Occasions Of The Month

Srila Narottama Das Thakur The birth of a Narottama Das Thakur was preplanned. Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu knew that a great devotee soul would soon take birth after he had completed his pastimes. So, Mahaprabhu decided to leave a gift of Krishna prem for Narrottama Das Thakur in Padmavati river. Finally, the day arrived when Narottama Das Thakur was born as a prince in the kingdom of Kheturi gram. During his birth, the Astrologers were glorifying him profusely. The only catch was they warned his parents

Krishnananda Datta and Narayani Devi not to let the boy listen to any saints in alone and not to let him go near the river Padmavati, because if it happens then he will become a sanyasi. However, his parents would invite many sadhus and saints to their home for their son's satisfaction. Once a saint came and he described Srila Raghunath das Goswami. He described he lives in Vrindavan and has great love for Gauranga Mahaprabhu and though he was from a rich family, he left home and met Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Puri. After hearing about Raghunath das Goswami, Narottama das Thakur was quite inspired & would try to follow him. His attraction towards Krishna conscious was increasing day by day. By seeing this his parents became very fearful. One day, Narottama das was taking rest and Lord Nityananda came in his dream and told him to go to Padmavati river and take bath. But Narottama told him that he was not allowed to go near the river as there could be some danger also. Lord Nityananda replied that there is no danger instead Lord Chaitanya has kept a gift for him. He also informed Narottama that he had made the soldiers unconscious and the way was clear for him to go. So, he found his way to the river and took bath. As he entered the water his body colour changed to golden and Krishna Prema entered into him. He started crying the names of the lord. After this he went to Vrindavan, he met Jiva Goswami and Raghunath das Goswami and took initiation from Lokanath Goswami. He has written many bhajans and books.

Govardhan Puja

Every year Nanda Maharaj conducted a ceremony for thanking Lord Indra for sending clouds to pour down enough rain to the land of braj. While the preparation was going on, Krishna and Balrama watched the men preparing for the grand ceremony. Krishna asked his father," what is this all about?" Nanda Maharaj explained that to show our gratitude to Lord Indra for sending the rain we do a yajna every year. Krishna didn't agree to it. He desired that the villagers worship Mount Govardhan for the reason that Mount Govardhan is the one that provides natural resources to the villagers for their livelihood. Trees provided oxygen, the grass provided food for the cattle and provided natural beauty. Upon listening to Krishna, Nanda Maharaj agreed to his proposal. So the people of braj stopped the sacrifice for Lord Indra. Indra got angry at this and ordered samvartaka cloud to cover everything with the rain. There were torrential rains for 7 days in the land of braja. So little Krishna lifted the Govardhan hill on his little finger and protected all the people and cattle of braja. After 7–8 days of continuous storms, seeing the people of Gokul being unaffected, Indra accepted defeat and stopped the storms. This day is therefore celebrated as a festival that paid respect to Govardhan hill by preparing a 'giriyajna' - a "great offering of foods and delicacies to the sacred mountain". Everyone in Vrindavan decorated their cows and fed them nicely and kept delicious food in front of the Govardhan hill and went around the hill to take its blessings. Gopis dressed up nicely and chanted mantras while the Brahmanas gave blessings to the cowherd men. Krishna then assumed the form of a mountain himself and accepted all the offerings. Ever since that day the first day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month is celebrated as Govardhan puja.

Learnings from Tales God And Man There was once a man, who climbed up a hill to have a word with God. As he reached the top of the hill, he called out to God with all his heart. Krishna always listens to those who call out to Him with their purest heart. He came in front of this man and asked him what was the issue he was facing. The man said, “God, I want to ask you some questions.” Krishna, the supreme personality of Godhead sensed there was something up this man’s sleeve. He told this man to ask his questions. The man asked, “God, what are a million years for you?” The Lord said, “A minute.” “God, what are a million dollars for you?” “A penny.” “God, can I have a penny please?” “Sure! In a minute.”

Vedic Heroes INDRA-THE KING OF THE DEMIGODS Indradeva, the King of the demigods is full of many qualities. Even though he made a terrible mistake by not paying obeisances to his Guru, Brihaspati Muni, he realized his mistake and immediately went to apologize. But alas! his guru was nowhere to be seen. He suddenly felt very humble and saddened and felt very depressed. Taking advantage of the situation, the demons attacked. Being already mentally depressed, Indra lost the battle. It was something which happened very seldom, as the demigods always won the battles against demons. It shows another quality of Indra that he was powerful and a brave king. Then the demigods went to Lord Brahma for advice. Lord Brahma was their guide and mentor and they always approached him whenever they were in a problem and followed his instructions and guidance. When they approached Lord Brahma they poured out the whole story. Lord Brahma listened to them and told them it was all their fault. Why had they offended their guru? It had all started from that point that they had suffered such a loss. It showed yet another quality of Indra and the demigods. It showed that they listened patiently to Lord Brahma. One may get annoyed and angry when someone else is criticizing them, but they knew that Lord Brahma was right. So they heard him patiently. Lord Brahma further advised them to approach Visvarupa, the son of Tvasta, and make him their guru. Demigods obediently followed his instructions. It shows that the demigods and their King were obedient and followed the instruction as it is. We should all try to get these qualities in ourselves like King Indra and the demigods.

Many Moons Sripad Aindra Prabhu Sripad Aindra Prabhu is a disciple of Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. He re-started the 24hour sankirtan at ISKCON Krishna Balaram Mandir, Vrindavan in 1986. Aindra Prabhu was born at Arlington Hospital in the USA on March 12, 1953. Prior to becoming a Hare Krishna devotee, his name was Edward Striker. He was born in a family of musicians, artists and himself was a guitarist as well as played other instruments. He had a huge interest in painting and as well as music, and it reflects in the way how he has decorated the entire 2nd floor of Gurukula Building (Brahmachari Ashram) as well as his room (at Krishna Balarama Mandir in Vrindavan), which is something which looks very unique and different to any new-comer. It carries a very out-of-the-world, deep and spiritual vibe. While doing concerts in his late teens, he had encountered the Hare Krishna devotees and got Beyond Birth and Death book written by Srila Prabhupada (which he didn't read much then). Then after a few years, as he states, his wife from four years gave him the Sri Isopanishad Book written by Srila Prabhupada. Aindra Prabhu got so deeply involved with the book that he renounced immediately, went to the temple, and joined there full-time and gradually was initiated by Srila Prabhupada He was initiated by Srila Prabhupada in 1973 at the age of 20 years as Aindra Dasa. He was a pujari for a long time and used to do book distribution and Harinam Sankirtan on the streets of New York for about 8 years. He would go out on streets in New York and do Hare Krishna Mahamantra sankirtan for 8-12 hours on a daily basis. This was for a period of about 8 years between 1973 to 1981-82. Aindra Prabhu

came in 1986 in Vrindavan and started the 24-hour kirtan single handedly by the mercy of Sri Vrindavan Dham and Prabhupada. Having almost no support, he wore a payal (anklet) to give the effect of kartal (cymbals), played his harmonium and sang his heart out for 16-18 hours on a daily basis before more devotees got inspired and assisted him. In initial days, there was no mridanga player so Aindra Prabhu would ask any vrajvasi baba visiting mandir for taking darshan of Radha Shyamsundar to play mridanga with him. The baba would be like, "but I don't know hot to play it." Aindra Prabhu would say, "Just beat it anyway you like or do dum dum dum." That's how the 24 hour kirtan restarted.!!!

Perfect Question, Perfect Answer Frequently Asked Questions Question - Are all beings Spirit Soul? What about plants, animals, insects etc. Answer:If there is life, it is the symptom of the presence of a soul. When a soul is present, all living things undergo six changes: they are born, they grow, they endure for a while, they produce offspring, they dwindle and then they die. These six stages can be seen in plants, animals, insects and even microbes although the duration of each stage will differ. If these six stages are present it means there is the presence of a soul which is the cause of these changes. Once the soul leaves, the organism dies.

Videos to refer:1. Proof for existence of soul. 2. Do animals have soul?
