I'm not completely sure as to how to start this, because music is involved in some of my very first memories. My humble beginnings go back to beating on pots and pans as a child. However, my first public performance came when I was living in Kentucky . We had two services at our church and this particular second service the guy who played the drums was a no show, so the service started and there wasn't anyone in place to play the drums...I felt compelled to give it a try, so I got up and just started playing...at first I struggled, but quickly got the hang of it. The very next Sunday evening service the same thing happened, but I was prepared this time and took my place on the drums and have been rocking every since... Now I'm playing drums at church (at the ripe age of 4 or 5, I think) on a regular basis, so now its time to move back to Richmond , Va. During my father's time in the service we moved around a few times. We lived in Germany , Kansas , Kentucky , and Connecticut . So now its time to go back home, my father found the Lord in Germany at a Church of God in Christ, so coming back to Richmond meant finding another COGIC church to attend, (because you can't join in, you got to be born again, lol). So once we found one (Deliverance Temple, Church Of God In Christ, on 25th and Marshall) they soon found out that I played drums, they had someone already in place playing the drums, but the church seemed to favor me over him, so I ended up playing more and more, until the family of the other guy got upset and left the church (go figure). I then became the sole drummer. At this time I was growing up and was entering elementary school. So when I began to show an interest in joining the band my mom gave the best advice that I ever could have ever received, she said, "You already have the drums down, it may be time to learn something different.'' As you know it wasn't a request, so I chose the trumpet...I don't really know why, maybe because it only had 3 valves...but I soon excelled at that as well. I became the top trumpet player for the whole city of Richmond in my final year of elementary school. By the time I made it into high school I joined the marching band, from there attended summer band, and by the end of summer band camp I became the trumpet captain. I beat out a senior for the position. Sophomore year I became the captain over all instruments. Then my last two years I was appointed the position of the head drum major. Around this time I learned how to play and teach all instruments. All the band director had to do was introduce the music to the band and I would finish teaching it. When it came to the auxiliary band (flags, dance girls, majorettes, etc.), I taught them as well. The band director would give me the field show and I taught the entire band from start to finish, and in addition came up with the dance portion of the show. I covered all the solo performances for the shows and was the quintessential performer. I was known city wide for my performance style. I played in the concert band, jazz band, and also acted in the schools' first play in 35 years as the lead. I found my creative flow in high school, and in my senior year I started dabbling with playing the piano. My mom gave me a piano one Christmas and I would sit in my room with tapes from James Hall and Hezekiah Walker and would play until it started to make since... I'm currently working with my choir, The Children Of Israel. We are busy releasing our first project entitled, "I Won't Give Up". Our performances include, "The Transformation Expo", "Stone Soul", and "Spirit Bowl" for 104.7, a well known Urban Christian FM station here in the tricities.
I've had many different musical experiences up until now in my lifetime... I've traveled within the states as well as abroad. One of the greatest moments thus far was having the chance to travel to Nairobi , Kenya , on a missionary trip. Being allowed to minister to God's people way across the water, what a blessing! After that experience I came into the full realization of my calling: I was born for music; it was created for me; for I am music and it is me Dovane Jefferson. -
Who are “The Children Of Israel”?
I’m glad you asked. We are The Children of Israel. COI is a group of young adults who have a deep yearning and calling to minister the gospel to whomever is willing to receive it. COI delivers the message through a fusion of Gospel styles which include: traditional, contemporary, hip-hop, go-go, and neo-soul. We have a very eclectic style. Our aim is to minister to the whole body of Christ as well as the entire world. COI began in 1998 under a different title, Dynamos Praise. From there we felt an urging to change the name again in 2000 to Direct Praise, and after a brief break and time spent working with other artists God revealed that the work was not done and that He had plans for us...the music needed to be revamped and the name had to be changed yet again. And that's when He gave us our new name, “The Children Of Israel”, it simply means different tribes (people) coming together to do the work of the ministry. We combine our collective talents and gifts for the masters use. COI has ministered in several different venues, which include: “THE TRANSFORMATION EXPO” , “THE STONE SOUL FAMILY PICNIC” , “THE SPIRIT BOWL” , and the “The State Fair Gospel Showcase” all sponsored by 104.7 FM, “Celebration Of Music” sponsored by 1590 AM, and a host of other engagements. We are currently in the midst of travel preparations to support the release of our first CD. The word of God has summed up our mission as follows: II Chronicles 5:11-14 11 And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place: (for all the priests that were present were sanctified, and did not then wait by course: 12 Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets:) 13 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth forever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD; 14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God. We diligently strive to live up to what God has called and anointed us to fulfill.

Q: Tell me about the Group A: The Children of Israel is made up of a group eclectic, music loving believers whose main purpose is to minister God's Word in song. We are after excellence in everything we do. We aim to instill joy in the Lord and to let the world know that through it all, God is still in control. Q: The inspiration of the Children of Israel A: This ministry was birthed out of Gods giving. He has something to say through us and first gave us the music. Next, He took us to the proving ground. Lastly God gave the provision. Q: Talk about the musical style and variations of the Group A. Our Sound comes from a place where life and music meet. Is a mixing bowl of sounds from the street, church, popular music, old music and jazz fused into one. Dovane's Bio Dovane Jefferson was born in Richmond, VA to Pamela Jefferson (then Walker) on September 17, 1973. From an early age, music was in fused into his bones even while playing with the pots and pans on his mother’s floor. The early years were the building blocks for what we see today. A multitalented musician, song writer, producer and a student of his craft, there is not much that he can’t do. Dovane owes all of his gifts to God and uses them to further the gospel and to uplift the body of Christ.
