Introduction Innovation is at the core of life sciences, more than in any other industry. Belgium has always proved to be a country that shows new ingenious ways of putting science to good use for the benefit of millions of people worldwide: in pharmaceuticals, in biotechnology, in medical technologies and in all kinds of specialized supporting activities. Extensive life science facilities supporting high-level technology industry, financial benefits for R&D companies, international collaborations that guarantee regular cash flow, world-renowned research institutes and academic excellence, the promising product pipeline, the central position in Europe, ‌ are important assets that make Belgium in a pole position in the life science sector.

Belgium only comprises 30,528 km2 but houses almost 300 life science companies with biotech activities.

In the life science companies, over 24,000 employees are active. Most of these companies are related to health care, but Belgium also has a strong representation of agricultural and industrial biotech companies. The growing life science hubs near the 8 main universities house most biotech companies on some 19 research parks and 23 incubators (with life science activity), research institutes, academic hospitals and clinical research organizations. Biotech companies have access to more than 500,000 sq.ft of highly flexible infrastructure. Additional assets for Belgium are: a supportive regulatory and political environment, a highly qualified and productive workforce, a competitive tax environment especially for research companies, a prominent location and an excellent logistical and business infrastructure.
