ASSEMBLAGE 3

The design of this cinematheque building is inspired by the French movie “Last Year in Morienbad”. Obersving the various technique of how the movie is produce, I illustrated the ideas in various diagrams and model diagrams that later on will help me with the final result of the design. The site of the building is at North Eveleigh which is located at Wilson st with the dimension of 180 x 60 m.

The aspect that I chose of this movie is “memory”. The very fragmented memory, very ambiguous; almost hard to distinguish between the real and unreal world; limbo. I was interested with the layering technique in one of the flickering scenes in the movie and therefore various experiments were explored to develop this idea further. Jumping off to the last stage of the experiments, the concept model and 2D diagrams brought the ideas of how the internal and external spatial quality should be. Initially, triangle module was used in the interior of the building to strengthen my idea and concept, However, the idea was dismissed and instead of having triangle module on the wall, they will be represented by each of the spaces. It was done by flattenint the triangle module and extrude it up to form the space. therefore, visitors experience the fragmented memories by itself, live in it, feel it, and experience it.

Functional Diagram.

Functional relationship diagrams are used as the base foundation of the spacing programs in the building. shown in this page are two diagram with the same concept but different approach. fig 1 make use of the dot to show that its directly connected while fig 2 uses intersection to show how each room interact with each other. also, the distance between each of these modules illustrate the approximate distance in the actual space. each space are grouped based on their functions and accessibility.

Scheme one. Parti diagrams were produced to show the program approached. Figure 3 show how these rectangular shape were tweaked and figure 4 is the development of the figure 3. this parti focuses on the void space created by the intersection and as it develops the void can function as a public circulation as well. fig 5&6 on the other hand is a literal development of the functional diagram. showing much more direct solution to the scheme.

exploration. Interested at the very first diagram of intersecting parti, 3d model was made using layered box board. various configurations provide more ideas about the programming of the space and give the basic idea of the massing of the building.

a simplified floorplan were produced to give a clearer idea of where each rooms should be located. as this parti diagram focused on the void area created by the intersection therefore the void is used as a common area where it is a good spot for gathering because it is located in the middle of the building. the intersection on the otherhand will be a more private area because of the fact that it is so enlcosed and protected by the surrounding boxes giving a more secure feeling.

Parti diagram two.

closed space circulation

the developed parti diagram floorplan equip a bigger and open closed space spinal circulation. this open circulation circulation connects the whole separate building to be united. also by having a separate buidling, publiv and private access can be clearly distinguish as can be seen that the more prive functinos such as the residence and office’s are allocated in a very isolated manner.

character.

Figure 12. Figure 11.

The movie titled “Last Year in Marienbad has a very ambiguous storyline. The scene was jumping from one to another, making it hard to distinguigh which is the past and present. there was no timeline and it seems like the whole movie is just a dream or fragmented memory.

Choosing the flickering scene of the film and by Using the technique of layering, each of the character on every scene were cut and layered together accordingly. The first set, figure 11, is the scene where the couple was on a bar and the next scene, figure 12, is the same woman in her room.

diagramming.

The layered document showed the density of it. The most dense area was colored with grey, and the least dense was colored with yellow. Again, applying the layering technique, the results produced then developed further into a 3d diagram models.

Figure 13.

Figure 14.

model one.

This model was achieved by keep layering the diagram on figure 14 with watercolour. The residue of the final result provide the base for thie 3d diagram model. from this model, it shows a very meandering space resulting in a blocked circulation in some of the area.

Figure 15.

33

model two.

This model on the other hand was achieved by having the layered document in figure 13 poked using needle. the holes created according to the density as well. The most dense has the most holes and same goes with the least dense. weaving through the hole was strings and shadow studies were done to explore the results that can be achieved in which can be related to the aspect chosen.

Figure 16.

model three.

Overlaying the model in figure 15 with charcoal and again using the layering technique provide a very intricate result. shown in figure 17 is the process of develoment. When it gets into the third thumbnail, a model using plaster and fabric was made. the casted plater and cloth was to mimick the idea of turbulance from the third thumbnail. However, after this process of exploration, some areas on the model shows the characteristic of cave where space can be found hidden underneath between the fabric and plaster.

After having all the exploration of the film and making the 3d model, the parti diagram was developed again according to the result achieved from the experiments. the parti on figure 19 shows how the building is fragmented and retaining the meanding circulation based on the 3d model daigram.

process. the initial idea of having triangle module in the interior of the building was dismissed. Instead, Having the triangle module lying flat on the ground and also extrude them vertically and accordingly to the required area. Which means, the extruded space, from the flat triangle pattern, is the module by itself. Visitors experience the fragmented memories. In terms of the materiality, concrete and glass are used. The contrast between the two materials are adapted from the plaster model with the fabric.

47

Internal perspective. Assembling the idea of fragmented memory and cave like quality, various perspective perspective produced to show the atmosphere.
