Message from the Vice Principal . . . But The Fruit of the Spirit is….Self Control This school year we are focusing on the Fruit of the Spirit. For the months of August and September our focus was on love. During the month of October, our focus is on self control. What is self control? What does it mean to be in control? Self control is the ability to control one's emotions and desires. Pretty simple definition isn’t it? Oh, but how challenging it is to “have self control.” As a parent, I am sure that you would agree with me that teaching self-control skills is so important for the growth of our children. These skills are not only important for today but also important for when our children are older. By learning self-control, our children can learn to make appropriate decisions. Self control will also help them to know how to respond to stressful situations in ways that can yield positive outcomes. So how does one go about teaching these skills? One thing that has helped me throughout my years of parenting is to resist the urge to yell when disciplining my children. It is necessary to be firm and calm when disciplining children. As a parent, it is so important for you to model good self-control. If you're in an irritating situation and your kids are present, always remember that you have an audience watching you. And lastly, I urge you to pray! Pray for God to help you with self control daily. Pray that God will bless you with wisdom and understanding to teach self control to His precious lambs. Blessings, Mr. Overstreet But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

WEEK OF PRAYER: Next week, October 19 – 23, is our Fall Week of Prayer. Parents are welcome to join us as we have worship with Pastor Jerry Wasmer. We will be next door to the school at the Korean SDA church. Grades 5 – 8 will meet at 8:20 – 9:00 a.m., and Pre-K – 4th grade will meet at 9:05 – 9:35 a.m. NEW AFTERCARE HOURS Due to daylight savings time, aftercare hours will be changing. Effective November 6, through March 5, aftercare will be closed at 5:15pm ON FRIDAYS ONLY to reflect the time change for Sabbath observance. Please make arrangements to pick up your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Business Office.

HELP OUR TEACHERS! Many classrooms are being disrupted between 2:45-3:00 p.m. and we need your help. It is our desire for teachers to utilize class time effectively and would like to request that disruptions be kept to a minimum. Also, if you would like to see a teacher we ask that you wait until after dismissal, call or e-mail for an appointment. The FLEC Receptionist is happy to deliver messages, lunches, books and papers to your child. Thank you so much for your cooperation in this matter. SPECIAL THANKS A special thanks to all the hard-working substitute teachers that help keep our school running smoothly when our teachers have to be away. We are blessed with a wonderful group of substitutes that care deeply for our children.

LOWER YOUR CELL PHONE BILL The FLEC Handbook states: “Cell phones must be powered off during school hours: 7:50 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. Monday – Thursday, and 7:50 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Fridays. They must not be visible during class, in the halls, or anywhere on campus during school hours.” There will now be a fine for any cell phone visible during the school day. Students can use school phones with teacher’s permission and parents may leave messages with the front office if they need to reach their student. VOLUNTARY PREKINDERGARTEN We still have several openings in our VPK program. This is a wonderful opportunity for your four year old to experience learning in a Christian school environment. We are one of the few schools that offer a full day VPK program. Please contact the Registrar at 407-862-7688, ext. 221 for more information. STEP-UP SCHOLARSHIP If you haven't already, please stop by the Business Office and sign your check or you will be obligated for the full tuition. Thank You. BILLING Just a friendly reminder: All school bills are due at the end of the month. If you have questions about your charges, please contact the Business Office at 407-862-7688, ext. 226. INTRAMURALS SOCCER GRADES K-3 Teams are posted on the school website. If you have any questions you can contact Mr. Mark Mastrapa at 407-862-7688 ext. 263 or BEAR SIGHTING

We have had a black bear in the woods behind the school. Present policy states that if a bear is sighted on or near campus, administration will be notified immediately. All students’ outside will return to their classrooms/gymnasium/library. Appropriate authorities will be notified. No students will be allowed outside until all is clear.

DISMISSAL Remember school is out at 3:15 pm. Please note that it is disruptive to learning when parents come to the classroom door at 2:50 or 3:00 to get their child. Please be patient and wait till the class is dismissed, you can meet your child as the class leaves the classroom. Thank you for understanding and helping the teachers utilize those last minutes of the day. Choose a Lane - Please remember to be extremely careful and patient when driving on campus. As you turn into the school drive please use the right lane if you are picking up from behind the school (5th through 8th grader riders) and the left lane if you are picking up children in front of the school (Pre-K through 4th grade and multi-grade riders). Remember to be considerate; yield to your neighbor and practice patience. Safety is our number one concern. Rain Dismissal – We continue to tweak our rain dismissal procedure. Our goal is to safely complete dismissal in 30 minutes or less from when the dismissal bell rings. Be assured that your child will not be sent to Aftercare as long as there are still cars in line to pick-up. H1N1 PROTOCOL Parents, please refer to our website for instructions regarding the H1N1 protocol. Remember that your child MUST be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. FLU PREVENTION Flu season has started early this year and with swine flu being such a prominent news story do you ever wonder what FLEC is doing to prevent the flu? Be assured that FLEC Administration and staff takes flu prevention very serious. In consult with several medical experts, FLEC Administration has adopted the following practices: Posters at every sink to show and encourage good hand washing techniques. (Make hand washing fun and effective, sing “Happy Birthday” twice to encourage children to wash for the recommended 20 seconds) Hand sanitizer placed in every classroom and many other convenient places around our school. (CDC recommends a minimum of 60% Ethyl Alcohol in hand sanitizer, FLEC uses hand sanitizer with a 63% Ethyl Alcohol base.) Classrooms are thoroughly cleaned every day. If a student shows signs of the flu that classroom receives a deeper cleaning with an industrial sanitizer that includes every desk, chair, keyboard lunchbox storage area and the nearby bathrooms and drinking fountains. Frequent cleaning, through-out the day our doors, drinking fountains, sinks phones for student use, are wiped down with disinfectant. Flu Shots are encouraged. Stay Healthy Links: HOME & SCHOOL NEWS PARENTS IN PRAYER: We meet every Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. in the Aftercare room next to Chris Carey's office in the library. Please join us as we uplift our students, teachers, staff, administration and our entire FLEC family in prayer! Our locked "Prayer Request Mailbox" is in the gym on the wall in front of Mr. McCoy's office. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13 FALL FESTIVAL IS COMING!! DEVELOPMENT REPORT This week, I heard about a little girl from the lower grades here at FLEC who decided she wanted to give some of her birthday money to the new building fund, so she put her coins in the Wishing Well. What a great spirit! That willingness to share of time and money precious to us will help our plans for the new school building become a reality. Again, thank you to all the children and parents who have shown support by giving coins for the new school building. Remember, we may not be able to give a lot, but we can all do something! Call me if you have any questions or comments, I’d love to hear from you: Dan Tilstra Development Director 269-208-1111 or PRIOR FLEC Flyer Editions Need a prior FLEC Flyer Edition? No problem!
