question isn’t whether change is coming, but what kind of change we choose — and whether we can manage the tradeoffs without losing what makes this area unique.

Towers at the gateway: Economic lift or character killer?

The Comiskey Group’s ambitious expansion of the Sandstone Point Hotel site proposes two 10-11 storey towers with 202 five-star rooms, plus retail, entertainment and parking upgrades.

Proponents paint a compelling picture: nearly 1000 construction and ongoing jobs, a major boost to overnight tourism in a region long dominated by daytrippers and elevated status for Moreton Bay as a destination.

Yet many locals see red flags. At 10+ storeys, the development would dwarf the area’s low-rise coastal character and existing height limits in parts of the locality. Concerns include exacerbated traffic on the already congested Bribie Island Road, storm water and coastal hazard risks in a vulnerable zone and impacts on views and sensitive habitats across the passage. Groups like BIEPA have mobilised submissions, arguing it risks turning the serene gateway into something resembling busier Gold Coast strips.

In my view as Chameleon, both sides have merit. Responsible tourism growth can fund better services and create opportunities, especially for younger residents. But scale matters. Poorly managed development can erode the very lifestyle that draws people here in the first place.

Erosion and breakthroughs: Nature’s warning and our response Bribie Island’s role as a natural shield for Caloundra and Golden Beach has been tested harshly. Multiple breakthroughs in recent years exposed mainland communities to greater wave energy and erosion. Emergency works — closing breaches, placing more than 550,000 cubic metres of sand and deploying dredgers — have provided short-term relief into 2026, with further stabilisation continuing.

This isn’t just about sand. It raises deeper questions about long-term coastal resilience amid more frequent severe weather. Should we invest in engineered solutions like rock walls or ongoing nourishment, or accept some natural realignment? Taxpayers rightly ask about costs, while residents on both sides of the passage demand protection for homes, businesses and the island’s national park values. Climate adaptation demands pragmatism — neither denial nor panic, but evidence-based action that balances ecology and safety.

Tourism overload: Freedom versus

fragility on the beaches Bribie’s national park draws thousands with its 4WD-accessible beaches, camping and wildlife. On peak days, convoys create a spectacle — and problems. Overcrowding at hotspots leads to litter, dune damage, speeding and risks to nesting loggerhead turtles.

Many visitors are respectful, but the sheer volume strains the environment and resident amenity.

Calls for vehicle caps, stricter permitting or seasonal restrictions clash with traditions of open beach access that define the island for many. Banning 4WDs entirely would alienate a core user group and hurt local businesses. Yet doing nothing risks irreversible harm to a protected area. A middle path — better enforcement, targeted limits during turtle season and improved facilities — could preserve enjoyment while protecting the asset everyone values.

The second bridge: Relief or accelerator?

The existing bridge is a notorious bottleneck. Plans for a second eastbound structure with active transport links, alongside upgrades to CabooltureBribie Island Road, promise safer access, better emergency response and support for growing resident numbers.

Detailed design is advancing, with construction potentially starting around 2028.Supporters see it as essential infrastructure for a maturing community.

Critics fear it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy — inviting more development and visitors, worsening the pressures above. Infrastructure should serve existing needs first, not simply unlock unchecked growth.

These issues are deeply intertwined.

A bigger resort and new bridge could amplify tourism and traffic, just as erosion reminds us of environmental limits. The path forward requires honest conversation, not slogans. We can pursue smart, scaled growth that brings jobs without sacrificing character. We can protect the coast and park while allowing responsible recreation. And we can build necessary infrastructure without treating it as a blank cheque for unlimited expansion.

Ultimately, Bribie and Sandstone Point’s future should reflect the community’s collective vision — one that honours its relaxed coastal soul while adapting to 21st-century realities. Councils, state government and developers must prioritise genuine consultation over rushed approvals. Residents owe it to themselves to engage constructively, weighing personal preferences against the greater good.What do you value most here? New community housing coming to Morayfield

In a bid to help alleviate homelessness in the City of Moreton Bay, a collaborative effort is underway to build a community housing complex at Morayfield.

Murphy Builders has been appointed to deliver the 14-unit development, which will provide long-term housing for people in need of safe and stable accommodation. As part of an innovative approach, council granted community housing provider Coast2Bay with a lowcost lease to support community use over council land on Oakey Flat Road to develop and manage community housing at the site.

The Queensland Government is providing funding for the construction of the project, which is expected to begin later this year.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said council was proud to support the project by providing the land to help make it a reality.

“This project will deliver muchneeded homes in our city for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness,” he said. “The provision of council land for these homes is another example of a council taking a collaborative approach with community and government partners to improve outcomes for people experiencing homelessness and housing stress in Moreton Bay. “Our Housing and Homelessness Action Plan continues to drive our commitment to supporting long-term community wellbeing. Stable and secure housing for people in need is critical to this.”

The complex will feature a mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom units. It will also include a community room, providing opportunities for tenant engagement activities, group meetings, small events and local service providers to deliver programs in the complex – initiatives that will drive community and connection.

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2027. Residents of the complex will be from the Queensland Housing Register and may include seniors, families and people living with a disability.

Coast2Bay Housing CEO Andrew Elvin said the project meant more locals would have a safe place to call home and the support they needed to build a better future.

“This project is about housing people and changing lives,” he said. “Council’s

support through the land lease, together with Queensland Government funding, shows what is possible when we work together with a shared purpose. “Once complete, our team in Caboolture will be there to support tenants every step of the way. Being based locally means we understand our community and can respond quickly with care and compassion. At Coast2Bay, housing people really does change lives.”

City of Moreton Bay has also granted a low-cost lease to support community use to community housing provider Bric Housing to develop and manage community housing on council-land at Caboolture.

Additionally, council is encouraging the construction of community and affordable housing through its Attraction of Affordable Social Housing Development Policy, which waives up to 100% of the infrastructure charges and development fees for the social and affordable housing portion of a development. To date, council has waived or agreed to waive $2.281 million in infrastructure charges and development application fees for eligible projects, including a Redcliffe complex featuring 82 social and affordable homes which welcomed its first residents late last year.

Construction is also underway on social and affordable housing projects at Deception Bay and Mango Hill, while other projects are under assessment.

Rolex and mechanical watches wanted Mechanical watches are needed urgently by the buyers. “Collectors at this stage want brands such as Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Longines, and Seiko, just to mention some. These brands can command good prices depending on the model and condition.” Mike explains. "If you are unsure, bring your watches in for an appraisal."

Bribie 10-year-old young gun making waves in Australian golf

One of the biggest and youngest stories in Australian sport right now is Bribie Island golf prodigy Narsha Solomon.

At just 10-years-old, Narsha has already achieved what many golfers spend decades chasing. She recently became the youngest Australian ever to win a women's open club championship after claiming victory in the Pacific Harbour

Women's Club Championship.

What makes the achievement even more remarkable is the way she won. Competing against adult golfers, Narsha dominated the threeround, 54-hole championship, finishing nine shots clear of the runner-up. In golfing terms, a nine-shot victory is a landslide result and a testament to both her skill and composure under pressure.

The Pacific Harbour Women's Club Championship is the latest highlight in what has already been an extraordinary year for the young golfer who has been a member of both Pacific Harbour Golf Club and Bribie Island Golf Club since 2023.

Earlier this year, Narsha competed in the Sunshine Coast School Golf Trials at Beerwah Golf Club, where she was aiming to secure a place in the 10–12 years Sunshine Coast representative team. Despite being one of the youngest players in the field, she delivered the standout performance of the day recording the lowest score of the trials with an impressive round of 79.

That result earned her selection in the Sunshine Coast team that will compete at the upcoming state championships in Rockhampton and Yeppoon. The tournament will see some of Queensland's most promising young golfers battle for state honours and Narsha is expected to be among the players to watch.

Another major accomplishment came at

the Bribie Island Junior Open. Competing against more than 100 junior golfers, Narsha recorded the lowest gross score in the under-13 girls division with a score of 83. Her outstanding performance not only secured bragging rights among some of the state's best young players, but also earned her an invitation to compete in the prestigious Greg Norman Junior Masters at Palmer Coolum later this year.

Her rapid rise has also caught the attention of one of the world's leading golf equipment manufacturers.

Narsha was recently scouted by PING and selected to join the company's Elite Amateur Program, where she receives support from the globally recognised golf brand.

The selection is a significant endorsement of her talent and places her among a select group of emerging golfers identified as future stars of the game.

For a player who only recently turned 10, the list of achievements is already remarkable. Yet those closest to her say the success is no accident.

Narsha's father Michael Solomon says his daughter has developed a genuine passion for the game and is constantly looking for ways to improve.

"She absolutely loves the game and works incredibly hard on improving every part of it," he said.

That dedication is evident in both her performances and rapid rise through the junior golfing ranks. While many young

athletes rely purely on talent, Narsha has combined natural ability with a strong work ethic and a determination to keep learning.

Her achievements have also attracted attention beyond the local golfing community. As her results continue to impress, interest in her journey has grown with supporters following her progress both on and off the course.

What makes Narsha's story particularly inspiring is her ability to compete successfully against players significantly older and more experienced than herself. Winning junior tournaments is impressive enough, but claiming a women's club championship against adult competitors at the age of 10 places her in rare company.

With the state championships approaching, an invitation to the Greg Norman Junior Masters already secured and support from PING through its Elite Amateur Program, Narsha's golfing future is shaping up to be incredibly exciting. While there is still a long journey ahead, many within the sport believe she has the potential to become one of Australia's brightest golfing talents.

For now, the Bribie Island youngster is simply enjoying the game she loves while continuing to surprise everyone with what she can achieve.

If her performances so far are any indication, the name Narsha Solomon may be one that Australian golf fans hear for many years to come.

Garden advice from the depths of the earth

Winter wonders on Bribie Island and surrounds

Winter on Bribie Island and throughout the Moreton Bay region is a fantastic time for gardeners. With mild days, cooler nights and minimal frost risk in our coastal area, the garden keeps growing steadily. Lower humidity and reduced pest pressure make it one of the most enjoyable and productive seasons of the year. This is my take on what to do in our gardens now that we are well into winter.

Why winter gardening works so well here Our subtropical climate means that our gardens rarely go fully dormant. Shorter days and cooler soil temperatures suit cool season crops perfectly, while reliable winter rainfall helps keep gardens green with less watering required. It’s also the ideal time to improve soil and plan for a strong spring.

Top winter planting guide for Bribie and surrounds Vegetables • Leafy greens: lettuce, spinach, kale, silverbeet, rocket, bok choy.

• Brassicas: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower.

• Roots: carrots, beetroot, radish, turnips.

• Others: broad beans, snow peas, sugar snap peas, leeks, spring onions, garlic.

Herbs Parsley, coriander (sow now), dill, mint, oregano, thyme, sage, chives and lemon balm all thrive in the cooler weather.

An assortment of winter herbs

Planting tips • Use seedlings for faster results rather than seeds.

• Succession sow every 2–3 weeks for a continuous harvest.

• Improve sandy soils with plenty of compost and organic matter.

• Mulch well to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

• Water deeply but less often — winter is our drier season.

• Feed leafy crops with liquid fertiliser every couple of weeks.

The most common winter question: “Why is everything growing so slowly?”

This is the number one query from local gardeners during winter. Cooler soil temperatures slow down root growth and germination, so patience is key.

Helpful solutions: • Plant seedlings instead of seeds.

• Position plants in the sunniest spots possible.

• Use cloches or black plastic to warm the soil on colder nights.

• Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot in cool conditions.

Coriander is another common issue — it grows beautifully leafy in winter but bolts quickly in warmer weather, so now is the perfect time to sow it.

Moreton Bay City Council’s Grow It Local program is also excellent for connecting with other gardeners, sharing produce and getting regionspecific advice. Local nurseries and garden centres on the Island and at Sandstone Point are well stocked with winter seedlings and products.Winter gardening on Bribie is rewarding, lowstress and perfect for both beginners and experienced gardeners. Get your beds prepared now and you’ll enjoy fresh home-grown produce right through the cooler months and into a bountiful spring.

Solid winter action

Mid-winter has settled comfortably over Bribie Island and the Pumicestone Passage, delivering cooler mornings, variable winds and consistent fishing for both land-based anglers and small boat fishos. While some gusty days have kept boats closer to home, the protected waters, surf beaches, jetties and canals have produced reliable catches of tailor, flathead, bream, whiting and more.

Overall conditions Winds have been a mixed bag, with westerlies and south-easterlies at times making open water uncomfortable but leaving the passage and canals well sheltered. Water temperatures have dropped, pushing fish into shallower areas and around structure. Run-out tides continue to be the most productive on the flats, while early mornings and late afternoons remain the prime bite windows. Mud crabbing has also been rewarding in the creeks and passage.

Prime locations this month From the reports I have reviewed and read, the areas mentioned below have offered up some great fishing this month and should continue through into next month as well.

Bongaree Jetty and foreshores The iconic Bongaree Jetty remains a standout for families and beginners, where bream, flathead, juvenile snapper, moses perch, parrotfish and the occasional school jewfish or estuary cod have been regularly caught. Tailor numbers are building nicely, particularly during low-light periods. The grassy banks and sandy gutters along the Pumicestone Passage are producing good whiting and bream on yabbies or worms.

Surf beaches (Woorim, Banksia Beach, White Patch) Winter gutters are fishing well for tailor, dart, whiting and the odd jewfish. The run-out tide has been best when using pillies, metal lures or worms. Early sessions before the wind strengthens have delivered the most consistent results, with flathead also common in the shallows.

Pumicestone Passage flats and creeks This is classic winter territory. Flathead are firing on the sand and mud flats, especially around Ningi Creek, Bells Creek, and the Toorbul/Sandstone Point areas. Whiting (including some solid fish in the creeks) and bream are reliable targets. Grunter are showing at creek mouths, while school jewfish and tailor are active around deeper holes such as Lighthouse Reach. Crabbing remains excellent throughout the passage.

A catch of bream and whiting

– target beaches, the jetty and the passage with metal slugs or pilchards at dawn and dusk.

Flathead: Abundant on flats and around structure. Soft plastics, vibes or fresh bait (prawns/yabbies) are working best.

Bream & Whiting: Consistent performers on worms, yabbies or prawns, especially in cleaner water on the run-out tide.

Jewfish/Mulloway & Snapper: School fish and juveniles are common; bigger specimens possible in deeper holes near the bridge.

Mud Crabs: Very active – don’t forget to check pots.

Bait & lures: Fresh local yabbies, prawns, worms and pillies are top performers. Gulp! soft plastics and small hard-body lures are excellent for flathead and jacks.

Tides & Timing: Focus on tides with good flow. Solunar peaks in the early morning have been particularly strong.

Avoid peak wind days if planning to boat.

Regulations reminder Always check the latest Queensland Fisheries size and bag limits for tailor, snapper, jewfish, mud crabs and other species. Take only what you need and consider practising catch-and-release, especially with larger fish. Bribie Island and the surrounding areas continue to offer some of southeast Queensland’s most accessible and enjoyable winter fishing. Whether you’re casting from the jetty with the family, walking the flats or exploring the canals, there’s plenty of action on offer. Tight lines for the rest of June — get out there and make the most of the cooler weather! Local tip: Pop into the nearby bait and tackle shops for the latest hot spots and real-time conditions.

Fishing with Paul Sadly, I’ve only had the opportunity to head out on the water once in the last month. Nonstop 15 knot+ winds are a good preventative for those of us who crave the water and the thrill of the catch.

The one day we did manage to venture out was extremely challenging, which we knew would be. Talk about uncomfortable, 3m swell and 10 knots of wind against it – WOW – hang onto your hats. Definitely not easy conditions to fish in, but grateful to be out. Surprisingly, the fishing was actually quite good, however the sharks were thick.

Only fished one patch of reef located 70m east of Hutchies. Snagged a couple of pearl perch, hussar and pigfish. Nine fish in three hours – nothing to baulk at considering the conditions. Decided to count our blessings and called it, heading home. Great area of reef, with a big bombie that rises to 66m and a good rubble for around a 1km radius. On the east there is a big wire weed patch about 4km long, dropping down from 72m to 85m. Next time I'm out, I’ll grab a mark to share.

Emergency sirens ring as Broncos need a miracle to reach finals

By Chase Christensen The alarm bells are ringing loudly at Red Hill as the Brisbane Broncos find themselves in a desperate battle to save their season. After winning the premiership in 2025 and entering this year with hopes of going back-toback, the Broncos now face the very real possibility of missing the finals altogether.

Brisbane's season has taken a dramatic turn for the worse following six consecutive losses. What was once a campaign filled with promise has quickly become one of frustration and disappointment. The Broncos have not only struggled against quality opposition but have also suffered defeats to the two teams sitting at the bottom of the ladder, the Gold Coast Titans and St George Illawarra Dragons.

The low point of their season came in Round 15 when they were completely outplayed by the South Sydney Rabbitohs, suffering a humiliating 48-6 defeat. That performance put a full stop on any excuses and highlighted just how far the Broncos have fallen from the side that lifted the prestigious trophy less than a year ago.

One of the major concerns for Brisbane has been the form and fitness of some of their veteran players. Adam Reynolds and Ben Hunt have both enjoyed outstanding careers and played key roles in helping end the club's premiership drought in 2025. However, signs of age are beginning to show.

Injuries and fitness concerns have limited their impact at times, making it difficult for the Broncos to consistently compete with the younger and more energetic teams in the competition.

While the contributions of Reynolds and Hunt should never be forgotten, Brisbane must begin looking towards the future. Young halfback Thomas Duffy appears ready to take over as the club's long-term playmaker and should be given the opportunity to become the fulltime halfback from next season onwards.

At the same time, Ezra Mam faces an important period in his career. The talented five-eighth has shown glimpses of his ability but must find greater consistency if he wants to remain a guaranteed starter every week. If his performances do not improve, Brisbane already has another option waiting in the wings, with highly regarded recruit Jonah Pezet set to arrive in 2027.

The Broncos' finals hopes are hanging by a thread. Based on previous seasons, Brisbane will likely need to win eight of their remaining 10 matches to secure a place in the top eight. That task would be challenging for any team, but it becomes even more difficult when considering their upcoming draw.

All seven of Brisbane's next opponents currently sit inside the top eight on the ladder. Every week presents another major test, leaving little room for error.

A single poor performance could be enough to end their finals hopes entirely.

Even if the Broncos manage to produce a remarkable turnaround and qualify for September football, winning another premiership appears highly unlikely.

History is not on their side. No team that has finished outside the top four has gone on to win the grand final, meaning Brisbane would need to achieve something never seen before in the NRL era.

Adding further pressure is the growing discussion surrounding coach Michael Maguire. Reports and rumours suggesting that Maguire's intense training methods may be contributing to the team's struggles have gained traction following the disappointing first half of the season. Whether those claims are accurate remains unclear, but the scrutiny will only increase if results fail to improve.

Despite the difficult circumstances, the Broncos cannot afford to look too far ahead. Their focus must remain on taking each game one week at a time.

A few victories strung together could quickly change the mood around the club and rebuild confidence within the playing group.

After all, Brisbane proved last season that momentum can be a powerful thing. Their chances may be slim, but if they can rediscover their best football soon, they may still have enough time to spark something special and keep their season alive.

Dolphins glide into top four on ladder and are Queensland's best hope

By Chase Christensen While the Brisbane Broncos continue to struggle through one of the toughest periods in recent club history, their Queensland rivals are enjoying a season to remember. The Dolphins have emerged as one of the competition's biggest success stories in 2026 and are quickly becoming Queensland's best hope of premiership glory.

After securing six consecutive victories, the Dolphins find themselves sitting comfortably inside the top four on the NRL ladder. It is a remarkable turnaround for a club that is only in its fourth season since entering the competition.

More importantly, it places them in the strongest position they have ever been in to qualify for the finals and make a genuine premiership push.

The contrast between the Dolphins and the Broncos could not be greater.

While Brisbane has suffered six straight defeats and watched its finals hopes fade, the Dolphins have continued to build momentum with each passing week. Confidence is high throughout the squad and the club appears to be improving at exactly the right time in the season.

A major reason for their success has been the outstanding form of their halves pairing. Isaiya Katoa is enjoying what many would consider a career-best season, establishing himself as one of the competition's premier young playmakers. His game management, kicking ability and leadership have all reached new levels this year.

Alongside him, Kodi Nikorima has rediscovered some of the brilliant form that made him one of the NRL's most exciting players earlier in his career.

The experienced five-eighth has been the perfect partner for Katoa, providing creativity, speed and unpredictability in attack. Together, they have formed one of the most dangerous halves combinations in the competition and have played a major role in the Dolphins' rise up the ladder.

One of the strongest indicators that the Dolphins are legitimate premiership contenders came in their narrow defeat to the Penrith Panthers. Although they fell short by a single point, the performance showed they are capable of matching it with the very best teams in the competition. Penrith's incredible success over recent years has set the standard for the rest of the NRL and the Dolphins proved they belong in the same conversation as the competition's elite clubs.

The remainder of the regular season also presents a favorable opportunity for the Dolphins to strengthen their position inside the top four. Several of their upcoming opponents have struggled for consistency throughout the year, including the Gold Coast Titans, Brisbane Broncos, St George Illawarra Dragons and North Queensland Cowboys.

While no match in the NRL can be taken lightly, those fixtures provide the Dolphins with a genuine chance to continue their winning form and potentially secure a top four finish by the end of the regular season.

That achievement would be incredibly significant. Since the beginning of the NRL era, no team has gone on to win the grand final after finishing outside the top four. The finals system heavily

rewards teams that earn a top four position, giving them a valuable second chance and a much easier path to the premiership decider.

For the Dolphins, remaining inside the top four could be the difference between simply making the finals and genuinely competing for a premiership. It would provide a massive boost to their hopes of lifting the first title in club history and completing one of the most remarkable success stories the competition has seen.

What makes their rise even more impressive is how quickly it has happened. Many expansion clubs spend years building towards sustained success, but the Dolphins have developed into premiership contenders in a remarkably short period of time. Their squad contains a strong mix of experienced leaders, exciting young talent and players who have embraced the opportunity to establish themselves at the highest level.

There is still plenty of football left to be played with tougher challenges undoubtedly lying ahead. However, the Dolphins have shown throughout the season that they possess the talent, confidence and resilience required to compete with the best teams in the NRL. If they can maintain their current form and secure a top four finish, there is every reason to believe they can go all the way. For a club that only entered the competition a few years ago, the dream of holding the Provan-Summons Trophy on grand final day is no longer just a possibility - it is becoming a genuine reality.

The breeze was estimated at 2 - 5 Kts from the W-NW. This necessitated a course change, heading for the red buoy (Westward) rather than the yellow, starboard side rounding.

One highest score per sailor was discounted. Today's winner: Kevin on 22 points. His handicap goes up to 60 seconds. Second: Wayne on 23 points. Third: Ken with 24 points.

Report for May 14 Seven BRCY sailors on the course this afternoon. A full card of 12 races was completed. The weather was cold at 22 degrees C, and quite breezy from the

SW. Intermittent rain. Two highest scores per sailor were dropped.
