kızılay city square and its neighborhood urban design competition jury special prize* 2009
The main aim of the project is to create a new magnetic attraction point at the city centre by improving the pedestrian routes, usages and to connect the unconnected pedestrian routes. Kızılay square’s new attitude will be to connect and enable people from different social backgrounds to interact. According to the project the new Kızılay square will improve the social, cultural and ecological quality of Ankara and create a new role model for the capital city. In the project Güven Park and the square are designed as a whole. In the present situation, the monument acts as a division between Kızılay square and the park. What is suggested in the project is to merge them and to create a buffer zone - a new, less formal- square. This square hosts to activities which are more informal and turns the monument into less of a border. The square consists of small topographic differences which enable a variety of activities such as surfaces for lying down, sitting, playing etc. The citizens’ appreciation of the existing symbolic and historical elements in the square is augumented.
the timeline of development several squares of kızılay
One of the prior aims of the project is to connect the squares of variable sizes to the main Kızılay square and to each other. In order to create a centre which is designed for pedestrians, the roads are isolated by the cycling routes and trees. Through this design the pavements are turned into pedestrian corridors. The pedestrian axis -which is designed among the Güvenpark- connects all of the pedestrian corridors to each other.
transformation of square greean areas
The smooth transition between the square and the park can be read through the typology as well. The pedestrian axis which passes through the g端venpark connects all of the pedestrian routes. This axis enables different activities and it empowers the relationship of city life and the square. pedestrian axis in the park
The mediatech is designed to improve the interaction of Anakara citizens with contemporary technologies, art and culture. The information nodes in the squares and the parks of K覺z覺lay are also designed as extensions of the mediatech. It is foreseen that these units for reaching the city life information will spread all around the capital and have a social effect. Due to its location the mediatech will empower the usage of underground and turn it into a livelier 24 hour active area. small info units

A design which includes streets that the bazaar can diffuse in semi-spontaneously and that has useful open-air areas that can be used by İstanbulians. Project also includes upgrading additional elements for which answer to the necessities of the area.
The main aim of the project is to maintain the street pattern that is seen in kad覺k繹y to the site and to turn the site into a multi-usage area by uniting housing, mediatek, cinema and workshop places. The areas apart from the recreation areas and building sites include functions like: child playing sites, Skate Park, cafes, picnic areas, gardens, hobby gardens, open-air cinemas e.t.c. These functions are supported by units that provide vertical circulation. The range that the bazaar diffuses is defined by the ground differentiation and the density of the additional units that are essential to bazaar.

elements of the project
The additional units define the usage of the surroundings and improve the usage of the open air areas. Around the picnic areas there are units which provide hygiene, waste disposal and storage whereas the units which are around the bicycle road have bicycle rack. These units serve to bazaar by services such as clean water, dirty water, waste disposal and storage. The additional units, which are made to sustain the usage of the bazaar, as essential as the main units to the project. By considering the utilization density; there is a car park and a storage that can be used by the sellers in the market and the residence owners.

%90 of the buildings of the district are in bad condition. Safety, neglection, health conditions are making fenerians life harder, lack of renevation of the buildings are cousing health and safety problems. Having a sizeable young population, narrow streets preventing cars from entering and increasing eye contact between neigbours, close relations among neigbours are some of the potentials of the district. Project is developed arround the analisis of the district, based on the potentials of the place, living types, nececities and relationships. Neigbourhood relations, the haliรง view and the topografic differences are the main determinatives of the project. Inhabiting modules of Fener Housing are defined by the characteristics of the families and their life style.

The modules are situated according to create the void spaces as shared terraces. Cirrculation is one of main elements which provides encounter of the inhabitants. Neigbourhood relations with the other side of the street is supported by the mostly transparent facades and terraces of the building. The library, atalier and a small market increases the interaction of inhabitants of fener and the housing. materiality poured concrete shaped by framework

700 houses 200 commercial units (approximately)
400 houses 2 commercial units (approximately)
500 houses 200 commercial units
Eventhough it has an active relationhip with its surroundings and the streets; the high density turns the urban housing site into an unhealthy and insecure area.
Percantage of the green land per person is high but the units relationship with eachother or streets are week. It has a week, insecure urban housing pattern.
Project suggests a living, secure area which encourages usage of street life. It suggests an open courtyard urban pattern.
Typology of the housing units integrated with offices.
2 different possible usages of the housing units considering the courtyard and the street.
The competition project funded by the goverment aims to receive new-creative ideas from young architects and urban planners to design a big new development area called BaĹ&#x;akĹ&#x;ehir. I joined the project with two graduate architects, an urbanplanner and a landscape architect.

the re-routing of the current roads layers of settlement and usage
The existing roads/highways were very dominant in the area. Considering the human flow as one of the most important features of the project, in some points these highways are taken underground and pedestrian bridges are being built.
There are three centers (nucleus, eco-brace and techne). They are all connected by a main axis. which opens up into squares along its length. The project includes a certain amount of residences, office blocks, a school, parks, shopping areas, a technology center and an eco-living center which unites the residents and creates a sub-center in the city.
Nucleus has a big cultural center with multi-usage open areas in the square.
The transformation of current out-of-use structure for creating a safe living ambiance.
A large botanic park and hobby gardens are included in the project considering the inhabitants of the area.
fibrous structures 07
parametric design workshop in collaboration with AA London students 2007
Fibrous Structures is the workshop collaboration between AA and ITU students. Over several sessions, fibrous structures are explored through various techniques. On one hand, the digital parametric models enable the exploration of multiple configurations while on the other hand, testing both the digital and the physical provides more and more precise constraints contributing to the design evolution.
Being the horizontal weaving group, for the application of these models we used ropes for realising the parametric design of the pavilion. After weaving the ropes according to the design, we dipped them into plaster and concrete.

i.t.u. vertical design studio stationary unit design competition one of the first awards* 2005 Diffusewall is a stationary unit which interacts with the users. The moving modules in the facade are not only providing various versions of the facade but also giving information about the most fashionable goods of the day. The modules move forward reacting to the customer’s interest. That way the facade is constantly changing throughout the day. The Project consists of three layers; two facades and the interior. This sandwich form of the unit provides two faces which interact with the user.
raısıng unıts 03 i.t.u. design studio by Doç. Dr. Meltem Aksoy designing for a transportation hub 2003
Located in one of the most important transport hubs [Beşiktaş] on the Bosporus coast, the project aims to give additional usages to the site. Beşiktaş square, just along the coast, hosts Istanbulians while they are waiting for the ferry or the bus to arrive. According to the project, there are three different zones with different units. There is a route for each zone which is provided by a permanent wooden structure that continues along the route and transforms into one of the units.
zone 1 [Along the coast] The wooden pathway that goes through zone1 turns into folded units for sitting laying down
watching the sunset and the sea.
zone 2 [In the centre of Beşiktaş square] There are video exibition units by the transformation of the wooden stucture
which are formed according to the ergonomic human shape.
The third part of the site is the closest part to the road. Some of the interactive information panels are located facing the road, aiming to attract the istanbulians who use Beşiktaş as a transit hub.
the pavillion is the main unit of the project. At the end of the pathway route there is a pavilion which is formed by the curved plywood pathway. The pavilion provides a workshop, exibition area and stairs which can be used for sitting and watching the sea.

A garment is public as much as it is private... It is public as long as it is seen by others who interperate it in their own way... Are these perceptions focused on the garment or on the person who is wearing it?.. Can a dress have its own identity? Must a dress have an owner? Hide-in is a garment which can be public and private at the same time. The person who is wearing it can suddenly disappear; as the owner disappears, the garment becomes a public object which interacts with other people.

Fourhunderedseconds is an event in which 14 designers present their projects in 6 minutes and 40 seconds (400 sec). The presentation format is derived from Pecha Kucha. In a saturated one and a half hour, you get a sample of the full spectrum of Istanbul’s rich creative culture. A common ground for architects, designers, artists, culture producers and other creative individuals to meet and exchange ideas. Since 2005 we have organised 5 very successful 400seconds events. Each event has taken place at a different venue. While choosing the works to be presented, we consider a multidisplinary balance as the most important factor.
A r c h i t e c t u r a l B a t t l e s 4 groups of architecture students are making projects on a certain theme in 45 minutes. Creation, presentation and jury stages, altogether are to be completed within 60 minutes. The computers are connected to the projector and the whole design process is viewed by the audience. These battles aim to encourage creativity in an interactive ambiance. Until now difuzyon has organised 3 architectural battles. All of them were in the architecture faculties of various universities. A jury of teachers and research assistants select the winning project.
B l a n k C a r t r i d g e A gathering of architecture students and professors to discuss a subject that concerns architecture and design. So far two «kurusıkı» event has taken place: the themes were «pink project» and «gentrification of tarlabaşı site.
