The Importance of Hedgerows in Ireland

Hedgerows are an integral part of Ireland’s landscape and heritage. Hedgerows, which are made up of dense rows of scrub, trees and other vegetation historically served several practical purposes mainly to agriculture such as providing shelter to animals, marking out property lines and preventing soil erosion.

Today hedgerows also play a vital role within biodiversity, one of the main roles that hedgerows play in Ireland is providing a wildlife corridor. They allow wildlife to move between habitats particularly where landscapes may be fragmented assisting in wildlife avoiding predators. Hedgerows also provide food, shelter and nesting sites for birds, the dense scrub and vegetation

in hedgerows allows birds to be protected from harsh weather conditions and to be protected from predators. The flowering plants found in hedgerows also provide nectar which assists with the pollination of plants and crops. Hedgerows also play a vital role in mitigating against the impacts from Agriculture, Hedgerows can be used to reduce these impacts in several ways including acting as buffer between fields and habitats, carbon sequestration and reducing run-off from overland flow into our watercourses.

Overall Hedgerows are critically important to Ireland, serving as vital habitats for biodiversity, and defining our unique rural landscape.

CONT’D FROM COVER

A social enterprise of IRD Duhallow powering a new circular economy project, first of it’s kind in Ireland.

In a significant step toward reducing Ireland’s reliance on single-use plastics (SUPs), IRD Duhallow has launched a project to provide local authorities with reusable drink cups for use at nonprofit public events and festivals. This innovative initiative seeks to address the pressing issue of SUP waste, which has become a major environmental concern in Ireland, particularly within the festival and event industry.

In 2021, Ireland generated over 1.2 million tonnes of packaging waste, with an estimated 200 million single-use plastic cups consumed annually. These figures underscore the environmental challenges posed by SUPs, especially at large-scale public events. Despite a strong national push for sustainability, including policies such as the Circular Economy and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2022 and the Waste Action Plan for a Circular Economy 2020-2025, many local festivals and events struggle to implement reusable alternatives due to high costs and limited availability of

rental solutions.

IRD Duhallow’s new social enterprise directly addresses these challenges by providing an affordable and scalable solution for local authorities. The project will supply a stock of clean reusable cups, offer washing and maintenance services, and manage the collection and redistribution of cups for public events. By offering this service at a reduced cost, IRD Duhallow aims to make the transition to reusables economically viable for smaller festivals and local events.

“We’re thrilled to offer a practical solution that not only supports local festivals but also contributes to Ireland’s broader sustainability efforts,” said Maura Walsh, CEO at IRD Duhallow. “This project will help reduce plastic waste, promote environmental awareness, and enable local authorities to meet their waste reduction goals in a cost-effective way.”

The project is already receiving support from several local authorities, including Cork City, Cork County, Limerick, and Waterford, who have committed to using the reusable cup service for events scheduled for the last two months of 2025. Through this initiative, IRD Duhallow aims to reduce the environmental impact of public events while fostering

a cultural shift towards more sustainable practices.

In addition to waste reduction, the project is designed to promote behavioural change, encouraging both event organisers and attendees to embrace reusables.

The initiative will also play a crucial role in raising public awareness of the need to transition to a circular economy, in line with Ireland’s national sustainability goals.

The project will be rolled out initially across the Southern Waste Region, with plans to expand to other regions as demand grows. By providing this service at an affordable cost, IRD Duhallow hopes to empower communities and local governments to reduce their environmental footprint and contribute to a cleaner, greener Ireland.

The cups will be available for use from January 12th 2026, across the entire Southern Region which covers: Carlow, Clare, Cork City & County, Kerry, Kilkenny, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford & Wexford. We at IRD Duhallow look forward to work with our Nine Local authorities partners in the Circular economy project.

Health Savour the moment

When was the last time you enjoyed something? Savoured simple things? Felt joy without guilt? If you are still thinking then it’s been too long. For a lot of us, pleasure and enjoyment are the first things we sacrifice when we get busy or become over-whelmed. When life is challenging it can feel indulgent or selfish even to prioritise joy and happiness. But, pleasure is not a luxury, it is a necessity for our well-being, for our mental health. During stressful times positive emotions can really protect us. A 2019 study showed that making an effort to feel joy when stressed can dampen negative reactions, lessen selfcriticism and speed up recovery from difficult events. Also, denying ourselves pleasure can weaken our

immunity and physical health. So, how can we increase pleasure in the everyday? Savouring is a mindfulness concept that involves intentionally noticing, enhancing and prolonging positive experience. Savouring is the opposite of auto-pilot, where we rush through experiences with our minds elsewhere. When we savour an experience we fully attend to the pleasant aspects of it, for example, having our morning coffee while savouring the experience might involve sitting in a comfortable chair, noticing the smell of the coffee, noticing its colour, enjoying our favourite mug and really tasting the coffee- not rushing it down while scrolling on the phone or trying to do other jobs and barely noticing that we have even had a coffee let alone enjoy it. Savouring a moment doesn’t require that moment to be extraordinary, simple pleasures count too.

Others ways of savouring involve slowing down and noticing sensory details like taste, smell or sounds. We can also stop and name what is good about the moments, is it peaceful? Or calm? Or enjoyable? Gratitude can also be a savouring experience, taking time to acknowledge the meaning in an experience.

So, when you feel the stress building around putting up the Christmas tree, when you have been up to the attic three times to look for the fairy lights, when you have run out of patience- that’s the time for savouring. It will make all the difference.

Congratulations to the Boherbue Comprehensive School Junior Camogie team for their win in the Camogie County Final against MICC Dunmanway.

Staying Connected as the Nights Draw In: Nature’s Gentle Libido Boosters

As the darker evenings settle in and November draws to a close, many of us find ourselves craving a little more vitality, warmth, and connection. It’s a time of year when energy can dip, routines slow down, and intimacy can quietly slip down the priority list. With that in mind, this month we’re turning our attention to natural libido boosters—gentle, plant-based allies that support both desire and overall wellbeing.

Maca remains one of our most trusted favourites. Grown high in the Peruvian Andes, maca root is renowned for its ability to balance hormones, lift mood, and naturally support libido in all

genders. Whether you prefer the ease of Viridian’s organic maca capsules or enjoy blending Iswari’s maca powder into your morning smoothie or hot chocolate, it’s a beautiful daily tonic for stamina, mood, and overall vibrancy. Many people notice not only a boost in intimacy, but also in general energy and emotional resilience.

Alongside maca, several other herbs and wholefoods can offer a gentle nudge toward restored vitality. Korean ginseng is a deeply restorative adaptogenic root that nourishes the nervous system while supporting physical and emotional energy. For those seeking something soothing and hormone-supportive, shatavari is a wonderful option—especially for women navigating stress, cycle

changes, or the shifting hormones of perimenopause.

And of course, raw cacao deserves a special mention. Rich in magnesium and natural moodlifting compounds, cacao helps ease tension, soften stress, and support a sense of openness and connection. Enjoyed as a warm drink on cold evenings, it can be both comforting and quietly energising.

As always, remember that lifestyle plays a huge role in libido: nourishing meals, deep rest, regular movement, and meaningful downtime work hand in hand with these natural supports.

If you’re curious about any of these options or want help choosing the best fit for you, pop in for a chat—we’re always here.

Knocknagree Native To Host Fundraiser Morning Duhallow

Kerry Cancer Support Group will be the beneficiary from ‘A Mindful Morning’ fundraiser which will be hosted by Knocknagree native Denise Fitzpatrick at Teach Ísoagáin, Rathmore on Tuesday morning, December 16th.

This complimentary event is dedicated to gentle movement, connection, and compassion, all in support of the Kerry Cancer Support Group Health Link Transport Bus.

Activities on the morning will include a guided Meditation, supported breath work, mindfulness exercises and Yoga Nidra, a restorative practice that provides a soothing experience, allowing participants to unwind and rejeuvenate.

Denise Fitzpatrick said “It occurred to me that this fundraising event would be a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community. When I launched my small business, the local community offered me immense support. Yoga Le Chéile, Yoga Together is growing stronger thanks to this community backing. I simply wanted to offer something in return. None of us know when we might need a service like Kerry Cancer Support, and it’s incredibly reassuring to have such resources available should we ever need them.”

Denise is dedicated to ensuring this event is accessible to everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. “It’s not about how flexible you are or how perfect your pose looks,” Denise explained. “It’s about allowing yourself the space to breathe, move, and simply be—while supporting an incredible cause. Knowing when to step off the treadmill of life and take a break is essential, especially during challenging times, such as

Denise Fitzpatrick, Knocknagree, who is hosting the fundraiser and Breda Dyland, Manager at Kerry Cancer Support Group-Kerry Cork Health Link Bus

navigating cancer or being there for a friend or loved one. Yoga, meditation, and breath work can be invaluable tools to help cope with and manage life’s challenges, whether they involve cancer or other obstacles.”

Denise explains the ethos behind “A Mindful Morning”: “It’s a way of combining wellness with giving back! Cancer touches so many lives, and this event is our way of showing support. Every stretch and every deep breath contributes to keeping the Health link Bus on the road. After the session, attendees can enjoy a cup of tea, homemade treats, and quiet conversation, departing with a renewed sense of calm and gratitude. All donations raised will go directly to the Kerry Cancer Support Group – Health Link Transport Bus. An iDonate page has been established at idonate/ amindfulmorning.

“It will be such a beautiful start to the day,” Denise said. “Knowing that something so peaceful can also make a real difference to those facing tough times—that’s really special. I hope we can make a small difference.”

The Health Link Transport Bus, operated by the Kerry Cancer Support Group, operates across Kerry, West Cork, and West Limerick, not only for treatments but also to provide vital emotional and practical support to individuals and families affected by cancer. This service is more than just transportation; it delivers care and comfort directly to those who need it most.

For more information, please contact Denise at 086 8901234 to reserve your spot. There is no charge for this event, and all donations are made at your discretion. Pre-booking is essential.

Advent - A Time to Prepare Our Hearts

fgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfg

The Advent season is a four week period before Christmas that celebrates with anticipation the coming of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. It is a time when we can reflect on how we can prepare our hearts and homes for Christ’s birth. It is a time for our communities and families to remember, through prayer, reflections, music, and good deeds what the true meaning of the birth of Jesus is all about. The Advent season invites us to step away from what can be a frenzied time of shopping and parties and instead focus on how we should commemorate the birth of Jesus, one of the holiest times in our Catholic faith.

The Advent Wreath:

The evergreen wreath and candles are full of symbolism associated with the Christmas season. The wreath itself, which is made of various evergreens, signifies continuous life. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolises the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the eternal life we find in Christ.

The individual evergreens that make up the wreath have their own meaning that can be adapted to our faith. The laurel signifies victory over persecution and suffering. The pine, holly and yew signify immortality and cedar signifies strength and healing. The pine cones that decorate the wreath symbolize life and resurrection. The wreath, as a whole, is meant to remind us of both the immortality of our souls and God’s promise of everlasting life to us through Christ.

Advent Candles:

The four coloured candles represent the four weeks of Advent, and one additional candle is lit each Sunday. The flames of

the candles are a representation of the Christmas light approaching, bringing hope and peace in the struggle against darkness.

The first candle, which is purple, symbolizes Hope. It is sometimes called the “Prophecy Candle” in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. It represents the expectation felt in anticipation of the coming Messiah.

on earth, a kingdom of joy, peace and love.

2.Preparation for our death and our meeting with Jesus. It reminds us to be ready when that day comes as we do not know the day or the hour.

The second candle, also purple, represents Faith. It is called the “Bethlehem Candle” to remind us of the journey travelled by Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. The third pink candle symbolizes Joy. It is called the “Candle of the Shepherds” and is pink because rose is a liturgical colour for joy. The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday and is meant to remind us of the joy that the world experienced at the birth of Jesus. On the fourth week we light the final purple candle to mark the final week of prayer and penance as we wait for the birth of our Saviour. This final candle, the “Candle of the Angels”, symbolizes Peace. It reminds us of the message of the angels; “Peace on earth and Goodwill toward men.”

The white candle placed in the middle is lit on Christmas Eve. This candle is called the “Christ Candle “and represents the Life of Christ. The colour white is for purity because Christ is our sinless, pure Saviour.

Our Holy Mass Readings During Advent Have Three Distinct Themes:

1.The second coming of Jesus when He will come again into our world and establish His kingdom

3. Our preparation to welcome Jesus into our world and into our hearts -- born as a little baby in a stable at Bethlehem.

How do we prepare for Advent?

>Spend some time in prayer each day. Light your own Advent candle.

> Read the first two chapters of the Gospel of St. Luke which gives an account of the events leading up to the birth of Jesus.

> Make a special effort to get to Mass as often as possible even if you have not been there for some time. The Eucharist is Jesus and gives spiritual life to our souls.

> Go to confession and have your souls cleansed as white as snow.

> Make donations to worthy charities.

> Visit or contact someone who may be lonely and may be suffering the pain of bereavement at this time.

> Let our hearts be ready to welcome Jesus on Christmas morning.

He is Emmanuel, God with us. Medjugorje Message Nov 25, 1993

“Dear Children; I invite you in this time, like never before, to prepare for the coming of Jesus. Let little Jesus reign in your hearts and only then, when Jesus is your friend will you be happy.”
