Message from the Principal . . . Dear Parents, Greetings! What a tremendous day we had at the Fall Festival last Sunday. We have a wonderful community of FLEC family and friends that provide the teamwork necessary to produce such a lovely event. Thank you to all who participated and particularly a heartfelt thank you to Lori Hernandez and Brenda Nee-Jaho. Mrs. Hernandez and Mrs. Nee-Jaho coordinated the festival along with our Home & School volunteers. Our FLEC family is grateful for the love and dedication of our Home & School Association. FLEC was especially blessed this week with our Parent/Teacher conferences. These meetings provide an excellent opportunity to enhance communication between our teachers and parents. We are proud to partner with you in your children’s educational journey. As we close another week, let us continue to give thanks for the blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon our school. “Know then that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God. He keeps His promise and shows His loving-kindness to those who love Him and keep His laws.” Deuteronomy7:9 Blessings in the coming week. Janet Ledesma

PICTURE RETAKE DAY Lifetouch orders were sent home this week. If you are requesting a retake for your student the date is November 11th. Your child’s picture packet must be presented to the photographer at the time of retake. Also please indicate on the packet envelope what you did not like about the picture and the photographer can make sure it is corrected. If your child was absent on the original date of pictures this would be the time to have their picture taken. LOST AND FOUND We presently have a lot of lost and found items here at the school. It is the school’s policy that at the end of each month all lost and found items will be donated to the Forest Lake Church Thrift Store. November 20th will be our next delivery. If you have lost an item, please come and claim that item as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to stop by the office. NEW AFTERCARE HOURS Due to daylight savings time, Aftercare hours will be changing. Effective November 6 through March 5, 2010, Aftercare will be closing at 5:15 p.m. ON FRIDAY’S ONLY. Please make arrangements to pick up your child by 5:15 p.m. This prayerful decision was made to allow time to prepare for Sabbath observance. While our goal is to honor this special day of the week that God bestows upon us and to receive His blessings, we recognize that this may present a hardship for some families. Please do not hesitate to contact us if our new hours present a problem for you. As always, we are here for you. FOOD ALLERGIES Over the last two weeks, we have dealt with reactions to food allergies. On behalf of our students with food allergies, we are requesting that if you are hosting, sponsoring a party or sending food to school that you label foods that contain nuts, peanut oil or peanut butter. As a school family, we have put controls in place to continue to make FLEC a safe place for all our students. HELP OUR TEACHERS! Many classrooms are being disrupted between 2:45-3:00 p.m. and we need your help. It is our desire for teachers to utilize class time effectively and would like to request that disruptions be kept to a minimum. Also, if you would like to see a teacher we ask that you wait until after dismissal, call or e-mail for an appointment. The FLEC Receptionist is happy to deliver messages, lunches, books and papers to your child. Thank you so much for your cooperation in this matter. DISMISSAL Remember school is out at 3:15 pm. Please note that it is disruptive to learning when parents come to the classroom door at 2:50 or 3:00 to get their child. Please be patient and wait till the class is dismissed, you can meet your child as the class leaves the classroom. Thank you for understanding and helping the teachers utilize those last minutes of the day. Choose a Lane - Please remember to be extremely careful and patient when driving on campus. As you turn into the school drive please use the right lane if you are picking up from behind the school (5th through 8th grader riders) and the left lane if you are picking up children in front of the school (Pre-K through 4th grade and multi-grade riders). Remember to be considerate; yield to your neighbor and practice patience. Safety is our number one concern. Rain Dismissal – We continue to tweak our rain dismissal procedure. Our goal is to safely complete dismissal in 30 minutes or less from when the dismissal bell rings. Be assured that your child will not be sent to Aftercare as long as there are still cars in line to pick-up. H1N1 PROTOCOL Parents, please refer to our website for instructions regarding the H1N1 protocol. Remember that your child MUST be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. FLU PREVENTION Flu season has started early this year and with swine flu being such a prominent news story do you ever wonder what FLEC is doing to prevent the flu? Be assured that FLEC Administration and staff takes flu prevention very serious. In consult with several medical experts, FLEC Administration has adopted the following practices: Posters at every sink to show and encourage good hand washing techniques. (Make hand washing fun and effective, sing “Happy

Birthday” twice to encourage children to wash for the recommended 20 seconds) Hand sanitizer placed in every classroom and many other convenient places around our school. (CDC recommends a minimum of 60% Ethyl Alcohol in hand sanitizer, FLEC uses hand sanitizer with a 63% Ethyl Alcohol base.) Classrooms are thoroughly cleaned every day. If a student shows signs of the flu that classroom receives a deeper cleaning with an industrial sanitizer that includes every desk, chair, keyboard lunchbox storage area and the nearby bathrooms and drinking fountains. Frequent cleaning, through-out the day our doors, drinking fountains, sinks phones for student use, are wiped down with disinfectant. Flu Shots are encouraged. LOWER YOUR CELL PHONE BILL The FLEC Handbook states: “Cell phones must be powered off during school hours: 7:50 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. Monday – Thursday, and 7:50 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Fridays. They must not be visible during class, in the halls, or anywhere on campus during school hours.” There will now be a fine for any cell phone visible during the school day. Students can use school phones with teacher’s permission and parents may leave messages with the front office if they need to reach their student.

these wonderful family events if it wasn’t for all of you giving of your time and talents. Thank you for all that you do! Sincerely, Melissa Keller Home and School Association DEVELOPMENT REPORT SQUARE FOOT CAMPAIGN UPDATE Thank you to those of you who sent in your list with 5 names with 5 phone numbers and 5 addresses! Your students will be receiving a prize today for participating. (If you did not yet turn in your 5 names, you can still participate and support the campaign, but the prizes were for Thursday only.) Remember, these are names of potential participants in the campaign – people who might consider sponsoring 1 square foot of the New Classroom Building at $100/square foot – they don’t have to give to be included on the list and for the student to get the prize on Thursday. Also, please note: these names will be used only for this campaign. We will not save their names and send them other things either for fundraising or from the school. All the names that your students put on the list will have a letter sent to them asking if they would consider sponsoring 1 or more square feet of the New Building. We will be calling them ahead of time to let them know a letter is coming. Let’s all get behind this effort to raise $100,000 for the New Building. If we all do a little bit, we can accomplish a lot! At any time, call Dan Tilstra, 269-208-1111, if you want to give a gift to the building project, have questions, or simply a suggestion that might give us more success.
