Mark Bailey, Minister for Transport and Main Roads (Community, Issue 27) has smeared the Federal Government’s funding pledge of $20 million for upgrading Bribie Island Road.

Instead of accepting this funding injection so that planning works to fix this road could be fast-tracked, Minister Bailey instead suggested the Federal Government focus its attention elsewhere, not on part of the State road network within the Pumicestone Electorate.

It is hard to fathom how any State Minister could thumb their nose on a $20 million gift to directly support the upgrading of Bribie Island Road that is so desperately needed. $20 million would go a long way to fixing the highly dangerous Bribie Island/Old Toorbul Point Roads intersection, as it would on the Spinnaker Drive intersection.

For Mark Bailey to have a snide crack at the Federal Coalition despite this $20 million gifted to fix a State managed road, is simply a sad indictment on his preparedness to put the safety of local motorist first.

I would also like to draw to reader’s attention some mistruths in Minister Bailey’s comments in The Island and Surrounds.

Minister Bailey states that $3 million has been allocated to planning of the upgrade of a dual carriageway between Hickey and Saints Road. This is completely false as his very own Government has slashed funding by $1 million in this year’s state budget, with his own Department’s QTRIP clearly showing only $2 million is now allocated.

I would suggest the Minister for Transport and Main Roads get his facts right so as not to mislead the good people of my electorate and start putting them first for a change.

It is important for locals to understand that any hype on this matter is being based on a 10 year old report that looked at possible sites across Australia, naming Bribie Island, amongst other locations.

Again I make it absolutely clear this will never happen here.

I urge residents not to buy into this scaremongering that I see the Labor Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan, is peddling as the sponsor for a petition.

It is not ok in my books to insight fear into people, particularly elderly residents and frankly I would expect more from the Member for Morayfield who is also the Police Minister. This is nothing but scaremongering and it should not be tolerated.

I would be more than happy to discuss this specific matter with constituents personally to clarify and allay any concerns that may be held.

Simone Wilson MP Member for Pumicestone Dear editor, Regardless of what they think about the result of the recent by-election, most people I know were disgusted at the amount of signs at the booths - dozens for LNP, dozens for ALP, dozens for One Nation. Add the hordes of people in red, blue or orange shirts and hats and you get a discouraging gauntlet to run, just to exercise your right to vote.

It’s time the government - Federal, State, or Local - put limits on the number of people allowed to stand around shoving bits of paper in your face and harassing voters.

Crimes of Violence Dear Sir/Madam, Time and time again are we seeing crimes involving violence where those charged are allowed to be bailed and walk among us committing further violence.

I suggest that Magistrates take a hard line and refuse bail t any violent offenders there by lessening the risk that these offenders will continue with their violent offending.

I would also like to see mandatory sentences for crimes involving violence thereby sending a clear signal that severe anti-social activity will not be tolerated.

Magistrates should be instructed to refuse bail to any severe crimes of violence including general assaults that are unprovoked.

Senator Fraser Anning Immigration Comments I can understand where the Senator was coming from in regard to tightening immigration especially with regard to those with have Islamic backgrounds given what we are seeing in overseas countries like France, Germany, England and parts of Scandinavia.

Whilst they be regarded as minorities within Islam the facts are that without careful screening the same may happen here in Australia.

Therefore their is a need to screen those who wish to come and live here.

That is not being racist or alarmist but a matter of precaution, and it is time the bleeding heart brigade and those who cannot see the need for such screening need to wake up and see what has been happening around the world.

We are already seeing problems with African youths/Groups in South Brisbane suburbs.

If those who wish to share a countries generosity cannot live here without committing crimes ten they should be deported back to there home countries.

This is not racial bias but a matter of common-sense and practicality and no different to deporting any others committing the same offences.

Politics and Advertising Dear Sir, I have been informed that several Political Parties are trying to increase the use of advertising and Billboards beyond the 30 day period of when advertising is currently set.

This would create an unfair advantage for Individuals who have limited capital to promote themselves.

It is further understood that the Political elements within certain Local Councils (Moreton Bay Included) would clearly obtain an unfair advantage.

There is no reason to change the current restrictions and I am certain the Public do not want to be bombarded by excessive advertising and politicking?

During this time, he also worked as a THE POETRY OF LIFE professional musician, and professional DJ. At 17 years of age, he was on stage supporting the legendary Daddy Cool with Ross Wilson, and then went on to do tours and shows with bands like Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, Skyhooks, Dragon, and Tommy Emmanuel. Eric Shields running for Mayor in Moreton Bay, Meet the Man Eric lives with his partner in the quiet coastal community of Meldale.

He was schooled at Sydney’s Newington College, and was introduced to large companies at the age of 17 when he joined P & O Shipping as a trainee Manager, and over the years he also worked for some of Australia’s largest companies.

The Founders of The Ink Shop - Karen and Eddie Young One of the rewards of composing the Close Encounters series of profile stories for the Island and Surround Newspaper over the past 12 months has been meeting so many unique individuals from all walks of life. Let’s face it - not everyone wants to sit with a Freelance Journo and relative stranger to bare their souls and personal history with a recorder stuck under their nose for 2 hours. The passion, humbleness and honesty displayed by those involved in the Close Encounters Stories has allowed the newspaper to share communityfocused stories and taught and helped strengthen my faith in the human spirit.

In this month’s Close Encounters Story, we meet the creators and owners of The Ink Shop on Bribie Island, Eddie and Karen Young who in November, 2018 celebrate The Ink Shop’s 21st Birthday.

I have to say that I wasn’t immediately inspired when It was suggested that I meet Eddie and Karen from The Ink Shop. The name conjured up a visual of a large old warehouse with ink-stained floors and walls located in the back blocks of Bribie Island stocked with oversize ink bottles being prepared for dispatch to printing companies. This could not have been further from the truth - The Iconic Ink Shop is a customer focussed one-stop-shop providing anything from a ream of copy paper to the supply of sophisticated games computers and everything in between.

The Ink Shop inspiration was born out from a combination of Eddie Young’s extensive IT background and entrepreneurial spirit and Karen and Eddies life-long partnership and desire to raise four children on Bribie Island based on a strong set of values and belief that if you serve the community with compassion and effort you will be rewarded.

Daniel Young (New Tech) and Ian Doig (Manager) While Karen and Eddie were born across different states of Australia, they each share similar family country values. Karen was raised on a dairy farm in South Gippsland, Victoria and spent a significant amount of her professional life working in Japan and Melbourne within the Foreign Market Section of a large food manufacturing company. Eddie was raised in Gatton, Queensland and spent his pre-Bribie professional life running IT Businesses, business consulting and operating Government Youth Crisis Projects. Eddie opened his first IT Business, Computer Solutions in Ipswich when he was only 18. As Eddie says, “I was a bit of a young upstart and was always up for a challenge. Prior to Bribie Island, I was heavily involved with the Chamber of Commerce and other business groups across my hometown of Ipswich, having held several key leadership roles. I recall many years ago one evening as I was arriving at a Chamber Business Meeting and a colleague tuned to me and said, ‘Eddie I have a Government Grant to develop a Pilot Program in Youth Crisis Intervention – it would be your job to go out into the community and identify the gaps and overlaps in service provision that would take a young person from

a homelessness situation to full-time employment.’ Then his colleague said, “Don’t worry Eddie – you probably would not be able to manage it anyway.” That comment was like a red rag to the bull to Eddie. After that night, Eddie went home and decided to trade in his suite for runners and sweatpants and jumped into this new youth pilot project. Back then, Eddie’s day would start at 10pm and finish at 4am and then he would work with Government agencies during the day to secure support to expand the funding needs for youth services. Eddie said, “It was a rewarding and tough period in my life that often involve dragging youth from the streets and securing the necessary medical and social services, however these roles and projects have a life and I had to eventually move on and search for a new challenge.”

Like so many Bribie Residents, Eddie and Karen were looking to relocate somewhere on the coast and were visiting Bribie Island on their way north to check out a place to live and raise their family – somewhere in the mountains. Well the rest is history and almost 21 years on, they are fully Bribitized. Their 4 children have now grown up and while two of the oldest children live interstate, the

youngest son, Daniel works as an integral part of the business fulfilling a role in the ‘New Technology Market.’ Karen has also taken the ‘post-child raising’ opportunity to pursue her passion for people and now works as a Community Support Worker on Bribie whilst also overseeing some of the key administrative functions at The Ink Shop. Both Karen and Eddie agree that it was worth trading big city living to raise their family on Bribie Island.

The Ink Shop was conceived in 1997 after Eddie Young identified a niche in the printing cartridge market. Eddie has this saying, “You buy a horse once, but you feed the bloody thing every day.” This was the basis for the beginning of The Ink Shop. The business was based on the principle that for every printer purchased you will need to continuously replace ink cartridges for the life of the printer – remember that this was 20 years ago.

Eddie said, “As a Business consultant, I used to send out copious business documents to my clients and was overwhelmed to see how much ink was consumed by my printer.” Fortunately, Eddie had some time on his hands back then, so he decided to undertake an ink cartridge research project. Eddie went about purchasing every available Ink Cartridge on the global market. He spent a lot of time dismantling and reengineering every cartridge to identify the types of ink and how the ink entered and exited each printer cartridge.

You can only image how many cartridges and printers Eddie had lined up in his ‘test lab’ to test ink types, printers and cartridges. No doubt Eddie and Karen’s neighbours back then were provided with many of Karen’s home cooked dishes to prevent the neighbourhood printer noise complaints.

Eddie said, “I always believe if you are going to do something, you do it properly.

Our ink had to be identical to any inks in the market and the ink needed to print to the best standards on the market – we achieved this,” he said. “I also wrote a very large step by step manual that detailed the engineering of each cartridge and refilling process. I became one of the leaders in this technology and was invited as keynote speaker on several occasions to discuss this technology and industry.”

This began an incredible period where The Ink Shop was borne, and with this came the supply of a major ink refilling service and printer supply business.

Over 20 years, Eddie and Karen have carefully steered their family and The Ink Shop business along a path based on customer demand and feedback.

Eddie and Karen have implemented much of their experience from working across the IT industry, corporate markets, government sectors and later as business consultants.

Karen said, “We place a very high value on customer service and will always go the extra distance to support everyone from our larger corporate clients who require ongoing complex computer network support to our local families” she said. “There are many vulnerable people in our community who need support and look for someone they can trust. You can add so much to an elderly person’s quality of life if you can go into their home and help integrate their internet, phone, printers, music, iPad or smart TV. Not everyone has a son, friend or daughter to assist with today’s tech world.

It was a pleasure to meet Eddie and Karen Young. Their compassion for the human kind is palpable and their ability to communicate with each other and share their vision across the community has allowed them to hit the big 21 years in business – Congrats and thank you.

Q&A

How do you maintain personal and business relationships?

From a business perspective, I think consumers expect service and quality and if you can genuinely provide consistent quality and service and maintain a high level of trust then you are on the way to sustaining a great long-term relationship. Personally, I feel that a relationship should be based on a future together rather than the present.

Sometimes we focus a lot on the present and short-term that we fail to see the long-term benefits of love and friendship.

What drives you to keep pushing ahead in business?

We love expanding people’s awareness and helping people achieve cost-effective solutions.

We are a passionate family who strive to develop each other and assist our community to grow stronger for years to come.

What does it mean to you to celebrate your 21st Birthday at The Ink Shop We think that for any stand-alone retail business to still be here 21 years later is a reasonable achievement – especially in today’s economy. We have seen a lot of businesses come and go from Bribie Island and we owe a lot of gratitude to our local community – we have worked hard to create a partnership with the local community in the hope that we can be here in another 20 years.

It is not a time to pat ourselves on the back but rather to thank our community – yes we are proud.

Who’s the cook in The Ink ShopYoung household?

The kitchen is Karen’s ‘happy place’ and Eddie describes Karen as a kitchen dominator but for good reason – Karen loves to cook Japanese and Asian inspired food which all started with Karen’s connection to Japan when Karen lived there for a few years.

What Services does The Ink Shop offer in 2018?

We are one-stop-shop. We recycle and refill ink cartridges and provide new cartridges as needed – We sell the complete range of technology – We service everything.

We cover everything from refilling your ink cartridge, repairing your PC or printer, sell new PCs and printers, support the home or business networking and provide a wide range of accessories and retail needs. We have the entire home and small business market covered in one place.

How has your staff and team evolved over the years?

Fortunately in the IT game you only need a small team, however we are an extremely customer and solutionfocussed team. These days we employ a full-time manager, Ian Doig based at The Ink Shop. Ian is extremely skilled at managing the needs of our customers.

We also engage our son, Daniel, who deals with everything to do with ‘New Technology.’ My role is mostly reactive and sustaining/developing our community partnerships. Each of the team perform call-outs across the community based on our customer needs.

How do you see Bribie as a Community today?

Bribie is a terrific community. Over the past 20 years we have seen Bribie population grow significantly. The population is somewhat more transient than we first thought and the quality of schooling on Bribie Island is outstanding.

I guess these days people are busier and less aware of what’s going on in the neighbourhood. We try to make sure we communicate through our community partnerships to keep abreast of a changing demographic.

How do you partner and support the community today?

The Community has kept us in business for all these years – they have a right to ask for sponsorships and support and we will then be here for another 20 years. As our children grew up we were always part of school groups and sporting organisations. These days we try to maintain smart community partnerships for the benefit both parties.

Our best results in business have come not so much from advertising but more from sponsorship and partnering with the community.

What impact has the local customer had on The Ink Shop?

Listening to our customers is our single most important focus - It is interesting because our customers have always driven our need to grow and diversify.

It was our customers who created the demand for a diversified service that integrated our Retail and Ink business with our PC Retail and Support Service.

How can we best educate our community in the tech space?

Years ago Eddie used to present to the Seniors IT Club on Bribie. There were about 1000 members back then and we use to have about 300 attend one of my presentations.

These days, the best way is for customers to simply call us or drop in and visit us – ask questions – put your hand up and we will assist you and your family.

The “Fabulous” Art Gallery opened for five days over August at the old RSL / Bowls Club building in Main Street, Beachmere and was a resounding success in the number of artists who exhibited and the quality of the artwork displayed.

The event was well patronised by the Beachmere and Moreton Bay community along with visitors to the area, with well over a hundred people attending each day.

During that time our Resident Artist, Doreen Howes, spent an hour and a half each day sketching portraits for patrons who made a donation.

Doreen wanted to thank the community and said, ”The gold coin donation raised $61.00 for the Beachmere Op Shop For Wildlife. I sketched 19 portraits for fun and several people paid more than asked and I thank them for their kindness.

I enjoyed meeting lots of interesting people and it was good to be able to practice the quick sketches.”

Pictured is Neil Kelly, (no relation to Ned) with the artist and his portrait which Doreen helped to frame. Neil has been a Beachmere resident for over 15 years and is really pleased with Doreen’s portrayal of him. He is also happy to see the community spirit is thriving here.

Doreen would also like to thank Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) for the opportunity they have given her and all the other artists to display their work in a well run event.

After becoming the first council in South East Queensland to make the pledge to phase out single-use plastic straws, Moreton Bay Regional Council has now removed plastic straws at Council-operated venues and events.

(Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism) will also require market and food vendors to comply with the region’s new direction on single-use plastic straws beginning with the next major event, Moreton Kids Festival in October.

This simple measure, will hopefully make a huge difference on the overall amount of non-biodegradable plastics ending up in landfill or in our waterways and patrons will no longer be given single-use plastic straws at facilities like the Morayfield Sport and Events Centre or Redcliffe Cultural Centre.

Moreton Bay, one of the country’s most important coastal resources, comes to mind as part of our responsibility to make sure rubbish like single-use straws doesn’t end up harming local marine life. I hope this pledge by Council inspires our local sporting and community groups to join the cause as well as local businesses to do the same and follow suit.

Every year, on the second of September, families across Australia come together to celebrate perhaps one of the most influential figures in their lives- their father. The day is filled with laughter and the recalling of fond memories- whether that be the terrible jokes or looking back at old pictures. It is a time for appreciating the fathers across Australia for all that they do for their families. Many younger children make handmade gifts and cards, families also chose to participate in activities such as boating or lunches. Despite being celebrated on different dates in other countries, this universally recognised day is a momentous occasion for many people.

Father’s Day is thought to have originated in the United States in the 1910’s and quickly spread across the world. Many traditions have also become prevalent in multiple cultures when celebrating this day. In Germany, fathers dress up in odd outfits to celebrate their day. Mexicans gather around to watch the El Día Parade, the main feature of the parade being a twenty-one-kilometre race in Mexico City, this is called the Carrera del Día del Parade. In Nepal, many Nepalese take part in religious rituals called Gokarna Aunsi.

This ritual involves spending quality time with fathers, honouring them by offering food and gifts and praying for fathers who may have passed on. In Thailand, people used to wear yellow and presented their fathers with a canna flower, symbolic of the masculinity they represent. However, in recent years the

In Australia most families can be found out fishing or enjoying a nice lunch. In Victoria, the state continues tradition by awarding the Local Community Father of the Year. Each year children are given the opportunity to nominate their father by writing or drawing about what their dad does for them and why their dad is so important to themselves.

It can be seen that all across the world, families get together to celebrate the amazing things that their dads do for them. From helping their children to learn to ride a bike to being a support system, fathers deserved to be recognised for their efforts. It only takes a few minutes to call and wish a happy Father’s Day or to write a card and it makes all the difference. Many father’s look back on previous gifts and memories with a fond recollection, remembering the handmade cards covered in glitter or the coupons books that, still years later are sought after. Father’s Day is a time for spending with family and creating new memories. Wishing all the fathers out there, a happy Father’s Day.

Rotary Charity Race Day

Every September the Rotary Clubs of Bribie Island, Caboolture and Sunshine Coast Central, combine to hold a Charity Race Day, at Corbould Park, Caloundra.

This year will be our 16th year and the meeting will be held on Sunday, 9 September 2018. Attendees can choose between a number of options – from general admission (where they buy their own lunch – or bring it with them) to a Luncheon Soiree in the VIP Favourites Room. A bus is also provided ($25pp) which will take you to and from the Race meeting. Details to register your interest are set out in the flyer below.

Since its inception the Race day has raised over $360,000 for Rotary and much needed local Projects. Many Rotarians and friends from throughout our District - Brisbane, Gympie, Murgon, Kingaroy and the Sunshine Coast get together for a fun day.

Each year we select a Rotary program as principal recipient of the funds raised.

This year funds will go to “Lift the Lid on Mental Illness” a National mental health fundraising and awareness initiative of Australian Rotary Health, that aims to raise funds for mental health research.

A timely contribution in view of the depression and suicides happening in our rural communities due to the drought.

Members of Rotary clubs provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotary reaches out to community, business and professional leaders and their organisations to support Rotary projects. There are many ways that

Community people and organisations may contribute.

Some join Rotary, others offer their skills and experience, or give donations and sponsorships. Partnering your business with us for a Rotary project is yet another way to benefit both you and your community. Our motto is “Service Above Self”.

For those who have never attended a race day this is a fine opportunity to experience one of Australia’s greatest pastimes. Costs for the day are entirely up to the individual and a little flutter with “Bob the Bookie” on that “grey outsider” might well pay for any expenses you have.

So, come and help us raise funds for a worthwhile cause ! And, get ready to make your “Marx” at our “Day at the Races”. You do not need to be a Rotarian to attend but you will meet some very interesting people – perhaps even the illustrious “Dr Hackenbush”.

‘Basic Education and Literacy’ In Rotary This Month.

By Anne Matthews - Public Relations Director, Rotary Club of Bribie Island For those ‘Briberians’ who may not know, the addition of January and February to our calendar moved the months September, October, November, and December to later in the year so they now no longer correspond with the original meaning of their names. In the Roman calendar, September’s original name in Latin meant “seventh” month. September comes from the Latin root “septem”, meaning “seven,” because in the original Roman republican calendar September was the seventh month of the year rather than the ninth. Today’s September marks the beginning of Spring in Australia, and indeed, new life, as can

be seen in our gardens. What better month to hold Rotary’s “Basic Education and Literacy” promotion – something that can create a new life for those who participate.

Did you also know that almost 800 million of the world’s population over the age of 15 are illiterate? In developed countries we know that basic education and literacy are essential for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace. Yet so many do not have these basic skills. This can be seen in developing countries such as Kenya, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, Liberia and The Philippines, where poverty remains as the primary cause of illiteracy.

In 1985 Rotary declared basic literacy to be a pre-condition to the development of peace. Today, Rotary clubs all over the world are taking action to enhance basic education and literacy in their communities. Rotary supports education for all children and literacy for children and adults. It is worth us all acknowledging that the World’s future is in our children !

As part of its commitment to basic education, the Rotary Club of Bribie Island is providing the “Teacher in a Box” program and training in its use to people in PNG. Teacher in a Box (TIB) uses re-purposed laptops, which act as both a browser and a server, to provide offline access to over 10,000 educational and vocational videos which are stored in the system. The system can also be accessed by a Wi-Fi device. We take internet access for granted, but this is such a wonderful tool for rural villages and countries where there is limited, or no, internet access.

Locally, we support education through our Rotary Youth programs and with our EarlyAct and Interact Clubs. For example, Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) is a program for 14-17 years olds,

which aims to provide young people with the opportunity to develop their potential and self-esteem. The program is for those who aren’t already leaders and helps them develop their leadership skills so that they can excel in their chosen fields.

Internationally, Rotary members have made amazing things happen, such as: Opening schools: In Afghanistan, Rotary

Through the program, a child receives an age-appropriate book each month until age five. Rotary clubs throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom have been teaming up with Dolly to bring books to children in hundreds of local communities. This is not a 9 to 5 operation – but 24/7.

Senior Gentle Chair Exercises

Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new.

You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

WHAT’S IN A NAME

The exercises below are stretching and balance exercises similar to what we do in Heartbeats classes. When the exercises work one leg at a time – think about your body, does one hip have better movement than the other?

Is one knee more stable/stronger than the other? Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if walking and/or turning are difficult.

If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does becomes easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

Chair Knee Lifts

Use a stable chair for support – but do not lean as chair may tip or slide Stand with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Raise one foot up to a height that is comfortable for YOU! Hold for a count of “one and two” Lower foot back to ground and hold for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly on the other leg – remember one leg may be more stable than the other Only do as many knee raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

Chair Arm Raises

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Rest arms on your legs.

Reach both arms out from body keeping them as straight as you are comfortable with Hold for count of “one and two” Reach up to a place you are comfortable with and hold for a count of “one and two” Slowly lower arms back to resting on your knees Repeat slowly, only do as many are raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

Chair Back Stretch

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Have feet slightly apart and feet flat on the ground Lace the fingers of your hands together and place them across the front of your right knee. SLOWLY Lean as far toward your right knee as you can comfortable go, breathing out as you do. Do not pull on your knee to help your reach forward! Hold for the count “one and two” SLOWLY return to an upright position. Spend 3 seconds leaning forward and 3 seconds returning.

Repeat 4 times on the right side then repeat on the left. Rest

Chair 3/4 Squats

Use a very stable chair! Stand behind the chair and place your hands on the top of the chair back. SLOWLY Squat slightly, lowering your hips about 4 inches, making sure your knees don’t extend beyond your toes. Count “one and two” on the way lowering yourself Hold for a count “one and two” And SLOWLY stand back up Wait for a count of 20 before repeating Focus on trying to keep your heels down, if you can. Remember one leg may be more flexible than the other leg – that is ok! Only go as low as is comfortable for you and both heels remain on the ground. Repeat slowly only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up. Rest

He further completed a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Technology (post-registration) at Griffith University in 2012. Ernie-James continued his education in prosthetic dentistry and completed a Master of Dental Prosthetics in 2013, where he was awarded, The School of Dentistry and Oral Health Clinical Award. His Masters research focused on the psychology of denture patients and it’s affect towards prognosis, diagnosis and treatment outcomes.

More recently (2015), Ernie-James has been involved within student learning, undertaking a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education at Griffith University.

During his formal studies in higher education, he has been involved with the School of Dentistry and Oral Health as a Visiting Associate Lecturer in Dental Prosthetics. This includes, supervising postgraduate students during their clinical sessions, supervising

both dental technology and dental science undergraduates during their technical laboratory sessions, lecturing clinical prosthetic theory, and exam moderation.

Currently, Ernie-James is completing a professional doctorate in Psychology.

As a practicing dental prosthetist, Ernie-James is a member of the Australian Dental Prosthetist Association (ADPA) and frequently attends conferences to continue his professional development.

stimulating activities with others appears to impede the decline caused by dementia related conditions we carefully research the activities we run. They are designed to be challenging but at a level that allows people to participate fully and feel satisfied with their efforts. My husband Loy & I have been trading at Bribie Island Bakehouse (located at Banksia Beach and Sandstone Point) since Feb 2001. We are a locally owned and operated family business.

My Husband and I moved to bribe and purchased our first shop just before the birth of our first child. The following year we had our second child.

Our children attended our local primary schools, and both have participate in local sports teams, they are now in high school so consequently my husband and I have supported our local clubs and proved them with our catering services.

Identify theft is a threat in every scam Most people associate scams with attempts to trick you out of your money. However, your information is also valuable to scammers.

Scammers steal your personal details to commit fraudulent activities like making unauthorised purchases on your credit card or using your identity to open bank or telephone accounts. They might take out loans or carry out other illegal business under your name.

They may even sell your information to other scammers for further illegal use.

Having your identity stolen can be both financially and emotionally devasting. It can take months to reclaim your identity and the impact of having it stolen can last for years.

Phishing – a scammer contacts you out of the blue via email, phone, facebook or text message pretending to be from a legitimate business such as a bank, phone or internet service provider. They direct you to a fake version of the business’s website asking for your personal details to verify customer records due to a technical error. They may call imitating a luxury goods retailer claiming that someone is trying to use your credit card.

They advise you to contact your bank, but they don’t hang up from their end and keep the line open. When you try to call the bank, you are still talking to the scammers who simulate a real call, imitate bank staff and ask for your account and security details. In either case, the scammer captures whatever

Community information you give them and then uses it to access your accounts.

Fake Surveys – Scammers offer prizes or rewards such as gift cards to well-known retailers in return for completing an online survey. The survey requires you to answer a range of questions including disclosure of important identification or banking details.

As part of any scam – Scammers often ask for personal information in other scams. In a lottery scam, scammers often ask for a driver’s licence or passport to prove your identity before they can release the prize money. In dating and romance scams they might ask for information to sponsor their visa application to visit you in Australia.

Remember – Giving away personal information to a scammer can be just as bad as giving away money. Keep your personal details to yourself and keep them secure.

Protect yourself • Think Twice about what you say and do in an online environment. Be careful sharing information about yourself online, including social media, blogs and other online forums. Stop and think before filling in surveys, entering competitions, clicking on links or attachments or even befriending, liking or sharing something online.

• Beware of any request for your details or money. Scammers will try to trick you into handling over your data by using the names of well-known companies or government departments. If you think it’s a scam, don’t respond. Use the phone book or an online search to checkthe organisations contact details.

Respect is becoming an archaic value As Australian politics implodes and we are left red faced in the modern world, I ask myself – has the value of respect disappeared entirely?

You must make an effort to understand what they stand for – their attitudes, values and beliefs and you must show an understanding for peoples differing opinion, but if the current political climate is anything to go by, it would suggest that this theory is no longer in play.

I myself do not know much about politics – I don’t have to vote but what I do know is that, over the past week, our politicians have shown very little respect to one another. At Bribie High school, we have four school values: with respect of the utmost importance. Respect one another and respect for our community – none of which these politicians have shown.

Firstly, the in-fighting that has been reported shows that none of them have a ‘real’ friend within their own party. The ousted one and then three of them went up against each other, trying to, behind the backs of the others, gain support for themselves. Secondly, the impact on society has been enormous. It has filled

Metro North Hospital and Health Service will compete for the title of Queensland Large Employer of the Year next month, thanks to the success of our school-based traineeship program.

The prestigious state-wide training awards celebrate excellence in vocational education and training, with regional winners heading to the state finals next month. Metro North was recognised as Large Employer of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards North Coast region event.

Co-ordinator of Education and Youth Engagement, Kylie Boccuzzi, said being named Large Employer of the Year for our region was a huge accolade for the Youth Engagement Programs that include school-based traineeship program and a Healthcare Academy vocational pathway programs.

“Our school-based traineeship program supports high school students to earn vocational education qualifications in healthcare while working at Redcliffe, Caboolture and Kilcoy Hospitals, as well as our Community and Oral Health Directorate,” Ms Boccuzzi said. “We’ve been offering schools-based traineeships for 13 years. So far, we’ve helped 183 students to earn a qualification through a traineeship.

“In addition to this we have supported 45 students complete vocational qualifications in healthcare academy programs over the last three years.”

Ms Boccuzzi said that there were currently 49 school-based trainees and 42 Healthcare Academy students earning their qualifications at Metro North facilities in Moreton Bay and Brisbane’s northern suburbs.

“In 2019, we’ll be offering another 30 traineeships, and 40 Academy places in areas including Nursing, Aged Care, Business Administration, Allied Health Assistants, Dental Assisting, Patient Support Services and Recreational Officers.

“We’re really proud of our school-based trainees and academy students, and how many of them have launched their careers in healthcare after completing their qualifications with us,” Ms Boccuzzi said.

Siobhan Hayter graduated in 2016 with a Certificate III in Health Services Assistant and is now employed as an administration officer in the maternity ward at Caboolture Hospital.

The former Tullawong State High School student said her School Based Traineeship at Caboolture Hospital provided an array of opportunities for a future career in health.

“I was able to develop various skills and network with future colleagues and mentors in the profession of nursing and midwifery,” Siobhan said.

“Grasping these concepts early on not only allowed for me to secure a job within the hospital, but it made the transition from high-school to undergraduate study seamless.

“This kind of ‘real-world’ education is extremely rare and would not have been possible without my traineeship.”

Dangerous Road Needs Upgrade Simone Wilson MP, Member for Pumicestone said that the lack of acknowledgment by the Palaszczuk Labor Government regarding the condition of Beachmere Road is alarming.

“Since being elected I have continually raised the need for Beachmere Road to be upgraded particularly parts where there is no sealed road shoulder and narrow driving lanes,” Mrs Wilson said.

Mrs Wilson said that Beachmere Road is part of the State’s road network and has seen a significant increase in traffic over the past few years with an average of 6,000 vehicles a day using the road*.

Whilst the Queensland Government drags its feet on this important issue, it’s great to see the Commonwealth step up and commit to the Save Our Schoolkids (SOS) campaign that will make a real

difference and potentially save little lives.

Surely the safety of children is paramount.

The Liberal National Party believe that swimming is an essential life skill for Queensland kids.

Tragically, child drownings in backyard swimming pools, local waterways and dams are becoming more frequent.

The Royal Life Saving Society drowning report indicated that for 2016/17, 73 people of all ages in Queensland drowned, an increase on the previous year.

The LNP’s policy to provide universal access to swimming and water safety lessons to all Queensland primary schools will bring Queensland in line with other states and territories on promoting water safety and education to children.

With the warmer Spring season just around the corner where over a third of all drownings occur in Australia, the Queensland Government cannot sit on its hands any longer.

We owe it to our kids to give them an important life skill that delivers health and lifestyle benefits as well.

The Happy Horticulturist - Soils ain’t Soils - By Mick O’Brien Dip.Hort

I have been writing about replenishing soils for nearly two years now and it never ceases to amaze me how I can still find more relevant information each month and put these articles together while keeping it informative and inspiring for our wonderful readers in Bribie Island and Surrounding districts- and today is no exception. The more I see firsthand, the flourishing gardens that can be achieved on our predominantly sandy soils, the more inspiration I get to formulate and create my next column accordingly.

The absolute best thing for me, is not only being able to write these columns, but it’s also meeting the locals over time who share my enthusiasm and inspiration too. And the fact that many of my clients have the same vision on sustainable gardening philosophies further ignites my spark within and fuels my spirit to continue my current career path (creating and maintaining gardens and writing about plants, soils and sustainability). Creating a new landscape that attracts a natural biodiversity of native animals like our pollinators- birds, bees and butterflies and our natural predators like frogs, lizards and dragonflies is at the top of my list.

This can become a challenge sometimes as our mindset might need tweaking to think about the consequences in everything we do, from composting our food waste, reducing our waste in general and having less reliance on harsh chemicals that can harm our wildlife, poison our soils, our fruits or ourselves in the process as well.

As a consulting Horticulturist and owner of a successful gardening business on Bribie island, I am frequently meeting new clients who are proud of their lawns- just like myself, which may need constant care and attention- which unfortunately, can be somewhat reliant on chemicals, fertilisers, mowing and frequent irrigation to look their best, but if your gardening on sandy soils and you have little organic matter in your soil profile, then what chance does the soil have to sustain itself during our hot summers in Qld? Ultimately, the single best thing we can do for our lawn is use a mulching mower to recycle those nutritious lawn clippings back into the soil surface which in turn adds some vital organic matter back into the soil profile. That way you are not wasting your fertiliser either!

Atractocarpus fitzalanii or Native Gardenia

Atractocarpus fitzalanii is a handsome, native, evergreen small tree that can reach over 6 metres tall and 3 metres wide in its natural rainforest environment. But most trees vary from 3 to 6 metres in cultivation. The Native Gardenia forms a beautiful dome shaped canopy adorned with large, glossy-green, oval-shaped leaves up to 18cm long and 5cm wide with prominent yellow veins and midrib. Atractocarpus fitzalanii was formerly known as Randia fitzalanii, but the Native Gardenia it will always be remembered for, due to its similar fragrance to the common Gardenia. The Native Gardenia is also referred to as the Yellow Mangosteen tree, due to the fruit similarities also. Atractocarpus fitzalanii blooms in Spring with white, fragrant, star-shaped flowers, followed by small fruits about the size of a passionfruit. The fruits eventually turn yellow when ripe and were considered good bush tucker by the Aboriginal people. They thrive in well drained soils and prefer to be sheltered from strong winds but can tolerate full sun to part shade conditions. One of My Favourites!

Spring is in the Air Compos if you Dare

Well it’s no secret that fully composted green waste has a profound effect on creating a soil rich in microbial life, but as the overall fertility increases, the soil becomes a storehouse of plant available nutrients which also sustains the beneficial soil biology population and improves the soil structure as more humus is produced with the assistance of the humble earth worms over time. And due to our predominantly sandy soils here on Bribie Island, any addition of compost or vermi-compost which consists usually of a slightly moist, dark- friable, spongy organic material to our soils will also assist in holding moisture in the root zone, which is beneficial to all plant life and soil microorganisms alike. So now that the soil is slowly warming with the onset of spring weather, this is the golden opportunity to give your gardens the best start by adding that vital life-giving and sustaining organic matter now, to the reap the benefits later on in the season, when the temperatures start to soar.

What sort of compost? - Any organic matter that has been composted will be of value, but I prefer the home-made compost created from decaying leaf litter, lawn clippings and kitchen scraps. The only problem here is the time factor and turnaround to make enough compost to use in your garden all year round. Some people fear the attraction of unwanted vermin trying to feed on the decaying kitchen scraps which could lead to baiting for rats and the like, and as we live in a close-knit residential community, we should to be mindful of any potential hazards created for our neighbours also. The good old black plastic bottomless compost vessel- that sits in the corner of your yard is a great start as you can partially bury the shell into the soil to prevent access to vermin, but these can be relatively slow to produce friable compost as there is no turning of the heap which lacks aeration. All compost heaps require a Carbon base: (The brown) at the bottom which consists of the-twiggy, leaf matter or lawn clippings and then cover with kitchen scraps for Nitrogen: (The green) then repeat the alternate layers accordingly. The material heats up as the microorganism’s start to break it all down. This is particularly evident when you notice the heat coming from fresh decaying lawn clippings piled in a heap in your garden, which is why it’s a great additive for your compost as it aids in the decomposition of the whole medium.

With nearly 650 visitors over just five days, Fabulous Art Beachmere exhibited over 200 pieces of art by 75 artists.

The Opening & Awards Night was attended by over 130 artists, locals and guests and included a Welcome to Country by Gubbi Gubbi representative Christine Stuart.

“In Queensland, the 1st August marks the beginning of bushfire season and we all need to be aware of this and plan,” Ms Wilson said.

The 3D category was won by local jeweller Diane Poole for her silver smith skills on a silver and pearl “Calla Lily” pendant, and the 3D Highly Commended went to Peter Guilfoyle for “The Sandpiper”.

The Junior Category was won by Zac Pettigrew and the Highly Commended awarded to Elizabeth Rubin. Moreton Bay region artist Ellie Nielson also awarded an Encouragement Award this year, with the recipient being Cameron Roelofs.

Fabulous Art Beachmere is held every two years and has grown into one of the premier events on the Beachmere social calendar. With Moreton Bay Regional Council stepping in to offer the Beachmere clubhouse as a venue the event was able to exhibit all the artwork submitted. The friendliness of the volunteers, and the variety and outstanding quality of the artwork, engendered forgiveness for the “poor” lighting, with the overall comment being “Fabulous”!

The Palaszczuk Government will continue to weed-out underperforming and incompetent training providers as it strives to improve the quality of vocational education and training (VET) across Queensland.

Minister for Training and Skills Development Shannon Fentiman said that Queenslanders had the right to receive high-quality training and there was no place in the VET space for organisations unable to meet the required standards.

“Since the Palaszczuk Government was elected in 2015, 174 training providers have been closed down either because they were not providing quality training or have not been up to the task,” Ms Fentiman said.

“We have shown we will not tolerate inadequate performance and there will be no letup either in standards or scrutiny.”

Ms Fentiman said the performance of training providers was regularly monitored and those pre-qualified suppliers who failed to meet strict requirements faced losing their authority to deliver government-subsidised training, “Under the Palaszczuk Government, Queensland has led the way in partnering with the Australian Skills Quality Authority – the national regulator of vocational education and training, to raise confidence in the quality of training in our state,” she said.

In 2017 the Palaszczuk Government introduced the Queensland VET Quality Framework to ensure continual improvements, to set the standards for training, to provide information to students and employers, to monitor the effectiveness of programs, and to ensure compliance.

Ms Fentiman said she made no apology for setting high standards for providers.

“Queenslanders deserve nothing less than the best vocational and skills training available,” she said.

Since it was established in 2015, the Queensland Training Ombudsman had secured more than $500,000 for students in fee refunds and helped thousands of complainants to resolve their issues with training providers.

“The message to providers could not be clearer – only the highest-quality training is good enough for Queensland students and in this way we will continue to improve the productivity and quality of Queensland’s businesses,” Ms Fentiman said.

For something more creative you could join the new Jewellery Crafting class conducted at the Bribie Gem & Fossicking Club on Tuesday mornings.

For former Piano players there is an exciting Music Keyboard workshop on Wednesday afternoons for pianists who would like to get their fingers going again, and develop a creative approach to music interpretation.

There are more than 150 other classes run at U3A every week day. You can find the Daily Timetable at the U3A Centre, the Library, Visitor Info Centre or Neighbourhood Centre, and even if you don’t join a class you can still become a Member of U3A by paying the $5 fee for the rest of the year.

Membership entitles you to early Enrolment, attendance at Functions, Theatre Group trips and participation in excursions run by U3A. The hard working volunteers on the U3A Committee are implementing many changes to improve the process of class continuation and new enrolments in anticipation of even more Senior students next year.

New and existing Members can enrol in Term 4 classes on any weekday during office hours at U3A before Term 3

finishes on Friday 21 September.

Enrolment Day for Term 4 on Tuesday 2nd October at U3A Centre from 9am till noon, after the Queen’s Birthday holiday Monday.

Fascism’s genesis – in Australia?

No – Couldn’t Be !

This perverted political trollop slimed onto the human stage in Europe, Italy in fact, during the early 1930’s.

It’s symbol, for the various political “ isms “, must have an identifying symbol, was a bunch of sticks, lashed together signifying strength in numbers or, if you like, many together are better than one alone.

Not much wrong with that; it makes pretty good sense. It is the practical application of the principle which creates the difficulty.

Fascism is an authoritarian system of Government. It allows no opposition, no criticism and it completely envelopes the society it seeks to rule, and all of this is done in the name of delivering benefits to society: making all our lives better.

This political philosophy, of course, needs enemies and threats to continue with its draconian rule- and contemporary history tells us the shocking stories of Fascism and Nazism combining into an evil that engulfed the World in WW2 – destroying tens upon tens of millions of lives.

Men and women from our country fought this evil, and they won. And, “ All of us, the living and the yet to be born, must be eternally grateful. “ [ Cornelius Ryan ].

So you may ask…well what is Cranky Lizard on about now?

What Cranky Lizard is on about is a disturbing echo on the radar which indicates the presence of an embryonic fascist ghost appearing amongst us.

How could that be? We defeated fascism; it has gone into the dustbin of history.

Has it?

Fascism targets specific groups or communities in our society and commences to isolate and destroy that target…in the name of protecting the culture and the Government.

It began in Germany in the 1930 ’s; if you were Jewish, Adolph Hitler decreed that you were an enemy of the state and should be destroyed : thus began a shameful period in human history.

Subsequently, there have been many scholars, social scientists and political leaders who have wrung their hands and stated that they wished they had spoken out against this evil as it began – maybe they could have prevented the catastrophe?

Cranky Lizard does not predict a catastrophe is likely to grow from the ghostly radar echoes of the Fascist ghost, but, note this.

In recent times a group of people, in Queensland have been singled out for particular legislation curtailing some of their activities. Such action has been taken to protect Local Government and State Government from the alleged corrupt behaviour of these particular people.

These people are developers. Legitimate businessmen and businesswomen who play a vital part in the life of our nation.

They build communities, parklands, shopping centres, city buildings, high rise buildings without which our cities would be devoid of human habitation after business hours.

Again, in recent times, some developers, not all, have featured in investigations of corrupt and illegal behaviour by elected officials in Queensland Local Government.

Consequent to these investigations, recommendations were made to the State Government, that developers be prevented from making donations of money, goods or other such chattels, which may be construed as beneficial to the Local Government candidate; thus creating political favour which could be called upon by developers when Local Government land zoning and re-zoning matters were before a Local Government Council.

The idea found favour with the State Government; and subsequently, all developers are prevented, by law, from making any donations of any kind to any political party in Queensland.

The purpose of this legislation is to protect the members of Local and State Government from the ‘ pernicious ‘ influence of developers, hoping to gain favours, from various levels of government, from their donations to political parties.

The Queensland State Government is a legally and duly elected government and has every right to make laws and enact legislation as it sees fit – of that there is no question.

Cranky Lizard wonders why it is developers, and only developers, who have been singled out for this treatment.

Medical realities in Kokoda today

SEEN AROUND Naba, John & Rosemary Kokoda has a special place in the hearts of Australians but few are aware of the need for a reliable medical service. In 1995 Australia’s former Prime Minister, Paul Keating, opened the Kokoda Memorial Hospital, funded by Rotary. Since then teams of Rotarians have returned regularly with donations of equipment and medical supplies. What is needed is an ongoing, guaranteed supply of medicines from government. When I last heard there was no permanent doctor there.

Medical care across rural PNG is very limited. In the whole country there are fewer than 400 doctors for 8 million people. Compare this with Brisbane Women’s hospital which had 410 doctors

in June this year. PNG women are 80 times more likely to die during childbirth than in Australia. Causes include severe bleeding, infections and eclampsia. This still happens in Kokoda villages as it does in some rural Queensland districts where maternity support has been reduced, according to recent media reports.

However, some groups are helping PNG people access the sort of care we take for granted here. The Australian organisation Children First has brought children who need specialist care to Australia for treatment. The Digital Foundation PNG has funded 31 mobile health clinics, but only one is in Oro Province which includes Kokoda and Popondetta. PNG received

Last month I wrote about walking up the Trail from Kokoda in 1969, with Biage boys from my class at the primary school there.

Now, in 2018, those boys are middle-aged, as are my sons.

One of those Biage boys was John. These days my sons and I keep regular contact and stay with his family in their small village when we visit. The houses are constructed mainly from bush materials, as is the toilet built for guests. The nearby creek serves as a bathroom, with males and females using separate sections to bathe.

These unions are not, however, subject to the legislation preventing developers from doing the same thing.

Why?

Are developers different?

Who knows – the legislation exists and is currently subject to legal challenge.

Cranky Lizard, does not, for obvious reasons, buy into the legal matters around this legislation.

Cranky Lizard questions the specificity of the targets – developers, by donating to Local Government candidates, could generate a bank of political favours and thus must be stopped.

Are Local Government people that inept, that they can’t work out for themselves that they place themselves in political jeopardy by accepting donations from men and women, who may have ulterior motives for making political contributions?

If they cannot – and it seems as if the current legislation confirms this – then we have a problem with the quality of the candidates!

Not the developers.

Cranky Lizard asks the next question. Where does it stop?

Whose is next in this rush to protect the legislators from citizens who make donations to political parties?

The list is impossible because the motivation for this legislation seems to be to protect the existing government and prevent any meaningful opposition: that leads Cranky Lizard to repeat that Fascism, like Banquo, has a ghost.

Some readers may remember from the days of their childhood or reading to their own children the excellent story from Dr Seuss – The Star Bellied Sneetches?

This legislation reminds Cranky Lizard of that story. and carried on heads to the village houses.

John’s wife and her daughter cook very tasty meals on a kerosene stove. They have a generator and a mobile phone.

Sadly, John is no longer with us.

When John had a heart attack, someone had to ride a bike a couple of kilometres to reach Kokoda Hospital to get help. No doctor was there.

Recently John’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and needed surgery.

Her village is 75 km from Popondetta.

Fortunately, in March this year Popondetta General Hospital gained a refurbished operating theatre.

The usual transport from Kokoda is some sort of truck, with far too many passengers squatting or standing in the back. It’s a very rough road.

Her Australian friends were very worried.

How could she survive the long, rough trip to hospital and back? Who would do the necessary mastectomy? What about the danger of infection? What about post-op follow-up?

They decided to raise the money required to hire a comfortable vehicle to transport her to and fro. The medical expenses were also far too expensive. Extra money was sought and found for that too. She returned to her village only days after surgery.

Two weeks later our friend returned to Popondetta to have her stitches removed.

No infection was found. Cross your fingers that she continues to do well because no chemotherapy or radiation treatment is available.

And – by whose standards shall we judge them?

Do we then judge them by the standards of integrity and honesty common to our current political climate?

That would be interesting?

Men and women on both sides of our political spectrum display, on a regularly distressing and frequent basis that our standards of integrity and honesty need a fair bit of bloody work!

So that won’t work.

We know because we read about it in august organs of the print media, such as The Australian; that there is an enquiry into the battlefield behaviour of Australian troops in the field of combat in Afghanistan.

We also know that the troops in the frame are the soldiers of the Australian Special Air Service – the SAS. We also know that the enquiry is being conducted by an eminent being, draped, possibly even cloaked in law degrees – but apparently not much in the way of battlefield experience. Military service in the Reserve Force, yes, but combat command and experience ?

This does not disqualify this person from conducting the enquiry – he is the Inspector General of the Australian Defence Force and has been chosen for that role by his professional eminence.

We also know that the enquiry had its genesis in the secret report from a Canberra sociologist who was covertly inserted into the ranks of returned soldiers from Afghanistan with the sole purpose of “ discovering the culture “ of these men.

Now, that is a bloody good start. An enquiry based upon the secret testimony of a Canberra sociologist. A sociologist who describes herself on her Twitter account as a “ sociologist, feminist and taxidermist “ and who holds a PhD from ANU for her research into the treatment of women with breast cancer.

Nothing I say here is pejorative about the Doctor. No ridicule is directed towards her qualifications – I am merely stating the fact that this was the person who wrote a secret report into the activities of returned members of the armed forces from Afghanistan and gave it to the ADF, who refused to release the taxpayerfunded report to the public.

Why? Why not release the report? The ADF says that the report will create controversial public comment. So what?

A Defence expert has commented – [ diversity training, PC classes, pink fingernails, unbalanced recruitment targets, don’t create controversial public comment?]

So, on the face of it, these soldiers and their actions, their thinking and their mindset have already been judged by an anonymous sociologist from Canberra!

And, subsequent to this judgement, a formal enquiry, by the Inspector General of the Australian Defence Force was instituted into the battlefield actions of these soldiers.

We don’t know what standards were used by the Canberra sociologist to judge these soldiers – because the report is secret. So we can only guess what a self-declared ‘ sociologist, feminist and taxidermist ‘ would use as standards

to judge combat soldiers from some of the most vicious and personal combat operations ever conducted by Australian troops.

I stand mute, in public, palms extended and the letters “ BS “ floating in a thought bubble above my head.

I have, many years ago now, heard, felt and smelt the sounds of military combat in Vietnam. I was an Artillery Officer, calling artillery, air strikes and naval gunfire onto the communist forces that confronted us …enemy soldiers were killed in action during these moments, they were supposed to be! That is why we were there. Military combat is a brutal killing business, it is not a game and there are no trays of oranges at half time.

None!

I can tell you all, that I would not want a ‘ sociologist, feminist and taxidermist ‘ examing my actions during that time and writing a secret report about them. No Sir, I would not. The only regret that I have about those moments on the battlefield in Vietnam is that I was not able to destroy more communist soldiers than I did. Is that grounds for a secret enquiry by a Canberra sociologist, feminist and taxidermist ??

I bloody well think not.

So, we move on. The secret report has now become a formal enquiry by the Inspector General of the Australian Defence Force.

Do we judge these men by the standards of the society in which they fought?

Afghanistan in those years was a brutal place; the Taliban were and are religious zealots, they kill as quickly as changing shirts. They deceive, they appear and disappear, they hide amongst villagers, women, children, defenceless old villagers and they know that our soldiers are bound by a code of decency that prevents them from acting in the same fashion as they, the Taliban act.

So, I don’t suppose we can judge them by the standards of the Afghanistan society at that time.

Well, what standards apply?

Do we use the International War Crimes Commission? A body which has its house in the Netherlands and spends much of its time condemning Israel and the United States for action those nations take against international terrorists – although this body has shown some interest in the activities of Russia in Ukraine, but not much in Syria.

The possibility of using the IWCC standards in making a judgement against our combat soldiers indeed exists, although I doubt that this body would deliver a fair and reasonable assessment of what went on in Afghanistan some time ago.

In my many years in the military, during the 1960 ’s, 1970’s and 1980’s it was impressed upon me, indeed driven into my soul mercilessly, by Instructors of young Officers and, as time passed more Senior Officers, that there is an iron rule in the military, a law that stands unchallenged – “ there are no bad soldiers, just poor Officers! “ And indeed, in my experience, it is so.

We can explore that, in the context of this opinion piece.

The troops under investigation had a different command structure than all the other Australian forces in Afghanistan.

upon them by political requirements, by a desire to keep some of the SAS activities ring-fenced from other sections of the Australian Army, who knows?

What I do know, and military experience tells me so – that once you begin to make ‘special command arrangements’ for individual sections of the deployed force, the integrity of the command structure is affected.

So did we make our own problem?

I believe we did.

And I believe that we must be very, very careful how we attend to this matter; for Australian soldiers are decent men and women, they do not torture, they do not commit murder, they do not act as battlefield thugs. They are tough, hardminded men and women. To paraphrase the words of US Marines – Australian soldiers are ‘ no better friends and no worse an enemy. ‘ By what standards would you judge them?

Bribie Island Pilot turned Author shares stories of flight

John Chandler at Caboolture Airfield John’s passion for writing takes flight John Chandler often looks to the sky whenever he hears a plane flying overhead.

The 85-year-old from Bribie Island experienced flying for the first time at the age of 14 and from then on, he was hooked on aviation. He learned to fly in his early 20s and went for a commercial pilot’s licence five years later.

“In those days you had to complete military service and I was called up to the air force. Six-hundred people volunteered for flying training at RAAF Laverton in Victoria, 20 of us were selected and I was one of 15 who graduated,” John says.

“I applied to be a commercial pilot with Qantas, TAA and Ansett. Ansett said ‘yes’ but the starting salary was less than half of what I was earning as a civil engineer.”

John flew extensively for business and pleasure, with his work seeing him fly and co-pilot small aircraft around Australia and the Pacific Islands.

“I used my commercial flying licence as an adjunct to my professional career as a civil engineer and would fly myself as an endorsed user of single and twin-engine aircraft,” John says.

The retiree, who suffered a stroke and “took two years to get back to a normal lifestyle”, receives help from Carinity Home Care Bribie Island around the house.

John, who only gave up flying at the age of 80, wrote the book My Flying Career: A Recollection about his time in the sky. He recently donated copies of the book to Bribie Island Library and Bribie Island Seaside Museum.

The pensioner has also written a new e-book about his life as a pilot, entitled John’s Story: My Reach for the Sky.

Bribie Island Boat Charters

August Fishing Report- the ISLAND and Surrounds.

Well, here they are, regular as clockwork – isn’t it uncanny? Those westerlies that come with EKKA bring chilly days and change fishing in the Passage and around Bribie. The breeze generally lifts through the day, sometimes swinging between north and south. Around midday, when the wind direction might be changing, and the water has warmed a little, has proved to be a useful time to throw a line.

EKKA winds make fishing forecasting tricky and targeting of any particular species unpredictable. This is the start of the “between-seasons” period and every day can be different from the last. Windy days are not all bad – get up into Ningi Creek and the other estuaries, where fish are attracted to water that is stirred a little and you can use the wind to make a good, long cast.

Tailor are still showing up right through the Pumicestone Passage. Red has said that this seems to be a very big tailor year, with big schools in the bay and in all the gutters over at Moreton Island.

Just past South Point, over the first EKKA weekend, Toby and Mark got among a big school of baitfish. There were plenty of tailor out there, “going crazy”, along with swooping birds and at least a couple of black-tipped sharks.

Ron hasn’t needed to go far for his fishing – he watches from his Bribie front porch for the tell-tale sight of birds gathering over a school of fish. Then, off he charges, with the fishing rod, over the road and straight into the water, standing thigh-deep, and casting slug-lures out after the tailor. Pretty much every day, Ron has been scoring a couple of goodsized fish. He reckons it’s one of the most consistent tailor seasons he has seen.

Goldie’s tailor was also caught on mullet, which has been a very handy bait lately.

If you’re after some fresh mullet for live-bait, try cast-netting a few between Spinnaker Sound Marina and the bridge.

Another good spot for cast-netting mullet has been Ningi Creek.

Another place to find the tailor has been Ningi Creek, where Charlie has been successfully fishing on the runout tide for tailor and flathead. Toby, and his mate Daniel, were up between Ningi Creek and the Avon shipwreck, when they brought in a couple of good tailor, which were caught on herring and mullet.

Plenty of bream have been spending a bit of time up around the wreck as well. Geoff and Tyler found them there, drifting past the wreck on the falling tide, using chicken gut.

This winter has been a hit-and-miss season for snapper. Out at Cook’s Rocks, there has been a lot of fluctuation in snapper numbers and sizes. Other favourite spots, especially the Ripples, just outside Pacific Harbour, have

not been as exciting for snapper as in previous years, but snapper are still showing there, and at the bridge.

Tommy’s snapper, well above 40cm, was picked up at the bridge, using herring for bait.

Winter whiting has been a pretty good bet this winter, especially on the rising tide in the Passage and on the beaches. A couple of weeks ago, they slowed down on the beach but are still going well up the middle. Among the tailor and whiting, have been good schools of dart, lots of them above 30-50cm in size, which should make very decent fillets.

Fishing at the bridge has quietened a bit over the past week, with garfish and toadies taking a lot of the bait. With the strong tidal flows over last weekend’s new moon, the only time to get anything has been over the change of tide. Cast into the eddies that form at the pylons; live bait and soft plastics have been working there.

Probably the stars of the Pumicestone Passage have been the ever-reliable flathead. The cool weather has brought the big females into the Passage and creeks for breeding and plenty of nicesized male fish with them.

Luke says there are flathead galore at low-tide in Ningi. Sophie caught flathead at Turner’s Camp, on the falling tide.

Jack recommends trying the banks between Spinnaker Sound Marina for flathead, using lures on a rising tide.

Charlie is using soft-plastics (Z-man) in the creeks, to catch lots of biggies. So, from that, you’d have to conclude that flathead really are everywhere, all of the time!

New fishery working group for Moreton Bay takes shape The Palaszczuk Government has announced the appointment of the new Moreton Bay Working Group under the landmark Sustainable Fisheries Strategy.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner welcomed the appointed members who will provide advice to the government and work to ensure Moreton Bay remains a world-class fishery.

“The working group’s priority will be to advise on fishing rules specific to Moreton Bay as part of a regional management trial,” Minister Furner said.

Sustainable Fisheries Strategy 2017-27.”

Mr Furner said members of the Moreton Bay Working Group were selected during an expression of interest process and will play a key role in representing the views and aspirations of all stakeholders.

“Membership of the new working group reflects the broad range of stakeholders with an interest in the fishery including the commercial fishing industry, recreational sector, scientific, conservation organisations and the Traditional Owners of Moreton Bay,” he said.

Membership of the Moreton Bay Working Group is: • Norm Good (science) • Jason Thomson, Greg Savige, Michael Wood, Matthew Vujica, Mark Kleinschmidt (commercial fishing) • Dr Barry Pollock, Judy Lynne, Martin Cowling, Mark Templeton (recreational fishing) • Mathew Hubbard (charter fishing) • Cameron Costello, Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (Traditional Owner) • Dr Paul Maxwell, Healthy Land and Water (conservation) Mr Furner said the new Moreton Bay Working Group would meet for the first time in September.

“Being a member of a working group is just one way to be involved in Queensland’s fisheries management reform process,” he said.

People interested in the management of Moreton Bay will have an opportunity to provide their views on any proposed changes that the working group identifies.

A Gold Coast bait supplier who moved raw prawns outside the movement restriction area and sold them to a bait shop in the Warwick region, has been fined $10,000 in the Brisbane Magistrate Court.

The Magistrate said the penalty should send a clear message to other industry operators and the public warning them that they will be punished if they breach a Movement Control Order.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the prawns were collected from the retail outlet by a government employee and sent to the Biosecurity Sciences Laboratory for testing and Australian Animal Health Laboratory for further confirmation.

“Once the bait prawns tested positive for white spot syndrome virus all at-risk prawns associated with the consignment were immediately traced and removed from sale,” Mr Furner said.

“We also conducted surveillance in local rivers and dams in the area with all tests returning negative results.

“It is very lucky that the consignment was detected quickly, and the bait recalled, otherwise someone could have unknowingly spread white spot disease to new waterways in the area.

“Commercial bait suppliers operating in the white spot disease restricted area should take heed from this and realise it is a criminal offence to move raw prawns, yabbies and marine worms out of the area.

The defendant pleaded guilty to charges of failing to comply with a movement control order, which was made under the Biosecurity Act 2014.

Movement restrictions are in place to safeguard the aquaculture industry, commercial fishers and the environment from further spread of white spot disease.

The restrictions are in place from Caloundra to the New South Wales border, and west to Ipswich for prawns, yabbies and marine worms.

Anyone who suspects white spot disease should contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.

On Saturday, 25th August (last Saturday) the Australian cross-country championships were held at the Melany Golf Club, commencing at 9 a.m. with the boys under-11s and finishing with the last race at 3.05pm with the women’s under-20 six-kilometre race.

Athletes from all over Australia were competing including Jessica Mayne, from Victoria. Jesse was staying at Ningi, with family and training at the Bribie AFL ground prior to the competition as there was no prior chance to make use of, or even get acquainted with the Melany track before the race because it is a fully functional golf course. Jesse says she was really looking forward to competing because she has been injury prone for over 12 months with an achilleas problem, but now is raring to go, injury free. Jesse was the Victorian all-schools

under-18, 3000 metre champion before getting injured and this will only be her fourth competition race since her recovery.

The open men’s and women’s races were held between 12.20 and 1.45 p.m. over 10 kilometres.

On the day of the championships it was sunny but very cool, it was ideal for the event. The under-20 women’s race had the world champion running, Ella

Heeney, she also won the race. There were also other international runners taking part, but most of the local girls ran very well.

Jesse Mayne came a credible seventh and was closing in on sixth just before the finish line. Queenslander, Brielle Erbacher, came second. Ella Heeney said it was the toughest course she had ran on. Jesse’s team, Victoria, won the team event, for most points, gold medal out of all the states.

Next month Jesse continues her comeback on the Gold Coast in the Australian University championships.

Sporting clubs kicking goals on Bribie Moreton Bay Regional Council has granted a pair of community leases that is set to help shape the future of the Bribie Island Croquet Club Inc. and the Bribie Island Soccer Football Club Inc. Spokesperson for Parks, Recreation and Sport Councillor Koliana Winchester who made the announcement following council’s coordination meeting on Tuesday 21 August said council would grant community leases to both clubs to construct a half croquet court and a storage shed at Banksia Beach and Bongaree respectively.

“This is a another opportunity to deliver much-needed community space that encourages local residents to stay healthy and active,” Cr Winchester said .

Councillor for Division 1 Brooke Savige said council’s community leasing program offered low-cost opportunities for over 250 community groups across the region to manage and utilise council’s facilities.

One minute the Minister says $3 million is committed to this project and the next it’s $2 million before he reverted back to saying $3 million then $2 million during the recent Estimates Hearing. The truth is that the Labor Government has slashed $1 million from the initial funding of $3 million for this vital planning project and for reasons known only to themselves, they have decided to push back the completion date of the planning work from 2018/2019 to 2019/2020.

With the recent $20 million funding boost by the Federal Government for Bribie Island Road, there can be no more excuses as to why planning works and dangerous pinch points on the road now can’t be fast-tracked. As your State Representative I will continue to fight the neglect of our only artery that services the entire community from the Bruce Highway to Bribie Island. HELPING OUR FARMERS

I was very pleased to offer the Electorate Office as a drop off point for Drought Angels, a well-known and respected charity within the rural sector giving a helping hand to our farmers in times of need. I was also thrilled to donate $300 to the charity so that money can be spent locally to keep their It was a real pleasure to attend the President’s Reception and meet this year’s economies strong.
