On the cusp of womanhood but deep in adolescence, this emotive book ‘Girls’ focuses on the personal narratives of 18 girls living in the UK. My aim of the project was to bring the voices of these girls to the surface and highlight issues surrounding body image, peer pressure, bullying and sexualisation. The girls’ age range from 10 to 16 and differ in terms of wealth, religion, ethnicity and geography but ultimately they are all dealing with the same issues. This series is the result of a close collaboration. Without the young girls’ trust in me, they couldn’t have shown both their vulnerabilities and strengths. I have intentionally captured the girl’s beauty and innocence to contrast with the honest reflections that they shared with me. I hope to raise awareness to the concerns that often get disregarded and voices remain marginalised. I feel the only way for society to progress on these issues is to empower young girls to enable significant change.
