We’re Here to Help The Financial Aid Office at Indian River State College is staffed with knowledgeable advisors who assist students in applying for needs-based grants, Federal Direct Student Loans and scholarships. Workshops designed to help students and parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are held regularly on IRSC campuses. A host of financial aid resources from printed materials to Financial Aid TV—accessible through the IRSC website and available 24/7—are readily available to students and parents. Financial aid advisors can be reached during regular business hours:

• St. Lucie County: 772-462-7450

• Indian River, Martin and Okeechobee counties: 1-866-900-FAID (3243)

More than $40 million in financial aid is awarded to IRSC students annually in the form of grants, loans and scholarships.

Grants Grants are a form of financial aid that do not need to be repaid. Grants are typically needsbased and funded through Federal, State and/or College sources. Some grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis; therefore it is to your advantage to apply early. The following grants may be available to eligible IRSC students:

• Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

• IRSC Financial Need Grant

• First Generation Matching Grant Program

• Florida Student Assistant Grant (FSAG)

• Pell Grant

• Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant

Loans Federal and state governments, as well as private organizations, can provide college loans to students and parents. The loans listed below allow you to defer repaying any money until you’re out of college, although interest may accrue.

• Federal Direct Student Loans

• Subsidized Loans

• Unsubsidized and PLUS Loans

20

Students must enroll at IRSC full time in order to receive the maximum award amounts. Full time is defined as at least 12 semester hours for all terms. Certain award programs, such as Pell Grants, may pro-rate awards to correspond to a student’s enrollment status (i.e., half-time students receive half of the full-time award.) Students must be enrolled at least half time (6 credits or 180 clock hours) to receive a student loan. Awards are made to students who meet eligibility requirements with a valid FAFSA on file at IRSC. Some grants may require additional information or separate applications.

Veterans Education Benefits The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs administers a variety of educational benefit programs. Many veterans and active duty personnel can qualify for more than one program, and there also are programs for qualified dependents. For program information and to begin an application, visit https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/apply.asp.

Campus Resources

Health Services The IRSC Health and Wellness Center is focused on providing a comprehensive approach to good health and well-being. The Center offers personal wellness classes, computerized nutritional analysis and lifestyle assessments, and a health resource library featuring books, pamphlets, audio tapes and videos on topics such as common illnesses, as well as an electronic database describing medical procedures and medications. A registered nurse is available during posted health services hours. The College nurse can provide treatment for minor illnesses and injuries; emergency care; individual counseling; health information; and referrals.

WQCS 88.9 FM Radio WQCS 88.9 FM is licensed to Indian River State College. At 100,000 watts, the station serves a listening area from northern Palm Beach County to Melbourne. The news and classical music station is a member of National Public Radio and Florida Public Broadcasting Service and is affiliated with Public Radio International, American Public Media and the Associated Press. In case of emergency, students and their families are asked to monitor the www.IRSC.edu home page, WQCS 88.9 FM and social media (#IRSCalert).

IRSC Child Development Center IRSC has a full-service center for early childhood education located at its Main Campus in Fort Pierce. The Center is open to students, staff and community families looking for a quality experience for their children three months through four years of age. The IRSC Child Development Center is a site for the Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten Education (VPK) program. For more information, contact the Center for Early Childhood Education at 772-462-7645.

Cosmetology/Barbering Students and graduates receive a 20% discount on cosmetology, barbering, and nail and skin care services offered by students studying on Main Campus in Fort Pierce (2401 South 29th Street) and at the Stuart Square Plaza in Stuart (1998 S.E. Federal Highway).

River Shop Bookstore The well-stocked River Shop bookstores, located on the Main Campus and on branch campuses, sell new and used textbooks, classroom supplies, gifts, IRSC apparel and merchandise. The shops often offer “Back-to-School” promotions, such as “Midnight Madness” and other events. As part of a continuing effort to keep the cost of education at Indian River State College to a minimum, “Book BuyBacks” are offered at all campuses each spring and fall. Books accepted for resale must be in good condition, and they must be designated for use in upcoming classes at IRSC. 42
