AREA ATTRACTIONS

Perhaps our most famous miner can be found in an 81’ tall tribute to the men who built the Mesabi Iron Range. The 26-foot-tall Iron Ore Miner Statue stands atop a structure representing the “emergence of man through steel.” Based on an 1880s miner, Iron Man was dedicated in 1987 to the Mesabi, Vermilion, Cuyuna and Gogebic iron ranges. His looming presence makes for a great photo-op! Iron selfie STOP Man is located on Highway 169 in Chisholm. Parking is available.

BIG ADVENTURES  Hull-Rust Mahoning Mineview, Hibbing Hibbing was founded in 1893. Nearly 30 years later, miners discovered the richest deposits of iron ore right beneath the town. To be able to mine it, the entire town—buildings and all—moved south to the city’s present location. In the ensuing years, visitors and locals have enjoyed watching mining operations from the historic Hull-Rust Mahoning Mineview located near what remains of North Hibbing. In 2017, history repeated itself and the Mineview had to move south to allow for further mining operations. Re-opened in 2019, the Hull-Rust Mahoning Mineview is bigger and better than ever. Enjoy sweeping views of the City of Hibbing and catch a glimpse two-story haul trucks, super-sized electric shovels, and more mining operations at Hibbing Taconite. The mining pit is an expansive eight-point-one miles long and three miles wide and is one of the world’s largest open pit mines. Kids enjoy climbing on mining equipment in the park area, as well as shopping in the gift store located in the visitors’ center. Friendly volunteers answer questions and point out what’s happening across the mine. Open daily mid-May through September. It’s a must-see when you’re on the Mesabi Iron Range. Honk the Moose: Biwabik

Hibbing Historical Society: Hibbing

The classic children’s tale, “Honk the Moose,” was based on a real-life story about a moose who came to a small northern Minnesota town, and the boys who befriended him. Now a statue in the heart of Biwabik, “Honk” welcomes photos year-round. Find him in the Biwabik City Park and pick up the book from your favorite bookseller, or on Amazon.

The city of Hibbing is knowns as “the town that moved.” Why? Because the city’s founders discovered rich iron ore deposits directly under the city’s center. Discover exactly how Hibbing earned its reputation with a first-hand look at exhibits that highlight Hibbing throughout the years, including an “old Hibbing” display. selfie STOP

 Hibbing High School Hibbing High School: Hibbing You’ll never find another high school like Hibbing High School. BRINGIN’ IT ALL BACK HOME Around here, you’ll find mining trucks with big boxes, but not very many big box stores. Instead, you’ll find plenty of indie shops that carry a variety of carefully-curated wares. Bring home some genuine Iron Range souvenirs! Stop by Casey Drug in Chisholm for fun stickers, unique gifts and natural products. Find women’s clothing boutiques

like moxie or Amazing Grace, and something for the guys at Benders. And for unique housewares, you must stop at the Silver Birch Gift Shop in Hibbing. Top off your day of shopping with a sweet treat from Canelakes Candy in downtown Virginia. Souvenir stops like Iron Range Apparel, First Stage Gallery, Jon’s Drug, Kunnari’s

Farm Market, and Pine Grove Gallery, are just a few more shopping spots to check out. Need a fix or new gear? The experts at Mesabi Recreation, Bikes on Howard and Range Sports can supply you with on-site repair, gear and more. Explore all of our retail outlets online!
