CROESO

Andrew Pierce, Festival Patron

Andrew Pierce, Llywydd yr Wˆyl

The Iris Prize continues to be the world’s largest short film prize valued at £25,000 offering a talented filmmaker the chance to make a new short film. Iris’ enthusiasm for supporting new and emerging talent is only matched by the quality of the work we receive, confirming without doubt that Iris represents the best of the best!

Mae Gwobr Iris yn cynnal ei statws fel y wobr fwyaf yn y byd am ffilm fer – mae hi’n werth £25,000 – ac yn parhau i gynnig cyfle unigryw i wneuthurwr ffilm talentog gwblhau ffilm fer newydd. Mae ymrwymiad Iris i gefnogi talent newydd yn cyd-fynd ag ansawdd y gwaith a dderbynnir – ac yn cadarnhau bod Iris yn cynrychioli’r goreuon yn eu maes!

Making sure that Iris lives up to people’s expectations has been our priority over the past 12 months and as we embark on our 5th edition we hope to be making some exciting announcements about the future. Who could have predicted in 2007 that Iris would in such a short space of time become such a key player for LGBT filmmakers? In its May 2011 issue America’s leading gay fashion and lifestyle magazine OUT identified the Iris Prize Festival as one of six unique film festivals in the world telling its readers that Iris is worth flying for and describing Cardiff as Wales’s increasingly cosmopolitan capital. We have a number of new developments in 2011. Stonewall Cymru and Iris have offered 8 young people the opportunity to develop their editorial and filming skills interviewing directors and actors for IrisTV. The London Women’s Clinic have with great enthusiasm sponsored our two new public awards for acting and for those of you who are connected to the web take a look at our brand new website www.irisprize.org which has been created and sponsored by Creo Interactive. I am proud to be part of the Iris family which continues to grow each year. I wish my fellow patrons, sponsors, Friends of Iris and our growing and loyal supporters a fantastic festival.

Ein blaenoriaeth dros y 12 mis diwethaf fu sicrhau bod Iris yn parhau i ateb disgwyliadau pobl ac wrth i ni gynnal yr ŵyl am y 5ed tro, rydym yn gobeithio gallu gwneud ambell gyhoeddiad cyffrous iawn ynglŷn â’r dyfodol. Pwy allai fod wedi rhagweld yn 2007 y byddai Iris, mewn cyfnod byr, yn magu statws a phwysigrwydd allweddol i wneuthurwyr ffilm LGBT? Yn rhifyn Mai 2011 o brif gylchgrawn ffasiwn a bywyd hoyw America, OUT, nodwyd bod Gŵyl Gwobr Iris yn un o chwe gŵyl unigryw yn y byd ac fe anogwyd ei ddarllenwyr i hedfan i ymweld â’r Ŵyl, gan ddisgrifio Caerdydd ymhellach fel “prifddinas cynyddol gosmopolitan Cymru”. Mae gennym nifer o ddatblygiadau newydd ar gyfer Gŵyl 2011. Mae Stonewall Cymru ac Iris yn cynnig cyfle i 8 o bobl ifainc ddatblygu eu sgiliau golygyddol a ffilmio trwy gyf-weld â chyfarwyddwyr ac actorion ar ran IrisTV. Mae Clinig Merched Llundain yn noddi dwy wobr actio newydd, yr enillwyr i’w pennu gan y cyhoedd, ac i’r rheiny ohonoch â chysylltiad gwe, gallwch ymweld â’n gwefan newydd sbon www.irisprize.org, wedi’i greu a’i noddi gan Creo Interactive. Dw i’n falch iawn o fod yn rhan o deulu Iris - sy’n tyfu ac yn tyfu bob blwyddyn. Dymunaf Ŵyl ffantastig i chi i gyd, yn gyd-lywyddion, noddwyr, Cyfeillion Iris a’n cefnogwyr ffyddlon a gwych.

12.30YH, Chapter 1

Spork is a film about standing out and fitting in. Spork is a frizzy-haired, pink-cheeked outcast who tries to navigate her way through the complex world that is Junior High. When a school dance show provides a chance for Spork to confront a mean-girls gang, her trailer-park neighbour steps up to coach her with some booty-poppin moves.

Mae Spork yn ffilm am sefyll allan a ffitio i mewn. Mae Spork yn alltud – mae ganddi wallt ‘frizzy’ a bochau pinc – ac mae hi’n ceisio llywio’i ffordd trwy fyd cymhleth ei hysgol ganol. Mae sioe ddawns yn yr ysgol yn gyfle i Spork fynd i’r afael â chriw o ferched creulon ac mae ei chymydog yn y parc trêlar yn ei hyfforddi i ddawnsio symudiadau ‘booty poppin’.

Having won so many awards on the international festival circuit the producers have started to lose count! Discover for yourself why the film has won over audiences worldwide through its depiction of its hugely endearing heroine Spork (“neither spoon nor fork”).

Mae’r cynhyrchwyr wedi stopio cyfri’r gwobrau a enillodd y ffilm hon ar y gylchdaith ryngwladol! Dewch i weld drosoch chi’ch hun pam fod y ffilm wedi swyno cynulleidfaoedd ledled y byd - a’r portread hyfryd o arwres annwyl, Spork (“neither spoon nor fork,” chwedl hi’i hun).

Writer and Director JB Ghuman and producer Christopher Racster will be in attendance to introduce the film and take part in a Q+A following the screening.

Bydd yr awdur / cyfarwyddwr, JB Ghuman, a chynhyrchydd y ffilm, Christopher Racster, yn bresennol i gyflwyno’r ffilm ac i gymryd mewn sesiwn Holi-ac-Ateb ar ôl y dangosiad.

7.00pm, chapter 1

7.00YH, chapter 1

The Boys’ Village was once a holiday home for coalminers’ sons, boasting a pool, sports yards and even a chapel. Fifteen years since its closure, little remains of its former glory as vandalism by local youths has reduced the village to almost rubble. With shattered glass and debris lining the rooms and hallways, it can be a parent’s worst nightmare or heaven on earth for a certain kind of child. It more or less is for Kevin. He has been eleven years old for quite some time now. Has it been years or decades?

‘Roedd y Boys’ Village ar un adeg yn gartref gwyliau i feibion glowyr - roedd pwll nofio yno, meysydd chwarae a chapel hefyd hyd yn oed. Bymtheng mlynedd ers iddo gau’i ddrysau, ychydig sydd ar ôl erbyn o’r pentref ac mae fandaliaeth wedi dinistrio bron yn llwyr yr hyn a fu. Â gwydr wedi chwalu a sbwriel ar hyd yr ystafelloedd a’r cynteddau, fe allai’r lle fod yn hunllef i riant - ond yn nefoedd ar y ddaear i fath arbennig o blentyn. A dyma Kevin, felly. Bu’n un ar ddeg mlwydd oed ers cryn amser bellach. Blynyddoedd neu ddegawdau?

2008 Iris Prize winner Till Kleinert returns to Cardiff for the screening of Boys Village which he made with the Iris Prize. The evening will also include interviews with special guests reminiscing over the past and looking forward to the future as Iris celebrates her 5th birthday.

Mae enillydd Gwobr Iris 2008, Till Kleinert yn dychwelyd i Gaerdydd i ddangos Boys’ Village a gwblhawyd gyda’i Wobr. Bydd y noson hefyd yn cynnwys cyfweliadau â gwesteion arbennig, fydd yn hel atgofion ac yn edrych tua’r dyfodol wrth i Iris ddathlu ei phen-blwydd yn 5 oed.

WEDNESDAY 5 October

8.30pm, Chapter 1

8.30YH, Chapter 1

August tells the story of two former lovers, Troy and Jonathan, who reunite after a long ago painful break-up. After spending several years in Spain, Troy returns to Los Angeles and decides to phone Jonathan and meet for coffee. A seemingly innocent rendezvous turns into an attempt to revive passions past. Only this time it’s not that simple as Jonathan has a new boyfriend, Raul, and is trying to make the right decision a second time around.

Mae August yn adrodd stori dau gyn-gariad, Troy a Jonathan, sy’n gweld ei gilydd eto ar ôl poen eu gwahanu. Wedi treulio sawl blwyddyn yn Sbaen, mae Troy yn dychwelyd i Los Angeles ac yn penderfynu ffonio Jonathan a’i wahodd i gyfarfod am goffi. Mae cyfarfod diniwed yn troi’n ymgais i ailgynnau’r fflam. Ond y tro hwn nid yw pethau mor syml; mae gan Jonathan gariad newydd, Raul, ac mae e am wneud yn siŵr ei fod yn gwneud y dewis iawn y tro hwn. Cyfarwyddwyd ffilm nodwedd ein noson agoriadol gan Eldar Rapaport, enillydd Gwobr Iris 2009. Mae gan ei ffilm hir gyntaf naws Ewropeaidd ac mae hi’n portreadu haf poeth yn LA a’r tensiynau rhywiol rhwng Troy a Jonathan.

The opening night feature is directed by our very own 2009 Iris Prize winner Eldar Rapaport. His accomplished first feature feels European in tone as he captures a hot LA summer, whch serves as the backdrop to some very realistic scenes of sexual tensions between Troy and Jonathan.

Cast member Murray Bartlett (Troy) will be in attendance to introduce the film.

Bydd yr actor Murray Bartlett (Troy) yn bresennol i gyflwyno’r ffilm.

A candid, sexy, and outrageously funny look at what an actor can – and will do – to survive in Hollywood. Young, handsome, and ambitious, Adam arrives from New York with dreams of making it big in L.A. He moves in with his zany best friend Candy who, between auditions, spends her time at the gym, shopping, or looking for a wealthy man. Adam gets off to a rocky start, complete with parking tickets and an insufferable job answering phones. A new job in production looks promising, but soon Adam finds himself dealing with down-and-out drectors, washed up starlets, and meth addicts. Iris favourite Casper Andreas returns to Cardiff with a mature film which is sexy, honest and entertaining. The rapturous audience response to screenings in the US has generated a huge buzz for the film which I am sure will be matched here in Europe.

Golwg onest, secsi a hynod ddoniol ar yr hyn y mae actorion yn fodlon ei wneud er mwyn sicrhau gyrfa lewyrchus yn Hollywood. Mae Adam yn ifanc, golygus ac uchelgeisiol ac yn cyrraedd o Efrog Newydd yn llawn breuddwydion am fod yn seren yn LA. Mae e’n symud i mewn gyda’i ffrind gwallgo’ Candy sydd, rhwng clyweliadau, yn treulio’i hamser yn y gampfa, yn siopa neu’n chwilio am ddyn cyfoethog. Mae pethau’n anodd i Adam ar y cychwyn - dirwyon parcio a swydd ddiflas yn ateb y ffôn. Mae swydd newydd yn y byd cynhyrchu yn edrych yn addawol ond buan y daw i gyswllt â chyfarwyddwyr di-nod, sêr oes a fu a phobl sy’n gaeth i ‘meths’. Mae ffefryn Iris, Casper Andreas, yn dychwelyd i Gaerdydd â ffilm aeddfed sy’n secsi, onest a difyr. Mae ymateb gorfoleddus i’r ffilm yn yr Unol Daleithiau wedi sicrhau cyffro mawr ac rydym yn siŵr y bydd yr ymateb i’r gwaith mor ffafriol bob tamaid yma yn Ewrop.

Writer and Director Casper Andreas will be in attendance to introduce the film.

LGBT families and children on film

Teuluoedd a phlant LGBT ar ffilm

10.30am, Chapter 1

10.30yh, Chapter 1

The Kids Are Alright is just one recent example where a gay family has taken centre stage in a mainstream film. With legal support for gay people increasing in parts of the world covering civil partnerships and adoption it appears that for some the gay experience is becoming the norm. This informal session will ask if film reflects what is happening in society at large and therefore is a mirror to reality or does cinema influence and change our perception of society. The panel will also look at examples of LGBT families on screen over the past 20 years.

Mae The Kids Are Alright yn un enghraifft ddiweddar o ffilm lle mae teulu hoyw wedi chwarae rhan ganolog mewn ffilm prif ffrwd. Â chefnogaeth gyfreithiol i bobl hoyw yn cynyddu mewn rhai rhannau o’r byd – i gynnwys partneriaethau sifil a hawliau mabwysiadu – ymddengys bod y profiad hoyw yn troi’n norm, i rai beth bynnag. Bydd y sesiwn anffurfiol hon yn gofyn a yw ffilm yn adlewyrchu’r hyn sy’n digwydd mewn cymdeithas yn gyffredinol; ai drych ar realiti ydyw neu a yw sinema yn newid ac yn dylanwadu ar ein canfyddiad o gymdeithas? Bydd y panel hefyd yn edrych ar enghreifftiau o deuluoedd LGBT ar y sgrin fawr dros yr 20 mlynedd diwethaf.

Cewch glywed peth o’i hanes dros y 12 mis diwethaf ac ychydig am ei gynlluniau ar gyfer y dyfodol hefyd wrth iddo sgwrsio gyda Llywydd yr Ŵyl, Andrew Pierce, o’r Daily Mail.

Julia is a 35-year-old English Literature teacher struggling with depression as she tries to get her life back together again after her long, intense love affair with Antonia. Feeling totally abandoned after she and her enigmatic girlfriend broke up, Julia is thrown into a desperate, painful process. Her life and her values have been tinged with unbearable melancholy and her life’s measure seems reduced to out-of-focus fragments of her memories. Her inner turmoil and conflicts hamper a process now made necessary - that of readapting to her new life.

Mae Julia yn athro Llenyddiaeth Saesneg 35 oed sy’n brwydro ag iselder wrth iddi geisio ail-greu ei bywyd ar ôl ei charwriaeth ddwys a hir ag Antonia. O ganol ei hunigrwydd llethol ar ôl iddi hi a’i chariad enigmatig dorri i fyny, caiff Julia ei thaflu ar ei phen i broses anobeithiol a phoenus. Mae ei bywyd a’i gwerthoedd fel petaent wedi’u hydreiddio â melancoli annioddefol ac mae ei bywyd fel petai wedi troi’n ddarnau o atgofion allan-o-ffocws. Mae ei chythrwfl mewnol yn amharu ar broses sydd bellach yn gwbl angenrheidiol - sef ail-addasu ar gyfer ei bywyd newydd. Er y gellid tybio ar yr olwg gyntaf bod y ffilm hon yn drwm braidd, y gwrthwyneb hollol sy’n wir. Mae’r lliwiau bywiog, gwaith camera llyfn a pherfformiadau cryfion yn sicrhau bod y ffilm yn astudiaeth emosiynol a chynnil o ymgais un fenyw i fwrw ‘mlaen â’i bywyd.

Although the subject matter might at first glance appear a bit heavy the film is anything but. The vibrant colours, fluid camera work and strong performances make for an emotional and satisfying study of one woman’s attempt to pick her self up and get on with life.

Unfazed by the attention he receives from women, Hugo searches for something meaningful to break up the monotony of his life. The young man becomes captivated with Octavio, a middle-aged local boxing champion, who must maintain a hard and gruff image for his fans and fellow fighters. When Octavio furtively acts on the subtle flirtations Hugo throws at him, he is abruptly rejected. Hugo tries to curtail his desire, but eventually surrenders to their magnetic attraction. They enter into an intense romance that would never be accepted in their small town in southern Chile.

Er ei fod yn cael llawer o sylw gan ferched, mae Hugo’n chwilio am rywbeth mwy ystyrlon i dorri ar undonedd ei fywyd. Mae e’n syrthio i swyn Octavio, dyn canol-oed a phencampwr bocsio lleol y mae’n rhaid iddo gyfleu delwedd galed a garw o flaen ei gefnogwyr a’i gydfocswyr. Pan fo Octavio’n ymateb i arwyddion cynnil Hugo, caiff ei wrthod yn ddisymwth. Mae Hugo’n ceisio claddu’i ddyheadau – ond yn y pen draw, rhaid iddo ildio i’r atyniad magnetig. Maent yn cychwyn perthynas ddwys – perthynas a fyddai’n gwbl annerbyniol i’w cymdeithas mewn tref fechan ne Chile. Ymgais Hugo a Octavio i ddod o hyd i hapusrwydd yw testun ffilm nodwedd gyntaf Julio Jorquera; mae’n stori syml sy’n dibynnu ar berfformiadau cryfion gan y prif actorion ac fe welwn ni’r berthynas yn datblygu a dyfnhau cyn iddi chwalu eto yn y pen draw.

Hugo and Octavio’s attempt at finding happiness is presented in Julio Jorquera’s first feature as a simple story which relies on two strong performances from the key players as we witness the passionate rise and fall of the couple’s relationship.

Two apprentice farmers slowly fall for each other in this beautiful debut feature by Benjamin Cantu. Marko is an apprentice at a large agricultural school outside Berlin where the days are passed with hard physical labour, working the land. The rest of the apprentices see him as a bit of a loner, and as the final exams approach, Marko keeps himself to himself. But when new apprentice, Jacob joins the farm, Marko takes immediate interest, and begins to open up to him. In the height of the summer heat, with their days spent in class or out in the fields, it’s only when the two embark on a night in Berlin that everything changes irrevocably.

Mae perthynas dau brentis ffarm yn datblygu’n raddol yn y ffilm nodwedd gyntaf brydferth hon gan Benjamin Cantu. Mae Marko yn brentis mewn ysgol amaethyddol fawr y tu allan i Berlin ac yn treulio’i ddiwrnodau mewn llafur caled corfforol ar y tir. Mae Marko’n bodoli ar wahân i weddill y prentisiaid ac wrth i’r arholiadau terfynol agosáu, mae’n cadw ei gwmni’i hun. Ond pan ddaw prentis newydd i’r fferm, Jacob, caiff diddordeb Marko ei danio ar unwaith, a dechreua ymateb i’r byd o’i gwmpas. Mae hi’n haf poeth ac maent yn treulio’u diwrnodau yn y dosbarth neu allan yn y caeau – a dim ond pan dreulia’r ddau noson ym Merlin, felly, y mae pethau’n newid am byth.

The film avoids the most obvious clichés about young gay love and the observational detail of farm life blends into a reality which is further enhanced by the fact that the cast (other than the two leads) were actual students from the working farm and agricultural college located 40 miles south of Berlin.

Mae’r ffilm hon yn osgoi’r ystrydebau amlycaf am gariad hoyw ifanc hoyw ac mae golygfeydd o fywyd ar y fferm yn ategu teimlad o realiti sy’n deillio o’r ffaith bod y cast (heblaw am y ddau brif actor) yn fyfyrwyr go iawn yn y coleg amaethyddol ar y fferm gydweithredol 40 milltir i’r de o Berlin.

Victoria, a famous photographer lives in a large house in a remote area of North Wales. Mia, a beautiful model, has been out of work since her pregnancy, and feels guilty for losing her child. When the two meet at Victoria’s home to create a new portfolio to rebuild Mia’s life the two women connect. Mia accepts Victoria as an outgoing flirty lesbian and both women engage in an emotional game where life tensions are released forcing both to confront feelings they never expected. But when Mia learns the history of the home… Filmed almost entirely on location in North Wales the rugged beauty of the landscape competes for attention with strong performances by two women who are out of control, ignoring the dangerous fine line that should not be crossed on seeking adoration.

Mae Victoria’n ffotograffydd enwog sy’n byw mewn tŷ mawr mewn rhan anghysbell o Ogledd Cymru. Mae Mia, model hardd, wedi bod yn ddi-waith ers ei beichiogrwydd ac yn teimlo’n euog ar ôl iddi golli ei phlentyn. Yng nghartref Victoria, er mwyn creu portffolio newydd i Mia fel y gall ailafael yn ei bywyd, mae’r ddwy’n dod at ei gilydd. Mae Mia’n tybio bod Victoria’n lesbiad allblyg a chwareus ac mae’r merched yn cymryd rhan mewn gêm sy’n rhyddhau tensiynau emosiynol – ond yn gorfodi’r ddwy i wynebu teimladau annisgwyl hefyd. Ac yna mae Mia’n dysgu hanes y tŷ mawr ... Wedi’i ffilmio bron yn gyfan-gwbl ar leoliad yng Ngogledd Cymru, mae harddwch garw y tirwedd yn cyfuno â pherfformiadau cryfion gan ddwy ferch sydd allan o reolaeth ac yn agosáu at y llinell fain a pheryglus honno na ddylid ei chroesi...
