analysis process | study of the district’s potentiality Our diploma project focuses at the scale of three urban blocks, but negotiates the wider subject of housing, public space and mixed uses in the center of the city. The place of our intervention is Metaxourgeio, a neighborhood in the center of Athens that is currently being rapidly transformed. In order to deal with the area in a complete way we start from the city scale to get down to that of the neighborhood. The first stage of the project includes an extensive quantitative and qualitative study of the problems and dynamics of the district.

scenario | proposal for the whole area

In the center of our intervention lies the concept of complete conservation of built, natural and social environment in a balanced way that will allow the integration of new functions in the service of the habitants’ needs. We thus form a network of public spaces that runs through the whole district, includes existing and proposed uses and reflects the different dimensions of space: local/supra-local, public/private, housing/ commercial zone etc. Our proposal consists of three basic levels: • • •

The infill of urban voids with new housing complexes The management of the built stock of the area The formation of those public spaces that condense the collective life of the city

sub - region | of intervention

The sub-region of intervention was chosen with the following criteria:

network of public spaces

-the large quantity of open unbuilt spaces -the existence of building stock appropriate for reuse -the proximity to existing residential areas -the presence of listed buildings -the possibility to create a continuous path through the three blocks Our basic objectives are the following: -the activation of the unused building stock -the integration of open spaces into the pedestrian routes -the removal of building blocks in unsustainable situation in order to open pathwalks inside the blocks - the preservation of building shells as elements of outdoor public space

creation of pahts for pedestrians and cyclists

warehousing (existing) office buildings (existing) entertainment - commercial (existing) entertainment - commercial (new) cultural uses building stock to be conserved block fronts to be completed

3 | urban blocks

Focusing in the three urban blocks, we place in each of them a housing complex that arranges a public space, of different kind and quality every time. In the first case, the placement of the building boosts public and semi-public pedestrian ways through the block. In the second, we form an inner square, a meeting point and a green islet in the middle of the block. Finally, in the third case we fill an incomplete urban front. Towards to the direction of enforcing the mix of uses in the area, we place in the ground level mainly work spaces along with residential functions that will keep the place vivid. Last but not least, we intervene in two preserved buildings, placing a cook house in the one and a small library in the other.

qualitative characteristics 1. parasitic intrusion of the housing complex in the block 2. free common space that refers to the houses and the cook house 3. reinforcement of movements inside the block trough promenade routes

architecture of representation spaces theatre complex

Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-La-Villette

Mahtab MAZLOUMAN | Jean-Louis CHASSARD Actes.sceno@wanadoo.fr

The objective of this studio was the design of a theatre complex that includes a large hall of 500 seats for performances, a smaller hall of 200 seats and easily transformable (modulable), backstage and the necessary rehearsal space, an entrance foyer with a restaurant and a coffee place, as well as the necessary mechanical spaces, spaces of circulation and waiting.

emphasis in public spaces

relation between actors and spectators, between fiction and reality

both solid and transparent parts

The programme of a representation space, due to its operational and technical complexity, constitutes an interesting field for the developement of architectural synthesis skills . It requires an extensive study of the structure of inner and outer space, of the relation between private and public space, between space that refers to actors and viewers. We studied the relation of the scene and the hall, the visibility curve and angles, the mechanical parts of the scene, the volume of the whole complex and its integration in the city landscape.

Our concept idea was based on three main objectives: 1| the direct relation of the theatre complex with the neighbourhood. We tried to integrate in our synthesis other functions referring to the habitants of the district apart from that of the theatre, spaces for intercourse, communication and culture. 2| the creation of an open central space aimed to connect the different functions of the theater complex between them and with the public space network of the city 3| the design of spaces for actors and spectators in a way that creates a mysterious and playfull atmosphere between them

conservation and restoration Valtsani brothers flour mill, Thessaloniki marketplace and restaurant

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki | School of Architecture

Supervisors: Clairi Palivou | Georgios Karadedos

This studio deals with the subject of the conservation and restoration of an old abandonned flour mill in the West Entrance area of Thessaloniki. We completed an extensive study on the building morphology and typology, the methods and materials used during construction through time, on the way it functioned and was related to its surroundings. Taking into consideration the current situation of the wider region, as well as the memory of the buiding’s former use, we decided to turn it into a neighborhood restaurant and marketplace.

3-dimensional display of old roof

compositon principles

If once the sense that gave the mill to a visitor was one of ‘fullness’ and of horizontal lines due to the completeness of all the floors-levels, the current feeling is that of “emptiness”, verticality and totality. The abandoned shell offers to the visitor a full oversight of its large scale and hight. Finding that sensation really interesting, we chose to maintain it. The basic principle of our composition was the attempt not to alter the existing frame of the building. Thus, the masonry and coating remain unchanged in the inside, while the coating is removed and replaced with kourasani (and white cement adding) in the exterior parts, leaving the stone exposed. At the same time, the new floors that we add are supported by an almost completely autonomous static structure, composed by a system of large steel columns and beams. The new floors leave gaps that allow the visitor to undestand the scale of the building, and most of the parts of the building remain open-air or lightly roofed.

proposal | scenario of intervention

hypertopic park - old railway station zone of education and culture, using the industrial building stock market zones protected housing area general residential area office buildings local market market route green route

This studio deals with the formation of a programme of urban renewal for a transitional district of the city, as is the West Entrance of Thessaloniki. The analysis of the current situation via field research showed that the district is characterized by degradation, lack of concern for the needs of the minority populations and inadequate green spaces. We believe that the tendency to gentrifyings politics is already leading to the displacement of the lower social groups of inhabitants and does not contribute to the district’s multiple problems. We propose the modification of the hypertopical character of the area, by strengthening the public common spaces instead of the private ones. We thus convert the old railway station area to a city park and use its buildings to roof a municipal market. We also create protected zones of housing, keeping the rents in a low level.

sub-region of intervention | planning

main objectives 1. the creation of a zone of culture and education, conserving and highlighting the existing industrial shells 2. the extension and reinforcement of residential areas, in order to reclaim the continuity and liveliness of the district 3. the creation of commercial route and zones with boundaries, to protect the residential areas. The particular character of the chinese market should be preserved and connected to the route. 4. the reinforcement of collective life, the raise of the living standards, the diffusion of green through the residential and public spaces.

london cinema | challenge

cinema out of the box Cinema has been linked, until today, to the more or less personal experience of watching a film, requiring not much more than a big screen, four walls, and yourself. Watching a film is a completely one-way process; production ends way before the film is disposable to its audience. Thus, trying to imagine the cinematic experience of the near future, two basic questions emerged: could watching a film be a collective way of experiencing art? and, most importantly, could cinema transform into a much more interactive procedure? We believe that exploring the possibilities of generating and manipulating audiovisual material could lead to cutting edge -even real time- performances. A new relation between user and screen should be introduced, based on the use of dynamic digital processes in an attempt to combine sound, image and human act: cinema is here conceived as a generative instead of a representing experience.

facades Exactly on this view of the cinema’s future is that we base the unique feature of our proposal: a single black box serves as the cinema hall and retains its mystery, surrounded by a space that hosts experimental procedures of producing sound and video, studios and laboratories open to the audience that, as a collective entity, not only watches the result but interacts with it. Inspired by the field of digital and media art, and especially sound visualization, we imagined a space where anyone interested can take a deep dive into the world of cinema, even organize and display his own independent production.

The design idea of our proposal was inspired from the form of a monolith; it would seem to us that only by sculpting a dynamic and compact form could we deal with the surrounding large-scale buildings of the block. The next step was to allow the passersby to take a look inside, by making cuts to the monolithic outer shell: a small cut serves as the buildings entrance, and a second one –larger- serves as a from-top-to-bottom cut that reveals the building’s orthogonal internal structure. The cinema hall is conceived as an independent black box, added to the rest of the building in a contrastive way. A second, smaller projection space is placed on the ground level, directly linked to the exterior space of the building and serving as a walk-in cinema.
