ART IMAGinative Stuff. There have been some mightily impressive exhibitions at INVERNESS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY (IMAG) [1] this year, with the current display of Monarch Of The Glen and Ross Sinclair’s accompanying response to it maintaining the high standard and both on until 18 Nov. They’re not done yet though and this month sees the return of works by a couple more storied painters. The FOUR PORTRAITS exhibition, which runs until 25 NOV features three paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds as well as a Thomas Gainsborough portrait from the same period. Last time works by the two artists came to IMAG they were very popular, so if you missed out then, now’s the time to check them out. In IMAG’s First Floor Foyer Gallery, again until 25 NOV you can see recent pieces by SHAUN FRASER, a glass sculptor from Inverness, whose work comments upon notions of identity, links to Highland landscape and connections with ‘place’. INVERNESS TOWNSCAPE HERITAGE community expo runs from 07 NOV–02 DEC, consisting of re-photography of the Victorian Market and Academy Street area, curated by 3rd Inverness Girls Brigade. Should be interesting. Another kind of art is examined in BRANDED (WEDS 25 OCT, 1/8/15 NOV), a series of four workshops aimed at young people, focussing on issues of personal identity and emblems. These sessions will be facilitated by artist Dean Melville. Details overleaf >.

ADOPTION WEEK SCOTLAND 20–25TH NOVEMBER Have You Ever Thought About Adoption? Adoption Week Scotland highlights the need for SINGLE PEOPLE, COUPLES and FAMILIES to come forward and consider adoption for toddlers to older primary school age children.

Urgent Message: Highland Council Fostering & Adoption Service are looking for a family to become adoptive parents for three siblings—two brothers aged ten and seven and a sister, aged 4 years old. The children have been in temporary foster care since 2015 and have been waiting a long time for a permanent family to be identified—to grow up in an environment they feel safe, protected and loved unconditionally. They have

had a difficult start to life, but they have the potential and the personalities to achieve much, their future is bright.

gymnastic and loves taking part in the after school drama group. The younger male sibling loves gadgets and gravitates towards them and also enjoys watching DVDs, especially anything to do with cars. Both boys try really hard and are enthusiastic about school and have come a long way in a supportive school setting.

Both boys are very like-able individuals; are warm and engage well with adults, enjoy receiving comfort and cuddles. They are both very active and enjoy a range of sports. They are football mad and both love watching and playing football and going to live Their younger sister enjoys spending time games when they can. with her big brothers. The oldest male sibling She is generally happy is described as a natural and once she gets to

know you, is a chatty, friendly little girl with a good sense of humour. She is very affectionate, very active, whether in or outside the house and loves imaginative play. The children need a family who will accept them as individuals, provide consistent positive messages about their future and enable them to understand each other’s perspective from past memories to present day opportunities.

Could you provide them with stability and much needed security? We will consider people from a variety of backgrounds who can make a lifelong commitment. For more information about these children, adoption or fostering in general, please contact: Highland Council Fostering & Adoption Service 01463 703431 foster@highland.gov.uk

♥ Film…

It’s that time of year again—in addition to all the regular new cinema releases on the November schedule, we have the viewing extravaganza that is the INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL, at Eden Court (WED 08–SUN 12 NOV). This is its 15th outing and it has established itself as one of the UK’s top film festivals, easily punching above its weight. As per usual, that means lots of exclusive Scottish Premieres—28 of them at the last count—films from all over the globe (27 countries, no less), shorts, talks, old classics, big stars and new untried filmakers. All rolled into five frenzied days of constant activity and opportunity. You won’t go to every film—but you owe it to yourself to get along at least once during the event, there’s a real buzz about the venue during the festival and a cautious camaraderie among the attendees—from the “I’m about to walk into my 6th screening of the day” type to the “this is my first IFF movie”. Join in! There is nothing like enough space here to detail all the films and events on offer—there’s a decent website (invernessfilmfestival.com) and printed programme available—you can also check out the full timetable on our inside back pages. Some highlights then: the festival always opens and closes big, this year no exception with Emma Stone and Steve Carell (as tennis stars Billie Jean King & Bobby Riggs) in BATTLE OF THE SEXES [1] (WED 08), well ahead of its official UK release, and final film the much-anticipated new Martin McDonagh film THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI [2] (SUN 12), starring Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, and Peter Dinklage. McDonagh is one of our absolute best film-makers right now with his smart sense of plot and dialogue drawing from the very best sources, like Tarantino and the Coens. Sandwiched in between these Premieres you’ll find Cannes successes, like Jury Prize winner LOVELESS (WED 08), Palm D’Or nominee HAPPY END (FRI 10)—with Isabelle Huppert & Toby Jones—Palm D’Or winner THE SQUARE [12] (SUN 12) and documentary THE FLORIDA PROJECT (THU 09)—which earned a 10 minute Cannes standing ovation! Robert Pattinson returns to form in GOOD TIME [9] (THU 09), Jake Gyllenhaal plays Boston hero Jeff Bauman in STRONGER [11] (FRI 10), and Annette Benning, Jamie Bell and Julie Walters star in FILM STARS DON’T DIE IN LIVERPOOL [10] (FRI 10). All film buffs will be painfully aware of Tommy Wiseau’s ‘The Room’—often lauded as the worst movie ever made—but a different way to get introduced to this crazy world comes with James Franco’s THE DISASTER ARTIST [3] (SUN 12) adapted from (Wisaeu’s co-star) Greg Sestero’s hilarious book. Fans of Saturday Night Live should head for SNL team written & directed BRIGSBY BEAR [13] (SAT 11), or you might want to celebrate Takashi Miike’s 100th film, BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL [14] (FRI 10), or some quirky dark Estonian fantasy laced with black humour and romance in NOVEMBER [15] (SUN 12). There’s also a fest-within-a-fest, a FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL with six screenings, including the excellent Vincent Cassel in GAUGIN (SUN 12). And you can vote for the prestigious IFF Audience Award—which never fails to throw up a brilliant winner! So, what about away from the Festival? Let’s break this down in simple terms for you: THE ‘BIG’ RELEASES: These are expected to get lots of viewers and will be varying degrees of competent—from Kenneth Branagh’s star-studded MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS [4] (03 NOV Vue, 24 EC) to that aforementioned BATTLE OF THE SEXES (08 IFF EC, 24 Vue), ONLY THE BRAVE [5] (10 Vue) with Josh Brolin, Miles Teller and Jeff Bridges in the timely story of the firefighters at the Arizona wildfires in June 2013, to DC’s ‘supergroup’ JUSTICE LEAGUE [7] (17 Vue)—following hot on the heels of their Wonderwoman smash. Then there’s the ‘instant classic’ comedy, Armando Iannucci’s THE DEATH OF STALIN [8] (17–23 EC) with a top cast inc. a sparkling Jason Isaacs, but—if life were so simple that top writers, director and cast meant box office gold—perhaps the best bet would be the Clooney-directed, Coen Brothers-written SUBURBICON [16] (24 Vue) with Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac. Plus music by the amazing Alexandre Desplat…

13

…NOT AS BIG, BUT GOOD ANYWAY: In date order would be PROFESSOR MARSTON & THE WONDER WOMEN (IFF 02 NOV, then from 24 NOV EC) about the psychologist who created the DC star, old fashioned UK middle-class comedy THE PARTY (03 EC), UK drama DAPHNE (13–16 EC), the greatly recently re-appraised Lynch classic TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME (20 EC) and the classy, James Ivory-penned CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (23 EC), starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. FILMS WE’RE REALLY NOT SURE ABOUT BUT, Y’KNOW, MIGHT TURN OUT TO BE FUN: This is a dangerous business—there are aspects to suggest these films may work, but there are also elements that ring potential warning bells, we’ll let you unpick which is stronger. From A BAD MOMS CHRISTMAS (03 Vue) (in film terms, the ‘C’ word usually causes alarm), Instagram generation comedy fable INGRID GOES WEST (17 Vue) with Aubrey Plaza stalking Elizabeth Olsen, and DADDY’S HOME 2 (22 Vue)—where John Lithgow and, errr, Mel Gibson play the dad’s dads... THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT: Well, they seldom moan about films, anyway—so take your pick for cinema days from THE JUNGLE BUNCH (04/05 & 18/19 EC), PADDINGTON 2 (10 Vue) the charmfest following 2014’s runaway success (now with added Hugh Grant & Brendan Gleeson), or, erm, THE STAR (24 Vue)—a US animated ‘Christian comedy’ Nativity film…

KIDS Counting The Days… It’s a dizzily exciting time of the year for kids as that run up to Xmas appears to be expanding to fill every single day with increasing levels of eager anticipation. Much of this is due to the packed programme of the inverness Winter Festival which follows the super spooky HALLOWEEN SHOW on Ness Islands (28 & 29 Oct) with the awe-inspiring BONFIRE & FIREWORKS in Bught Park on 04 Nov (more about that in our Specials section) and the CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON on 19 NOV with accompanying torchlight parade behind Santa through the streets of Inverness. There’s also a month-long ELF ON THE SHELF thing in the VICTORIAN MARKET from 01 NOV–02 DEC, that American phenomenon, which has quietly crept into this country’s consciousness as well as inspiring endless rhyming memes on the internet. The aforementioned elves will be lurking on various shelves in shop windows throughout the market for youngsters to spot.

It’s not all about pre-festive over excitement though: the SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL at EDEN COURT on 13 NOV is the Highlands’ contribution to the UK’s largest youth drama festival, enabling over 1,000 pupils of all ages & abilities to stage abridged productions in their local theatres. Heavy hitters like author Philip Pullman have expressed support for this admirable introduction to the works of the Bard, the students’ creations often investing the pieces with an energy that their elders might envy.

FRI 27 OCT

THE STORY OF THE LITTLE GENTLEMAN @ Nairn CAC 7.30pm Will you be my friend? All the Little Gentleman wants is a friend. A friend he can sit in the sun with and listen to the birds. A friend to walk with and share his cookies. But nobody seems to like the Little Gentleman and nobody wants to be his friend. The Little Gentleman thinks he will live a sad and lonely life forever... Until one day he is woken up by a curious dog who just wants to play. An energetic two-hander with an original score by Danny Krass and design by Karen Tennent, this is a playful celebration of friendship and acceptance.

The Joy of Pop. In the pantheon of Great British Pop Singers, LULU [1] is often unfairly overlooked. Perhaps it’s the fact that her biggest hit, “Shout” is perceived as little more than a demonstration of decibels, but if you dip into her work—particularly the startling stuff she recorded at Muscle Shoals in America’s Deep South which saw her produce some of the finest soul songs of the 20th century—you’ll soon realise that she deserves all the accolades going. She’ll be revisiting her greatest moments as well as numbers that have inspired her when she plays EDEN COURT on 14 NOV. If it’s anything as good as her show at the same venue last year we’re in for a treat. Another singer whose reputation has become centred around one song is JAKE BUGG [2]. “Lightning Bolt” was an irresistible slice of skiffle-pop that provided a healthy antidote to much of the morose singer-songwriter stuff by his peers that continues to clog the charts, but his ensuing output has never really recaptured that initial vim. Good things are being written about his new album though, so his appearance at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on 16 NOV might prove that he’s still worth championing. Britpop is still held close to many hearts in these climes, so SHED SEVEN’s [6] visit to Ironworks (20 NOV) should be pretty much packed out, but of all the musical movements of the late 20th century, 2–Tone was one of the most joyously inclusive—and two of that genre’s finest bands, THE SELECTER [3] and THE BEAT feat. RANKING ROGER [4] are also playing IRONWORKS on 16 NOV. Re-live the wonder... Dipping slightly further back in the 70s, SHOWADDYWADDY were no strangers to the charts with their take on rock’n’roll sounds that were retro even then. It’s little short of remarkable that they’re still together, but should provide an entertaining slice of nostalgia when they play EDEN COURT on 17 NOV. And the party vibes should continue at the same venue the following night, 18 NOV, when our very own SCOOTY & THE SKYHOOKS [5] deliver their much-loved covers of soul, pop and R’n’B standards. Some recommended classical attractions include the ESCHER QUARTET [12] playing Mozart, Mendelssohn and Grieg at NAIRN COMMUNITY CENTRE on 10 NOV; RSNO performing Beethoven’s towering Symphony No. 7—with ace principal trumpet CHRISTOPHER HART [7]—alongside works by Ravel and Neruda at EDEN COURT on 23 NOV; while the HIGHLAND HOSPITALS ANNUAL CAROL CONCERT at EDEN COURT on 26 NOV should get that Christmas spirit bubbling nicely. Folk fans are, as usual, well catered for this month, with two of Scotland’s most revered multi-instrumentalists, MAIREARAD GREEN (accordion and bagpipes) and ANNA MASSIE [8] (guitar, banjo, and fiddle) playing EDEN COURT on 07 NOV, while Carrbridge’s own RACHEL SERMANNI [10] celebrates the end of a very successful year (particularly Stateside) in a double bill with ADAM HOLMES & THE EMBERS [9] at the same venue on 17 NOV. Also on 17 NOV you can see the highly acclaimed traditional musicians THE ELEPHANT SESSIONS at TOOTH & CLAW. On the gypsy-folk and jazz side, don’t miss one of the best Grapelli-esque experiences Scotland has to offer when ROSE ROOM [11] play NAIRN COMMUNITY & ART CENTRE on SAT 04 NOV.

Eden Court Lates Opportunity for local musicians and bands

EC Lates take place on the foyer stage at Eden Court following performances in the theatre venues. Audiences are invited to continue their visit by staying and listening to free music while enjoying their first class bar facilities. Not only is this creating a great atmosphere to hang out in, it’s providing an excellent new opportunity for local talent to get seen and heard. They usually require 2X 45 minute sets—with start times slightly flexible according to the events going on at the time. A vocal PA is available. A fee is provided and agreed in advance. Calling all local bands/artists, you have nothing to lose— send a biog, photo and a link to sample music to lates@eden-court.co.uk NB: due to volume of applicants, not all submissions are replied to.

County Coyled. With the international break finally out of the way this is the time when domestic football teams are at last given a chance to build up some sort of momentum. Or, in the case of ROSS COUNTY to make a fresh start, their underwhelming beginning to the season (albeit against tough teams) resulting in a change of managership and the surprising, if welcome, choice of OWEN COYLE as the new boss. With plenty of experience down south he seems like a great choice for getting County back on track and games against MOTHERWELL (04 NOV), CELTIC (18 NOV) & DUNDEE (02 DEC) should give us some idea of the imprint he intends to put on the team ahead of the busy Xmas period. ICT are having another desperately depressing season and the prospect of a second successive relegation is becoming a very real possibility. Time for them to dig in and remember their top-flight credentials, games against BRECHIN (11 NOV) and ST MIRREN (25 NOV) giving them the opportunity to do just that. Last month’s Loch Ness Marathon was the most successful yet and judging by the number of folk to be seen regularly pounding the streets, running is more popular than ever. Expect a healthy turnout then at Forres Harriers’ BRODIE CASTLE 10K on 05 NOV.

Let’s Dance. It’s another strong month at Eden Court, further proof of what a strong legacy the departing Colin Marr is leaving, with dance particularly well represented. We’re always pleased when SCOTTISH BALLET [1] come to town and their latest production at EDEN COURT on 03 & 04 NOV looks like maintaining their high standards. It’s a double bill of two very contrasting works, The Fairy’s Kiss and The Rite of Spring, the two sharing glorious scores by STRAVINSKY. Inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s The Ice Maiden, The Fairy’s Kiss (Le Baiser de la Fée) was first brought to The Royal Ballet’s stage by renowned Scottish choreographer Kenneth MacMillan. Adding a dark edge to an unsettling tale. 25 years after MacMillan’s death, GARY HARRIS has created stunning new sets and costumes for this landmark season. The Rite of Spring is one of Stravinsky’s most challenging compositions and the accompanying ballet explores the anguish of moral conflict, brought to an end by violent sacrifice. Choreographed by Scottish Ballet’s Artistic Director CHRISTOPHER HAMPSON, it was widely acclaimed following its 2013 performance at the Edinburgh International Festival. An equally groundbreaking dance production is Vanishing Point and Scottish Ensemble’s collaboration, TABULA RASA [2] at EDEN COURT on 16 NOV. With the musicians forming an integral part of the drama, this visionary production explores the documented role of Arvo Pärt’s haunting piece from which it takes its title in the care of patients during their final days. A life-affirming exploration of humanity, suffering—and the uplifting power, and endless importance, of art. Rather cheerier physicality comes from TRASH TEST DUMMIES [3] at EC on 05 NOV. The Australian slapstick comedy trio demonstrate gobsmacking acrobatic circus skills while raising plenty of laughs along the way, often while bursting out of wheelie bins. Don’t try this at home, kids. FINDING JOY [4] at EC on 09 NOV is another production finding humour in the unlikeliest of sources, this time dementia. The non-speaking, full-mask show from the excellent Vamos Theatre company looks at the playful relationship between 83 year old Joy and her grandson Danny, lifting your spirits despite the subject matter. Heartwarming.

1

More conventional comedy, but again inspired by ageing, comes from the brilliant JON RICHARDSON [5], whose stand-up show THE OLD MAN is at EC on 13 NOV. For many the real star of 8 Out Of 10 Cats, his droll, slightly neurotic observations are always a treat. Finally, wholehearted recommendations for two different visions of the contemporary world at EC. OUR FATHERS [6] on 08 NOV is inspired by Father and Son, Edmund Gosse’s Victorian memoir about growing up in an evangelical Christian family, this playful, personal collaboration between ROB DRUMMOND and NICHOLAS BONE (who’ll both be giving a pre-show talk) explores faith, family and conflict resolution in the 21st century. LOVE AND INFORMATION on 22 NOV sees one of our finest playwrights, CARYL CHURCHILL, constructing an exhilarating and funny theatrical kaleidoscope that asks questions about how we live in a world bombarded by information. EATING OUT

Dows Bar & Bistro Balloan Road, Inverness 01463 418 121 If there’s a common thread running through our reviews of restaurants where we’ve chowed down in the last twelve months, it’s the sheer variety of locations and environments in which we’ve eaten. From scenic riverside eateries to grand mansions, industrial estate cafes to a plethora of hotels, all within a few miles of Inverness, demonstrating how that place has matured and finally begun to feel comfortable, not to say confident, in its city status. With a growing city, you obviously need to build places for people to live and it’s to one of those estates that we repair this month…

walkways, pavementless roads, cul de sacs full of all the shops the local community might need, and tying it all together, the modern pebbledashed pub.

There was another hostelry, which shall remain nameless, across the Hilton/Milton border, that judging by tales from those who went there was not a place for the faint-hearted, but that is long gone and Dows now acts as the hub of the community, its smart interior emphasising just how successful it has presumably proved to be. Even on a typically driech autumn day when that omnipresent pebbledash on surrounding houses looks at its Dows is situated on the boundary very worst and the wind’s whipping between the 70s & 80s housing up a hoolie outside, Dows provides estates of Hilton and Milton in a calm sanctuary. the south of Inverness, a little trip The place is split into two, with back to the future, when the new a Sports Bar providing for pool, town planners were confidently darts and footie needs, while the laying out a vision for modern Lounge Bar and adjoining bistro family life; those pebbledashed is a bit quieter, except perhaps houses so popular in Scotland,

on karaoke and quiz nights. We eat in the spacious, light-filled conservatory at the back and though there’s the occasional drip of rain through the ceiling, it’s a nice bright room for lunch. There are only a couple of other groups of diners, but you get the impression it must be packed in the evening and at weekends, judging by the number of tables. There’s a smart, modern menu to go with the surroundings too, based around traditional pub grub, but tweaked enough to make it rather more interesting than what’s on offer in many other similar establishments around town. Chef Chris Crombie and his brigade are out to prove that with a little care and imagination you can elevate tried and trusted dishes into something a bit special. Take my starter for example. Billed as a Salmon & Caper Salad, it’s actually an amalgam of

Not perhaps the most memorable of desserts, but nicely presented with a fruit coulis and well made/sourced ice cream.

My pal enjoys his starter of Oatmeal Coated Brie. The use of oatmeal for the deep-fried cheese provides a nice crisp contrast to the unctuousness within, while accompanying cranberry mayo & onion marmalade is a neat touch.

My pal’s pudding of Waffles with Ice Cream is again competent if not groundbreaking, an interesting caramel-type sauce adding to the richness of the whole thing. Cup winner. . . HSPC caught up with Gerald Cooper Cup winner David Gallie and asked the following questions: • 1) Congratulations on winning the Gerald Cooper HSPC Memorial Cup, is this the first time you’ve run the Loch ness marathon? Thanks! I’ve actually run it twice before. • 2) Were you happy with your time? Was it a PB? Yes, I was pleased with my time, and it was a personal best. • 3) Have you run any other marathons? How does the Loch Ness marathon compare? I’ve also run the Glasgow Marathon in 2000, Loch Ness is more scenic! • 4) Do you have a favourite type of music you listen to while running? I don’t listen to music while I’m running. • 5) If you had to run a marathon in what you’re wearing right now could you do it? Yes, but slower! • 6) What’s the hardest thing about completing a marathon? The hardest part is doing all the training beforehand. • 7) Do you have any running heroes? Joss Naylor (MBE - an English fell runner who has set a number of running records), and Billy Bland (long distance runner and prominent fell runner). • 8) Finally which charity will you be donating the prize money to? I’ll be donating the prize money to Highland Disability Swim team.
