The Coral Leisure Half Marathon & 10km will take place on March 23rd 2014 starting from the fantastic venue of Wicklow’s Historic Gaol.

This is the 5th year of this popular, scenic and atmospheric race. n 2013 we introduced a flatter half marathon which was very well received. We look forward to welcoming over 1,000 participants to the

The unique Finish area in the Courtyard of Wicklow’s Historic Gaol and the scenic Coastal course has been a big hit with runners and walkers from all over the country.

Finishers will receive a Medal, a shower afterwards in the local Coral Leisure centre and refreshments in the Grand Hotel. The race will also provide a quality Training top and a timing chip to record your walking or running time.

There is a dedicated walking section which starts earlier for the Half Marathon to ensure everyone enjoys the atmospheric Finish area in the Courtyard of Wicklow’s Historic Gaol.

Climb the tower’s winding steps and enjoy the views of Powerscourt House and Gardens. Why not stop for a photo beside the many cannons surrounding the tower! Lord Powerscourt was an avid fan of the scouting movement and encouraged troops to camp on the grounds at Powerscourt. When you reach the top of the tower, you are standing where Lord Powerscourt 8th Viscount once stood and surveyed the scout camps long ago, although now the trees have grown too high to do so! Scout troops still occasionally camp on these grounds today.

Annual Members of Powerscourt enjoy exclusive access to Powerscourt River Walk featuring 3km of tranquil pathways and secret woodland trails. The River Walk’s main pathway was laid in 1868 by Viscount Powerscourt so that his family could enjoy the serenity of the River Dargle.

Upon entering the River Walk, follow the main path which will lead you down towards the tranquil tune of the river and to where the pathway splits in two. To the left is almost 1 kilometre of nature’s most precious woodlands and to the right, a 2km walkway offers an array of riverside picnic areas. Ladies Workout Express Bray 5 years Anniversary Celebrations The women of Ladies Workout Express Bray celebrated five years of fitness at the end of February with a party and a presentation in the gym.

The results of the 20th Biggest Loser Express which is a six week fitness and nutritional programme were also announced on the night 1st place= Louise Stevenson down 30 pounds and 30.5 inches 2nd place = Suzanne Mc Clurg down 21 pounds and 42 inches 3rd place = Lauren Cousins Lynch down 18 pounds and 23.5 inches. We also had 5 other over a stone achievers Tamara Flood, Paula Healy, Tina Megannety, Chloe Doyle and Aoife Doyle.

45 members also took part in Hell & Back in January and raised €1,400 for Pink Ribbon Action Breast Cancer.

Members will be taking part in Darkness into Light in Bray on Saturday 10th of May to raise money for Pieta House and Open Door Centre Bray.

The first signs of tulip foliage peaking through the soil surface with promises of imminent delights. Ok, I’m out in the garden so where to start?

It is time to see how the weather has managed to sort the hardy from the tender. Whilst no two gardens are the same, there are similar jobs we can all be doing at this time of the year.

- Begin with assessing the damage the weather may have done to trees and shrubs over the last few months. Where trees are concerned it is important to remove any damaged or broken limbs properly. Using sharp, clean pruning equipment will drastically reduce the risk of die back and infection. Identifying any potentially troublesome branches early will reduce work load and potentially expen-

sive cost in years to come. Potential troublesome branches would include branches that may encroach on your or a neighbouring property. Other potential problems to look out for would be branches growing inward or toward other more established branches that may rub on the bark and open a wound that could become infected. Always ensure a clean cut.

Is it time to move “that” plant that has been bothering you? Well then here is a guide on how to do that. It is important to remember that Deciduous plants can be moved from October - mid March.

Evergreen plants are best moved in late March as the soil temperatures increase. Try to choose a calm dull day for moving your plants as this will reduce moisture loss and prevent roots drying out. Make sure to water well before you begin the process. How much space to I give for a good rootball? A good indicator is too look at the form of the chosen plant. The canopy (branches

& foliage) spread is a good indicator as to the majority of the feeding roots.

Dig around this area and lift as much rootball as possible. I would recommend lifting and replanting in one go so it is important to identify your new site and prepare the area to receive the new plant before hand. This will reduce the amount of stress on the plant. Once you have planted, water in three times.

Water once, when the water pool as drained away then water again, once it has drained away water one final time.

The final step is mulching, this will retain moisture and reduce evaporation.

Do you have a favoured perennial that you’d like more of but can’t find it in the local garden centre or would rather invest your money in adding new planting or landscaping?

Then lifting and dividing is the answer.

Summer flowering perennials like Echinacea purpurea or Leucanthemum x superbum ‘Aglaia’ are best divided in spring. Make sure it isn’t too wet to avoid compacting your soil. Spring flowering perennials like Euphorbia characias wulfenii are best divided after flowering when root growth is active.

When dividing, lift gently and shake off excess soil to make sure the roots are visible. Smaller plants like Alchemilla mollis and Heuchera can be divided by hand by just gently pulling apart.

Larger plants like Rudbeckia “Goldstrum” and Agapanthus will require splitting using a fork or spade. Ideally you will have selected the new site for the plant and will lift and replant in one go, mulching after watering in.

Happy with your current layout? Then mulching over the next couple of months will help your borders retain moisture through those sunny weeks of summer. Well rotted garden compost, well rotted farm yard manure or leaf mould will be the ideal medium to mulch with. This does a couple of very important things for your beds.

Mainly it will retain moisture and reduce evaporation, the dark coloration of the mulch will attract the heat and increase the soil temperature, promoting growth and beneficial bacteria. It will also reduce weed growth. Make sure to water well before mulching.

Keep the mulch off the main stems of planting to make sure there won’t be any damage to the bark or stems.

With the days getting longer and the weather starting to get milder, this is a great time to get back into the garden.

Here are our 10 top tips for your garden right now:

One of the most rewarding jobs to do right now is to get rid of the weeds before they start growing with renewed vigour. Hand weed or hoe out new and emerging weeds.

Early spring is the best time of the year to give everything in the garden a good feed to kick start the new growing season. A slow release fertiliser is best as it breaks down slower and filters into the soil over a period of time and can be absorbed by growing roots and used to fuel growth and flowering.

This is a good time of year to buy your fruit trees and bushes and they can be brought bare rooted and cheaper than when in pots.

Buds are already starting to swell on fruit trees and bushes, so pruning of fruit trees and bushes such as apple and pear trees and blackcurrant bushes should be completed now.

Use a metal rake to remove any build up of thatch and moss. If the lawn is looking sparse, reseed or returf bare areas. Keep everyone off areas that are being renovated until the new grass is growing vigorously. Apply a slow-release complete lawn food to all grass areas.

Add instant colour with pots of pansy, polyanthus or flowering bulbs such as daffodils and tulips. Also plan ahead for flowers later in the year.

Early spring is a rewarding time to plant trees, shrubs and annuals.

Remove plants that have died or are past their best, or extend your garden to accommodate new plantings.

Prepare for new planting by clearing grass and weeds, then digging organic matter into the soil. When working out where to place a new plant take into account the amount of space that’s needed as it grows both across and up (see plant labels for information on plant size or ask for advice at your local garden centre).

Wooden furniture may need to be repainted or re-oiled. Nuts and bolts should be checked and tightened. Canvas chairs may need to be cleaned or re-covered. Also, clean the barbecue and replenish gas bottles.

Paving and other hard surfaces benefit from a vigorous sweep to remove accumulated leaves and dirt. Mossy or slippery paths can be cleaned and treated with a once-a-year product.

Plants that have already bloomed or have frost damage can be pruned to encourage new growth. Also remove old canes from perennials and grasses to make way for fresh spring growth. To keep shrubs, perennials and annuals in bloom over the months ahead, remove spent flowers regularly.

Located in east County Wicklow, Kilmacurragh Botanic Gardens is the centre-piece of an 18th century estate that once covered over 5000 acres (2000 ha). Seat of the Acton family for three centuries, it is now an outpost of the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin. The milder climate, higher rainfall and deeper, acidic soils of this historic Wicklow garden, provide a counterpoint to the collections at Glasnevin. Kilmacurragh provided a more advantageous situation for growing plants from the Himalaya and the Southern Hemisphere and is today famous for its conifers and calcifuges.

In 1996, a 52 acre (21 ha) portion of the old demesne comprising the house, arboretum, entrance drive and woodlands officially became part of the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland. By then the house was in ruins due to a series of disastrous fires in and the following ten years were spent rescuing valuable trees from a crippling tangle of cherry laurel. Certainly worth a visit! If you are considering leaving your dog into a boarding kennels, then you should do your homework.

All Kennels should have an up to date licence issued from their local authority. Ask can you inspect the kennels, if they say no, walk away. They should be strict on vaccinations, (Annual Booster and Canine Cough).

Ask about food, how dogs are exercised and how often, twice a day is just not enough. Does this mean they are left alone for very long periods? There should not be any smells and should be warm and comfortable. They should also have full planning permission with Insurance.

Dogs don’t lie so if they do not like returning to a kennels there is a reason.

ooth decay (Cavities) is the most common chronic childhood disease. The mouth is the gateway to a person’s overall health, and an unhealthy mouth can be linked to diabetes and even heart disease.

Fortunately, you can take action to start the process of preventing dental pain and disease. By taking care of your children’s teeth you can give your child a head start on having a healthy mouth for te rest of their lives. Early loss of baby teeth can cause problems later with orthodontic treatment as it is important to keep these baby teeth as they keep the space for the permanent teeth to erupt in their place while waiting for the jaw to grow.

Brushing: Children’s teeth should be brushed at least twice a day especially before bedtime. You should not encourage a drink eg (Fruit Juice, Milk etc) to be sipped after bedtime as this will remain in contact with

the teeth during the night – and so may cause tooth decay. Your dentist can show you and your child how to brush the teeth correctly.

Diet: A good healthy diet early in life is important.

Minimize the consumption of sugary foods and drinks.

Fissure Seals: When a child is about six years old the first molar teeth erupt. These teeth have to last a lifetime and as your child is so young if their oral health is not good these teeth may decay. The deep fissures in the teeth can retain food. Your dentist may suggest fissure seals. This is a procedure where a clear paste is placed in the deep crevice of the tooth and it is set hard, filling the crevices.

This prevents food from lodging and so helps to keep the teeth decay free and clean.

I

t is never an easy task to decide what happens to our assets after we die and whilst we all hear people talking about how important it is to make a Will we still tend to put making a Will on our “to-do” list and either never quite get around to it or else we created Wills years ago that are no longer adequate or applicable to our circumstances A Will is a legal document that allows you to express your wishes regarding the distribution of your property following your death. It also gives you an opportunity to consider how best to leave your assets so as to minimise the tax burden on your beneficiaries.

Why Make a Will?

There are many reasons for making a Will, the biggest being that it allows you to decide, how you want your assets distributed following

your death. This is particularly important if you are married or have children as you will be able to make provision for your loved ones.

If you die without making a Will, then you have died intestate.

You lose all control over how your assets are to be divided. The law determines how your estate will be distributed. The rules say that if you die leaving a spouse and children then your spouse is entitled to two-thirds of your estate and your children share the remaining one-third equally between them.

This is a problem if your children are under the age of 18 because there are no testamentary guardians or Trustees appointed to look after their interests.

How to Make a Valid Will in Ireland For a Will to be valid it must: • be made by a person who is over the age of 18 years; • be in writing; • be made by a person who is of sound mind • be made by them voluntarily and without pressure from any person; • Be signed by the person in the presence of two witnesses. There are restrictions on who can act as witnesses e.g. beneficiaries under the will cannot witness.

• Include an attestation (signing) clause.

If the above requirements are not complied with, the Will may be deemed to be invalid in which case the rules of intestacy will apply.

What Should I Do Next?

When making your Will you appoint Executors who manage your affairs after your death, and Trustees (if your will requires a Trust to be set up).

Most importantly however is that if your children are young your Will allows you to appoint Guardians to care for them on a daily basis

It is never too early to begin thinking about creating or updating your Will.

St. Cronan’s as well as Honorary Secretary of Bray Lions Club. Karl has worked on many projects over the last few years but perhaps is best known for setting up “Michael’s Hope for Independence”. Karl worked tirelessly to raise the funds to send his St. Cronan’s pupil, Michael Tiron who has Cerebral Palsy, to America for a life changing operation which saw him walk again. Preparations are in full swing in Greystones for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It will be on in the town from 12 noon on Monday March 17.

It will start at the South Beach car park and go through the town along Church Road to Victoria Road.

Groups and organisations will participate on the family day which is Greystones’ annual showcase.

There will be plaques awarded in the various different categories. Categories include sports, best traditional entry, most original entry, best uniformed organisation and more.

And while we don’t yet know whose game will be in top form entering the first major of 2014. It has been nearly six years since Tiger Woods last won a major championship, but the bookmakers are banking on that drought coming to an end at the 2014 Masters after installing him as one of the favorites alongside Rory McIlroy & Phil Mickelson.

Over the past couple years Woods has come agonizingly close to ending his major dry spell, but he has been able to put all facets of his game together for four rounds. With so much parity and talent present on the PGA Tour currently, Woods simply can’t get 38

As for McIlroy, it is somewhat surprising to see him listed as the No. 2 contender. He struggled mightily in 2013 and dropped all the way from No. 1 to No. 6 in the world. McIlroy appeared ready to unseat Woods as the best player in golf in 2012, however, and it is certainly possible that he could regain that form by The Masters.

Woods may be the favorite at The Masters come April 10, but he’ll have to hold off a field of hungry competitors and play consistently great golf to end his drought.

The only men’s major that is held on the same golf course each year is

the Masters, which is played in early April at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Established in 1934, the Masters is known for its picturesque setting and for the green jacket that is presented to the winner. The Masters also includes the fewest golfers of any major; invitations usually are sent to less than 100 golfers based on certain qualifications, such as recent winners of certain tournaments and golfers who were ranked among the top 50 in the world for the previous year. All previous Masters winners receive lifetime invitations, although most eventually stop participating after they are no longer able to compete at a certain level.

When an incident at her coronation ceremony exposes her magic ability to the citizens of Arendelle Elsa flees and cuts herself off from the rest of the world, but in her emotional state she sets off a spell that casts a perpetual winter over the kingdom. AVONDALE CAI RN WALK BALLYGANNON RED WALK Rathdrum, Co Wicklow

Avondale House, Rathrum Co Wicklow. Tel: 0404-46111 Avondale House, famed for its beautiful forests and Charles Stuart Parnell’s homeplace. This walk starts in the children’s playground and is an easy ramble along the open parkland known as the Great Ride to reach the Cairn. These rocks were assembled here when by the first foresters who cleared the land before planting. The route then goes in through a range of forest types. You’ll see beech, oak, Sitka spruce, pine and Douglas fir along the way. The route is easy underfoot and suitable for sturdy children’s buggies.

Here you can explore the old mining works. Don’t forget to keep an eye for Saint Kevin’s Bed on the other side of the lake.

Welcome to County Wicklow The Hollywood of Europe County Wicklow has a long and extremely successful history as a film location going back to the early days of film making around the 1930’s. Over the last 90 years the list of films that have been filmed in County Wicklow counts hundreds of feature films, television productions, commercials and short films.

Starting the list with such classics as Henry V starring Laurence Olivier, The Blue Max and Barry Lyndon directed

by Stanley Kubrick, it continues with more recent films like Braveheart, multi Oscar winner My Left Foot with Daniel Day Lewis, The Count of Monte Cristo, King Arthur, Lassie and the Tudors.

Braveheart

Locations: Kippure, Wicklow Mountains, Sally Gap & Ballymore Eustace Starring: Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, Sean McGinley, Brendan Gleeson & Patrick McGoohan.

Mel Gibson was attracted to shoot a large part of Braveheart in Ireland by the promise of the Irish Government that he would get the use of the reserve army for the extensive battle scenes, for which he needed fit and well trained fighters. So many horses were needed for the battle scenes, that all horse owners in the Wicklow / Kildare area were invited to take part with their horses as extras.

Vikings

Locations: Ashford Studios, Luggala Estate, Lough Tay and Lough Dan, Powerscourt Waterfall, Magheramore beach and Brittas Bay Beach.

Starring: Gabriel Byrne, Travis Fimmel, Kathryn Winnick, Clive Standen, Jessalyn Gilsig.

The new Vikings follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the sagas of Ragnar’s band of Viking brothers and his family, as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes.

As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods, legend has it that he was a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war and warriors.

This historical drama series was filmed all over the Wicklow Mountains which then were made to look like Norway and the series tells the story of the first trip by the Vikings to the west of Europe to raid and plunder England. The beach in Brittas Bay was used as location for the raid on Lindisfarne and it proved to be tricky to land the wooden Viking ship here. The series will be shown in Ireland in the autumn of 2013.

King Arthur

Locations: Turlough Hill, Glenmalure, Ballymore Eustace, Hollywood Glen & Luggala Estate, Roundwood Starring: Owen Wilson, Keira Knightly, Loan Gruffudd, Ray Winstone & Mads Mikkelsen A huge replica of Hadrian’s Wall, complete with Roman settlements was built in the area of Ballymore Eustace.

Many of the battle scenes took place here. Other locations that were used include Hollywood Glen, which was covered with fake snow and ice, and this is where the frozen lake scene was filmed. Powerscourt Estate was used extensively for the Wooded scenes. Luggala Estate and Ardmore Studios were also used. Glenmalure and in particular Fraughan Rock Glen were used for the snow and travelling scenes. In Glenmalure the small

village and the villa of the Roman family that needs to be rescued, were built. Turlough Hill in the middle of the Wicklow Gap provides the backdrop of the opening scenes of the film.

The Guard

The Guard starring Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle and Liam Cunningham, was partly shot in County Wicklow and in particular at Wicklow Harbour and the Black Castle. The Guard did phenomenally well nationally and internationally. Most recent productions shot in County Wicklow include Asterix and Obelix starring Gerard Depardieux, and new Neil Jordan movie Byzantium starring Eva Green and Saoirse Ronan.

During 2013 County Wicklow was used by many film projects including ‘Frank’ starring Michael Fassbender, Maggie Gyllenhaall and Domhnall Gleeson, and two films based on stories by Cecilia Ahern called ‘Romantic Road’ and ‘Where Rainbows end’. In the autumn Sam Mendes will film the project ‘Penny Dreadfull’ starring Eva Green and Josh Hartnett from Ardmore Studios is Bray.

ZESTY CRAB CLAWS WITH AVOCADO SALAD (Serves 4)

Garnish with the chunks of avocado, cherry tomatoes and roughly chopped flat leaf parsley. Season the whole dish with a pinch of salt and pepper.

PRAWN PIL PIL

SEARED MONKFISH & SCALLOPS WITH FENNEL AND ROASTED RED PEPPER SAUCE (Serves 4)

(Serves 2)

INGREDIENTS: 6-8 crab claws per person, cooked and shelled. If using fresh crab claws boil in salty water for 10 mins. Remove, let cool and shell.

2 limes juiced & zest of 1 lime – grate the skin of 1 lime on a cheese grater.

2 cloves of garlic, sliced thinly 1 bunch of flat leaf parsley, roughly chopped 2 ripe avocados 8 cherry tomatoes, quartered 2 heads of baby gem lettuce 100ml of olive oil

INGREDIENTS: INGREDIENTS:

Pinch of salt & pepper

8-10 peeled tiger prawns or langoustine 1 chilli, sliced with seeds 3-4 cloves garlic sliced Juice of ½ lemon 1 tsp of paprika Dash of white wine 100ml olive oil Cassoulet dish or any oven proof dish suitable for serving Fresh parsley

Pour the olive oil into a cold large pan and add the garlic and lime juice and bring to a gentle simmer Mix the cooked crab claws and lime zest together, cooking for 6-8 mins until the claws are warm and completely coated in the oil.

While the crab claws are warming and flavours infusing, get a large plate or platter and scatter washed baby gem leaves around the plate. Peel the avocados. Remove the stones and cut into rough chunks.

Remove the crab claws from the pan and place on the plate, and then pour all the juices from the pan over

Pop the dish into the preheated oven (180˚C, Gas mark 4).

Put olive oil into a cold pan along with lemon juice, paprika, white wine, garlic and chilli. Put on a medium heat and when the oil is infused into ingredients, normally after a couple of minutes, add the prawns.

Simmer for 2-3 minutes, turning halfway through. Remove the dish from the oven and place on a heat resistant mat and pour the mix into the dish.

Garnish with some freshly chopped parsley and serve in a dish sizzling along with some fresh baked gluten-bread or a nice side salad.

800g monkfish, or two full monkfish fillets 8 scallops 1tbsp. capers 1 bulb of fennel, thinly sliced 2 tbsp. gluten-free flour Salt and pepper 6 tbsp. olive oil Splash of white wine 250ml chicken or vegetable stock Roasted Red Pepper Sauce 1 lemon Dill For Red Peppers Sauce: 3 Red Peppers ½ Lemon Olive Oil Salt and pepper

METHOD:

Rub 3 peppers with olive oil.

There are two ways of doing the peppers – blacken on a pan or pop into a pre-heated oven (200˚C, Gas mark 5) for 15 mins.

When black, put in a bowl and cover with clingfilm and leave for 10 mins. This makes it easier to peel the blackened skin. Blitz all the ingredients and pass through a sieve, using a spoon to push the smooth texture through leaving the seeds and skin behind.

Season the flour with salt and pepper and scatter on a flat surface. Lightly dust the monkfish on both sides and tap to remove excess flour and put aside on a plate. Heat the olive oil in a pan on medium heat, add monkfish for about 2-4 mins until it is lightly browned before popping into a preheated oven (180˚C, Gas mark 4) for 8-10 mins.

While monkfish is in the oven, prepare the scallops by removing the muscle and scoring the scallops with an X, thus helping them cook more evenly. Depending on individual taste, you can remove the orange coral part.

Season with salt and pepper.

Put 250ml of chicken or vegetable stock into the pan along with juice of half a lemon, the fennel, capers and the white wine. Simmer for 4-6 mins, until the fennel is al dente.

When cooked, strain off any excess juice, cover and leave to one side.

Next, remove monkfish from oven and leave to rest in the pan for 3-4 mins.

Put a second non-stick pan on a high heat and when it begins to smoke, add 2 tbsp. of olive oil and then add the scallops, scored side down first, cooking for approx 1-2 mins on each side until golden brown.

Add the Roasted Red Pepper Sauce to a pan and simmer on a low heat In the centre of a plate, spread 2-3 tbsp. of the Roasted Red Pepper Sauce before adding 2-3 tbsp. of the fennel mix. Slice the monkfish in half and serve on top of the fennel along with the scallops and coral, garnishing with a wedge of fresh lemon and dill.
