1. THE CONGRESS

T

he 60th IPSF World Congress is an international event co-organized by the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF) and the Students’ Association of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (AEFFUP - Associação de Estudantes da Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade do Porto).

It had its bid submitted and aproved in August of 2012, during the 59th IPSF World Congress in Hurghada, and these two associations came together and started right away with the preparations of the most important and biggest event for pharmacy students.

1.1. Who can participate? 1) Any pharmacy student; 2) Alumni (until 5 years after graduation); 3) Professionals from the pharmaceutical branch.

1.2. What is the dimension of the congress? The 60th IPSF World Congress can count up to 750 participants all over the world. The General Assembly from IPSF branches out into 3 sub-types of Associations: full members, local members and individual members. Some other Humanitarian, Profissional and Students’ Associations are also present during the congress, which detain protocols and Memoranda of Understanding with IPSF. This abundance of organizations present at the congress make up a critical mass that enables it to be one of the best annual events in the pharmaceutical field.

THE LOGO The logo chosen for this event tries to show the viewers some of the most important landmarks from the beautiful city of Porto. From the shape of the Porto Wine Bottle, to the Luís I Bridge and even the Clérigos Tower, our logo makes you travel into a journey throughout these 3 Porto’s iconic marks. The blue colour from the logo, portraits the amazing wall tiles so commonly seen in our city, making it one more reason why we chose them to also appear in our congress poster. 22 59th IPSF WORLD CONGRESS - Utrecht, the Netherlands

1.4. Events Educational Symposium The Educational Symposium, with “Professional regognition of pharmacists through education” as its theme, will be based on questions about the pharmaceutical profession. The intervention at this particular matter is of outmost importance since it has a huge role on a continuous improvement and global harmonisation of the pharmaceutical carreer ladder. For example, continuous evaluation: should it be made by the faculties or the National Pharmaceutical Society?

Scientific Symposium In this symposium some of the most notorious personalities responsible for the evolution of science, with researches that reach every subject about pharmaceutical sciences, will come together at this congress for a deep discussion. Personalised medicine will be the core subject of this symposium with “Translational pharmaceutical sciences: From the bench to the patient bedside” as its theme.

Patient Counseling Event The Patient Counseling Event tries to show the importance of pharmaceutical guidance and to improve our role as pharmacists in public health, encouraging and promoting the development of our profession, which should have a more active role on society. The participants from each country will compete against each other in a small simulation, where they will have to advise the patient, showing their skills and putting into practice real pharmaceutical care.

Public Health Campaign

Social and culture

In the past few years, Public Health Campaign has been a growing aspect in the Congress. As health students, we want to contribute for the improvement of people’s health and raise their awareness about the importance of being an active agent for self-well-being. With the help of graduated pharmacists, the participants will have the opportunity to use their capabilities and scientific knowledge to raise awareness in population about a specific health theme.

The congress also aims to give the opportunity for participants to interact in a social and cultural environment. For that, it will be organized theme nights and an Excursion Day so that the participants learn about Porto in all different ways, from the traditional aspects till the contemporary culture that this city offers.

General Assemblies The General Assembly (GA) is the IPSF higher decision-making body, where federation’s objectives are discussed and decided, as well as policies that should be applied. Essentially, its structure relies on the official delegates from each national organization that have vote rights, but other participants can attend as well. One of its objectives is to evaluate and deliberate about international cooperation principles, how to initiate new studies and formulate recommendations in order to promote international politics cooperation. General Assemblies occur simultaneously with other activities, being preferentially destined to official delegates.

Compouding Event This is the most recent event, counting with only one edition so far! The purpose of this competition is to reflect on formulation/compounding work that pharmacists usually do. The challenge lies on the participant develop the best method to prepare a formulation taking into consideration the study case.

Clinical Skills Event This concept was developed by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP). This event was created to encourage students to practice and develop their clinical skills through problem solving and, of course, to promote the pharmacist role when it comes to patient care. The Clinical Skills Event (CSE) focuses in helping the participant to use his clinical knowledge to solve and improve drug therapies of pacients. 8

2. ORGANIZATION IPSF

AEFFUP

The International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF) was founded in 1949 by eight pharmacy student associations in London. The Federation now represents approximately 350,000 pharmacy students and recent graduates in 70 countries worldwide. IPSF is the leading international advocacy organisation for pharmacy students promoting improved public health through provision of information, education, networking, and a range of publications and professional activities. IPSF initiatives focus mainly on the areas of public health and pharmacy education and professional development. Initiatives include public health campaigns, research on issues in pharmacy education and workforce development, the Student Exchange Programme, organising international and regional congresses and symposia, and publication of the IPSF News Bulletin, Newsletter and educational supplement Phuture. IPSF holds Official Relations with the World Health Organization (WHO), Operational Relations with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and Roster Consultative Status with the Economic Social Council of the United Nations (UN ECOSOC). IPSF works in close collaboration with the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). The IPSF Secretariat is supported and hosted by the FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation) in The Hague, The Netherlands.

The Students’ Association of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (AEFFUP - Associação de Estudantes da Universidade do Porto), was founded in February 23rd in the year of 1929 with the main goal of connecting Pharmacy students and allow them to have a voice and express their thoughts, as to support students in their curricular course with extracurricular tools acquired through its seminars. Registered in Notary Public in the year of 1987, this Association has had, throughout its history, defining moments like the times when there was a dictatorship regimen, instituted by Salazar, which prohibited students’ associations. As AEFFUP existed before that period, this Association was the source of many activities from other faculties in the Porto University. Throughout its history, AEFFUP was a founding member of the Portuguese Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (APEF - Associação Portuguesa de Estudantes de Farmácia), became an IPSF Member in Association and has participated in EPSA (European Pharmaceutical Students’ Association). AEFFUP now represents more than 1400 students, and it is a recognized institution among other students’ associations and in the pharmaceutical sector in Portugal.
