Insurance Contracts Phil Smayda, CPA PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC Learn the latest developments from FASB and IASB regarding insurance contract standards including targeted changes of the FASB. Topics to be discussed include modeling approaches, financial statement presentation, disclosure requirements and potential impacts on a company’s financial reporting process.

Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA)–Path to Success Margaret Spencer, CRMA, CPCU, CLU, RHU, CPA, CIA, CFE, CIE, MCM Risk & Regulatory Consulting LLC This session will provide an update on recent ORSA developments including regulatory expectations resulting from the NAIC’s conduct of pilot projects, what’s been learned so far, implementation challenges, stress test and modeling considerations, and recently developed NAIC financial examination and financial analyst guidance. Topics will also include an overview of the requirements, such as an enterprise risk management process and the benefits and potential uses of ORSA.

Insurance Company Mergers and Acquisitions John Marra, CPA PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC This state of the industry update on insurance company mergers and acquisitions will cover industry trends, market participants, pre and post-acquisition considerations, common deal issues and the role of due diligence. Tax, actuarial and human resources issues will also be discussed.

U.S. GAAP/IFRS Update Kyle Ten Pas, CPA Alan Kuska, CPA KPMG LLP This session will provide an update on recent developments in U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting matters and international financial reporting standards that could affect the insurance industry. Topics to be discussed include any

new accounting standards issued as well as exposure drafts coming down the pipeline.

11:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Lunch 12:30–1:30 p.m. Leadership 2014 Jeremy Wortman, Ph.D. This session will provide accounting professionals with a current perspective regarding leadership and the practices that drive individual and organizational performance. Participants will learn about their personality type in order to be more aware of their natural talents and motivating needs. This level of self-awareness provides a solid foundation to lead others in an authentic manner that influences themselves and others to greater performance levels. Graham Cook is chair of Homesteaders Life Company in West Des Moines. He joined Homesteaders in 1966, working parttime while attending Drake University. After graduation Graham became a full-time employee. He was elected president in 1995 and chair in 1999. Graham retired as president and CEO in 2014.

Nick Gerhart was appointed insurance commissioner of the state of Iowa beginning Feb. 1, 2013. Nick serves on the NAIC Life and Annuity (A) and the Financial Condition (E) Committee. Prior to being appointed insurance commissioner, Nick worked for Sammons Financial Group as vice president of compliance and regulatory affairs.

Keri Farrell-Kolb is director of compliance for Mark J. Becker & Associates, LLC in Des Moines. Keri’s practice includes state and federal law including the Internal Revenue Code, ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA and health care reform. Since health care reform was passed, Keri has devoted much of her time educating and advising employers on the rules and regulations affecting benefits offered to employees.

Brianne Schoonover is a tax senior manager with Ernst & Young LLP in Des Moines. She focuses primarily on the firm’s midwest area insurance clients. Brianne has 12 years of experience related to planning, provision, and compliance for property/ casualty and life insurance companies, as well as with consolidated returns including life-nonlife operations.

He has over 14 years of experience in the insurance and broader financial services industry. She is active on several industry interested parties groups for NAIC issues, serving as co-chair of the Blanks interested party group. Connie began her career in the insurance industry in 1984 completing statutory filings for both life and property/casualty companies. She was also with the NAIC for nine years.

Jeremy Wortman works in the field of organizational psychology. He is the managing director of talent management and organizational development for GPAC. Prior to his current position, Jeremy served as the director of organizational development for TD Ameritrade where he was responsible for strategic planning and implementation of enterprise-wide talent management solutions.
