Singers will perform melodies from the ‘30s, ‘40s, ‘50s, and straight through to the ‘90s. Tis the Season to Give Back Enjoy yourself while doing it, at the 22nd Annual Florida Classic Weekend.

It’s that time of year again, when the events start popping up on the calendar fast and furious—and that includes the 22nd Annual Florida Classic presented by Ford, BB&T and Breakthru Beverage. Over the years, the Florida Classic has netted almost $8.8 million for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to fund research and top-quality care for cystic fibrosis patients. This year, a new event is being introduced: “An Intimate Evening with Jon Secada” (formerly the 65 Roses Gala), which will feature a performance by the Grammy Award-winning singer where guests can enjoy dinner in a lounge-style atmosphere, seated front-andcenter for Secada’s performance. Other highlights to look forward to: A “50 Shades”-themed BeachBash on Thursday, November 16, at The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale; a golf tournament on Friday, November 17, at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club, and a fishing tournament on Saturday, November 18. For more information and to buy tickets, visit flbeachbash.eventscff.org.

PAY TO STAY The numbers are in. Here’s which cities in Florida command the most rent right now.

RENTCafé has just released its monthly rent report, with the peak rental season in the spotlight. The national average rent ($1,354) barely changed this summer, marking the longest period of stagnation in recent history: four months, to be exact. Most of Florida’s pricey markets came to a full stop during the peak rental season, but significant year-over-year (y-o-y) growth warns renters not to expect major changes anytime soon. Here are some more highlights from the report:

38

NOVEMBER 2017

◗ Pembroke Pines and Pompano Beach saw the highest growth rates in Florida, 6.8% and 6.4% respectively, since last year ◗S t. Petersburg comes in third with a 5.5% increase y-o-y. But the 0.5% month-over-month decrease, the first decline of this rental season, shows that rent growth slowed down in St. Petersburg ◗ Rents in Tampa remained virtually flat for 4 consecutive months throughout this year’s high rental season. The average rent, which is currently standing at $1,209, is up 4.6% y-o-y ◗ After peaking at $1,605 in August, Miami rents decreased by 0.4% month over month, clocking in at $1,597 in September. But the average rent in Miami is still 2.5% higher than this time last year ◗ Orlando seems to have succeeded in keeping

rents stable during this summer. The priciest apartment market in Central Florida boasts an average rent of $1,282, though this is a $45 gain since the beginning of the rental season in March and a 3.7% increase y-o-y ◗ J acksonville also makes an appearance on the list of the fastest-growing rents in Florida, with a 4.1% increase y-o-yned fairly stable.

It’s that time again—holiday parties and merriment are commencing, and you need to be ready to shine. Barry Beck, founder of Blue Mercury, a new luxury beauty retailer on Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Boulevard and Miami’s Lincoln Road, shares his top product picks that use nature to obtain a good-for-you holiday glow. M-61 PowerGlow Peel ($28) Think of it as a serious time-eraser in a neat little package. This one-minute, one-step exfoliating peel resurfaces, clarifies and firms the skin. M-61 Vitablast C Serum ($92) Packed with concentrated vitamin C, this face serum protects skin from environmental stressors and naturally brightens skin. Lune+Aster RealGlow Primer ($30) For makeup that will outlast any late-night holiday party, prep your face with this lightdiffusing primer made with vitamin E, licorice and appleseed extract.

Probiotics for Your Face? Products from LaFlore help balance good bacteria on your skin.

By now you’ve probably heard about the benefits of taking probiotics to help boost your gut health, but what about slathering them on your face? While you could simply apply a yogurt mask, the luxury skincare line LaFlore is just one of many new skincare products developed with live probiotics. So how does it work? The brand offers a three-step system with a Probiotic Cleanser, Daily Defense Moisturizer and Serum Concentrate that are designed to balance good bacteria on your skin. “Unlike other skincare products, LaFlore gets to the root of the issue and targets skin dysfunction at its core,” says Maya Ivanjesku, V.P. of R&D LaFlore Skincare. “It goes to work to enhance the good flora, tackle unwanted flora and allow skin to function properly on its own. With consistent and continued use, skin will be renewed and collagen and elastin production will be improved, which means fewer lines.” laflore.com

Running Wild If you’re running in a holiday 5K—like the “Turkey Trot,” perhaps—it’s time to get serious and train. Don Wennerstrom, owner of Fort Lauderdale’s longtime Running Wild store, shares four tips for crossing the finish line. TIP #1: It can be daunting to start out running

an entire distance, so build up gradually. Make it a goal to jog to a telephone pole and then walk to the next (for recovery). This challenges your mind, not just your body. TIP #2: Eat healthy. Cut out junk food and get

plenty of sleep.

TIP #3: Pack energy gels, which help

provide necessary nutrients to replace what is lost through sweat—primarily sodium and potassium. TIP #4: If you want to meet and train with

other runners, Running Wild has a free 5K “Funky Fun Run” at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday that weaves down scenic A1A and ends with sharing Funky Buddha beer on the pool deck of the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort. Running Wild, 2563 Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale; 954-565-9400; runningwild.com

Fiery Fall

Forget apple-picking this autumn—go for this libation instead. Want to indulge in a fall cocktail, but could do without the guilt that comes with it? Take a cue from Brimstone Woodfire Grill, with locations in Doral and Pembroke Pines, and make this Fiery Appletini ($14), which combines two of autumn’s classic ingredients: antioxidantrich cinnamon and apples.

FIERY APPLETINI RECIPE ■ Fill a shaker 3/4 full with ice. ■ Add 1-1/2 ounces of Jack Fire Whiskey, 1/2 ounce of Cointreau, and a teaspoon of cane sugar ■ Cover and shake for 10 to 15 seconds, or until condensation forms on the outside of the shaker ■ Rim your martini glass with cinnamon sugar and strain cocktail into glass. Garnish with a bruléed apple slice. Brimstone Woodfire Grill, 14575 SW 5th St., Pembroke Pines, 954-430-2333; 8300 NW 36th St., Doral; 786-837-8960; brimstonewoodfiregrill.com

Channe Sports broadcaster, NFL Sideline reporter, entertainment host and entrepreneur PHILANTHROPY: Dining for a Difference, a nonprofit organization benefiting various charities, such as Cystic Fibrosis, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity and Alzheimer’s Association What made you start Dining for a Difference? I had been partnering with charities for about two years and decided to do something more intimate and personal than a gala. So I arranged for 30 to 40 people to meet at different restaurants, get speakers, and then pair with a charity. Guests don’t pay, food and wine are donated, and there is no pressure. People give if they want to. I do it every quarter. It’s fun to raise money, have fun and enjoy dinner for a good cause. Why is it important to help charities like these? I think everyone should help each other. I am persistent, but not pushy. Dining for a Difference is a no-nonsense way to reach out, and there is a domino effect. I know a lot of sports stars from my work, and I asked NFL star Olivier Vernon to speak at one event. He was touched and donated money. The charities are very excited when we help them, which makes me feel fulfilled and useful in the world. What are some of your favorite causes? I have a baby due very soon. At a recent shower, I decided to deliver a lot of the baby gifts to Holy Cross Hospital for families who can’t afford to buy things like baby seats, for their newborns. I want my baby to learn that life means you have to give to others. I’m setting an example early.

Both of your daughters have Type 2 wheelchairbound SMA. How did Cure SMA come about? Jennifer: When both of us were told by doctors that there is no treatment or hope for SMA patients, it was hard to accept. My daughter Madison is now 10 after being diagnosed at age one. In 2008, I started the South Florida chapter of Cure SMA and began doing walks, dinners and small fundraisers in hopes of raising awareness and finding a cure. Fiorenna’s daughter, Mia, now 8, was diagnosed when she was two. In 2010, we met as mothers and started Gala of Hope a year later to fight this battle, which affects one in every 11,000 babies born. You have raised $1 million with your annual gala. Has this led to any breakthrough drugs for SMA? Our funding for lifesaving research has led to a breakthrough drug called Spinraza (TM), the first ever FDA-approved medication for SMA. It attacks the underlying genetics of the disease, which is carried by the parents. We see improvement already with Madison after only four injections. Mia had her fourth injection recently and already has faster movements, and she feels fantastic. The medication stops the girls from getting weaker. Before they had this drug, they lost muscles each year. How do you feel about the progress you are making? Nothing was better than when Jennifer called me crying last December 23 to say that this drug was approved by the FDA! It was a pretty emotional day to learn we had the first ever treatment to stop our kids from getting weaker. We are on the verge of more breakthroughs, and thrilled that our seventh Gala of Hope, November 16, at the W Fort Lauderdale, will be so successful.

Heather

Kuhl Licensed psychologist and founder/ director of Kuhl Psychological Services

PHILANTHROPY: Give Back for Special Equestrians, which raises money to provide therapeutic riding scholarships for children and veterans who cannot afford these services How did you get involved with therapeutic horseback riding? Horses have been a part of my life for the last 33 years. About 10 years ago, I met a therapist who used horses as part of her approach with clients, which I later learned was termed equine-assisted therapy. I started researching this and was excited to read about the benefits to children and adults. And I was ecstatic to think I could merge my two passions—horses and psychology. So when the opportunity to start a nonprofit organization presented itself, I was all in. How has the charity helped kids and veterans? For a child with physical disabilities, therapeutic riding improves balance, strengthens muscles, improves trunk control, helps sensory and motor development, and aims to improve handeye coordination. It is also helpful with speech and language delays or autistic spectrum disorders. Language tasks can be incorporated into therapeutic riding lessons, or children have the opportunity to talk to their horse or pony. For veterans, therapeutic riding can offer many of the same benefits, especially when recovering from physical injuries sustained in battle. In addition, equine-assisted therapy can be less threatening when compared to traditional therapy for veterans coping with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or depression. The idea of sitting in a confined office space where a veteran is expected to talk about trauma and life difficulties can be difficult. Equine therapy offers veterans an alternate option where they attend sessions outdoors at a horse farm with individualized therapeutic activities with the horses rather than talking about their problems. What satisfaction do you get helping people with physical, mental and emotional disabilities? There is nothing quite like seeing the smiles on the faces of the children and adults we help. The happiness and gratitude the parents exude as they get the opportunity to witness their loved one independent on the horse and free from disability, if even for a brief moment, is wonderful to see.

Jeremy

Founder and CEO of Coastal Wealth, a member of Mass Mutual Financial Group

PHILANTHROPY: Seventy percent of Coastal Wealth employees are involved in 33 charities that contribute a combined 233 hours of community service a month, to charities such as Make-a-Wish, American Cancer Society, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, United Way of Broward County, Kiwanis and Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center How did you get interested in giving back? Growing up in Pennsylvania, my parents always gave back. After I graduated from college, I thought about joining the Peace Corps but I knew my heart was in business—I had the mind of a capitalist and the heart of a social worker. So I combined my passions and made it part of our company culture to give back in ways that align with employees’ interests. What have your efforts done for area charities? Our team members are involved with local food banks that help support men, women and children in need of food assistance. There is one person who donates large quantities of food from a side family business; another likes to serve dinner and put a smile on someone’s face. We also offer pro bono marketing for a few places, and I am an active volunteer for SCORE in Broward County, where I help entrepreneurs start, develop and grow their businesses. What does your staff get out of giving back? We believe that to do well, we must do good—to our clients, staff, agents and community. Not only does it feel great inside to help others, but also working collectively as a team in a firm with a family feel to serve others brings us closer together. This creates a synergy that makes us better in business.

Martin Founder and CEO of Optime Consulting, a multinational marketing and sales firm headquartered in Weston PHILANTHROPY: The Optime 5K Run, which raises money that has been used to build the Optime Innovation Room, an advanced techbehavorial preschool classroom at United Community Options (UCO) Broward What is the Optime Innovation Room? A green dream is a classroom designed to boost imagination, embrace education and reward progress and success. Our main objective is to engage with educators, parents and kids to define attainable behavior goals that show progress, recognition and ultimately a sense of pride that can be contagious. This classroom, in lime green and light aqua with recessed lighting, provides a bright, refreshing new space that the UCO center deserves. It was created to make a change in the way education is viewed for kids and adults with developmental disabilities. Why has it become a success? Circle Time starts the day on a bright note by welcoming the kids with top-of-the-line technology like the Tech Wall, where technology and learning become synonymous. Imagination Area is a stage for plays imagined, works of art created, and creativity run wild. Quiet Room is a relaxing and comforting environment designed to reduce stress. Master Area is designed for teachers to plan their day. It becomes a meeting spot all day long for students and teachers. All of these areas create a classroom where challenges become opportunities and dreams a reality, offering a tremendous environment where children are able to nurture their physical, emotional, intellectual and social skills. They love it! How has the Innovation Room and its success changed your life? My life has become more valuable through my philanthropy. I believe that everything I do should have a purpose. It makes my heart full to see the smiles on the faces of the UCO team and students. (There are more than 1,800 infants, children and adults with developmental disabilities in UCO of South Florida.) So I am thankful that I am a leader who can help others strive and achieve a better quality of life.

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: A horse-drawn carriage ride is just one of a number of popular activities at Paws Up; the 3,250-square-foot Wilderness Estates accommodate four to eight guests and come with a six-person hot tub on the private deck outside, and (lower right) a stone fireplace, vaulted ceilings and rustic luxury inside.

Step out of the Missoula, Montana, airport and breathe

deeply. The air is fragrant in Big Sky Country. Locals call it “Cowboy Cologne”—the sage that grows wild and scents the air and ranch hands that are abundant in Greenough, a 45-minute drive from Missoula International Airport, where the day we arrived 12 private planes were landing, many with passengers heading to our same destination. Carved wooden signs pop up like prairie dogs to announce the impending arrival at Paws Up, a 37,000-acre working cattle ranch that takes glamping to another level, challenges the most adroit city slicker and checks boxes off an adventurer’s bucket list in a matter of days. It’s not difficult to stop and smell the roses—or the sage, as it were. Here, time slows down and history swirls amidst unapologetic luxury. You’re treading in the same footsteps as Charles Lindbergh, who landed his private plane nearby to visit his ranch house, and further back in time, explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who ventured through these vast acres in 1806 on their return from the Pacific Northwest. They allegedly surveyed their surroundings atop a 175-foot cliff upon which you can (and should!) rappel. Originally intended as a private community and instead opening as a luxury ranch at the insistence of friends who thought it should be shared, owners David and Nadine Lipson named the resort “Paws Up” as a nod to dogs who raise their paws in happiness (avid animal lovers, the Lipsons have donated $250,000 to the Humane Society of Western Montana and host the annual Canine Classic run/hike, which draws 50,000 people). An interior designer, Nadine decorated the resort’s opulent accommodations, which range from luxury homes to safari-style tents, all spread apart on the acreage for unparalleled privacy and named for the camps Lewis and Clarks set up along their 7,000+-mile expedition. Wilderness Estate homes are richly decorated in fine western style with art and antiquities Nadine collected over the years placed throughout three master suites (all with large en-suite master bathrooms, cowhide rugs, midnight kitchens and walk-in closets), a loft game-room, cook’s kitchen and great room with a soaring vaulted ceiling and massive stone fireplace. set into the hallway, while plush runners laid over slate floors ensure tootsies stay warm. You’ll want to be up early to enjoy a cuppa joe (there’s a Keurig in every home) on a 1,700-square-foot porch and watch the world go by, which in this case ranges from curious deer to soaring hawks and energetic squirrels. Here, the city is left far, far behind. Every luxury home, cabin and estate (ranging from 1,100 to 3,250 square feet) comes with a (seriously fun) metallic green Kia Soul in which to traverse dirt roads for five-minute drives to the Village (for casual dining), Spa Town and Wilderness Outpost, where all activities, from cattle drives to archery, commence. Those who don’t want to drive can request transportation via the Paws Up app, downloadable upon check-in and synced to your phone through a personal code. Divided into two topic headings, Concierge or Transportation, someone is on call 24 hours to manage any request. Should you forget toothpaste or contact lens solution, simply send a message. Want to know what the weather will be like? How soon the driver will arrive? How tall the cliff is off which you’re rappelling? Send a message. Responses are nearly instantaneous. Luxury Camps with their safari-style tents can be booked May through September and are set apart on the ranch’s most picturesque spots, most on the banks of the legendary Blackfoot River (the movie A River Runs Through It was filmed nearby). Walk to the Paws Up Village along the river bank (about two miles from most camps) to explore and commune with nature, or request transportation via the app or Camp Butler. Yes, Butler.

Each of the six camps has a dedicated butler, who serves breakfast and dinner and is the personal contact for six one- to three-bedroom sumptuous tents, all of which are glamorously appointed with chandeliers, ensuite baths with heated slate floors, mammoth showers and a private deck with hand-carved furniture. A path leads guests to the camp’s dining pavilion, whose private chef whips up healthy breakfasts and indulgences like local Montana bacon (don’t miss it) and huckleberry pancakes, and family-style dinners that include locally sourced ingredients, vegetarian delicacies and the ranch’s own award-winning Certified Angus Beef. In the evenings, gather around the campfire, share stories, sing “Home on the Range” after a few glasses of tasty Macallan scotch, and elevate your s’mores game with the Paws Up “certified Smoreologist,” Conor Dannis, who visits camps and takes the gooey, chocolatey delicacy to another level. Cuisine can’t be overstated here. Executive Chef Ben Jones oversees the camp dining, casual Trough restaurant in the Village, fine dining at Pomp (William Clark’s nickname for Sacajawea’s son) and Chuck Wagon dinners, a popular option for families. Throughout the year, he hosts food-and-wine gatherings that range from Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to Winterfest (January 25-28, 2018), Montana Master Grillers (May 25-28, 2018), the annual Montana Master Chefs event (September 2018), a stream of James Beard award winners, Top Chef stars and a Cookbook Live series with notable authors.

To work off the inevitable calories (and check multiple bucket-list adventure items), sign up for more than 50 adventures and scream like a kid riding an ATV through the wilderness, rappelling down a 175-foot cliff, white-water rafting and fly-fishing down the Blackfoot River or whooping it up on an authentic cattle drive (no joke—you’re herding cattle to new pastures and watering holes). Learn to shoot pics “from a worm’s point of view” hiking the wilderness with your iPhone and resident photographer Stuart Thurlkill, and “Get Primitive” with mountain man Gary Steele, who teaches tracking, fire-making and primitive skills, and, as he says, “adventures kids can take home and do with their parents. I get them away from the screens and tablets; once outside, nature does its work.” Wintertime activities are just as robust, with dogsledding, ice-skating, snowmobiling and the newest and most outrageous activity, Skijoring, a sport popular in Nordic countries whereby skiers are pulled by dogs or a horse. With wobbly legs, head to Spa Town, an inviting collection of spa tents that look like a miners’ encampment and where you’ll find some of the best spa treatments and yoga classes this side of the Rockies. Then maybe it’s back to your wilderness home for a soak in the six-person, outdoor hot tub. You’ll never look at camping the same way again. We then filled our trailer and headed to Immokalee to do it again. Giving back to those in need is a very important part of our day-today philosophy. We began collecting for Harvey and had half of the trailer filled. When Irma was too close, we held off on sending our trailer for safety reasons. It worked out that we were able to use the donations right in our own backyard. Steven G. has a huge heart, and his team is right there with him. We are huge supporters of Artists with Autism, ALFAIT, Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, Humane Society, Operation Lift Hope, and many more that are dear to our heart. We have met so many wonderful people, some strangers, now friends who have opened their hearts and wallets and helped us to support so many less fortunate.

Mama mia! Authentic Italian cuisine is just down the street in Weston, at Bellini Italian Bistro.

I

f you spend any time with Matteo Migliorini, Italian-born executive chef and co-owner of Bellini Italian Bistro in Weston, you’ll hear the phrase “Mama mia!” naturally roll off his tongue—referring to South Florida traffic, to what passes as “authentic” Italian cuisine, and really anything else that prompts astonishment. Born near Stresa, a picturesque town on Lake Maggiore closeby the Italian alps, Chef Migliorini began his culinary studies at age 14 in the prestigious E. Maggia cooking school and has spent the rest of his life crisscrossing the globe and honing his skills at hotspots such as London’s famed members-only Harry’s Bar. London proved too cold and rainy for him, so Migliorini packed up his kitchen knives and headed to Florida. It was during a stint at Miami Beach’s Bice restaurant that he met Diego Ucciferri and the two decided to realize their dream and open Bellini Italian Bistro, first on Miami Beach and now, their newest, in Weston. Since 2012, Bellini has generated a loyal following in Weston for the classic Italian cuisine Chef Migliorini has perfected for the last 35 years: tomatoes, Parmesan cheese and prosciutto direct from his homeland; housemade pizza dough that rises for two days; freshly made pappardelle, fettuccine, gnocchi and ravioli, and weekly specials that have a cult fol-

lowing among the locals. Weston residents Aldo and Vicki Bartolone say they visit at least a few times a month for the “superb cuisine that’s Michelin Five Star at least,” raves Mr. Bartolone, who grew up on Italian fare and travels to Italy often. “We’re pretty finicky about food, and this is absolutely the best and most authentic.” His favorite dishes include the appetizer of Polipo Grigliato con Sedano ed Olive (grilled octopus served with black olives, celery, extra virgin olive oil and lemon) and the Linguine Frutti di Mare (linguini with shrimp, mussels, scallops, calamari, clams, garlic and tomato sauce). The robust menu is extensive and broken into sections by antipasti, insalate, pizza, pasta, main courses and dessert making it easy to navigate.

“We’re pretty finicky about food, and this is absolutely the best and most

authentic.”— Vicki Bartolone

Nevertheless, keep your ears open for daily specials, which are so popular that our lovely server, Esther, told us locals will call ahead and inquire if certain ones are on the menu that night. Favorites include pappardelle with braised short ribs, homemade black squid-ink linguine served with fresh tomatoes, white wine, Italian parsley and prawns, braised veal osso bucco, fettuccine with duck ragout, rack of lamb with rosemary demiglace, swordfish with parsley, lemon, shallots and extra virgin olive oil, a 14-ounce ribeye with peppercorn sauce and roasted sweet potatoes, and a mouthwatering zucchini flower appetizer, made tempura-style and stuffed with ricotta cheese, anchovies, basil, fresh pepper, Parmesan cream cheese and Prosciutto di Parma. The selection of daily specials is hard to beat; however, there are several menu standouts that deserve to be mentioned, including the simple yet delectable appetizers of prosciutto with melon and fresh mozzarella ($12); Polpette (meatballs in tomato sauce with ricotta cheese) ($9), and the Saute di Cozze, sautéed mussels with choice of white wine or red sauce ($12). Don’t miss the Tonno Bellini, a blackened tuna served with

cannellini beans, avocado, cherry tomato, onion and spicy mayo ($32). Once a daily special, Chef Migliorini added it to the menu by popular demand, and it is exquisite. Though it may be difficult, save room for dessert, especially the Nutella Pizza, a 10-inch “pie” made in the restaurant’s wood oven, covered in Nutella and topped with powdered sugar and strawberries upon request ($10), and the lighter-than-air Panna Cotta con Fragole, served with fresh strawberries ($8). Everything that comes out of Bellini’s lively kitchen speaks to Executive Chef Migliorini’s Italian heritage and passion for flavorful, authentic cuisine. “I create classic cuisine using fresh ingredients and a-la-minute preparation,” he says, “nothing is ever pre-cooked.” Mama mia! Can you imagine? Bellini Italian Bistro is located at 2780 Weston Road, Weston, and is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. ALFA ROMEO

Giulia Sedan Stelvio SUV AND

Car-isma: Alfa Romeo’s sparkling new sedan and crossover are making Italian cars great again. By Steve Siler

A

long time has passed—22 years, in fact—since Alfa Romeo stopped selling cars here in the United States, and even longer since Alfa Romeo sold great cars here in the United States. Sure, a few of its gorgeous, quarter-million-dollar 8C coupes and roadsters made their way into collectors’ hands here circa 2010-2012, and since 2014, Alfa has offered a less expensive but infinitely less satisfying mid-engine sports car called the 4C here, too. But Alfa hasn’t sold any cars of any significance here since the last wedgy 164 sedan rolled off the boat in 1995, so you get a pass for not knowing anything about this storied Italian automaker and the two vehicles that are leading its charge back into the lucrative U.S. luxury automobile market: 1) Alfa Romeo was founded in 1910 in the famously fashionable city of Milan, and 2) it started racing in 1911. In other words, the new Alfa Romeo Giulia (pronounced “Julia”) sport sedan and Stelvio SUV have style and speed in their very DNA. They may look different in profile and face different competitors, but they share a common platform, are motivated by the same turbocharged four- and six-engine choices, and after driving both, I can say they’re as rich in character as pasta fagioli is in flavor. Furthermore, at the time of this writing, the high-performance, 505-hp Quadrifoglio models of each held respective world records around Germany’s infa-

118

NOVEMBER 2017

mous, 12.9-mile Nürburgring racetrack, effectively earning the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglios the distinction of being the world’s fastest sedan and SUV, respectively. All this while looking and feeling just so deliciously Italian. So, ben tornado—or welcome back— Alfa Romeo! We’ve missed you.

2018 ALFA ROMEO GIULIA

(BASE PRICE: $38,990, QUADRIFOGLIO: $72,995)

While it’s all too fashionable for modern sport sedans and crossovers to don the so-called “predatory look,” the Giulia has a death stare menacing enough to send its competitors scrambling away in search of their mommies. Like the Lexus IS, BMW 3-Series and Infiniti Q50 sedans, the Giulia is a rear-wheel-drive compact sedan, a set-up that gives it such a sexy, long hood and a rear-set cabin. To anyone familiar with

Wheel Life

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Alfa Romeo’s stylistic history, the V-shaped grille and lateral lower air intakes make the Giulia unmistakable as such, though the Giulia’s Alfaness is expressed with particular intensity with its elongated headlamps that dip down along the bottom yet cut straight across the top. Together with the broad chin, they impart the car with a sense of formidable width. Further back, the design grows more conventional, not unlike that of the 3-Series only more voluptuous, terminating in a ducktail decklid and rear bumper that could have come off a Ferrari. While Alfa Romeo is ostensibly a luxury brand, the Giulia’s interior is decidedly free of frivolous poofery, no kitschy clocks or gathered leather—that’s the realm of its fellow FCA-owned Maserati brand. Rather, the Giulia’s cabin is all business, with firm but perfectly bolstered sport seats, low-gloss materials mostly rendered in black, and large round instrument dials nestled in Alfa’s signature dual-pod design. Like the BMW 3-Series and Lexus IS, the Giulia is tight on rear-seat space, and the slick-looking infotainment system is controlled by a dial-type controller that resembles those of Audi, BMW and MercedesBenz without working quite as well as any of them, but those gripes pale next to the pleasure of gripping one of the industry’s best steering wheels, with its flat-bottom, thin-rimmed design. One press of the Engine Start button sprouting from the steering wheel hub fires the standard Giulia’s 2.0-liter turbocharged fourcylinder, a 280-hp powerhouse, to life. The standard transmission is an eight-speed automatic with manual shifting enabled by gigantic shift paddles behind the wheel. Turn that wheel and response is immediate, with brilliant body control and copious steering feel even in aggressive corners. Enthusiasts will certainly prefer the more tail-happy rear-drive model, but all-wheel drive is available, too. And then there’s the aforementioned Giulia Quadrifoglio, with its 505-hp twin-turbo V-6, standard all-wheel drive and choice of sixspeed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions. Nearly double the price of the base Giulia, the Quadrifoglio dials everything the base Giulia delivers in terms of looks and feel up to 11, and it only seems pricey until you drive a BMW M3 or Mercedes-AMG C63 and realize they’re nowhere near as fun yet can cost much more. I only got to drive this one about 20 miles, but they’re 20 miles I won’t soon forget. In a word, it’s bellissimo.

NOVEMBER 2017

Alfa Romeo Giulia

2018 ALFA ROMEO STELVIO (BASE PRICE: $42,990, QUADRIFOGLIO: TBA)

The Stelvio is basically a Giulia in SUV form. While it’s priced slightly higher, so too is its suspension, giving it greater ground clearance, which, combined with its standard all-wheel drive, affords the Stelvio nominal off-road capability. The longer roof and hatch-style cargo access add some genuine utility, too. That said, it’s no Suburban in terms of space; indeed, the Stelvio should really be considered more of a sport sedan with a backpack than a conventional SUV in designer duds. If you want to know what the Stelvio is like to drive, just go back and re-read what we said about the Giulia—it’s tight inside, especially in back, and pretty much all of the Giulia’s character-rich interior elements are installed verbatim. The headlamps look even more menacing on the road with the entire span of their brow line illuminated in LEDs. Arriving as it did a few months after the Giulia, the Stelvio may just be hitting dealerships as you read this, but it’s widely expected to be more popular than the Giulia once word gets out how good it is. As for the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, those aren’t slated to arrive until 2018 at a price point expected to be a touch higher than its sedan counterpart. To test drive one of the models reviewed here, visit Rick Case Alfa Romeo, 3500 Weston Rd., Davie.
