The Infidel Do not be misled by the serious political overtones of the title, The Infidel is a crash course in humorous cultural collisions with an identity crisis at its core. Mahmud Nasir (brilliantly played by Omid Djalili) is your basic middle-class and middle of the spectrum Muslim, working as a cab driver in East London to support his wife and two adult kids. Unpacking boxes at the home of his recently deceased mother, he stumbles across adoption papers with his name on it. Startled by this revelation, he visits the adoption agency to get more information and finds out that his birth parents are Jewish and his real name is Solly. Reluctant to let his family in on this distressing news, especially his son engaged to a Muslim girl whose stepfather is a radical Muslim cleric, Mahmoud experiences an identity meltdown. He further discovers his father is still alive but not well in a nursing home. He is abetted in this journey by an unforeseen encounter with a Jewish-American cabbie named Lenny (Richard Schiff), who takes Mahmoud on, in an effort to teach him how to be more Jewish, in order to please the rabbi blocking him from seeing his dying father. With this scenario as the setting, the humor is really off the charts. Lenny’s lessons are more about Jewish cultural stereotypes, like learning to say “Oy” with the proper shoulder shrug, or dancing like Tevia from Fiddler on the Roof. This is a film that uses humor to pierce through delicate issues of “religious identity,” revealing the absurdity, when it serves to divide rather than unite.

Your personal E-therapist is in the house!
Should I Relocate When you made the decision to move back to Tortola, what was your reason? You must sit and take a personal inventory of your life on a deep level. What are your goals and passions, your dreams and your aspirations and can they be met here? If after your soul searching and trying the options mentioned above, your answer is a resounding no, then relocation could be a possibility. You can pull out a globe, spin it until it stops and then close your eyes, place your finger on a spot, then open your eyes and …voila, you have your new destination. Or you could research different locations, look at the job prospects there, size of the city, whether it is a laid back or busy place, what sort of activities are available that will suit your taste and preferences and what is the cost and standard of living. If you are considering relocation because you are running from something, remember your thoughts, feelings, attitudes and perhaps your outlook on life, go with you wherever you go. Relocation is a big deal, it is not a simple thing, so think it through thoughtfully and maybe discuss it with someone whose input you value. While change can be scary, it can also be very liberating. You have the opportunity to start over, to do things differently and this could very well be the biggest adventure of your life.
Dear Koren, I am so fed up of the way things are going in Tortola. I ended a relationship about a year ago, my job is a dead-end one and I don’t have any siblings here – they both live in the United States. What do you think about me picking up and just moving to another country? I feel very stagnant here and with a degree, I don’t think I will have any problems finding a job. I moved back here from the US about four years ago, but home is not what I expected. – Restless Dear Restless, Some have said, “home is where the heart is,” but it seems like your heart is no longer here. You mentioned your relationship, your job and your family as reasons why you do not feel grounded here anymore. I did not hear mention of any friends – did you not make any for the four years you have been back? Before you make the decision to relocate, you should try making some changes first. Expand your circle of friends, so that you have a support system and have company to spend time with recreationally. This can be done by inviting others out and spending time with persons you meet with whom you have much in common. You could also join a club, volunteer your time or find other activities that stimulate you. As it relates to your job, perhaps a move to another department can make a difference. Take a course, ask for more responsibilities or take on a project that will challenge you and make your creative juices flow.

This Week’s Feature Story
Shake Your Boogie! Described as “musical nirvana” by fans – Reverend Raven and the Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys are bringing their foot-stomping fun blues to the JR this Friday and Saturday night from 8pm. Long known as one of the US’s best kept blues secrets, the band is known for their blistering hot guitar licks, poignant and sultry sax, and their rhythmic drum and bass, providing an eclectic musical mix. The resultant energy filled grooves makes you feel good and want to get up on the table and dance. Rik Raven became known as “Reverend” because of his days as a chaplain in the Armed Forces where he served in the Navy for 15 years. After his tour of duty, he made Wisconsin his home and for a while now the band has been the namesake of Wisconsin’s Blues Scene. The Reverend’s tasteful guitar playing and the solid ensemble of the Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys makes him one of the most well respected veterans of the blues scene in the Midwest. He has opened for BB King, backed up Madison Slim for ten years and feels blessed that he can earn a living playing guitar and standing on chairs and tables. The band plays big, solid

sounds and their philosophy is that if their music can put a smile on your face and gets you to shake your rear end – then they have done a fine job. They play both covers and their own material, and with their strong musicianship all around, this band has got it all. Don’t miss this favorite blues band this weekend and pick up a copy of their new CD Shake your Boogie that is said to capture the “live” experience and currently rests at No. 10 on the worldwide Roots Time Blues Charts. That way you can have a reverential experience anytime! — Jan Critchley

Charlie T’s Lobster House at Pusser’s East Crab Cakes served with tartar sauce and sweet corn sauté followed by Mussels in a white wine and tomato herb broth. Then came the Lobster Bisque, Anegada Seafood Chowder and their new take on a traditional dish – Lobster Mac ‘n Cheese. The Rum Cake served with coconut ice cream for desert was a fitting finale to the evening. Although the new theme of the restaurant is seafood, there is still something for everyone with staples such as pizza, steak, burgers and their famous wings are still on the menu. The restaurant is open every evening except Tuesday; happy hour is daily from 5pm7pm. With the warm relaxing atmosphere, friendly staff and great views – this is the perfect way to get your slice of seafood heaven.
The recently renamed Charlie T’s Lobster House at Pusser’s East will not disappoint seafood lovers, Head Chef Tony Springer and Tony Dee, Food and Beverage Director have developed a new menu focusing on fresh fish and seafood with king crab and lobster as the house specialties. Their philosophy is to steer away from heavy sauces that can overtake the delicate flavor of the fish and seafood and instead execute on simplicity. Fresh fish is flown in twice weekly from Miami and they are teaming up with local fishermen to get the freshest local catches available. BVI purveyors are also being approached to supply the restaurant with locally grown produce. After a warm welcome from Mack, the Restaurant Manager, we were invited to sample some of the new dishes. To start, we had Shrimp Cocktail with a spicy cocktail sauce,
