Caring for the Future
Tamar Nurseries Plant Catalogue - Introduction
Welcome to Tamar Nurseries Set up in 1979, Tamar has grown into one of the country’s leading Nurseries. With well over a million plants grown each year and one of Europe’s largest ranges of trees up to semi-matures, we offer a complete package for Local Authorities, Landscapers, Architects, Retail Outlets and Garden Designers as well as an excellent in house product for Garden Centres. Just over a year ago Tamar decided to open up an office based in the heart of Holland called Tamar-Direct. We work very closely with 10 growers and choose the best quality trees for the best price and supply direct to the end consumer. We have also finished the transformation of our nursery into the most environmental friendly nursery in Great Britain. Tamar also joined a group of local businesses called Quintus, together we supply a number of major retailers in the U.K. All these activities were carried out in between our already busy days but thankfully, we have a well motivated and dedicated team at Tamar Nurseries. We would not be there without them. I hope this updated ca talogue will be a useful tool when planning, researching or hopefully ordering your plant requirements. If you would like to find out more about us, please be assured, you are more than welcome to visit our nurseries and find out why we go for customer delight! John Huibers Managing Director.

The Tamar Plant Book The Tamar Nurseries Plant Book is designed to show plant buyers and specifiers, the full range of products we have on offer. The plant descriptions and photographs make your plant selection simple. If you cannot find what you want in the catalogue, simply call our experienced sales team for up to date information. Our plants are listed in accordance with the National Plant Specification, your guarantee of a quality product.
The Nursery The Nursery Certification Scheme
Tamar Nurseries are accredited members of the Horticultural Trades Association, Nursery Certification Scheme. We believe that specifiers should only ask for plants in accordance with the scheme. When specified our nursery will supply plants to the Nursery Certification Scheme guidelines and in accordance with the National Plant Specification. This is your assurance of quality plants supplied and handled in the best possible conditions.
Tamar are based on the Norfolk, Cambridgeshire border and located in the heart of the rich arable Fenland area. The nursery production site is fortysix acres, of which four acres are covered growing areas. The nursery is equipped with the latest technology for irrigation, drainage, I.P.M. application and growing of hardy nursery stock. The majority of the plants grown at Tamar are contract propagated and monitored constantly. This gives us total control of the quality of our shrubs from day one.
Quintus Partnership “As individual professionals in our specific categories, we will jointly be known for putting the customer first. By providing the widest possible range of quality products, we offer exceptional value, service, technical and product support and wherever possible exceeding our customers expectations” Tamar Nurseries are members of The Quintus Partnership. The Quintus Partnership Limited is a group of growers operating under a co-operative constitution. It was established in 1997 by five specialist growers who realised that a more controlled and cost effective supply route into UK multiple retailers would give them the ability to offer stability and assurances to customers of consistent supply. The decision to form Quintus was prompted by the retail sector undertaking rationalisation of supplier bases resulting in the need for one organisation to be able to supply a range of products whilst still preferring to maintain contact with the grower.
The National Plant Specification Our aim is to grow and supply plants that either meet or exceed the national plant specification. That means not only are our plants always sold by pot size volume but also, plant size and number of branches or breaks. We believe that quality plants, true to name – make true value.
Since August 2005 Tamar Nurseries offers a direct purchase facility from Holland. This basically means anybody can buy direct from the Dutch nursery and cut the middle man out, it is all about saving you money, but still having the flexibility and the advantage to choose from a huge range of quality trees. It doesn’t matter if it is a one year old whip or a 35-40 five times transplanted semi-mature tree. This service has been going for one year now and proves to be successful. Tamar-Direct doesn’t only have it’s own tree fields based in Opheusden, which is based in the middle of Holland, but also has very close links with another dozen growers which are all specialised in a particular crop. Because we still grow our own trees on a small scale means we stay up to date with the industry without loosing the skill and knowledge we acquired over the last 25 years. A major advantage is that we are not having to push hard to sell our own stock but instead we will make sure you get the best quality for the best possible price from the specialised growers working hard to meet your specification. All the growers are based within a radius of a few miles, therefore supply to our new despatch shed is very quick. All despatch is done by well trained staff and qualified staff with lots of experience Tamar-Direct operates the same IT system as our nurseries based in Wisbech, therefore communication, information and traceability is of high standard. Transport is done by a well known haulage company with lots of experience and delivering into Great Britain daily. Please bear in mind that all deliveries need to be economical in order to qualify for free delivery. We try to prevent any problems by careful planning, but if a problem does occur then there is always the back-up of Tamar based in Wisbech. For more information, please contact sales in our offices at Wisbech on 01945 464383 or contact Karl at Tamar-Direct on 0031 488 443106. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com

We strongly advise that gloves are worn at all times as a number of plants are poisonous or thorny and may cause harm. Always ensure that staff trained in First Aid are on site.
Environmental We take great care for the environment and as a team we passionately believe we can contribute to fight the pollution of our wonderful planet.
Since 2000 we invested a substantial amount on redeveloping the whole container nursery (11 hectares) into a modern and efficient nursery. All the water either by rain or irrigation is being collected, checked on EC and PH and then stored in newly built reservoirs ready for use again. With the introduction of the Intergraded Pest Management, we managed to reduce chemical application by 35 %. Perfect planning on water application and crop cycles has reduced the chemical use by another 10 %.
All kinds of plastic, wood, cardboard, waste oil and office waste is 100 % recycled and many other efficiency improvements have been made in order to reduce our usage of all kinds of energy. DEFRA is using us as a benchmark as we are one of the most environmental nurseries in Great Britain producing Hardy Nursery Stock. Please let us know if you would like some more information, we will do anything to protect Mother Earth.
