When I was doing research about the small urban office, I came up with three important ideas. First, how to make the limited space larger. Second, how to make the space feel more comfortable in a busy city. Third, how to make the interior space more functional.

COMMERCIAL DESIGN

AREA SEPARATED

GLASSES

WOOD BEAM

HIGH CEILING

After defining the most important things, below are the pictures that inspire me to consider about what the interior space should look like. I decide to focus on natural elements, earth tone colors, and glass materials.

01-1 PLAN

What's in an Design Office? Lab(Printing) room, working station, personal office, conference room and break area.

CONFERENCE ROOM KITCH REST

Earth Tone Color and Natural Elements

In my opinion, people who work in a busy city seldom have time to enjoy nature. Creating an environmental friendly space by using natural colors and elements would help people who work in the office feel relaxed and comfortable.

Glass Material

We cannot change the size of the space, but we can make the space “seems larger. Glass materials provide transparency. They provide multiple layers of the view in the interior space and make people feel spacious.

Hidden Storage Space

Storage is really important within limited space. This design will create several hidden storages in the interior space to help the employees organize their work and supplies efficiently.

HEN & T AREA

Office is located in New York City. The company has about 4-5 employees. The office space is 1000 Sq. Ft. with share restroom and other business in the building.

KITCHEN & REST AREA PERSONAL OFFICE WORKING STATION

L L A W S S A GL

After the brief understanding about the information, I decided to separate the 25’x40’ space into 6 different sections which are mentioned below. Every section has different level of the height to create a clearly wide view. The height of the level could also help developing the area.

01-2 3-D VOLUME STUDY T he O nly T wo B locking Areas:

The main focus in this floor plan is creating a non-blocking environment for the employees. The only two blocked places are the conference room and the personal office because those two places need more privacy. To solve the blocking problem, using glasses walls can provide the feeling of non-blocking.

Why Using Green Carpet Tile And Wood Beam:

The green carpet tile represent grass ground while the wood beam on the outside of the rooms represent trees. In the bustling New York City, people always have a hard time to be in the nature. “Grass” and ”Tree” could create an outdoor feeling to the people who work in the office.

W h y I s n ’ t W a l k way “Grass”:

First, the walk way is utilized to separate the working station and the break area. Second, the concrete walkway is the representation of the park trail. Therefore, every time they go back to the working area, they will imagine walking at the trail.

Wood Beam Partition:

The Purpose of the partition is giving the LAB area more privacy. Also using wood beam creates a non-blocking transparent eiw.

Working Station:

Working station and LAB area are grouping on one side because urban office requires a lot of group works and conversations. Employees could easily communicate if they are located on the same side.

PERSPECTIVE

01-5 OVERVIEW

___07

The main goal of this design is creating a comfortable and functional space

In my opinion, design related jobs require a lot of team work and computer w elements such as tree, grass and wood to create a feeling of working in the under a lot of pressure.

Storage space defines whether the space is functional or not especially in th the ceiling height to make it more functional. I separate the area by different hidden drawers and cabinets would create more space for the interior.

for both employees and clients.

work. I believe the job sometimes would be stressful. To solve this problem, I used a lot of natural nature. Hopefully it could help people who work in the office feel more relaxed when they are

his project. 1000 Sq. Ft. is a very small space for an office; therefore, I tried to take advantage of t height of the floor, and then create some drawers between two different height of the floor. These

02 MIDSTATE ONSEN Concept:

The main purpose of the Midstate Onsen is using the fantastic hot spring resource in Oregon to give a wonderful Asian style hot spring experience to the customers. Midstate Onsen combine the Asian culture and western culture to create the cross-culture hot spring resort. The public hot spring pools and the private hot spring pool in the guest room offer customers different options.

Rainbow, Oregon

Rainbow is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States. It lies off Oregon Route 126, northeast of Eugene. Rainbow's elevation is 1,211 feet (369 m). A post office was established on July 1, 1924, and closed August 31, 1937. The post office got its name from the rainbow trout that swim in the McKenzie River. ___08

04 GREEN HOUSE CENTER Project mission and goals: • Providing free barrier environment, like minimizing the chance to have dead end hallway. Every signage needs to be very clear, and seniors will see them easily from their perspectives. • A calm space environment where can provide sufficient daylighting and artificial lighting, since seniors normally have impaired vision, which means they need more light source to see things. • Developing a comprehensive understandings of seniors’ sensory system in order to design and implement actual methods to assist them, and making them become more engaged within Greenhouse Center.

Location Analysis:

Portland, Oregon’s the most famous city, with a high population in Portland, a senior healthcare center is needed for those elders. We picked a location sits alongside with Columbia and Willamette rivers. The location is quiet and far from city center, also surrounding by green plants. ___15

04-3 PERSPECTIVE

Overall:

The focus on this Greenhouse Center is the natural feeling. In the interior space, we create the hallway like by using the road lamp, concrete section tile, and wooden like tile to create a very natural look of the interior space. Also having some green plants gives more growing feeling to the interior space. Greenhouse Center design is the group project that I finished with another classmate. We first started the interview with the people who live in the similar property. After we understood the property, we started to think about what was important to them and what improvement we could do in the new building. I mainly focused on the space planning, modeling, and the presentation. The other classmate who worked with me focused on the detail drawing and the interview.
