Each of us makes gifts to various areas within our hospitals for very personal reasons. Those personal reasons may vary, but the result of our donors’ generosity is the same – world class healthcare for our patients and families. In this Annual Report, you will see a list of our partners in success — our donors. Line by line, page after page, they collectively demonstrate a commitment to improving the health of our community. Our supporters value what Iowa Health does, and appreciate that we do it with compassion and a caring spirit. Each donor’s name in this report carries a decidedly individual story about what inspired each to give. We have chosen to highlight a few of those individuals in hopes that you will be reminded about what motivated you to give, or if you didn’t make a gift last year, perhaps you will be inspired to do so in the future. Gifts to the Iowa Health Foundation in 2010 supported a wide array of programs and services as varied as the reasons why people make these gifts. Philanthropy knows no boundaries, and we want our donors to know that their gifts impacted our patients and families in many ways. For example, donors supported programs and services such as compassion funds to help families meet daily needs while coping with a medical event; education classes to manage health conditions; community outreach to teach about wellness and injury prevention; and support groups to facilitate connections with others to help heal the body and the mind. Still others gave generously to help us treat our patients with the best trained physicians, nurses and staff with the most advanced technologies. We are proud to be one of the first in the Midwest to provide new technology, through philanthropic dollars, for our patients through the acquisition of the TrueBeam STx system.

“I give because philanthropy truly makes a difference in the care we provide for our patients and their families each and every day.”

Dennis W. Linderbaum

President, Iowa Health Foundation

Helen Johnson included Blank Children’s Hospital in her will in 1988.

This winter, the first child will be treated at the new Child Development Center at Blank Children’s Hospital.

Helen loved children. Tragically, her husband Newell lost his first family when his wife and unborn child were killed in a car accident and four months later his son died of a serious illness. The Johnsons wanted to help children and their bequest provided a way for them to do good from a tragic loss.

Thanks to Helen and Newell’s bequest the new Child Development Center will not only be built, the center will have an endowment to help cover the annual revenue shortfall all child development centers face.

We are honored to report that, in 2010, more than 7,500 donors gave nearly $7.7 million in current and mature gifts to the Iowa Health Foundation. This incredible outpouring of support helped the entire Iowa Health – Des Moines family provide the best possible healthcare to thousands of patients and their families each and every day of the year. Thank you for your very thoughtful and generous gifts. The future remains bright for us and we look forward to continuing to meet the healthcare needs of our community. On behalf of the Iowa Health Foundation Board of Directors, please accept our appreciation for your generous support of the Iowa Health – Des Moines family.

Leadership & Vision

Mildred Corey 1915 – 2009

Mildred & Arthur Corey included John Stoddard Cancer Center in their estate. With this gift they helped to provide key programs and services to those we have the privilege to serve at a time when it is needed most. It is often the case that we are not aware that we are included in an estate or a will, and therefore do not have the opportunity to thank people while they are alive. Such was the case with Mr. & Mrs. Corey. We did not have an opportunity to know Mr. & Mrs. Corey, but we celebrate them and the difference they made through their gift to John Stoddard.

Thomas Eggleston 1930 – 2010

Tom & his wife Barb, of Cedar Rapids, have been long time friends and supporters of Blank Children’s Hospital. That friendship started when Dr. Lee Forrest Hill and Dr. William Hornaday cared for their young daughter Trudy. Trudy passed away in 1968 at age 8 of kidney disease. Tom was very active not only supporting Blank Children’s but also supporting Camp Courageous. He was a bundle of unstoppable energy and seldom missed Blank or Foundation events. Barb continues the giving tradition that they started together!

Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons, P.C. Last year, Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons (DMOS) announced a remarkable gift to our community — $1 million in support of the newly opened Methodist West Hospital and its state-of-the-art Orthopaedic Center of Excellence. This represents the largest gift that DMOS has ever made in its history. How healthcare is delivered needs to grow and change as the population changes. One of the most significant changes in recent times is that our aging population is living longer and lead much more active lives. In response to this change, Iowa Health and DMOS, the leading provider in the care of diseases and injuries to bones, joints, muscles and tendons in Iowa, created a unique partnership which resulted in the Orthopaedic Center of Excellence at Methodist West Hospital. This continues a tradition of partnerships between DMOS and Iowa Health that dates back to 1955. The goal of this partnership was to make joint replacements safer, more efficient, and more comfortable in order to help patients recover easier and faster so they can return to their daily activities. In order to accomplish this goal, every member of the team from the surgeons to the nurses examined each step in the process and collaboratively explored the ways to accomplish the goals. “Because of our long history of collaboration with Iowa Health, DMOS was proud to support Methodist West with this gift of $1 million. The DMOS surgeons look forward to working with Iowa Health for another 50 years and striving to provide the highest quality healthcare achievable for our community.”

David A. Vittetoe, M.D. Chair of the Board of Directors, Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons, P.C.

In addition to this support of Methodist West Hospital, DMOS has a 27-year history of supporting the rest of the Iowa Health family. A few examples of their support include the new Emergency Department at Iowa Lutheran, Blank Children’s Hospital’s Festival of Trees & Lights, the Westerberg Celebration for Iowa Lutheran, the Rally Against Cancer for John Stoddard Cancer Center, and the campaign to build Taylor House Hospice. What a wonderful record of support for the community, and the patients and the families that DMOS serves. 54

TrueBeam STx John Stoddard Cancer Center at Iowa Methodist Medical Center is continuing to lead the way for cancer care in the Midwest by becoming one of only a few cancer centers in the nation — and one of only a handful in the world — to acquire an innovative new piece of technology. Charitable gifts were integral in bringing this technology to John Stoddard Cancer Center. A significant portion of the funds from John and Lilyan Stoddard’s estate gifts were used to establish a Board Designated fund to support critical needs of the cancer center in the future. Mr. Stoddard was fascinated by technology and to support this project continues the legacy that he established when he made his gift. From the earnings of his endowment $1.5 million was used towards the purchase of the TrueBeam and an additional $250,000 was used to renovate the vault in which this new equipment will be used. In addition, approximately $17,000 from the 2011 Rally Against Cancer was dedicated towards this project along with contributions from individuals. The TrueBeam™ STx system from Varian Medical Systems was engineered to perform sophisticated radiosurgery procedures with pinpoint accuracy. It works by choreographing highly sophisticated systems — imaging, beam delivery and motion management — and makes it possible to deliver treatments quickly while monitoring and compensating for tumor motion. There are currently only a handful of cancer centers in the world using the TrueBeam STx system. This revolutionary new technology provides patients with a radically different approach to treating cancer. “TrueBeam opens the door to many new possibilities for Stoddard cancer patients,” said Dr. Robert Goebel, medical director of Radiation Oncology. “TrueBeam gives us a wide range of new capabilities and truly is a ground-breaking advancement in cancer care.” This technology opens up treatment options for some of the most complex cancers in areas such as the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate. The TrueBeam STx system can deliver treatments 2.4 to 4 times faster with a dose delivery rate of up to 2,400 monitor units per minute — double the output of most other radiosurgery systems. By bringing this revolutionary technology to John Stoddard Cancer Center, our patients and families will not have to travel hours away to receive care that was previously not available in Iowa. They can stay close to home, which greatly reduces the cost and anxiety of having to travel for treatments.

Blank Children’s Developmental Center Approximately 17 percent of all children born in the United States have a developmental or behavioral disability, such as autism, muscular dystrophy, traumatic injury or cerebral palsy. Of these children, less than half are properly diagnosed before the age of 5, at which time they face significant delays in cognitive, social and physical development. Unfortunately, these delays have lifelong ramifications for a child, limiting his or her potential and quality of life. We estimate that every year 5,000 to 6,000 Iowa children need services to provide therapy for these disabilities. Currently, there is not a center in Iowa with the type of coordinated and comprehensive services that families need. The goal of the Blank Children’s Developmental Center is to provide early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment for children with developmental disabilities. The specially trained multidisciplinary team, which will include psychologists, physiatrist, child development specialist, geneticist, nurse practitioners and therapists, will develop a unique comprehensive program for each child. The goal will be to provide every child with the opportunity to receive care early in their development to maximize his or her potential. The addition of the developmental center will build on the nationally recognized programs at Blank Children’s Hospital and enhance the continuum of care we provide to all children. “This is one of the best things we have done for children in decades.” —David Stark, President and COO of Blank Children’s Hospital

The Anna Blank Building, which is located next to Blank Children’s Hospital and currently vacant, is being renovated to be the new home for the center at a cost of $2.9 million. This renovation will be 100 percent funded by philanthropic gifts. We have received early grants from Variety –The Children’s Charity and a Legacy Grant from Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. Endowment funds are needed to help sustain the center because we expect it to operate at a deficit. A substantial endowment is already in place thanks to a number of significant gifts from longtime donors. Additional endowment funds are needed to fully fund the planned operational deficit. The endowment will provide funding to sustain these invaluable services and establish a solid financial foundation for future growth. Endowed programs are also integral to the recruitment and retention of highly skilled physicians and staff.

The Fred Maytag Family Foundation Jane was having seizures and was also pregnant with their fourth son. Dave was terrified as he brought his 48-year-old wife, Jane, to the Emergency Department at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Within an hour of their arrival, their baby was delivered by C-section, and Dave notified their three sons (two of which were in college and one in high school) that Jane suffered a stroke along with additional complications that required her to be on life support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Dave and his family were completely overwhelmed. As the ICU team was focused on helping Jane, the ICU/CCU social worker was focused on taking care of Dave and his family. The social worker provided the emotional support to help them process everything that had happened, adjust to all of the changes that had occurred in their lives, and organize care for the baby. She also facilitated visits between Jane and her newborn baby. The visits were important to help with bonding although Jane was unconscious. After a few weeks in the hospital, Jane went home to be with Dave and their, now, four sons. Thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Ellen Maytag Madsen and The Fred Maytag Family Foundation, the ICU/CCU Social Worker Program is available on nights and weekends. Their total commitments exceed more than $1.4 million. For the past 25 years, The Fred Maytag Family Foundation has provided ongoing support to ensure that these key members of the team are available every day to ensure families have the support when it’s needed most. Mrs. Madsen chose to support this program because it was an important service needed by patients and their families. Her sons, Fritz and Fred, through The Fred Maytag Family Foundation, have continued their mother’s legacy by supporting this program in her honor. The role of the ICU/CCU Social Worker is to assist the families of patients. Their support includes providing information, education, and advocacy, as well as discussing discharge options or processing endof-life issues. In addition, the social workers help to serve as a liaison between the medical team and the family, ensuring that everyone involved in the patient’s care understands. Without philanthropy, patients would not have access to this vital program. 114

A Legacy That Helps Others...Forever!

...some of the most tender times of my family’s life have occurred at Lutheran. 312

Would you like to extend your values by making a gift to the Iowa Health Foundation or one of our hospitals that will last indefinitely? Consider establishing an endowment. It’s a powerful extension of your values and a wonderful way to show your support. To create an endowment, you make a gift that we carefully invest. Then, each year a portion of the investment return is used to meet your charitable goals. The rest of the gift remains invested to keep it healthy and growing far into the future. Most often essential programs with little or inadequate reimbursement require and are supported by endowments. Currently Iowa Health Foundation manages endowments that support such programs as: Child Life at Blank Children’s Hospital, free counseling services at John Stoddard Cancer Center, medical and nursing education at Iowa Health – Des Moines, the new Developmental Center at Blank Children’s Hospital, the ICU/CCU at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, continuing education at Iowa Lutheran Hospital and many more critical programs. 33

With heritage preceding the hospital building itself, the ILH Auxiliary has delivered countless hours of caring service, and hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the growth and revitalization of Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Beginning as the Iowa Lutheran Hospital Society, First Lutheran Church women gathered to help raise funds to build a new hospital on the city’s east side. Early on, sewing projects including blankets, towels and dressings for patients occupied the society. In addition to fund raising, these projects were the main undertakings of Auxilians until the late 1950s. At that time, there appeared the need for help distributing flowers to patients. Setting the trend for the future, a “volunteer services” group gave assistance. Garbed in cheery red smocks that remain characteristic today, the number of volunteers increased to serve the need for additional services throughout the hospital. Hosting and escorting patients, establishing a snack bar and gift shop, creating a shopping cart and coffee cart for patients and visitors – wherever the need, Auxilians and volunteers were at hand. Expanding to include men and teens in the 1960s, the ILH Auxiliary turned to the community, and began expanding ILH services throughout the city and beyond. Through programs including the TeleCare Program, Not New Shop, Pediatric Orientation Program and Infant & Toddler Seat Loaner Programs, the unselfish dedication to neighbors and friends of Iowa Lutheran Hospital was the Auxiliary’s main intent. The projects, services, equipment, fund raising events, patient assistance and employee support provided by the Auxiliary is lengthy. Each year, the ILH Auxiliary generously funds nursing scholarships and gives over $100,000 to the hospital, financing building and remodeling, adding equipment, providing patient assistance and countless other essential programs and services. Auxiliary members have enthusiastically shaped the image of Iowa Lutheran Hospital over the years. This group of dedicated people, now over 1,000 members strong, clearly exemplifies an outstanding spirit of commitment and generosity. “We’ve cared about the hospital for 100 years, and we hope to go on caring for 100 more,” says Joanne Mahaffey, auxiliary president at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. 134

Marian’s Story Marian Vaatveit had a more than seven decade relationship with the Iowa Health – Des Moines family, dating back to her sister Virginia Thompson’s work as an anesthesiologist at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in 1940. Over the years, Marian regularly attended the Star Donor Event, the Principal Charity Classic, and other events sponsored by the Iowa Health Foundation. Nearly three decades ago, Marian Vaatveit decided Blank Children’s Hospital and Iowa Health Foundation would receive a substantial bequest from her estate. Marian offered some suggestions on how her gift could be used, but left the ultimate decision up to hospital leaders. Marian’s bequest to Blank Children’s Hospital will be in excess of $1 million. Throughout her years in supporting the programs and services of Blank Children’s Hospital, one thing was clear: Marian loved children. And that love will live on as her gift will provide a full third of the funding for the establishment of the new Developmental Center. Currently, there is no center in Iowa that provides coordinated and comprehensive services for families affected by developmental or behavioral disability such as autism, muscular dystrophy, traumatic injury or cerebral palsy. Marian’s bequest will help change that. Marian’s friends and family are thrilled that Marian’s bequest is going to have such an immediate impact on the health of children. She was an elementary school teacher and remained involved as a school volunteer after retirement. Marian’s lifelong love of children will continue forever through the new developmental center. Marian’s gift is not only her personal legacy, it is an inspiration to others in how their own giving could make a difference in the lives of children. Each gift to Blank Children’s Hospital is a blessing that speaks to the impact our providers and staff members have on patients and families in need. From the Blank family’s initial gift that helped establish the hospital, to the donations we receive on a daily basis, we are humbled to be seen as worthy of charitable support.

Special thanks to our employee donors for jumping “All Aboard” in 2010! 30 3

Rally Against Cancer

Westerberg

The 2010 Rally Against Cancer was held January 30th. More than 630 attended the fun-filled evening, raising more than $150,000 to support John Stoddard Cancer Center.

The 2010 Iowa Lutheran Hospital Westerberg event was our 19th annual celebration. More than $78,000 was raised in support for Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Proceeds benefited the “I Love ILH” Capital Improvements Fund.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, the featured speaker was the one and only, Coach Mike Ditka. Coach Ditka is one of the true greats in the history of football. Not only did he play the game for 12 years, but he also went on to an illustrious 14-year coaching career which included winning the Super Bowl. In addition, following the live auctions, Des Moines popular dueling pianos, Pianopalooza, finished off the evening.

The Westerberg Celebration is a great opportunity for the entire Lutheran family to celebrate as one. We are always pleased to have support at Westerberg from physicians, administration, employees, nurse alumni, volunteers, Auxiliary members, community friends and our business partners.

The Rally Against Cancer raises funds to help patients and families of the John Stoddard Cancer Center. The 2009 funds were used for the expansion and continued support of the John Stoddard Cancer Care Coordinator Program. This program is provided at no charge to patients and is supported through philanthropy. These funds will help the John Stoddard Cancer Center continue to lead the way in cancer care for central Iowa.

In addition, we honor a philanthropist of the year. The Coskery Award is given each year to an individual or organization who has supported Iowa Lutheran Hospital through their ongoing financial gifts. In 2010, the award was presented to the Iowa Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary in honor of their 100th Anniversary. Members have enthusiastically shaped the image of Iowa Lutheran Hospital over the years. This group of dedicated people, now over 1,000 members strong, clearly exemplifies an outstanding spirit of commitment and generosity.

Mark your calendars today and plan to join us for the 2012 Rally Against Cancer on January 28 at the Hy-Vee Conference Center.

The 2011 Westerberg Celebration was held on April 28 at the Marriott Downtown as we honor and celebrate Dr. Tim and Jane Hart.

Hula for Hospice

Festival of Trees

The Des Moines Botanical Center was transformed into a tropical paradise for the third annual Hula for Hospice on November 13, filled with live music provided by Soca Jukebox, island-inspired drinks and dinner.

The 27th Annual Blank Children’s Hospital Festival of Trees and Lights was a huge success in 2010. More than $400,000 was raised in support of Child Life and the Center for Advocacy and Outreach. A special thank you to Iowa Realty, who has continued to support us at the presenting sponsor level for the past five years.

More than 120 people attended and had a great time supporting Iowa Health Hospice. All proceeds from the event and raffles support the work of the Iowa Health Hospice Good Samaritan Fund, which provides financial assistance to patients at Taylor House and in their homes. Through generous gifts to this fund, no one is turned away from receiving our care and given the dignity they deserve in their dying days. During the event, Iowa Health Hospice honored Nick Goldsmith, 18, for his volunteer work with the organization by naming a new $500 annual scholarship for him. The scholarship will be open to any student who volunteers with Iowa Health Hospice. The evening concluded with stories of Hospice Hope and the raffle drawings.

Keep an eye out for more information on the Fourth Annual Hula for Hospice.

We could not have had such a successful event without Honorary Chairs, Jody and Stan Reynolds; the planning committee; tree decorators; and the hundreds of volunteers who generously donated their time and talents. The Gala committee worked hard to secure unique auction items that raised nearly $86,000. This would not be possible without the individuals and businesses who donated items for our auction. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. The trees are decorated each year by dozens of volunteer decorators. Their creativity shines through each year and 2010 was no different. From trees decorated through the eyes of children to those decorated like a snowman—visitors and underwriters never leave disappointed. Mark your calendars for November 22-27, 2011 for the 28th year of Festival of Trees and Lights.

“How do all of these people afford all of the extra costs?” was the question that Karl and Diane talked about during Karl’s battle against Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. While it was not easy, they felt very fortunate to be able to afford all of the extra costs beyond what insurance would pay. On February 23, 2010, Diane lost her best friend and her husband. To honor his life, Diane organized the Karl & Friends Golf Tournament, raising $3,200 to establish the John Stoddard Cancer Center Compassion Fund. This fund will offer additional support to patients and families, based on financial need, beyond what the hospital is able to provide, such as gas cards for those that travel far distances and meal cards. We now have an answer to Karl’s question.

Child Life means the world to Tyler and the entire Cross family. “I don’t know what I’d do without them,” says Tyler. When Tyler agreed to be featured in a direct mailing to help raise funds for the Child Life program, his commitment didn’t stop at the interview. He grabbed a jar and started collecting change from friends and family members. Tyler was beaming when he presented his donation of $100 to the Child Life Staff at Blank Children’s Hospital. No matter your age, we all can make a difference by giving to causes we believe in. 274

Something had to be done! Carolyn Bradley lost her sister and Kathy Temple lost her best friend, Judy Willis, to colon cancer. There needed to be a celebration that not only honored Judy, but more importantly, that continued the work that Judy did in her life. Combining Judy’s passion for philanthropy and her love of wine, Carolyn and Kathy created the Crush Colon Cancer event. After months of careful planning, family and friends gathered to celebrate Judy and fight cancer. In the first year, the event contributed $7,500 to support the Stoddard Care Coordinator Program. Even after her death, Judy Willis continues to inspire and make a difference in people’s lives.

More than 105 motorcycle riders came to Newton Firefighters first “Fun Run,” benefiting the Blank Children’s Hospital’s Cancer Center. The event raised $20,000. The ride went through four different towns around Newton. At each stop, participants had the opportunity to win door prizes and a raffle. The Fun Run ended at a local business where a silent auction was held. They also announced the lucky winner in a drawing for a 2010 Harley Davidson Road King motorcycle. “I think the thing we are most proud of is the fact that the money went directly to benefit the families of the children receiving treatment at the hospital,” says Local Firefighter Union Secretary-Treasurer Mike Crowe. Plans for another ride are already in the works for 2012.

proceeds from the sale of the cottage were donated to Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Iowa Methodist Medical Center. “I’ve had the chance to listen to their dreams, and now I’ll have the chance to make some of their dreams come true.” While she enjoyed the memories and photos of her family’s lake home until her death, Margaret was thrilled that her gift could provide financial support to Iowa Health family.

Nick Goldsmith remembers the moment he decided to become a hospice volunteer. His mother was telling him a story about a friend who worked at a hospice and how one day, the friend was walking past a patient’s room when the patient cried out to her. “She went into the room, and there was nothing wrong, he only wanted some companionship,” Goldsmith said. “He was dying and didn’t want to be alone, so she sat with him. And I thought to myself, ‘There’s no reason I can’t do that.’” Not only did he start volunteering, but he started a student volunteer program at Dowling Catholic High 22

School. Now other students can earn community service hours volunteering at the Taylor House. When Nick leaves for Notre Dame in the fall, he’ll transfer leadership of the hospice service-learning program to Reed Flood, a Dowling sophomore who has been involved since the inception. “It’s easy to talk about things you can do to help people, but what a lot of teenagers don’t realize is how good it can make you feel inside when you know you’ve really helped someone.” 23
