Gifts to the Inspiration Fund bring visiting artists to Educate and Inspire Over the past few weeks, ISKL has hosted various artists who have shared their skills, stories and passion with our students from all three divisions. Composer, conductor and musician, Dr. Andrea Ramsey, recently led a Choral Exchange and Festival with our choir students and a visiting choir from the American International School of Guangzhou. Including workshops and hands-on learning, the festival concluded on January 20 with a final concert featuring singers from our entire ISKL community.

Our musicians have also been working with Scott Hickey, a world class composer and arranger, who has been commissioned to create a piece of music in collaboration with our students, which will debut at the opening of our new campus later this year. And, to make sure the new campus feels like home from day one, ISKL alumnus and visiting visual artist Haffendi Anuar has been working with Melawati students to create an art display for the new school.

Moving to the theatre, Mary-Frances Doherty, internationally acclaimed actress and theatre maker, was full of wonderful and inspiring ideas on how to create in the theatre and passed these skills onto our MS students, who, like sponges, soaked up all she had to offer. “Both students and teachers gained an incredible amount of knowledge from her residency and we all feel very privileged to have worked alongside MaryFrances. A huge thanks to the Inspiration Fund for supporting all of our recent artists in residence. It’s so fantastic to be part of a community that supports the arts and gives our students these opportunities.” - MS Drama Teacher Julia van Beek

Student Agency: Nurturing Purpose and Passion in ISKL’s Middle School Student Agency refers to the level of choice, autonomy, and control a student experiences in an educational situation. For example, learning opportunities that are driven by student interests and are relevant to life experiences - and that’s what the Middle School showcased in its recent Student Agency initiative. “The goal was to encourage our students to go through the process of blending their skills and motivation to meet a specific need in their life or the lives of others.” - MS Assistant Principal, Doug Woodward To make that happen, teachers took students through five different phases over 11 hours of instruction time. MS students embarked on projects varying from an original dance routine, to building computers and mobile apps from scratch, to organizing a community partnership with a local refugee school - just to name a few. “The whole project was really fun and different, my favorite part was the activity day where we got to get to know the other kids and make connections with them. We learned a lot from them and I think they learned a lot from us too.” - Pauline De Vos, a Grade 8 student who worked with a local refugee school.

Directed by the student-led Earth Council, ISKL’s green practices emphasize environmentally sustainable concepts, community service, and global citizenship. “It was great to be a part of the process and to receive this designation for the ISKL community. It was a lot of work to complete the applications and reviews, but it was worth it in the end to help showcase all the sustainable efforts taking place on our campuses.” - Earth Council Co-President and Grade 12 student, Frida Haettmark Eco-Schools is an international program of environmental and sustainable development education for schools.
