Message from the Principal . . . Dear Parents, Greetings! Another special week has concluded at FLEC and today I come before you recognizing what an awesome responsibility it is to minister on a daily basis to every single one of our boys and girls (all 537 of them). As I worship with the different classes in the morning, I am so impressed with the spiritual journey of our children. In Mrs. Fernandez’ class today, we talked about answered prayer and one of the students shared that a grandparent was in hospice care and as a result of fervent family prayer, the grandparent has been discharged and doing well physically. Isn’t it awesome to see Jesus being a real part of the children’s spiritual journey? The students are learning to claim promises. Matthew 21:22 tells us: “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."

Won’t you claim this promise in your life today and see the wonderful things that God has in store for you? Blessings, Janet Ledesma

LOST AND FOUND We presently have a lot of lost and found items here at the school. It is the school’s policy that at the end of each month all lost and found items will be donated to the Forest Lake Church Thrift Store. November 20th will be our next delivery. If you have lost an item, please come and claim that item as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to stop by the office. NEW AFTERCARE HOURS Due to daylight savings time, Aftercare hours will be changing. Effective November 6 through March 5, 2010, Aftercare will be closing at 5:15 p.m. ON FRIDAY’S ONLY. Please make arrangements to pick up your child by 5:15 p.m. This prayerful decision was made to allow time to prepare for Sabbath observance. While our goal is to honor this special day of the week that God bestows upon us and to receive His blessings, we recognize that this may present a hardship for some families. Please do not hesitate to contact us if our new hours present a problem for you. As always, we are here for you. FALL FESTIVAL FLEC’s annual Fall Festival is on Sunday, November 1, 2009. Our Home & School Association have worked feverishly to sponsor a fabulous day. It is a regularly scheduled school day. As such, while uniforms will not be worn, proper decorum and attire will be adhered to. FOOD ALLERGIES Over the last two weeks, we have dealt with reactions to food allergies. On behalf of our students with food allergies, we are requesting that if you are hosting, sponsoring a party or sending food to school that you label foods that contain nuts, peanut oil or peanut butter. As a school family, we have put controls in place to continue to make FLEC a safe place for all our students. DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME Please remember to change your clocks for daylight savings time. We want to make sure that you are on time for the Fall Festival. PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent/Teacher conferences will be held next Monday and Tuesday, November 2 and 3, 2009. Please remember that school will end at 12:00 p.m. and as such, no lunch will be served. If you have not received an appointment time from your child’s teacher, please contact them as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing all of our parents! BEAR SIGHTING We have had a black bear in the woods behind the school. Present policy states that if a bear is sighted on or near campus, administration will be notified immediately. All students’ outside will return to their classrooms/gymnasium/library. Appropriate authorities will be notified. No students will be allowed outside until all is clear. HELP OUR TEACHERS! Many classrooms are being disrupted between 2:45-3:00 p.m. and we need your help. It is our desire for teachers to utilize class time effectively and would like to request that disruptions be kept to a minimum. Also, if you would like to see a teacher we ask that you wait until after dismissal, call or e-mail for an appointment. The FLEC Receptionist is happy to deliver messages, lunches, books and papers to your child. Thank you so much for your cooperation in this matter.

DISMISSAL Remember school is out at 3:15 pm. Please note that it is disruptive to learning when parents come to the classroom door at 2:50 or 3:00 to get their child. Please be patient and wait till the class is dismissed, you can meet your child as the class leaves the classroom. Thank you for understanding and helping the teachers utilize those last minutes of the day. Choose a Lane - Please remember to be extremely careful and patient when driving on campus. As you turn into the school drive please use the right lane if you are picking up from behind the school (5th through 8th grader riders) and the left lane if you are picking up children in front of the school (Pre-K through 4th grade and multi-grade riders). Remember to be considerate; yield to your neighbor and practice patience. Safety is our number one concern. Rain Dismissal – We continue to tweak our rain dismissal procedure. Our goal is to safely complete dismissal in 30 minutes or less from when the dismissal bell rings. Be assured that your child will not be

sent to Aftercare as long as there are still cars in line to pick-up. H1N1 PROTOCOL Parents, please refer to our website for instructions regarding the H1N1 protocol. Remember that your child MUST be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. FLU PREVENTION Flu season has started early this year and with swine flu being such a prominent news story do you ever wonder what FLEC is doing to prevent the flu? Be assured that FLEC Administration and staff takes flu prevention very serious. In consult with several medical experts, FLEC Administration has adopted the following practices: Posters at every sink to show and encourage good hand washing techniques. (Make hand washing fun and effective, sing “Happy Birthday” twice to encourage children to wash for the recommended 20 seconds) Hand sanitizer placed in every classroom and many other convenient places around our school. (CDC recommends a minimum of 60% Ethyl Alcohol in hand sanitizer, FLEC uses hand sanitizer with a 63% Ethyl Alcohol base.) Classrooms are thoroughly cleaned every day. If a student shows signs of the flu that classroom receives a deeper cleaning with an industrial sanitizer that includes every desk, chair, keyboard lunchbox storage area and the nearby bathrooms and drinking fountains. Frequent cleaning, through-out the day our doors, drinking fountains, sinks phones for student use, are wiped down with disinfectant. Flu Shots are encouraged. Stay Healthy Links:

LOWER YOUR CELL PHONE BILL The FLEC Handbook states: “Cell phones must be powered off during school hours: 7:50 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. Monday – Thursday, and 7:50 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Fridays. They must not be visible during class, in the halls, or anywhere on campus during school hours.” There will now be a fine for any cell phone visible during the school day. Students can use school phones with teacher’s permission and parents may leave messages with the front office if they need to reach their student. VOLUNTARY PREKINDERGARTEN We still have several openings in our VPK program. This is a wonderful opportunity for your four year old to experience learning in a Christian school environment. Sincerely, Melissa Keller Home and School Association DEVELOPMENT REPORT Parents! Kids! Join the “Square Foot Campaign”! Tuesday, Oct. 28, we successfully launched the “Square Foot Campaign”. As the students sat in the gym, inside a taped-off area, equivalent to the proportions of one of the new classrooms, 40’ X 25’ (1000 square feet), we challenged them to help find sponsors for 1000 square feet of the New Building. At $100 per square foot sponsorship that makes $100,000. With 534 students currently enrolled, that’s a little less than 2 square feet per student! We believe it can be done! To do this each student will look for at least 2 friends, or family members who would be willing to sponsor at least one square foot of the new school building. A letter explaining this program has been sent home to the parents, along with a form on which to list potential donors. Lists will be collected in the classrooms on Nov. 5. These names will only be used for the Square Foot Campaign. During the week of November 9-13, each class will have one period to use provided cell phones to call their potential donors. The students will NOT be asking for money on the phone. They will simply ask the potential donor to watch for and read a square letter from FLEC telling about the New Building project. The letter will ask them to consider sponsoring a square foot and will include a self-addressed envelope for them to return if they choose to participate. Prizes will be awarded throughout the campaign as incentives. Every student who participates will be rewarded. Everyone can win! Thanks for helping make this happen! Please call Dan Tilstra, 269-208-1111, if you have any questions. CLASSIFIEDS Terry's Family Day Care "A happy and fun Christian home away from home."
