The FLEC Flyer | December 4, 2009 | Week 16 Message from the Vice Principal . . . We are very busy with school work, homework and back work. Life at school is as demanding as life at home. We are preparing for Christmas programs, parties and presents. Nevertheless, I invite you - if only for a few moments - to turn your minds to the Prince of Peace. Let’s take the time to invite Him into our hearts. He is the only one who can bring peace to our very hectic lives. In the midst of our busyness, let’s pray that our children will see the Prince of Peace through our speech and our actions. I pray that Jesus, the peacemaker, will shine through us in every situation and may His name be praised among our children and through future generations. Rose Thomas Vice Principal of Curriculum "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God." - Matthew 5:9 NKJV

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM We are pleased to announce that this year the Administrative Team has approved the collaboration of the FLEC Music Department for our Christmas Programs. As a result, there will be two music programs instead of three. On Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. grades 4 - 8 choir, beginning and advanced band, and drum corp will present in the FLEC gym. Show your school spirit on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at the Orlando Magic vs. Detroit Pistons game at 7:00 p.m. in the Amway Arena. If you arrive early, you will have the opportunity to hear the FLEC Choir perform the National Anthem in front of 17,000 fans. The first 40 students to sell 10 tickets will get to high-five the Orlando Magic Players. Tickets start from $22 each. This offer is good for students, faculty, staff, family members, friends and neighbors—everybody! When you purchase the tickets through FLEC, Orlando Magic will donate money to our school. This cooperative fundraiser will help the PE Department purchase equipment. For more information, please contact Coach Coco at (407) 862-7688 x 260. NEW AFTERCARE "FRIDAY" HOURS Due to daylight savings time, Aftercare hours will be changing. Effective NOW through March 5, 2010, Aftercare will be closing at 5:15 p.m. ON FRIDAY’S ONLY. Please make arrangements to pick up your child by 5:15 p.m. This prayerful decision was made to allow time to prepare for Sabbath observance. While our goal is to honor this special day of the week that God bestows upon us and to receive His blessings, we recognize that this may present a hardship for some families. Please do not hesitate to contact us if our new hours present a problem for you. As always, we are here for you. FOOD ALLERGIES Over the last two weeks, we have dealt with reactions to food allergies. On behalf of our students with food allergies, we are requesting that if you are hosting, sponsoring a party or sending food to school that you label foods that contain nuts, peanut oil or peanut butter. As a school family, we have put controls in place to continue to make FLEC a safe place for all our students. HELP OUR TEACHERS! Many classrooms are being disrupted between 2:45-3:00 p.m. and we need your help. It is our desire for teachers to utilize class time

effectively and would like to request that disruptions be kept to a minimum. Also, if you would like to see a teacher we ask that you wait until after dismissal, call or e-mail for an appointment. The FLEC Receptionist is happy to deliver messages, lunches, books and papers to your child. Thank you so much for your cooperation in this matter. DISMISSAL Remember school is out at 3:15 pm. Please note that it is disruptive to learning when parents come to the classroom door at 2:50 or 3:00 to get their child. Please be patient and wait till the class is dismissed, you can meet your child as the class leaves the classroom. Thank you for understanding and helping the teachers utilize those last minutes of the day. Choose a Lane - Please remember to be extremely careful and patient when driving on campus. As you turn into the school drive please use the right lane if you are picking up from behind the school (5th through 8th grader riders) and the left lane if you are picking up children in front of the school (Pre-K through 4th grade and multi-grade riders). Remember to be considerate; yield to your neighbor and practice patience. Safety is our number one concern. Rain Dismissal – We continue to tweak our rain dismissal procedure. Our goal is to safely complete dismissal in 30 minutes or less from when the dismissal bell rings. Be assured that your child will not be sent to Aftercare as long as there are still cars in line to pick-up. H1N1 PROTOCOL Parents, please refer to our website for instructions regarding the H1N1 protocol. Remember that your child MUST be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. FLU PREVENTION Flu season has started early this year and with swine flu being such a prominent news story do you ever wonder what FLEC is doing to prevent the flu? Be assured that FLEC Administration and staff takes flu prevention very serious. In consult with several medical experts, FLEC Administration has adopted the following practices: Posters at every sink to show and encourage good hand washing techniques. (Make hand washing fun and effective, sing “Happy Birthday” twice to encourage children to wash for the recommended 20 seconds) Hand sanitizer placed in every classroom and many other convenient places around our school. (CDC recommends a minimum of 60% Ethyl Alcohol in hand sanitizer, FLEC uses hand sanitizer with a 63% Ethyl Alcohol base.) Classrooms are thoroughly cleaned every day. If a student shows signs of the flu that classroom receives a deeper cleaning with an industrial sanitizer that includes every desk, chair, keyboard lunchbox storage area and the nearby bathrooms and drinking fountains. Frequent cleaning, through-out the day our doors, drinking fountains, sinks phones for student use, are wiped down with disinfectant. Flu Shots are encouraged. Stay Healthy Links:

LOWER YOUR CELL PHONE BILL The FLEC Handbook states: “Cell phones must be powered off during school hours: 7:50 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. Monday – Thursday, and 7:50 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Fridays. They must not be visible during class, in the halls, or anywhere on campus during school hours.” There will now be a $25.00 fine for any cell phone visible during the school day. Students can use school phones with teacher’s permission and parents may leave messages with the front office if they need to reach their student.

Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth." Sincerely, Melissa Keller Home and School Association DEVELOPMENT REPORT My office backs up to Linda Batto’s 4th grade classroom. Throughout the day as I am sitting at my desk, or working on my computer, I get the privilege of hearing Linda’s classroom through the wall. What I hear gives me pride and inspiration. I am inspired, because, as you listen to Linda interacting with her students, you just get the feeling she loves what she’s doing. Her voice is strong, confident and full of command, but patient, never sounding upset or exasperated. She sounds truly excited and interested in what she’s talking to the students about. When you go into her classroom, what you see confirms what you have heard. The students seem happy to be there, busy with their work and enjoying the steady “hum” of the classroom. That makes me proud; proud that we have teachers like Linda Batto here at FLEC. This capital campaign will ensure that FLEC will be able to provide safe and adequate classrooms for our current enrollment, and also be prepared to accept the growing number of parents who see the value FLEC offers and want their children here. Please consider what you can do to make this dream a reality. At any time, call Dan Tilstra, 269-208-1111, if you want to give a gift to the building project, have questions, or simply a suggestion that might give us more success CLASSIFIEDS Are you in need of any auto repair or service?
