ADVICE BY MICHELE LERNER
HE weather seems to be gearing up for the last month of the decade, ensuring we are blessed with a summery December. Our gardens are bursting alive with flowers and birds, homes are putting holiday vibes on and even more visitors are arriving to bring new life to where we live. I have friends all over the world and this week have received an amazing number of winter Christmas videos and photos as the northern hemisphere prepares for the darker days and possible snow. Meanwhile, here we are putting watermelon on the table, stoking up the braai and drawing open the curtains to let life in. It’s been a long winter, you’ve made it. Time to take off your shoes, let your hair down, wake up the household and let the party begin.
Colour D your lifestyle A design expert’s tips to ensure you add just the right amount of ‘pop’ to small spaces
Vivian Warby and team
Choose accent pieces of furniture to add colour punch to a room. PICTURE: GUSTAVO PERES
ESIGN articles often suggest a “pop of colour” to perk up an overly neutral palette in your home. But if you live in tight quarters, how do you know how many pops are too many? We asked New York designer Debbie Lori Travin of DLT Interiors to share her insights about using colour in the home, particularly when you are living in a studio or one-bedroom apartment, or in a home with smaller rooms. “The use of colour in a small space needs to be done strategically and sparingly,” Travin says. “If there’s too much colour, the space becomes unsophisticated looking, more like a child’s room. If there is not enough colour, it could look dull and uninspiring.” Here are Travin’s recommended steps to using just the right amount of colour in a small space: 1 Start with a neutral palette for the key pieces of furniture, which include the sofa and chairs. 2 Decide which accent colours makes you happy and go with them. Remember, you want to design a room you enjoy looking at and spending time in. 3 Once you decide which accent colour you like most, decide where you would like to use it. Using colour sparingly and
precisely is a challenge and requires editing accordingly. Here are other ways to use colour in a small room: Add colour with the cushions. Travin chose light blue and orange for one room because her client loved that combination. Choose an accent piece of furniture in a colour to add personality and punch into the room. For example, she chose to use a soft, blue animal print fabric on benches in one project which, she said, added panache to the room and balanced with the light blue cushions on the sofa. Incorporate artwork This is a great way to introduce colour into a small space. In her client’s home, she added a large painting with oranges and blues over the sofa to tie in and bring all the colours together. Include metal In a client’s home she added gold accents in the cocktail table and side tables as well as in the lighting. Gold is a warm metal and works well with oranges and blues, she says. Silver accents add a cooler tone to blues and oranges. Either one works beautifully and adds another dimension to your room’s colours. “Make sure you do not overuse colour in a small room,” Travin says. “Choose wisely with the cushions, accent furniture, artwork or accessories and keep most of the base of the furniture neutral, and then you will have a room that is both sophisticated as well as inviting.” – Washington Post

OUND in a quiet, secure section of sought-after Craighall Park, Joburg, this newly built north-facing four-bedroom modern masterpiece is ideal for a family. Originally farm land, Craighall Park was hours from the Joburg CBD by horse or ox wagon more than 100 years ago. Today, locals have Delta Park and its more than 104ha of lush recreational land for dog walks, horse rides, jogging, cycling and family fun. The suburb’s median property prices are increasing in a depressed market, with large units of between 1 000m² and 2 000m², secure upmarket estates and sectional title units. One can find older homes on huge stands for under R3 million or modern architectural marvels for more than R10m. This property greets one with a large double-volume entrance hall, well illuminated with skylights, allowing natural light to pour in. Moving further, one steps into an entertainment space with three airy free-flow reception rooms. A delightful fitted guest suite features its own entrance, a kitchenette area and a door to the front garden. Craighall Park is one of Joburg’s top five suburbs in terms of property growth. Delta Park provides quick and convenient access to the Joburg, Sandton, Rosebank and Randburg CBDs, and to top restaurants and coffee shops. Security cameras are mounted throughout the streets. Patrolling security vehicles and road guards add to the sense of safety and security.

INSIDER’S GUIDE TO
Lyndhurst is central and, therefore, allows for reasonable travel times to almost any part of Joburg when commuting to and from work. ZANELE NCUBE R E A LT O R , A C U T T S E STAT E AG E N T S

Conveniently located and with large properties on the market for under R2 million, Lyndhurst is where savvy investors and developers should be shopping A D U LT P O P U L AT I O N BY JOHN MAKONI
YNDHURST is a good place to make an investment at the moment. Investors and developers have an opportunity to purchase a large stand with a view to developing sectional titles – there’s every reason to believe their initial investments will be repaid handsomely down the road. Acutts Estate Agents realtor and Lyndhurst resident Zanele Ncube recently witnessed a property of more than 3 000m² sell for just R1.45 million in a deal she views as partly the result of the prevailing buyer’s market. “I’d encourage more developers to take an interest in the area as I believe more value can be derived from converting the large land spaces
into sectional title schemes. The Lyndhurst area has been fully developed and there isn’t much space to develop townhouses unless one purchases one of the bigger stands and changes it into a sectional title scheme.” She says the houses are of a superior build quality compared to most modern developments and reckons the suburb was developed around 1900. Lyndhurst is predominantly freehold, although this looks set to change as more freeholds make way for intensive land-use developments such as sectionals and clusters, as is happening in most parts of the city. The few developments to have occurred in Lyndhurst so far have been mainly for letting, says Ncube. “The stand sizes are quite generous, ranging from 1 487m² to
3 067m²,” she says, noting that a stand sold for less than R1.5m was 3 007m² in size. The maximum paid for a property transfer in the suburb in the past months was R1.65m, the minimum R450 000, says Ncube. “Lyndhurst is experiencing a buyer’s market, as is the rest of the property market in South Africa and, therefore, has seen quite a few sellers having to compromise on their initial asking prices or risk having the properties sit on the market for more than a year.” The most expensive properties are likely to top out at R1.8m, in line with the predominant LSM for the area, and these have elicited little interest, given the current economic climate, says Ncube. “The general population in Lynd-
hurst belongs to LSM 9 with an average household income of between R30 000 and R40 000 a month. Like the surrounding areas of Glenhazel, Sydenham, Highlands North and Fairmont, Lyndhurst has a considerable Jewish community and maintains a balanced demographic.” Apart from its relative affordability, Lyndhurst also attracts interest for the essential amenities close by such as Balfour Park Mall, Lyndhurst Square and schools such as Eden College and Lyndhurst Primary School. “Lyndhurst is also central and, therefore, allows for reasonable travel times to almost any part of Joburg when commuting to and from work. The area also has the coverage of Community Active Protection which helps make the area safer,” says Ncube.

summer BY B I D D I R O U R K E
Y MAKING a few subtle changes, you can turn your home into a cool haven during the summer months.
UPDATE YOUR SPACE It’s time to swop anything that reminds you of cold weather with lighter, brighter accessories. Store heaters and thick blankets out of sight and exchange winter scatter cushions with cheerful patterned ones. If your entertaining area needs a facelift, it’s not as hard or expensive as you may think. Add a carefree feel by throwing down a colourful carpet in weather-proof fabrics, or opt for natural fabrics such as coir, sea grass and sisal if your outdoor space is under cover. A breezy, lightweight throw for outside couches also screams summer, and organising suitable storage for towels and pool accessories means less mess when entertaining around the pool. BE SMART To save having to dart to the kitchen every time someone needs a refill, keep a stocked drinks trolley – complete with ice buckets – on hand. Consider a portable fire pit to add warmth once the sun goes down. And don’t forget the cool tunes – good quality Bluetooth speakers needn’t break the bank. CONSIDER YOUR COLOURS The start of the holidays is a good time to tackle small
PICTURE: OSWALDO MARTINEZ
Simple seasonal updates are key to making your home fit for sunshine entertaining
painting jobs. Sand, varnish and oil wooden balustrades, outdoor furniture, picnic tables and window frames to ensure they stay in tip-top condition in the elements. Update tired furniture with a lick of paint, and experiment with colours. Plascon’s Favourite Hue for 2020 is Mulberry Leaf, a rich green shade that could also work brilliantly on an accent wall. Complement this burst of green with a warm neutral (Cream of Mushroom), golden tones (Gold Cadillac) or a trendy copper pink (Warm Welcome). LIGHT THE WAY Fairy lights strung through trees, on awnings and above garden pathways add an instant touch of festivity and whimsy. Modern hurricane pendants, with black steel frames and clear glass shades are bang on trend, boasting a wonderful ability to add a rustic-inspired style to both indoor and outdoor spaces. As Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse says, these pieces combine Georgian-inspired undertones with a sleek, contemporary simplicity. “Whether they are added to your outdoor patio or installed indoors in your home’s entryway, over your dining room table, or in your kitchen, these oversized lanterns are bold and audacious, and they have the ability to draw the eye upwards to make a room seem more expansive, pulled together and infinitely more elegant.” SEAT YOURSELF If you love to entertain, your outdoor space needs to include
plenty of seating options to cater for large groups of family and friends. Invest in a large table and chairs plus another zone with extra casual seating to provide you and your guests with a choice of places to come together, or escape if the need arises. Keep in mind that outdoor furniture often gets moved around so opt for lightweight materials that will withstand the harsh summer sun. Sunken seating areas offer a more intimate, relaxed feel and can be dotted with oversized, textured cushions for an on-trend boho feel. POOL PLEASURES It’s time to get to grips with the time and attention it takes to keep with water sparkling and blue. Nothing puts a damper on a summer gathering more than a green, algaeinfested pool. If you’re struggling to maintain the correct pH levels, take a water sample to your closest pool shop where they can recommend the correct concoction of chemicals to keep it in good health. THROW SOME SHADE A day-time summer gathering invariably calls for shelter from the elements. Canvas umbrellas, retractable awnings, shutters and screens can work wonders when it comes to reducing glare, adding privacy and limiting the effects of wind. GOOD SCENTS Citronella candles add atmosphere and do a good job of keeping mosquitoes at bay. Buy pillar candles in summer scents and place them in glass hurricane jars to prevent them blowing out.
When you’re stocking up, get yourself party ready too. ◆ Keep lots of beverages and snacks on hand for impromptu gatherings. ◆ Make sure the braai grid is clean and buy plenty of charcoal. ◆ Clean the outdoor chairs and cushions. ◆ Make sure you have bug spray and sunblock.

HEAVEN SCENT THIS SEASON
Design your garden for smells that encourage one to linger in the space, and not just for colour and visual appeal

OME plants spread their scents far and wide, others are fragrant at certain times of the day or evening, recalling memories. The scents we love are not only to pleasure us, but to attract pollinators. “Scents bring memories and memories bring nostalgic pleasure,” wrote gardening expert Thalassa Cruso. Helen Keller described the sense of smell as that of “a fallen angel” for scent is intangible and subtle. It is difficult to describe scent, as each person perceives and reacts differently, and while it can have a calming, stimulating or refreshing effect on one person, it may cause a different reaction in others. Some scents can dominate those with more delicate perfume. Too many scents in one place can be overpowering, so plants are best spread around the garden. Use non-fragrant plants to intermingle with scented varieties. Place scented flowers and foliage at the entrance to the garden, near windows and doors and along pathways. Position containers of scented plants near entrances to welcome visitors and beneath windows to let the perfume drift indoors. Pots of scented flowers on patios and near seating areas add to the enjoyment of sitting outside.
FAVOURITE SUMMER SCENTS Roses Bourbon rose “Mme Isaac Pereire” has richly scented magentapink flowers, fragrant “Mme Alfred Carriere” has clusters of whiteflushed, soft-pink blooms. Hybrid musk roses are known for their fragrance. “Felicia” has clusters of silvery-pink flowers and “Penelope” has trusses of scented white flowers.
Englishman David Austin bred roses that combined the charm and rich fragrance of old roses with the colour range and repeat-flowering of modern roses. “Sharifa Asma” is citrus scented, “Clare Austin” myrrh, “The Lady Gardener” tea and vanilla, and “Munstead Wood” has a rich old rose scent. Some rose names will tell you which are richly scented – “Addictive Allure”, “Perfume Passion”, “Dermalogica Passion”, “Scentsational”, “Sheila’s Perfume” and “Fragrant Cloud”. One of the most popular roses, “Double Delight”, is creamy white with strawberry-red petals and a fruity fragrance. Gardenia The buds of gardenias open into satiny white flowers with an exotic scent. Gardenia augusta from China and Japan has dark green shiny leaves and waxy white flowers, and cultivar “Florida” has double white flowers. Compact growing G “Radicans” is ideal for pot culture. Gardenias need moist, acid soil, good air circulation and morning sun. The forest or wild gardenia (Gardenia thunbergia) is an indigenous forest species that does best in warm climates. It grows to 3m and has sweetly-scented white flowers. Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) from China is not a jasmine species, but is named so because of its starry white flowers and scent. Grow as a climber, ground cover or clipped hedge. Honey scents The false olive (Buddleja saligna) is indigenous with tiny creamy-white flowers and a honey scent from spring to summer. Grow as a pioneer plant, windbreak or clipped hedge. The honeybell bush (Freylinia lanceolata) has honey-scented flowers that attract butterflies. Alyssum has a delicate honey scent and is among the most useful
of annuals for a quick “carpet” effect. Use it in pots, to edge paths, and in between the treads of steps and paving.
THE EVENING GARDEN Fragrance plays an important role in an evening garden, where scents drift onto patios and through open windows. Lilies are a favourite for their elegant flowers and for their strong perfume. White flowers often attract night-time pollinators, not only because they are visible in the dark, but also if their blooms are scented. Indigenous orchid, Mystacidium capense, is an epiphytic (tree) orchid with dainty arching sprays of scented white flowers. For semi-shade and for twilight gardens grow the tall tobacco plant (Nicotiana alata) with tubular white flowers and the metre-high woodland tobacco (N sylvestris) with long white tubular white flowers, both with an evening scent. More evening scents include the dainty lilac stock (Matthiola bicornis), tuberose and hosta.
SCENTED FOLIAGE For year-round scent and attractive silver-grey foliage, there is nothing better than lavender species and cultivars and lavender-scented santolina with finely cut leaves of silvery grey to edge a path or border. Scented geraniums (pelargoniums) are grown for their attractive leaf shapes and scents, such as lemon, orange, rose, peppermint, nutmeg and balsam that release their scent when touched or crushed. The foliage of many of the fynbos buchus is scented; confetti bush (Coleonema album) has aromatic needle-like leaves and a lemon scent; the needle-shaped leaves of indigenous wild rosemary (Eriocephalus africanus) are aromatic.
