The mind, both to lift itself from the cognitive charge and to broaden out into new spaces, continuously relies on external tools which have the task to store, amplify, speeden up and sustain data. Anyone can connect and disconnect from this “shared intelligence” this “always operating mind” with the advantage to leave intact the structure integrity. The connective intelligence aims to connect, link, put in contact intelligences. It is the part “in motion”, which relies on the intelligences “multiplication”, enhanced by connection.

Interactivity is a situation of comunicative interchange between man and machine, which causes the annullation of the counterposition between subject and object, until reaching a brand new configuration in which the two elements compenetrate.

Hypertextual expansion.

The logic structure of a hypertext is thoroughly similar to knowledge development, that can be represented with a conceptual map. Not only a sequential link between two concepts does not exist, but the very same concept are united

one with the other by a dense connection web. Knowledge itself is not closed, but performs jumps, real links between an information object and another one, which is strictly referred to him for some reason.t

* Computer has created a kind of interme-

diate cognition, a bridge of uninterrupted interaction, a sort of exchange between the world outside and the inside of our Self. Through the new tools, memory, intelligence, thinking organization, information treatment manifest themselves. These esteriorized cognitive functions operate like the human mind, but are located outer from it. The objectification of the individual on the screen offers the possibility to share with other people the cognitive content. The connection between thoughts and cognitive forms of several individuals represents one of the most significative elements of thought transformation, reached thanks to the spread of new technologies. The straightforwardness of the image makes undoubtedly the cognitive processes and the conceptual elaboration faster. The multimedia tools, which privilege the recourse to visual imagine and sound, allow mental constructions to arise, complex conceptualizations and significances. They generate different mental activities, different cognitive processes, different forms of learning, comprehension and interpretation of reality. We are facing a change of thought, from the logical-sequential-linear thought to the development of a logical-associative-reticolar thought and of an analogic-imaginative and symbolic thought.

40

*the modern mind The continuous objectification of thought due to constant interaction with the screen and with the web has deeply modified the way in which meaning is built.

41

logical - sequential - linear thought

1

The logic-linear-sequential thought always operates inside an observation field, definite beforehand, where the starting point is essential. It is a gradual process without logical leaps or temporal space but with a natural progressive increment with regu-

2

lar leaps. It is an horizontal thought. A unique central idea, in a chain of causes and effects, leads us from one element to another in a consequential series, everything must be demonstrable according to a logic, which is indeed consequential.

Each module is connected to a reticolar structure of different shape by logical connections (links). Each knot is a self-sufficient linguistic and comunicative unit. The choice between links allows unsequential paths of fruition of the informative environment: personalized movements guided by the reader interest, typical of the associative thought, which constitute

the surfing and permit the activation of cognitive, metacognitive and cultural processes. The hypertext allows associations among linguistic elements (words, sentences); in the hypermedia-multimedia this possibility is expanded and extended also to elements only constituted by static images, dynamic images, music and sounds.

analog - imaginative - symbolic thought

Symbolic thought is the representation of reality through the use of abstract concepts, like words, gestures and numbers. The imaginative thought manipulates the representative models of its own perceptive, verbal and conceptual knowledge. Analogic thought is that thought that does without words and, above al,l uses images, sensations, something which is abstract. It moves in a circular way, because it deals with relationships among spheres apparently different among themselves, connecting them to a common conceptual rhythm.

Digital object.

Digital objects that the individual meets on the computer screen can be compared to mental objects: precepts, icons and concepts. The first relate to the information we perceive when we are in presence of a sensorial object; icons are images of the

memory that rebuild the sensorial objects, no longer physically present; the concept shows itself through abstraction, for example in reading, and it offers therefore a different kind of knowledge, “less perceptive and less sensorial. While reading we generally

reconstruct events and actions in out head, through a process that does not directly involve senses. On a computer screen are shown objects “that maybe are both mental and also sensorial because we are in front of an object. Although they are reality re-

constructions, therefore they could be compared to mental organic objects and, given their double identity, they could demand a kind of knowledge which is both sensorial and conceptual at the same time.

Blogs and social networks are the evolution of intelligence on the net, it is a moment, a diary where to develop our identity, an extension of private identities and interest indicator, connected to the web of people who

share things in common, a personal web post, representing aside from the subject also the corresponding interest group, this becomes a connective interaction process.

* In our times, of violent psychological confusion, art is not an escape, nor a way out from confusion and uncertainty; on the contrary, it is a way to penetrate, a glimmer in the magma of collective conscience. Digital technologies have in fact such an innovative potential to produce a decisive change of what is going to be produced, not only by modifying the means, but the very essence of art as well. The creative result of computer is an image which belongs to everybody, because it springs from a collective and therefore connective source.

theory of the volcano

Work of art bursts on the scene through the crust of consensus, weakened reality, as a threat. New reality, a new ebullient conscience, gushes from the volcanic mouth, runs through the mountain slopes, slowing down and getting milder and milder along the way. The further it is from the peak, the colder and darker it gets, until it gets to the point where it settles. The last step is memory, the museum, the institution. Technological art, though, is entering the

second phase of the volcanic process; after having come out from the mouth, is cooling down enough quickly so that people can get close to it. We are looking for a wider perception of ourselves, proportioned to the worldwide distance of our technological “phantom limbs. Therefore we need new and more adequate worldwide metaphors to start recognize our plane, not only as our home, but as our true body indeed.

The role of art is to be the link between technology and psychology. Technology is explosion of innovation, psychology is conservative, because it produces mental organization which gives stability to society and to individual, it

stands in front of something it does not understand. Art is the link between the two because it operates inside sensitivity, it is like an interpretation of technology.
