“WHERE GREAT SERVICE HAS NO BOUNDARIES”
of the Iron County Museum. On Sunday, Aug. 11, the museum will host this special event from noon to 4 p.m. The festivities will begin at noon with plate lunches featuring cold porketta sandwiches for sale as a special treat. The musical entertainment will begin at 1 p.m. with a wide range of songs played by Dennis, Dutch, and Bruno. Retired, Dennis is from Green Bay where he plays the accordion full time as he travels around the area. A native of Amasa originally, he happens to be in our area right now, visiting his mother who lives there. Visitors are certain to enjoy his talent and personality. Dutch plays the saxophone and clarinet. His delightful voice adds pleasure to many numbers. A resident of Iron Mountain, he spends his winters in Arizona. Bruno, a resident of Alpha, started his musical career in high school and continues
to enjoy playing the drums whenever he has an opportunity. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to view special displays relating to Italian Heritage. In Heritage Hall there is an exhibit about the Balducci Supper Club and a mural about Italian heritage on one of the beams; in the
Mining Memorial Hall recognition of Italian miners is given in notebooks and on the Memorial; and in the Peterson Hall there is a display about the Rum Rebellion. Outside buildings include Toti Tavern and the Giovanelli Art Gallery House. Later in the afternoon, there will be
some goodies available baked by the great local “Donas.” Sponsored by MCACA and CCCAC, admission to this special event is $6 for adults and $3 for children. Volunteering to coordinate the 2013 Italian Heritage Day celebration are Carol Dallavalle, Audrey Ridolphi, and Carol Vezzetti.

Grilling dos and don’ts Grilling season is in full swing for many. For others, it never ended at all. Some people equate grilling to an art form and profess to be ultimate grill masters. Whether you consider grilling to be a full-fledged sporting activity or just have a fancy for foods cooked over an open flame, you can benefit from information regarding dos and don’ts related to preparing and grilling foods. DO clean out the ash catcher beneath charcoal before lighting to allow proper air circulation from bottom vents. DON’T start the grill for the first time of the season without doing a thorough safety inspec-
tion. If using a gas grill, check for holes or leaks in gas hoses. DO preheat gas grills for approximately 10 minutes. Charcoal grills should be heated until the coals are 80 percent gray and ashy. DON’T place the grill too close to a house, garage or where any items can be ignited, such as by leaf piles or chemicals. DO keep children and pets away from the grill so that it isn’t bumped into or accidentally knocked over. DON’T use metalhandled utensils on the grill. They can transfer heat to the palm of your hand. Opt for wooden handles or use a flexible, heat-resistant glove.
DO marinate meats to tenderize them. There is also evidence to support that marinades reduce the production of cancercausing substances on meats that are grilled from fat in the meat and built-up drippings in the grill. DON’T press down on burgers or meats while they’re on the grill. This releases juices and could dry out the food. It may also cause flare-ups. DO trim fat from meat before cooking. DON’T use a fork to turn over foods on the grill. Use tongs, which will not pierce the food and release the juices. DO put sweet basting items on the food during the last 10 to 15 minutes
of cooking so they don’t char. DON’T thread foods on wooden skewers and cook without first soaking the skewers in water for 30 minutes. Otherwise the skewers could burn. DO brush the grill with vegetable oil to prevent food from sticking. DON’T leave the grill unattended. Food can flare up and burn quickly. Try to prepare as much of your meal in advance so that you can carefully watch the grill. DO try other meats and foods on the grill such as pork, lamb and fish. DON’T grill indoors or in an enclosed area devoid of proper ventilation.

Residents ride in the Wild West rodeo parade
Iron County Medical Care Facility residents Ellen Johnson, Charles Benjamin, Elroy Radeuchel, Ward Vassar, John Bucek, Oliver Bruce, Diane Nacoli, Orlaine Karnack and Amber Clark had fun on their float during the Wild West Parde in Iron River on July 20. The float represented both young and old with two 102 year old residents and the three year old daughter of one of the staff. The 99 year age difference was seen by parade onlookers. The float and special day was made possible with much thanks to many
volunteer staff including Georgette Cunningham who boasted, “It was absolutely one of the best times I’ve had with the residents. Seeing how much they enjoyed it put a smile on everyone’s faces. It was great!” Along with Cunningham, additional volunteer staff that helped make the day memorable included Donna Luft, Jill Nocerini, Sarah Sliva, Darla Bunno and many helping hands from the maintenance and diversional therapy departments and countless other staff and their families. Cancer is a potentially deadly disease that does not discriminate based on a person’s age, sex, ethnicity, or social status. Though anyone can get cancer, the National Institute on Aging notes that a person’s risk of getting cancer increases with age, even if that person has no family history of cancer. That reality highlights the importance of routine cancer screenings for men and women age 50 and older. While screenings are an important part of detecting and treating cancer, those over 50 should know they can take certain measures to possibly prevent the onset of cancer. For example, including certain foods as part of a regular diet may be effective at preventing cancer. Though there’s no way to guarantee a person won’t get cancer, the follow-

These studies have based their findings on tomato consumption and not on the use of lycopene supplements, which may or may not be effective at preventing cancer. Cooked tomatoes can improve the body’s ability to absorb lycopene, further enhancing its ability to protect the body against cancer. * Fatty fish: including salmon, that is full of omega-3 fatty acids has been linked to a host medical benefits, including lowering a person’s risk of cancer and heart disease.

The splendor of this region is unrivaled so when summer arrives, we can’t wait to get out and enjoy all the area has to offer”. Residents of the Iron County Medical Care Facility have been out and about enjoying local parades, shopping trips, and day trips to camp. Still to be enjoyed are special events like the annual Strawberry Social on July 12, Wild West Days July 17-19 and National Assisted Living Week in September.

That’s because blueberries are rich in antioxidants, which the American Institute for Cancer Research notes can protect cells from being damaged. *Coffee: Though studies about the efficacy of coffee as a potentially preventive agent against cancer are ongoing, some studies have found that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee can lower a person’s risk of developing colon, endometrial and prostate cancer. *Whole grains: can help men and women control their weight, as they are lower in calories than more traditional options. But studies have shown that whole grains, which can be found in whole-grain and

Time flies when you’re having fun enjoying picnics, boat rides, concerts, bonfires and barbeques. For those more relaxing days, tenants at Victorian Heights take pleasure in the rocking chairs on the shaded front porch, visiting over wine, cheese, and jazz music, and watching the blue birds that nest in the back yard or hummingbirds drinking at one of the many feeders.
