Welcome to Issue 127 Bribie Island Road has now been completed and I know that a lot of travellers are ecstatic to finally see the end of time delaying roadworks. As much as this upgrade to Bribie Island Road seemed to take forever, the work has actually been completed ahead of time.

Sheree has looked into a new proposed development in Bongaree, which will feature multiple dwelling and short-term accommodation (45 dwellings), food and drink outlet, office space and retail shop fronts. We spoke to a local resident who has major concerns regarding the relaxation of current zoning heights and who would benefit from this type of development.

Sheree also wrote about the new BCF at Sandstone Point and when that will be opening. The developer has not yet announced any tenants for the other building.

We also have some interesting opinion articles in this issue over concerns for the aged pension, why it was introduced and what it does now, plus Chameleon talks about how a large portion of the NDIS is ending up in the wrong hands.

It is time the community realise who our real enemies are and it is not Russia, communism, but those who control our banking system, referred to as DEBIT BANKING! There is a viable alternative, it is only the readers - we the citizens, who can deliver ourselves from the economic catastrophe we are being forced into!

J Nolan Bribie Island A simple solution Considering the trends in cost of fuel at the moment, I decided to do some research and I think your readers will be interested in some facts.

The government adds an ‘excise tax’ onto the cost of petrol and diesel, to raise money for the upkeep of our roads. The current rate is 52.6 cents/litre.

However, in an attempt to help our industries, the government has a Diesel Fuel Rebate Scheme which allows

accredited industries such as farming, transport and mining to receive a refund of 51 cents/litre which is claimed with their tax return.

And this is where the problem begins!

The biggest beneficiaries are giant mining companies. In 2023/2024 the 15 largest companies received $2.9 BILLION in rebates.

Some examples: BHP receives $200million/year, Glencore receives $150 million/year, Anglo American receives $100million/year. Many of the companies are multinational so some of this money leaves Australia.

There is a simple solution!

Suppose we cap the rebate at $50million/ year. Thus, we are only affecting the 15 large mining and oil and gas companies.

Our smaller companies such as agriculture, transport, tourism and small businesses keep their full rebate.

In 2024, this proposal would have put $2.2billion into a Decarbonisation Fund.

This fund could be used to support investment in clean technology across all sectors.

The loss of revenue to the biggest polluters may well encourage them to switch from diesel to cleaner electricity.

I believe this simple change would provide a fairer, faster and smarter system.

Back on the road again Ariana Doolan and Senator Corinne Mulholland with the TMR team.

The project was delivered with $28.9 million from the Australian Government and $19.3 million from the Queensland Government.

Senator for Queensland Corinne Mulholland is more than happy to see the road operating as per normal again.

“As a Moreton Bay resident, I know well the historical issues along this stretch of road and, let me tell you, so does the suspension on my car!” Senator Mulholland said. “This is a critical investment in the local lifestyle and also safety. It means better flood resilience when the weather turns, safer trips for families and a more reliable connection to essential services like Caboolture Hospital.”

Senator Mulholland also highlighted the importance of the road for both everyday users and visitors to the area.

“Caboolture-Bribie Island Road isn’t just a stretch of bitumen, it’s the front door to Bribie Island,” she said. “So improving this connection is like rolling out the

red carpet for 4WD enthusiasts and weekend adventurers, as well as making everyday life easier for locals to come home.

“I hope more people around SEQ start setting their GPS for Bribie Island on the weekends, to discover this

incredible destination, as we continue improving the safety and quality of this critical stretch of local road.”

Further west, design is progressing on the Caboolture–Bribie Island Road, Hickey Road to King Johns Creek project. Supported by commitments from both levels of government, this project will include signalising the Hickey Road intersection and preparing for the future duplication of Caboolture– Bribie Island Road from west of Hickey Road to west of King Johns Creek.

These projects build on other major joint Australian and state government investments in the region, including the completed Bruce Highway Upgrade – Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to Steve Irwin Way (Exit 163).

The duplication of Caboolture-Bribie Island Road between Old Toorbul Point Road and Saint Road is complete and in even better news, it was all finished a month ahead of schedule.

The section has been upgraded from a two to four-lane road with a centre median to separate vehicles travelling in opposite directions, reducing the potential for crashes. These upgrades will significantly improve safety and traffic flow and increase capacity along one of the region’s key connections.

The project also included upgrades to the intersection at Saint Road and McGrath Road and new U-turn facilities at Old Toorbul Point Road and Volz Road. Additionally, new traffic lights have been installed at the Volz Road and Browns Road intersection and wider shoulders and newly marked bike lanes will improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

State Member for Pumicestone Ariana Doolan said the upgrade was already making a difference for local families and businesses.

“This is a vital local route, and these works mean safer school runs, smoother commutes and more reliable travel to and from Bribie Island,” she said.

“Delivering this much needed project ahead of schedule shows the Crisafulli Government is committed to giving Queensland a fresh start by building the infrastructure our growing community needs now and into the future.

“I thank the local Bribie community for their cooperation while works were completed.”

A record rubbish haul

By Sheree Hoddinett More than seven tonnes of waste was collected as part of this year’s Clean Up Australia Day effort across City of Moreton Bay. Vapes and car parts were just some of the environmentally destructive waste items uncovered in what was one of the city’s best efforts for Clean Up Australia Day in recent times, with a record 160 sites registered and more than 2500 volunteers.

On the Island, a large group of volunteers, including State Member for Pumicestone Ariana Doolan, tackled the area behind Bribie Island Shopping Centre.

“It was fantastic to join Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA) members and local volunteers for Clean Up Australia Day, just another great example of what can be achieved when the community comes together,” Ms Doolan said. “We’re incredibly fortunate to have passionate locals who take pride in keeping our environment clean and help to enhance sustainability in the region.

“I was also pleased to be there alongside my colleague Minister for the Environment and Member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell, who joined us for the morning to meet with some of the volunteers and assist with cleanup efforts at Hornsby Road behind the shopping centre.”

However, it is concerning such a large volume of waste has been carelessly disposed of in our natural environment.”

OUT AND ABOUT with Ariana

As we move into April, it has been wonderful to see the continued energy and community spirit right across the electorate of Pumicestone. Our local calendar has been full of events, sport and opportunities for people to come together, which is always a reminder of what makes our community such a special place to live. Furthermore, as we celebrate Easter, we are reminded of the hope, renewal and promise that comes through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

I hope families across Pumicestone have a safe and joyful Easter long-weekend.

Over the past month I have been out and about across the electorate meeting with local businesses, connecting with community groups and listening to residents about the issues that matter most to them.

Back in parliament, the government has been focused on delivering reforms that improve safety and opportunity for Queenslanders. Tough new laws to combat antisemitism have been introduced, alongside stronger youth bail monitoring laws designed to better protect our communities.

Locally, I was pleased to join volunteers from the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA) for Clean Up Australia Day. Our community is fortunate to have passionate locals who take pride in protecting our beaches, parks and waterways. I was also joined

by my colleague, Minister for the Environment Andrew Powell. It was fantastic to see so many people rolling up their sleeves to keep our region clean.

Transport is another area where we are seeing positive developments. Bribie Island residents will soon benefit from a new On Demand Transport (ODT) service delivered by Caboolture Bus Lines as part of a three-year trial. The service will connect locals to work, healthcare, shopping and social activities and will operate alongside the government’s permanent 50-cent public transport fares.

We are also working to address community concerns about illegal

e-bikes and e-scooters. A parliamentary inquiry recently handed down its report with recommendations including age restrictions, stronger enforcement powers and tougher penalties for tampering with devices. The government will now carefully consider these recommendations to ensure safety for pedestrians and riders alike.

There has also been positive progress in health, with ambulance ramping across Queensland falling to its lowest level in five years as work continues under the government’s Hospital Rescue Plan.

Finally, I was proud to announce $170,000 in funding for the iconic Abbey Medieval Festival, which delivers

a major boost for our local tourism industry and brings history to life for thousands of visitors each year.

Hop to it, Easter is here again!

Chocolate, hot cross buns, church services and time spent with friends and family, it’s Easter time again!

While Easter has traditional roots, for many of us it’s become a light-hearted celebration centred on family, fun and a chance to slow down. Falling neatly into the autumn season, it’s the perfect excuse to enjoy “hopefully” cooler weather, fire up a barbecue or head off on a short getaway before the true heat of summer fades into the distance.

At the heart of the festivities is, of course, chocolate. Supermarket shelves fill months in advance with eggs of every size, flavour and variety and of course the iconic Easter Bunny makes an appearance in homes across the country. For kids, Easter morning often means a backyard egg hunt, with hidden treats tucked into gardens, living/lounge rooms and sometimes even the odd shoe. Although given the cost of Easter chocolate this year, you almost need a loan just to buy some!!

But Easter isn’t just for children. Adults have their own traditions too, whether it’s indulging in a few favourite sweets, enjoying a long lunch with friends or simply taking advantage of the public holidays to unwind. For many, it’s one of the rare times in the year when calendars clear and there’s time to just stop and “smell the roses”.

Food plays a big part in the celebrations, with hot cross buns very popular.

Toasted and slathered in butter or even with jam and cream (my favourite!), they have become a seasonal staple, appearing earlier each year and sparking the familiar “too soon?” debate.

Easter can also be a time to reflect, whether that be on a personal level or you mark the occasion in the traditional manner by attending your nearest church service, it’s an opportunity to do what matters most to you.

Easter can also simply be a chance to have time out. It’s a moment to recharge, spend time with loved ones and enjoy life’s small pleasures, whether that’s a walk in the sunshine, a movie marathon or an extra sleep-in.

In today’s fast-moving world, that sense of balance is part of what makes Easter so appealing. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or over-planned. Sometimes, it’s as simple as sharing a laugh over coffee or a few drinks, sneaking an extra chocolate egg or enjoying a few uninterrupted days away from the boring old routine.

However it’s celebrated, Easter continues to bring people together in its own way, a chance to relax, reconnect and maybe indulge just a little...okay a lot!!

NDIS Fraud: $5 Billion stolen from the disabled – and the “Crackdown” is still just window dressing

Last month in Melbourne, Kim Michael Schubert was sentenced to three years’ jail (with nine months to serve) for abusing his job at a disability employment service for stealing nearly $200,000 from 90 vulnerable NDIS participants. The court ordered him to repay $40,000. Another co-offender got off with a good behaviour bond. Good news, right? Justice finally served.

Except NDIS integrity chief John Dardo told Senate Estimates in February that up to 10% of the entire scheme is “inappropriate, made in mischief or outright criminal” — costing taxpayers up to $5 billion a year. This financial year the NDIS is forecast to cost $50.7 billion (revised down from $52 billion).

So while one small-time crook gets locked up, billions are still vanishing into thin air.

That’s not a crackdown. That’s a national disgrace.

The Albanese Government loves to trumpet its Fraud Fusion Taskforce, launched in 2022 with hundreds of millions in extra funding. And yes, they’ve notched up some wins. As of this month they’ve recorded their 24th successful NDIS fraud conviction since the Taskforce began — double the previous rate. Currently there are 660 investigations running, they have referred 59 people to court, disrupted more than 2500 dodgy providers, and blocked $86 million in suspicious claims before they were paid out. Search warrants are up tenfold. Just last week they executed more raids in Sydney over an alleged $3.5 million fraud, and a Darwin public servant was charged over $5 million in suspicious claims he allegedly funnelled through his own side business.

Minister Jenny McAllister’s office puts out glowing press releases every time someone gets a few months behind bars: “We will find you and throw the book at you”.

Spare us.

With more than 7000 fraud tip-offs flooding in every quarter (by the Taskforce’s own earlier admissions), 24 convictions and a handful of jail terms represent a pathetic return. Up to 99% of allegations appear to go nowhere. Proving criminal intent in court is “tough”, Dardo admits — which is exactly why prevention should have

been the priority years ago. Instead, the scheme ran for a decade with “no basic prevention controls”, as multiple audits have found. Criminal gangs, insiders and even some participants themselves are treating the NDIS like an ATM. New scams are emerging daily.

Participants are now openly auctioning their taxpayer-funded plans for cash kickbacks — one recently demanded $50,000 from a provider just to sign up.

Providers are billing for fake services, laundering cash and targeting nonEnglish speakers and people in prison who can’t fight back. Every dollar stolen is one less for a genuine Queenslander waiting for therapy, equipment or daily living supports in Brisbane, the Gold Coast or regional towns.

Taxpayers have already shelled out more than half a billion dollars on this Taskforce and related integrity measures. Yet the $5 billion black hole persists. The scheme has blown out from an original $14 billion projection to $50 billion-plus because governments — federal and state — let it run wild while closing other disability services and leaving the NDIS as the only game in town. Now, they’re scrambling with plan cuts, tighter eligibility and media releases about a few jailed fraudsters.

Meanwhile, honest participants and ethical providers are the ones paying the price: more red tape, squeezed budgets and eroded public trust. The vulnerable people the scheme was meant to help are being preyed upon by the very system designed to protect them.

The government says operations are “getting stronger every day” and more prosecutions are coming. Fine - but until the leakage stops at the source — until eligibility is properly policed, self-managed plans are audited in real time and criminal gangs are dismantled instead of just raided once a year — this is all theatre.

Australian taxpayers and people with genuine disabilities deserve better than a $50 billion scheme that leaks $5 billion a year while the authorities pat themselves on the back for catching the occasional small fish.

It’s not a crackdown. It’s barely a speed bump. And the metre is still running — at our expense.

Is the pension still fit for purpose?

By Sheree Hoddinett For more than a century, the pension has been a quiet cornerstone of Australian society, a promise that after what feels like a lifetime of work, older members of the community would not be left behind in old age. But as the cost of living rises and economic realities shift, the question becomes unavoidable: is the pension still fulfilling its original purpose or has it fallen behind the very people it was designed to protect?

Australia’s Age Pension was introduced in 1909, with a maximum payment of around £26 a year or roughly 10 shillings a week. At the time, this equated to about 20–25% of the average male wage.

It wasn’t generous, but it was enough to keep older Australians out of extreme poverty. Life expectancy sat at around 55 years for men and 59 for women, meaning relatively few people relied on the pension long-term. Still, the principle was groundbreaking, dignity in old age mattered.

Fast forward to today and the numbers tell a very different story. As of 2026, a single person on the full pension receives approximately $1116 per fortnight or about $29,000 a year.

Couples receive around $1682 per fortnight combined. On paper, the pension is benchmarked to around 27.7% of Male Total Average Weekly Earnings (MTAWE), slightly higher than its early 20th-century equivalent. But averages can be misleading.

The reality is that the cost of living particularly for essentials - has surged well beyond headline inflation. Rents in many parts of Australia have increased by more than 20% in just a few years. In cities like Brisbane, median weekly rents now often exceed $550 or roughly $1100 per fortnight, almost an entire single pension payment. That leaves little room for food, utilities, transport or healthcare.

Even for homeowners, rising costs are biting. Electricity prices have climbed significantly; groceries have seen sustained increases and out-of-pocket medical expenses continue to rise.

The core issue lies in what the pension was meant to do versus what it does now. Originally, it was a safety net to keep people out of poverty. In practice today, it often leaves recipients hovering just above that line or, depending on their circumstances, slipping below it.

Renters, in particular, are among the

hardest hit. While homeowners may manage on the pension with careful budgeting, those paying market rent can find themselves in a constant state of financial stress.

So what should the pension be now?

If the original benchmark was roughly a quarter of average earnings, then arguably today’s pension should do more than just meet that ratio, it should reflect modern spending patterns.

Essentials now take up a far larger share of household budgets. Housing alone can consume 30 to 50% of income for renters. A realistic pension, adjusted for actual living costs, would likely need to sit closer to $1400–$1500 per fortnight for singles to provide genuine financial stability.

There’s also a broader structural issue.

About 60% of pensioners receive the full rate, meaning they have limited or no additional income streams. While superannuation has become more widespread, many older Australians, particularly women, retired with significantly lower balances due to interrupted work patterns and lower lifetime earnings. The pension remains their primary lifeline.

This raises a fundamental question, what do we, as a society, owe those who have contributed over decades?

The pension is not a handout; it is part of a social contract. Workers pay taxes, support economic growth and build communities. In return, the system is meant to provide security when they can no longer earn.

Right now, the numbers suggest that contract is under strain. While the pension continues to rise incrementally, it is not keeping pace with the real costs faced by retirees, especially those renting or managing health issues. The gap between income and expenses is no longer theoretical; it is lived daily by hundreds of thousands of Australians.

Ultimately, this debate isn’t just about figures, it’s about values reflected through them. If the goal is to ensure older Australians can live with dignity, independence and peace of mind, then the pension must be recalibrated to reflect modern realities. Because a system designed to prevent poverty should not be leaving people this close to it in any way shape or form!

Queensland New Pastor left behind in joins Sandstone Canberra’s Community latest GST Church shake-up

Queenslanders have once again been short-changed by Canberra, with the latest GST distribution revealing the state is still falling behind while others race ahead.

Despite inheriting significant financial challenges from the former Labor Government after a decade of fiscal vandalism, a record $2.3 billion was cut from Queensland’s GST revenue in 2025-26 by the Albanese Government.

The national GST pie grew by around $4.5 billion at the same time.

Queensland has received a headline GST lift in 2026-27, but a recovery from the record-low share of GST in 2025-26 should not be confused as a GST gain. Despite the national pool increasing by almost 20% over the past three years, Queensland will be the only state or territory allocated less GST in 2026–27 than 2023-24.

Queensland’s GST recovery in 202627 ($423 per capita) is still less than the year-on-year GST gains of Western Australia ($431 per capita), Tasmania ($478 per capita) and the Northern Territory ($1436 per capita).

While national GST payments are expected to increase to 80% in the decade to 2026-27, Queensland’s GST has grown by only 37%, well behind New South Wales’ 63% increase and Victoria’s 112% increase.

Queensland is open for business under the Crisafulli Government, and securing new investment for a stronger economy and more jobs is a priority to reverse Labor’s decade of decline, but Queenslanders don’t need another slap in the face with the GST carve up.

Treasurer David Janetzki said the federal government had short changed Queensland yet again.

“Queensland should be getting its fair share of the GST pie, not playing second-fiddle to a second-rate distribution model designed to dud us,” Mr Janetzki said. “As a fellow Queenslander, I call on Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers to do the right thing

by Queensland. “Despite having the highest net interstate migration, most decentralised population, increasing demands for essential services and being a growing driver in the national economy, our share is growing less than elsewhere.”

Mr Janetzki said states should not be penalised for their continued contribution to industries that drive national wealth, but it was happening under the existing GST distribution methodology.

“The federal 2026 Productivity Commission inquiry is an opportunity to restore fairness to Australia’s system of horizontal fiscal equalisation and we’re calling on the Albanese Government to restore our fair share of GST,” he said.

Beachmere Probus Club welcomes new committee Members of the Beachmere Probus Club Inc. recently gathered at the Beachmere Community Hall for their Annual General Meeting, where a new committee was elected for the coming year.

By Sheree Hoddinett For many who call Bribie Island home, it’s their perfect little piece of paradise.

You have the rolling ocean on one side, the mostly peaceful passage on the other and with almost everything you need close by, it’s definitely become a popular place to live.

Spread across the Island in varying shapes and sizes are apartment buildings and holiday dwellings, many filled with happy visitors throughout the year. Now, it seems one more is looking to be added to the list.

On March 3, City of Moreton Bay Division 1 Councillor Brooke Savige shared a post on Facebook in regards to a public notification period for a new Development Application for 14-18 Second Avenue, Bongaree.

The impact assessable application seeks approval for a Material Change of Use - Development Permit for Multiple Dwelling and Short-Term Accommodation (45 dwellings), Food and Drink Outlet, Office and Shop. The proposed development involves: • 45 x 2-bedroom mixed-use apartments • Activated ground floor commercial development (food and drink, office, shop) • Rooftop open communal space • 57 car parks The post was met with more than 300 comments in response, some supportive, some not so much and some also questioning the proposed development height. Zoning across the Island currently allows for building

heights to be capped at 21 metres. This development will exceed this level by more than four metres.

Councillor Savige addressed many queries and concerns on the post, reiterating many times that multiple facets of the application would be assessed by council and that the community had time to make a submission ahead of the closing date in March.

One disgruntled Island local isn’t impressed with the idea of this development, particularly when there is already a multitude of vacant shops on Bribie and a housing crisis across the board.

“I can’t imagine those experiencing homelessness or anyone who falls under the low socio-economic demographic will benefit from this kind of complex,” they said. “I’m questioning who this short-term accommodation will be available to, surely long-term accommodation is more beneficial with our current housing crisis.”

The resident also highlighted the building height and queried whether it was worth ruining the beautiful iconic landscape with the beginning of highrise buildings.

“Nowhere on the Island has zoning for any building over 21 metres high, including that particular area in Bongaree,” they said. “This structure is 25.4 metres high – 4.4 metres higher than current zoning. If we allow this lapse in council building height approval where will it stop?! The next development application might be for 27 metres. Will they turn a blind eye to this

with a gradual increase using the excuse that we allowed 25.4 metres, so what’s another couple. Where do we draw the line?”

“It is over the recommended height but it is more a suggested height in the planning scheme rather than a definitive height which effectively means the application will be assessed based on any impact the extra 4.5 metres would have (because the planning scheme suggests or recommends 21m),” Cr Savige said in response to a comment about the height on the Facebook post.

She also added “even if this height were approved, it is considerably lower than the Gold Coast heights which can sit over 100m in their main areas”.

Having lived on the Island for 12 years and visited as a holiday destination prior to making the move, the disgruntled resident has seen more than their fair share of big change in a small space of time.

“With further residential development west of Caboolture, Bribie is the closest beach to visit, it’s also the closest and safest beach from Brisbane,” they said.

“Weekends here are already chaotic.

We live here because we are NOT surrounded by skyscrapers, urban sprawl, excessive traffic congestion, high crime......the list goes on. You can’t stop development, but let’s consider what development we want and what potentially being lenient leads to. Do we really want to look like the Gold or Sunshine Coast?”

The push for a second bridge, a need for further infrastructure and requests for more restaurant choices were all brought up in comments in Councillor Savige’s post. There were also multiple comments made about the Island not wanting to look like the Gold Coast.

“There certainly are diverse views on our community on a range of topics and it can be hard to find balance at times,” Cr Savige said in response to one comment.

In regard to the impact on local infrastructure and what it would mean for locals, Cr Savige pointed out that visitors are a big factor in this issue.

“The biggest pressure on our infrastructure doesn’t actually come from our local residents but rather visitors to our area, including those coming here for work such as trades, service providers etc.,” Cr Savige said in the post comments. “This will continue to be a challenge as the growth areas in the west of our region come online and those residents are looking for places to visit on weekends.

While BCF is locked in as one of the main tenants in the mixed-use retail and lifestyle development, it is yet to be revealed what else will occupy the newly built spaces nearby, which include specialty retail and Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) tenancies. Further announcements are expected in the coming months.

The project includes generous onsite parking and improved public spaces designed to complement the relaxed coastal lifestyle of the area. The development has been designed to service: • The expanding permanent residential population • Weekend visitors and holidaymakers • The region’s boating and fishing community • Passing traffic along the Bribie Island access corridor As one of Australia’s most recognisable outdoor and leisure retailers, the new BCF store is expected to provide both locals and visitors with convenient access to boating, fishing and camping gear, as well as other outdoor lifestyle products.

Re-Grow Capital Group, the company behind the development, own and manage more than 50 properties throughout Australia, as well as providing development and private equity funding.

Re-Grow Capital Group project manager Mike Gascoigne said the addition of BCF reflected the strong alignment between the precinct and the area’s outdoor lifestyle culture.

“The project responds directly to strong population growth and increasing demand for convenience retail and lifestyle services in the Bribie Island and Sandstone Point catchment,” Mr Gascoigne said. “Securing BCF as our first confirmed tenant reinforces the strategic positioning of the development and highlights retailer confidence in the region’s long-term growth.”

While BCF is a well-known national company, the overall development project has supported local trades during the construction phase and is also expected to create ongoing retail and hospitality jobs once all spaces are officially open. Due to its prominent location, just down the road from the Bribie Island bridge, the new precinct will also offer a convenient stop for visitors travelling to and from the Island, helping support the broader local economy and additional services to support tourism and recreational activity.

Project completion is scheduled for June 2026, with BCF expected to open its doors soon after.

While sandy, fast-draining soils can be nutrient-poor and occasional salt winds pose challenges, smart soil preparation and the right varieties make home fruit growing highly rewarding.

Dwarf and grafted options suit smaller Island blocks and courtyards perfectly.

Here are the top fruit trees that thrive locally. I have drawn the information from regional nurseries (like Daleys Fruit), Moreton Bay gardening resources and local grower experiences. These focus on reliability, productivity and ease in our humid, coastal conditions.

1. Citrus (Mandarins, Lemons, Limes, Cumquats & more) Citrus reigns supreme in Bribie gardens.

Reliable varieties include Imperial or Emperor Mandarins (sweet, easyto-peel), Meyer or Eureka Lemons, Tahitian Limes and Nagami Cumquats - delivering juicy, fresh fruit with minimal fuss.

Why here? They handle humidity and coastal winds well once established.

Most quality trees from reputable nurseries are grafted onto hardy rootstocks, boosting resilience against issues like phytophthora root rot (common in wet seasons), improving nutrient uptake in sandy soils and promoting stronger, earlier fruiting compared to seedling trees.

Island Fishing April FISHING REPORT

March 2026 Fishing Report: Bribie Island, Pumicestone Passage and surrounds March delivered classic early-autumn fishing around Bribie Island, Sandstone Point, Beachmere and the full length of the Pumicestone Passage. Persistent southeasterly winds (often 15–20 knots) and occasional showers created patchy, discoloured water from runoff, especially in the upper passage and creeks feeding into Beachmere and Ningi. Water temperatures stayed warm at 25–26°C, keeping fish active, but the key to success was hunting the cleaner edges on the run-out tide.

Pumicestone Passage The passage fished reasonably well for patient anglers who avoided the dirtiest runoff zones. Flathead were the standout, with good numbers around the mouth near Bongaree drop-offs, the edges of the main channel and along the western Bribie shoreline. Live baits (prawns or poddy mullet) or soft plastics worked best, especially on the last of the outgoing tide. Bream were consistent throughout the passage and in the local canals, taking fresh bait, small lures or lightly weighted plastics. Grunter showed in small but pleasing numbers in deeper gutters, while a few mangrove jacks turned up in the upper reaches and canal systems. Whiting were a little quieter than usual close to Bribie due to the dirty water, but still available on the sand flats when the tide cleaned up.

Sandstone Point and Beachmere area Sandstone Point produced excellent flathead fishing again this month — one of the most reliable spots in the region.

Anglers working the rock bars, snags and low-tide drop-offs with live baits scored some solid fish. The area around Toorbul Point and the nearby points also gave up flathead, whiting and the odd estuary cod. Beachmere and the creeks feeding into it (including Ningi Creek) were affected by freshwater runoff, but the lower reaches and mouth still yielded mangrove jacks and flathead on the cleaner push of saltwater, particularly around structure on the low tide. Mud crabs were active in the creeks and lower passage with fresh chicken or mullet baits.

Bribie Island channels and foreshores The channels and gutters along Bribie’s western side (from White Patch down toward Bongaree) offered good, sheltered fishing when the wind was up. Flathead and bream were the main targets along the drop-offs and weed edges. Shore-based anglers did well from accessible spots like the Bongaree foreshore, Sunset Park (near Dux Creek) and the old oyster jetty flats. Bream were plentiful around structure, while flathead ambushed baits or lures worked slowly along the sandy bottoms. A few school jewfish and tailor popped up at night around the jetties and deeper holes. On the ocean side, Woorim and Red Beach produced bream and the occasional flathead or dart for beach fishos using pilchards or worms.

Other highlights Prawns started running in the middle and lower reaches of the passage and creeks — a

welcome sign for bait collectors and those chasing predators. Mud crabbing held up well in the protected creeks and canal systems. Occasional juvenile snapper and Moses perch appeared in the deeper channel sections and around the bridges.

Tips for April- Target the cleaner water edges and drop-offs on the run-out tide — this was the consistent pattern through March.- Live prawns, poddy mullet or fresh bait were hard to beat for flathead and bream; soft plastics (especially in natural colours) shone for lure fishos.- Protected spots in the passage and around Sandstone Point gave the best shelter from the SE winds.Check recent rainfall — dirty water pushed fish into predictable ambush zones near structure and channel edges.- With autumn cooling underway, expect the flathead and bream bite to strengthen and whiting to improve as water clears.

March reminded us that the waters around Bribie, Sandstone Point and the Pumicestone Passage reward locals who know the tides and adapt to the conditions. As we move into April, the fishing should only get better with more settled weather and cooling water.

Phins find their flow early

The Dolphins look set for their most exciting season since entering the NRL, with the opening three rounds already showing exactly why. With key players returning and their trademark attacking style beginning to click, the Phins have wasted no time reminding fans that they are one of the most unpredictable and entertaining sides in the competition.

Their season began on a Sunday afternoon at Suncorp Stadium against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, in what quickly developed into a high quality, free flowing contest. The return of Herbie Farnworth, after missing nearly all of last season, was a major boost and immediately strengthened the Dolphins’ backline, giving them an extra layer of creativity and strike.

True to the nature of Queensland teams, the Dolphins delivered a rollercoaster performance. They showed flashes of brilliance in attack and looked dangerous whenever they shifted the ball, but lapses in defence proved costly. In the end, they fell 40-30 in an entertaining opener. While it was not the result they were after, the performance hinted at the attacking potential that would soon come to life.

Round two brought a Queensland derby against the Gold Coast Titans, a fixture that typically produces points and drama. However, the opening stages were anything but entertaining. The first half was riddled with errors from both sides, and Suncorp Stadium was unusually quiet as neither team could build momentum.

When the Titans pushed out to a 14-0 lead early in the second half, the Dolphins appeared to be heading toward a second straight loss. But, just as they had shown glimpses the week before, they found another gear when it mattered most.

Leaning into their natural, upbeat style of play, the Dolphins began to take risks and shift the ball with confidence. The change in approach paid immediate dividends. Three quick tries turned the game completely on its head, stunning the Titans and reigniting the crowd.

The highlight came in the 72nd minute, when Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow produced a moment of brilliance, finishing off a kick to score a crucial try that gave the Dolphins the lead. From there, it became a test of composure and resilience.

Strong defence in the final five minutes

ensured they held on for a hard fought and important first win of the season.

That victory carried extra significance given the challenge that awaited them in round three. A trip to Sydney to face the Cronulla Sharks loomed as a genuine test, especially with the Sharks coming off a physical encounter against Penrith the week prior.

It was the Dolphins’ first away game of the season, and they approached it with intent. A strong first half saw them take a 16-10 lead into the break, putting themselves in a perfect position to push for an upset.

What followed was one of the most complete performances the club has produced in some time. The Dolphins dominated the second half, controlling possession, executing their sets and capitalising on their opportunities. They ran away with the match 38-10, keeping Cronulla scoreless after halftime in a statement performance.

Their discipline was a standout, finishing with an impressive 85% completion rate, which laid the foundation for their attacking success. It was a performance that combined flair with control, showing a level of maturity that will excite both fans and coaching staff.

The win capped off back-to-back victories following their opening round loss and firmly put the Dolphins’ season on track. More importantly, it demonstrated that this side is capable of adapting, learning and delivering under pressure.

If they can maintain this balance between structure and their naturally exciting style of play, the Dolphins will not just be entertaining, they will be genuinely dangerous in 2026.

Madge’s Broncos quiet the haters

It has been a highly eventful first month of the NRL season, as always. The most watched team has been the Brisbane Broncos, who continue to take their fanbase on a rollercoaster ride, much like previous years. This article was close to being critical after Brisbane went winless through two rounds, but a monstrous effort in the grand final rematch has already flipped the script.

The reigning premiers opened their 2026 regular season in what was predicted to be a blockbuster clash against the Penrith Panthers, their first meeting since the 2025 preliminary final. Although Brisbane won that finals encounter, the tables turned dramatically this time. Michael McGuire’s men were held to zero points in a 26-0 defeat, and in the past 12 months, the Broncos crowd had rarely been so quiet for so long.

Whenever Brisbane managed to enter Penrith’s territory, they looked flat, with errors halting any momentum. A handful of unforced mistakes proved costly against a side as clinical as the Panthers.

The Broncos had just 42% of possession and were outgained by nearly 800 run metres, making it nearly impossible to compete.

Despite the heavy loss, many Broncos fans were not overly concerned. It was only round one of a long 27 game season, with the match marking their first in Australia since the grand final.

Round two appeared to offer a chance to respond, with another home game against the Parramatta Eels, who had been thrashed by Melbourne the week prior. Brisbane started strongly, with Reece Walsh and Kotoni Staggs crossing early to establish a double-digit lead.

However, seasoned Red Hill supporters knew better than to feel comfortable.

That caution proved justified as Parramatta stormed back with four unanswered tries, taking a 26-18 lead early in the second half. The remainder of the match was an arm wrestle, but Brisbane ultimately fell short, slipping to 0-2 to start the season.

Pressure quickly mounted, particularly on head coach Michael McGuire, who faced criticism over his intense training methods. The scrutiny had followed him since his arrival and back-to-back losses only amplified the noise. In rugby league, the only way to silence criticism is to win, but the challenge ahead was immense.

A grand final rematch against the Melbourne Storm loomed. Despite Brisbane’s winless start and Melbourne’s unbeaten record, the clash still carried enormous weight. The Storm were seeking revenge for their 2025 grand final loss, while the Broncos were desperate to kickstart their campaign.

Melbourne entered as clear favourites and looked every bit the part early, racing to a 14-0 halftime lead. Brisbane’s chances of breaking their long losing streak in Melbourne seemed slim and another difficult week of criticism appeared inevitable.

At halftime, venues like the Bribie Island RSL sports bar fell quiet despite a strong turnout, with fans struggling to see a way back. What followed, however, was the second half that demanded attention.

Jordan Riki crossed for a double, while Kotoni Staggs added another, swinging the momentum and giving Brisbane an 18-14 lead. In scenes reminiscent of last year’s grand final, the Broncos were forced to defend relentlessly while protecting a narrow advantage. This time, they held firm.

Against the odds, Brisbane secured their first win of the 2026 season in dramatic fashion.

The doubters, and much of the media, were silenced by a performance defined by resilience and belief. A victory like this can ignite a season. If the Broncos can replicate anything close to that second half performance in Melbourne, a premiership defence is well within reach.
