IPFW at a glance

INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E

one university. two great names.

As northeast Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning. The university offers more than 185 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics. TM

Born separately, decades apart, and conjoined in 1964 along the banks of the St. Joseph River, Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne offers an outstanding education at a great value.

IPFW continues to grow, both in numbers of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen new soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as for members of the community. IPFW now has Student Housing, offering a more traditional university experience to full-time students. Plans for a new music building and medical education building are in the works, and fundraising efforts have already begun. IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schools of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are dozens of student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups range from departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. There are also several intramural sports groups.

The university offers more than 185 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs, taught by distinguished professors.

IPFW receives its accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. 2

Fort Wayne history of the summit city Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee River and Wabash River basins.

Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second-largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are three professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets, the Midwest League’s Single A baseball Fort Wayne Wizards (whose parent club is the San Diego Padres), and the United Indoor Football Association’s Fort Wayne Freedom. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisies, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights. Fort those who are interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

…with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana.

Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of television, Philo T. Farnsworth, was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.

Mark Pope

INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E

director of athletics Mark Pope was named IPFW’s director of athletics in July 2001 as the university was transitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I. That transition was completed Sept. 1, 2002, as IPFW earned NCAA Division I certification — on schedule and on budget.

TM

Since that initial year, Pope has set about transforming IPFW Athletics into a program worthy of the name “Division I.” Among his accomplishments are the following: ▼ The annual IPFW Soccer Showcase was reorganized, drawing 11,500 fans in 2003 and 15,000 fans in 2004 ▼ Men’s basketball attendance increased tenfold from 2000, including the highest percentage increase of all Division I institutions in 2003 ▼ Women’s volleyball attendance tripled from 2002 to 2003 ▼ Men’s volleyball attendance was ranked third nationally in 2004 ▼ Contributions to Athletics have increased by 50 percent from 2001 to 2003 ▼ The Gates Sports Center and baseball field have undergone significant renovations ▼ Men’s and women’s golf were added as sponsored sports ▼ In cooperation with the IPFW Alumni and the Indiana–Purdue Student Government Association, IPFW’s Homecoming tradition was created ▼ The IPFW Stomp Band was organized Despite these successes, Pope has always focused on the student component of the IPFW student-athlete. Last year Pope’s departmental goal of a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) was realized, as IPFW student-athletes achieved a 3.01 GPA. The IPFW softball, tennis, cross country, and track teams have earned All-Academic honors from their respective associations. IPFW Athletics graduates its student-athletes at a rate that is double that of the IPFW all-campus rate. Pope holds a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from Indiana University. He has been a member of the Bar of the State of Indiana for 27 years. Pope and his wife, Julie, are the proud parents of two sons, Brent and Brad.

IPFWWOMEN’SVOLLEYBALL’05

Head Coach Kelley Hartley Hutton IPFW Head Women's Volleyball Coach Kelley Hartley Hutton reached the 100 victory plateau just four matches into the 2004 season. Bowling Green State University proved to be win number 100 for Hartley Hutton while at the Northwestern Labor Day Invite. The Dons then went on to add 22 more wins to finish their fourth Division I season with a 24-10 record— their best so far. The Dons ended the 2004 season ranked 13th in the Mideast Region and Hartley Hutton was voted “Independent Coach of the Year” for the second straight year after leading the Dons to its second Independent Tournament Title in three tries. Hartley Hutton now boasts a 122-67 (.645) record at IPFW and a career record of 259-134 (.659) over an 11 year career. She ranks fifth in winning percentage among NCAA head coaches with more than five years at a four-year college, but fewer than five years in Division I. Carrying the torch through the Dons' final two years of Division II play, Hartley Hutton then led the transition to the Division I level. She directed IPFW to a regular season championship in 2000, its last year competing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and compiled an overall record of 23-7 that season. In 2001, the Dons first year of Division I play, they posted a 13-14 mark followed by a 16-18 season in 2002—just shy of the .500 mark again. In 2003 the Dons rolled to a 22-10 record, and in 2004 they improved to a 24-10 record. For the educational and cultural experience of her student-athletes' lifetime, Hartley Hutton took the squad to Brazil in May 2003 for competitions, tourist excursions, and team bonding. It also meant going home for middle blocker Fabiana Souza (a native of Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and playing in front of her family in an IPFW jersey. Souza has led the Dons in kills since her arrival and last year broke the IPFW season record, banging out 621. She also led the team in block solos (29) and aces (44). She was named Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row at the Independent Championship and was on the All-Tournament team as well. Off the court, Big Brothers/Big Sisters is Hartley Hutton's favorite nonprofit organization and she has made time to mentor an area "little" since 2002, a relationship she cherishes. IPFW women's volleyball matches are standard fall events for the organization's First Friends Program. After those matches, Hartley Hutton and her team use this as an opportunity to talk to area youth about the importance of education and setting goals. Hartley Hutton came to IPFW in 1999 after serving one year at Robert Morris University rebuilding that program. In just one year, her recruiting class led the Colonials to a Northeast Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 1999, redeeming a seventh place league finish the year before. Hartley Hutton began her coaching career at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio for four seasons (1994-97), leading the team to back-toback Mid-Ohio Conference titles and the NAIA tournament (1996 and 1997). At Walsh, she compiled a record of 131- 44, earned MOC Coach of the Year twice, and was the league's chairperson and regional representative. She also served as the assistant athletic director and senior woman administrator at Walsh. A 1991 graduate from the University of Toledo, Hartley-Hutton played four years for the Rockets serving as captain her junior and senior years. She earned a M.S. in sports administration from Bowling Green State University in 1993 while working at the Mid-American Conference office. After completing a one-year NCAA internship with the MAC, she was appointed to a full-time position in 1992. Kelley and her husband, Craig Hutton, were married in February 2004 after meeting at IPFW. They reside in Fort Wayne with their dog, Jazz.

Florio lettered in volleyball at Syracuse University from 1997–2000. She served as the team's cocaptain her senior year. During her career, she played in 420 games, recording 629 kills, 528 digs, 366 blocks, and 109 service aces. Florio ranks 10th all-time at Syracuse in kills, fifth in blocks, and ninth in service aces. Julie also brings extensive club, camp, and clinic coaching experience to the program. She has taught at Syracuse, Hofstra, Illinois, IPFW, and the World Volleyball Training Center, as well as with the USAV Girls Club, Creole Big Apple, and the Fort Wayne Volleyball Club.

A Look Ahead... When the official whistles and beckons for the first serve of the 2005 IPFW women’s volleyball season on Aug. 27 in the Gates Sports Center, the Mastodons will embark on their hunt for its third straight 20-plus win record. Following the program’s first 20-win season in 2003, the Dons tallied a 24-10 record last year en route to its second Independent Championship in three years.

“We are not a one-person team anymore because we have recruited other solid players and have more balance in our offense than recent years. But, you just can’t deny that she is a huge factor in our program’s success. She has earned countless accolades while sporting the IPFW jersey and is on track to break the IPFW all-time kills record in the front half of the season.”

“Our returning players are very hungry to leave a legacy as the team with the most Division I wins in our program’s history,” said Hartley Hutton. “Our returnees have tasted success and have a good understanding of the preparation and commitment necessary to build on what they have already accomplished. It is clear that our athletes are aiming for repeating as the Independent Champions and 25 wins—lofty goals.”

Look for the Mastodons to play their trademark solid defense and display patient and sound ball control. IPFW ranked 37th in the nation in digs per game last year averaging 18.18 per game. Tenacious defense has been a trademark of IPFW teams dating back to when coaching legend Arnie Ball was at the helm of both the men’s and the women’s teams. “Though we have always been a strong defensive program, Steve Florio has held our team to an even higher standard, and it has shown during his two years on our staff. He helped us devote even more time to serve-receive practice and has implemented new strategies,” said Hartley Hutton.

Despite losing three seniors, including two starters (four-year starting setter Lindi Bankowski and four-year starter opposite/middle hitter Lindsay Brammer), Hartley calls her 2005 team experienced. “All of our seven returning players have earned a starting spot for our team at some point. And setter Erika Leitzke, a transfer, played with our team all spring and brings starting experience with her as well.”

Five freshmen comprise one of the most talented incoming classes since Hartley Hutton was handed the Mastodon reins. “Our staff expects each freshman to contribute and even push for a starting job. They each come from sound high school and club programs and will offer more depth then we have had in past years.”

And then there is the Fabiana Souza (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) factor—Fabiana, Fabi, or Fabulous, she’s been called all three. Hartley just calls her a preseason All-American candidate. She was ranked 15th in the nation (of 316 Div. I teams) with 5.18 kills per game last year and shined against high caliber competition. She also was second (to the libero) on the team in digs averaging 3.4 per game.

Setting “We are fortunate to have three very good setters—and cursed. Other years we have lacked depth in setting, while the challenge this year will be to utilize all of their talents,” said Hartley. Seniors Erika Leitzke (Hustisford, Wis./Troy State University) and Ashlee Roth (Leo, Ind.) and freshman Jessica Dominiak (Waterville, Ohio) will handle the setting duties. Leitzke made a smooth transition into the starting position and gained valuable playing experience with the IPFW team during the spring season. “Erika has very strong and fast hands as well as excellent decision-making skills. She’s the early favorite for the starting position.” Roth got the starting nod for part of last season and offers a bigger block. “Ashlee fights for playing time and has proved that her ability as a blocker is an asset to the team too.” Freshman southpaw Jess Dominiak led St. Ursula Academy to a state title in Ohio a year ago, and Hartley believes she has all the ingredients to challenge for playing time. “Jess is the type of setter who can adapt to new teammates and a new system quickly. She has a bright future at IPFW.”

18

IPFWWOMEN’SVOLLEYBALL’05

Middle Blocker/Opposite Fabiana Souza, who broke the IPFW record for kills in a season last year (621), is the anchor in the middle. A prolific attacker who has only been left off an All-Tournament Team once in three years, she has played all attacking positions well and therefore could be moved to another position if needed. “Fabi would be an effective attacker from any position because she knows how to score using all angles, tooling the block, hitting all tempo sets, and mixing up speeds. It’s not just that she out jumps or overpowers the opponent—she out smarts.”

Liberos Sophomore Peachy Jankowski (Fraser, Mich.) grabbed the starting libero job as a freshman, leading the team with 3.79 digs per game. Freshman Christine Simon (Bowling Green, Ohio) will compete for playing time in the backcourt, too. “I feel much better about the libero position going into this season. Peachy was kind of thrown to the wolves as a starter last year, but she worked through the challenging times and is tougher and more confident as a result. Christine is a nice addition to our backcourt, too, and will at least see playing time as a defensive specialist.”

Though she’s made gigantic strides as an offensive threat, junior Claire Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is known for timely blocks, followed by enthusiastic fist-pumping celebrations. Watch out for No. 4, fans, Hartley Hutton says her best volleyball has yet to be seen.“She’s an intelligent read blocker with an impulse to go after the ball. Claire is fast, too, and takes conditioning very serious. I am expecting her to be a more of a take-charge type of middle this year.”

The Mastodons open up at home on Aug. 27 hosting Big East opponent DePaul. IPFW handed the young DePaul squad a 3-0 loss in the Gates Sports Center last year. Challenging early play at the Hofstra Invitational (Miami of Ohio and Temple) and the Western Illinois Invitational (Southern Miss and Murray State) will test the Mastodons on the road. IPFW then travels to No. 8 Florida for the Florida Classic, Sept. 16-17, before hosting and enjoying a home crowd for the Ball State match-up on Sept. 20 in the Gates Sports Center. Other home opponents include Chicago State, Wright State, Indiana State, Eastern Michigan, Oakland, and 2004 Mid-Continent Conference Champions, Valparaiso.

Freshmen Jessica Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Elly Bahlman (Union City, Mich.) add immediate size and depth to the middle and opposite positions. “With Jessica’s work ethic, skills, and coachable attitude, she is poised to be a starter. She just looks like a force and then backs it up every time I watch her practice or play,” said Hartley Hutton. “Elly is physically gifted, too. She needs some time to adjust to our system of play and the speed of collegiate volleyball.”

Northern Colorado will host the season-ending Division I Independent Volleyball Championship in November, where IPFW will look to defend its title and take home the trophy for the third time in four years.

Outside Hitter Junior Nicole Howell (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and sophomore Cynara Martins (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) earned the starting positions last year and held their respective jobs for two reasons: ball control and gutsy defense. Martins ranked second on the team in kills per game (2.75) and third in digs (3.16) while pestered by nagging injuries.

IPFW ended the 2004 season ranked 13th in the Mideast Region. “It is another challenging schedule, but by winning key matches along the way we feel like we can earn a solid RPI and remain ranked in the region.”

“I think we will see a different Cynara this season. She had a good freshman year for us last year, but she was very unsatisfied and worked to become more fit and injury free heading into this season.” “Respected for her defense and passing prowess, Nicole also packs the heat on the outside and bangs a jump serve. She’s an exciting player.” Also pushing for a starting position as an outside is junior Amanda Pfister (Auburn, Ind.). Pfister has played the role of “super sub,” but Hartley Hutton believes she can vie for a starting front row position. “Amanda is the biggest leaper on the team and now has worked to develop a repertoire of offensive shots to put that natural ability to use. She has the tools to fight for a starting position, too.” Incoming freshman Kylee Hervey (Indianapolis, Ind.) could see action as an outside hitter or opposite. “We were thrilled to see Kylee’s development during the club season and have confidence that she will have a huge impact on our program earlier than we even expected.”
