I
t has only been two years since 2019, but it feels like we have experienced a time jump that nullified one of them. Yet, we have lived through both 2020 and 2021, albeit for most of the time without certainties and above all without making plans and with only limited
visibility of the future, including the immediate future. Such lack of planning, together with the fluctuation of raw material prices, the demand for just-in-time rather than just-in-case production, the crisis in maritime transport with the shortage of containers and skyrocketing container prices, and the spread of Industry 4.0, is reinforcing a trend that had already emerged before the pandemic: that of re-shoring, i.e. the return to local manufacturing, in which companies enhance the value of their country (or continent) of origin by bringing back to it economic activities that had been transferred outside its borders. The continuing pandemic and macroeconomic instability are changing the pattern of the global value chain. This is the opposite of delocalisation – going local instead of going global. “According to experts at A.T. Kearney, one of the world’s leading consultancy firms, the digital revolution is fostering re-shoring. Companies that want to reach the highest technological levels do not need cheap labour specialising in single operations (essential elements of assembly lines), but they rather look for qualified and competent personnel […]. It is about bringing back the highest value-added productions, focusing on quality and not quantity, while continuing to work for the whole world.1” This editor’s letter, which is too brief to go into such vast topics destined to affect the whole world’s economy, is only intended to provide some food for thought. 2022 is fast approaching. It is impossible to make predictions, because there are still too many elements in play to determine what it will be like in terms of economy and if the positive parameters recorded since the beginning of the summer will be confirmed. Going back to the reality of this year-end issue of ipcm®_Protective Coatings, the reports and articles you will find in it makes it one of the most important and rich in content of the year 2021. It features a comprehensive special about protective technologies for bridges and infrastructures with plenty of technical hints to design the measures for corrosion prevention in multiphase and extensive projects as the design and construction of bridges and highways are. The new rust preventative launched by Cortec saves time and reduces the use of additional materials.
C
ortec has announced that it has recently developed the new ready to use rust preventative VpCI®-277.
Specifically designed to preserve metals during storage and transportation, the product combines film-forming additives with Vapour phase Corrosion Inhibitors in order to provide multi-metal corrosion protection. It can provide corrosion protection for up to two years of indoor storage or during shipments when combined with VpCI packaging materials, leaving a dry and non-tacky film on the metal surface. Cortec’s new solution contains a biobased corrosion inhibitor in a non-flammable and low VOC solvent carrier, so it can assist for example automotive manufacturers that need rust preventatives with drier films and low VOCs to meet their solvent-based specifications. The rust preventative VpCI-277 is also suitable for robotic assembly of precision components

which require tight tolerances, helping to maintain a clean preservation process through the absence of oily residue. Moreover, it does not contain chlorinated compounds, chromates or nitrites. It can be applied by spray or dip and left on metal parts during further processing or shipment, not requiring removal. Usually, rust preventatives need to be applied and removed several times because the metals risk flash corrosion when sitting in temporary storage. Furthermore, the parts have to be washed before entering the next phase of the manufacturing process. VpCI-277 allows to streamline processes by eliminating steps, improving tact time and reducing the use of additional materials and cost. VpCI®-277 conforms to ASTM D1748 (Humidity), ASTM D1735 (Water Fog), MIL-C-83993 (Water Displacement), and NACE RP0487-2000 (Selection of Rust Preventives) standard test methods.

From the outset, the difficulties associated with the impossibility of visually inspecting the steel cables inside the concrete-coated tie rods were stressed by several parties. However, in spite of this difficulty, the designer himself reiterated the need for a total retrofitting work, even in the years following his first reports on the viaduct’s state of deterioration. In 1981, he wrote about the tied rods, warning of the “need for a close, ‘hands-on’ check of the steel by X-ray inspection.” During one of the most extensive maintenance operations on one of the tie rods on the north side of pylon 11, carried out in 1992 with the addition of external cables, a construction defect was detected that could affect the tightness of the tie rods themselves. In normal colour shade development, a spectrophotometer can be used to provide a generic assessment of the correctness of the colour. In the development of a unique gold paint however, there are challenges. “The shade of this type of paint cannot be measured because no objective shade comparison can be found for it. The shade has been created purely “by sight”, Karkola clarifies. Another special challenge was connected with the long duration of the project – Teknos joined the project in 2014, and the first part of painting the bridge’s gold layer took place in 2020, the finishing painting in 2021. In terms of production, this means making several different paint batches over the years, from the test paints to the final, larger paint delivery. “Adjusting the shade to the correct one and maintaining the same quality from one batch to another has required more from product development and also from production. In practice, all

manufactured batches have been personally approved with regard to the shade,” Karkola explains.
Golden Bridge is a central landmark After its completion, the Golden Bridge is one of the most visible parts of Slussen’s massive renovation. “The selected colour is very special, as it should be for such a significant bridge in its historic environment. Gold gives the bridge its own identity, as a colour it is very symbolic. People of Stockholm have understood this and embraced the bridge,” Spencer says happily. “The golden bridge acts as the central point of the capital.” “This project was an excellent cooperation experience with Teknos. The fact that the Teknos R&D team went the extra mile to achieve the end product and that we were able to utilize the expertise of Teknos professionals was fantastic and something entirely new,” Charlotte de Ferry Foster says. It is an extremely efficient dry method of protecting metals within an enclosed space by simply dosing MCI®-309 powder into the void. Repairing poor road surfaces and bridges takes time, and long road repairs interrupt and slow down traffic for months. The time required for repair work was significantly reduced with polyurea as waterproofing speeded up the work.

Another Successful Event from the Leaders of the Energy Industry EMC Conference and Exhibition, the event dedicated to the Eastern Mediterranean Energy Industry, was successfully completed in last November.

he Eastern Mediterranean Energy Conference and Exhibition or EMC, was held this year over the 10th-12th of November in Nicosia,
Cyprus. The exhibition welcomed companies operating in the following sectors: Oil&Gas, Midstream and Shipping, Renewables (hydro, solar, wind, geothermal and biomass) and Power, Natural Gas, Energy Transition (hydrogen, biofuels and e-fuel, CCUS). After three days of unmissable discussions, we now know we can stay committed to delivering a cleaner energy future that is equitable and sustainable. EMC 2021 had support from the entire oil & gas and energy value chain, including Ministers from the region. H.E.
