WELCOME I cannot believe how quickly this past year has flown by. It seems like only a few weeks ago I was finalising things on last year’s edition of the Introbiz Expo magazine!

So much has changed and developed for us over the past 12 months – as a business, we’ve seen more and more businesses joining the network, we’ve hosted many different types of events and we’ve seen thousands of pounds’ worth of business made within the network, which is great to see! We’re very excited to be coming to you from the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff today. This is our second consecutive year here, and we couldn’t be happier about that fact! Today, you’ll see over 200 exhibitors from all sorts of industries, so if you’re looking to add that something special to your business, make sure you go and ask them plenty of questions. You may be thinking of starting a business and too afraid to take the risk. There’ll be plenty of advice and tips to be picked up throughout the day, so I have no doubt that you’ll leave the event feeling completely inspired.

Throughout the day, you can attend our networking breakfast, partake in a free speed networking session, listen to the keynote speakers and seminars and even attend our VIP after party held later today, also held at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff. Make sure you take plenty of notes and take them back into your business. I say this every year, but on behalf of Introbiz, I’d really like to say a big thank you to you all for attending the event today and for your support. Whether you’re an exhibitor, visitor, sponsor or even a speaker, make the most out of this opportunity and go make those connections!

Emma Davies, Editor and Content Manager

Thank you all – have a truly tremendous day and don’t forget to tweet us that you’re here using #IntrobizExpo.

tip You’ll get out of your business what you put in – be prepared to work hard

ABOUT THE EXPO 2017 Did you know that today marks the sixth Introbiz Expo? It’s unbelievable to look back over the years and see how much Introbiz has grown and developed.

Although the Expo is held for only a day, there’s months and months of planning that goes on behind the scenes. After last year’s event, we were already thinking about the next one, and here we are! We’re thrilled to be back at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff for the second consecutive year and we have a tremendous day planned. As you walk around the Arena, you’ll see over 200 exhibitors from a range of industries and sectors showcasing their products and services. They’re also on hand to offer advice and guidance when it comes to their specialities, so make sure you ask them plenty of questions. Throughout the day, you’ll see 10 keynote speakers take to the main stage to share their knowledge and it’s a perfect opportunity to get your questions answered by the professionals. There’ll also be a designated seminar zone where you can listen to a variety of presentations covering topics such as marketing, analytics, branding and networking.

8

The day will kick off bright and early with a networking breakfast, which is sponsored by PIXAFUSION Digital, held in the food zone. Enjoy a delicious breakfast before heading off to listen to the first speaker of the day in the main stage area. There’ll be a free speed networking session to partake in and following the close of the Expo, there’ll be a VIP after party where guests can get their glad rags on to enjoy a luxurious evening. A delicious 3-course dinner will be served and there’ll be plenty of entertainment throughout the evening. The after after party will be held at The Dead Canary. If you’re visiting the Introbiz Expo today, make sure you let us know that you’re here by using #IntrobizExpo and we’ll retweet you!

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS ALANA SPENCER APPRENTICE WINNER AND FOUNDER OF ‘RIDICULOUSLY RICH BY ALANA’ TIME: 2:20pm

Alana Spencer’s professional love affair with sweet treats began at the age of 14, when her Mum bought her a book about making chocolate. Alana became a self-taught chocolatier at only 16, renting her first kitchen and starting to sell her luxury chocolates to friends, family and teachers before quickly attracting the interest of two shops in Aberystwyth. The delicious chocolates became incredibly popular, and in 2010 Alana decided to leave school and pursue her entrepreneurial chocolate-loving dream. Initially calling her business Narna’s (after the nickname used by her little sister!), she started making tray-baked cakes alongside her chocolates and moved production to a purposebuilt country kitchen in her parents’ back garden.

In 2016, Alana decided to take her business a step further and she applied to become a candidate on BBC One’s The Apprentice, seeking a £250,000 investment from Lord Sugar. Proving herself to be business-minded, adaptable and astute, Alana beat 17 other candidates to win a 50/50 partnership with the business heavyweight, coming up with the new brand name for her business during the dramatic season finale…and so ‘Ridiculously Rich by Alana’ was born!

Staying true to her love for Belgian chocolate and luxury ingredients, Alana’s cakes impressed many independent delicatessens and she started selling her products in outlets across the United Kingdom. She refined her offering to six well-loved cakes (including her famous gooey chocolate brownie) and began travelling the country bringing her ridiculously tasty goodies to a large number of food festivals and shows.

SPEED NETWORKING Speed networking is an amazing way to meet countless businesses in a very short space of time. You may be wondering what the benefits of speed networking are. Trust me when I say, there are plenty! Whilst speed networking may not work for everyone, for most, it can be highly valuable and productive for your business. There’s no better opportunity to meet as many other business representatives so make sure you get your elevator pitch right! If you’ve got a new member of staff, take them along to the session. It’s a great way for them to put their

knowledge to the test and to perfect their elevator pitches. The final and most important aspect of speed networking is how efficient it can be. Everyone leads busy lives so making dozens of contacts in a short period of time really is priceless. The Expo’s speed networking session begins at 1:00pm so don’t miss it and make sure you take plenty of business cards with you!

ABOUT As well as hosting the Expo today, Introbiz is widely considered to be Wales’ leading independent business network.

Since being founded in 2009 by Tracey Smolinski, the company has seen some tremendous events, developments and achievements. At the start of the year, we were honoured to win the Mentee of the Year Award for 2017, a ceremony hosted by Business Wales. We hosted a launch event in partnership with Hugo Boss, a luxury event with tailor, Crow and Jester as well as a dinner for the Lord Mayor of Cardiff. The year has seen a great number of new members join the network, plenty of fun and exciting events and lots of new business made and exchanged. You can see some of our members exhibiting at the Expo today but generally, the network consists of hundreds of members, from a range of industries and sectors. From marketing agencies to website developers,

Tracey and Paul Smolinski

to luxury retailers and business advisers, there’s always someone new to meet. We host networking events every week so that our members can keep in touch with each other. These range from ladies’ lunches, which are held monthly and include a delicious 2-course lunch, networking breakfasts, also held on a monthly basis and are a great way to network before the business day begins, socials which are relaxed and informal, and power groups, formal and have a definite structure to them. We also host Business Clubs where a keynote speaker is invited to talk about certain business-related topics. These are very popular events and are usually held at Hensol Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan. Our members also enjoy a range of added benefits. News articles that are

published on the Introbiz website and promoted across our various social media platforms, discounts on some other members’ products and services, as well as a sound referral scheme. We also give advice and are more than happy to help when it comes to getting the most out of your membership package.

MEET US AT

Our sole aim is to connect you with your target audience and to make sure you get the connections you need. We’re completely dedicated and passionate when it comes to helping our members, so why not come and see what we can do for you?

ABOUT OUR EVENTS At Introbiz, we offer a range of events to suit everyone – breakfasts, socials, power groups, ladies’ lunches, business clubs and much more. There’s always something new and exciting going on, so make sure you visit our networking diary regularly to keep updated.

POWER GROUPS The power group events are among the most popular that we offer. Usually held on a Thursday afternoon from 4-6pm, these events are much more formal, allowing guests to network and connect with their target audience. The first hour is for informal networking where members and visitors can enjoy a selection of refreshments and chat to other attendees. Paul and Tracey will then give a welcome speech and if there’s a sponsor for a particular event, they’ll give a brief presentation. The second hour will take on a more formal turn as attendees take their place at a designated power group table. Every guest is placed strategically, depending on their target audience. During the session, everyone will have 5 minutes to talk about their business and what they do, and at the end of the event, there’ll be an opportunity to hand out business cards.

SOCIAL EVENTS Socials are held in various venues throughout Cardiff and usually include a delicious buffet. The socials are more relaxed than the power groups – they consist of two hours of informal networking. There’s no formal structure to adhere to and allows attendees to connect and mingle with whoever is in the room. This year, we’ve enjoyed some great social events, at Hugo Boss, the Lexus showroom and a delicious BBQ at Giovanni’s and we’ve got plenty more lined up for 2018!

60

BUSINESS CLUBS Our Business Clubs this year have been highly successful. Held at Hensol Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan, these events welcome a high profile speaker to share their wealth of knowledge and advice. We’ve welcomed Cardiff Devils’ General Manager, Todd Kelman, WRU Chairman, Gareth Davies as well as an afternoon with BBC’s The Apprentice winner, Mark Wright. The afternoons are highly useful if you’re looking to learn more about a particular business aspect.

LADIES LUNCHES Ladies lunches are also a great addition to the networking events we offer. On one Friday a month, the ladies of the network are invited to join us for a delicious 2-course lunch, a glass of bubbly along with some socialising. These lunches attract business owners, SMEs and corporate companies from a range of industries and sectors, so there’s always someone new to meet. These lunches are relaxed and easy-going, but guests are placed strategically. According to our ladies, these events are a great way to end the working week and ensures that everyone has the best start to the weekend.

BREAKFAST EVENTS The networking breakfasts are a great way to begin the business day. Usually held on a Friday morning, these events allow attendees to get their networking done before the official business day begins. The events are hosted in a power group format and includes a delicious cooked or continental breakfast. Very relaxed but effective, breakfast is definitely a great way to network with a new audience.

NETWORKING TESTIMONIALS

Being a part of such a positive network must surely have far reaching results for us all. Cardiff Metropolitan University

Going to Introbiz has allowed us to not only network and continuously meet new businesses but to build genuine, strong and hopefully longlasting relationships. The team are great at introducing businesses to each other to create potential leads and to provide extra support. As a new sport agency, we aim to support businesses looking to partner with a sports community while, advertising in an infectious and engaging way. Introbiz has allowed us to not only get to know the businesses but more importantly, the people that operate within them and, we look forward to working with them in the future! Ben Hofmeister Archer Sport Management

With an abundance of networking events from various organisations available in the area, it’s hard to find the right one. You can get lost and sit in a quandary. I spent some time, sorry wasted time, going from group to group until I found Introbiz. The contacts I have made have been invaluable, enabling us to make new connections and being exposed to opportunities. In the first quarter of 2017, we have recorded approx £15k of invoiced sales and generated a sales pipeline of over £60k, all generated through Introbiz and the members. The Introbiz network and Expo has started to form a vital part of our continuous marketing/sales strategy. We are proud to partner with Introbiz and the Expo. Lee Brockway Uprise Print

Introbiz is a very positive network to be a part of and I’d highly recommend all businesses get involved in this fast growing and brilliant organisation. LG Williams and Prichard

I joined Introbiz back in February 2017 and right from the start, the whole team at Introbiz have been amazing for both myself and my business. As a disabled man, it means a lot that Introbiz always check with the venues that they have disabled access to make sure I can attend. Both Tracey and Paul are always on hand to help in any way they can. They are always on the end of the phone and are always willing to point you in the right direction. Joining Introbiz was a massive gamble for me as a small business owner and it honestly has been the best decision I have ever made with my business not just for the sales but also for the connections I have made, as I would never have been able to get direct contact with the big companies without Introbiz. Would I recommend Introbiz? Definitely, without a doubt as it suits every business big or small. You never know who you may meet that will take a massive interest in your business and could potentially be that connection that you have always needed. Thanks Introbiz, you are all simply amazing. Marcus Gough Jones Eventagious Creo have been proud members of the Introbiz network for a number of years now, and our staff regularly attend the networking events. Paul, Tracey and the team are brilliant at bringing businesses together and producing yielding connections. Our experience of the events has always been a great blend of professionalism and enjoyment. Creo

NETWORKING TIPS FOR OUR MEMBERS As a business network, our priority is ensuring that you all get the most out of the service we offer. As well as our events, training sessions and marketing material, we offer plenty of networking tips and advice on how to make the most out of all these things.

BE YOURSELF The aim of any networking event is to build new relationships so if you start by not being yourself, you’re essentially lying to your new connection – which is not the best start! Be genuine. You’ll need these new relationships to build and grow so make sure you’re being yourself - people will only avoid you if you’re not. SET REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS Seeing a return when it comes to networking can sometimes take time. You may find yourself a few weeks or even months into your membership before you secure your first sale. This is completely normal. There’s a firm belief that people buy from people they know, like and trust, so if you make a successful connection, they will remember you. Don’t forget that your product or service may not be needed there and then, but in the future, it may very well be! Be realistic and take your time. TAKE NOTES There’s a few things you should always bring to a networking event – a pen, business cards, money and a notepad. Why? You’ll never remember all the connections you’ve made and whilst you can write some small notes on each business card, it’s just not realistic when it comes to writing when to get in touch and where etc. Plus, a notepad always looks that bit more professional!

68

ASK PLENTY OF QUESTIONS During an event, you should ask plenty of questions. What’s your name? What do you do? Have you been networking before? Is there anything I can help with? These are all suitable questions to ask, so ask them. Over time, you’ll build a much more personal relationship with the regular members and this means that conversation and questions will flow so much easier. You may ask more personal questions, such as how their family is or how a certain project is going. CONSIDER THEIR NETWORK This is one of the most important things you should remember when it comes to networking. You may make a connection with a business that has nothing at all to do with what you do. This happens, and is completely fine. Never, ever write them off. You will never know who your connection knows which makes it all the more important to be genuine, helpful and friendly. Ask yourself, would you recommend or refer business on to someone who was unfriendly or rude? No, you probably wouldn’t. BE ENGAGED Being engaging is the ultimate way to show that you’re interested in your connection. Nodding your head, maintaining eye contact and displaying positive body language all show you’re totally committed and engrossed in what’s being said. Don’t bury your head in your phone or listen to other people’s conversations – keep your focus and again, ask plenty of questions to encourage a smoother conversation.

MASTER NETWORKING 10 Steps to Building Business Relationships for Profit and Success If you’re looking to delve into the world of networking, or simply looking to polish up on some aspects of networking, then look no further than Master Networking. Written by Introbiz’s founder, Tracey Smolinski, she has more than enough knowledge and plenty of advice when it comes to networking. Having been there and done it, Tracey can advise how to network the right way and how to avoid becoming the shark in the room, targeting all the new, fresh meat! In the book, you can learn how to make the most out of your network, how to follow up with your connections effectively and even advice on how to perfect your elevator pitch – something imperative to get right at any networking event. Tracey also discusses her own personal experiences, of how she got networking very wrong in the beginning and how she had to take some harsh criticism to get networking right. She also advises that getting a return on networking can take time and plenty of effort but it’s all about getting stuck in and helping anyone who needs it! Your kindness will not be forgotten! Discussing the aims of the book, Tracey said; “The feedback I’ve received following the launch of Master Networking has been phenomenal. I’m extremely pleased with the book and I hope that by discussing my experiences, it inspires others to get out there and get connecting!” Tracey’s passionate about helping and empowering others which is why she decided to write the book.

You can purchase the book by either visiting the Introbiz stand (351) today at the Expo, or alternatively, the book can be bought on the Introbiz website www.introbiz.co.uk.

MANAGE YOUR MARKETING on

t e g d u ab

It’s fair to say that not all businesses have a huge marketing budget where they can buy TV or radio advertisements, take regular print advertisement spaces in international magazines and newspapers, or even billboards and bus advertisements.

Marketing doesn’t have to be expensive – and yes, methods such as email and social media marketing is a cheap way to do this, but there are so many other ways to get your brand out there. And whatever you do, don’t be tempted to cut your marketing budget if money is a bit tight. You NEED to have a marketing strategy! ELEVATOR PITCH Did you know that the average attention span of an adult is around six to eight seconds? Meaning you don’t have a great deal of time to keep the focus of your prospect. Your elevator pitch must be compelling, brief and to the point. If not, you’ll lose the interest of the prospect quickly and it’ll be a waste of time. It’ll take time and practice to perfect your pitch but once that milestone is reached, you’ll be well away (and memorable). LEVERAGE YOUR COMMUNITY Your community is a marketing method that should not be overlooked. Ask yourself when was the last time you spent the time visiting your local shop or library. Printing leaflets and business cards is one of the cheapest forms of marketing and these can more often than not be left for potential customers’ perusal. You could even go one step further and sponsor a local event, like a fayre or festival. These methods don’t cost the earth and is a sure-fire way of ensuring the community starts to notice you.

NETWORKING We couldn’t write this without including the importance of networking for your business. Getting to know people is the best way to spread the word about what you do and the services you offer. Yes, networking does require commitment, because you need to keep in touch with your connections and yes, networking doesn’t always provide an immediate return on investment, but stick with it. A strong network is not something to be overlooked. GIVE IT AWAY Today, people are more comfortable purchasing something they’ve already tried. If you can afford to offer a free trial or tester of your product or service, then do it. A customer is more likely to buy if they know that the product has worked for them, meaning they’re likely to buy, and buy again. Remember, it’s not always about the money you spend on marketing, but the effort, time and most importantly, finding the best and relevant marketing method for both you and your customers.

71

SOCIAL MEDIA FOR BUSINESS As you may know, at Introbiz, we love social media. The various platforms are used on a daily basis and is an integral part of the business’ growth. Social media takes time and patience to perfect, but done properly and effectively, you’ll reap the rewards later. Here’s a rundown of some of the platforms we use and how they can benefit you.

LINKEDIN If you’re new to social media, Linkedin is a service that you need to be using. This is a business orientated social networking service and with more than 443 million accounts, there’s no shortage of connections to make. This platform is available to both employers and employees who are looking to make connections with a wide range of local and international businesses. Creating a profile is free of charge but there is an option to pay for a platinum subscription where you can connect with even more businesses. FACEBOOK You’ve probably heard of Facebook and you may even have a personal profile on the site, but have you ever thought of creating a separate business page on the network? Yes, a business page is completely separate to your personal profile which is a great way to convey a professional image. Launched in 2004, this is the most used social network in the world, meaning it’s even more important to share images, videos, messages and content to your audience. This is a free platform, however you can pay a small fee to advertise your products and services. TWITTER Twitter is a great way to raise your business’ profile quickly. At Introbiz, we use Twitter daily and is commended for increasing our popularity. The platform enables users to send and read short, 140-character messages called tweets. You can “retweet” and “like” any tweets that are relevant to you or your business,

72

ensuring that you get even more exposure. And with more than 310 million monthly users, there’s never been a better time to get your Twitter account up and running. Creating a profile is completely free of charge. YOUTUBE Audiences are becoming more and more focussed on the use of images and video when using social media. From a business perspective, it’s a way of allowing existing and potential customers in to your business. Your videos should be related to the topic of your industry and should be full of useful information. Make sure they’re short, around a minute and a half should be fine. If you do have more to share, you can upload a video twice a week to keep your viewers entertained. You can film a video by simply using your smartphone, the quality should be good, but don’t worry if it’s not top notch – it brings authenticity to your business. INSTAGRAM Instagram is a highly engaged global community and with more than 500 million accounts, it may be worth you investing your time in creating an account. It’s completely free to set up an account and doesn’t take long at all. Your Instagram should tell a story – as well as including images of your products and services, why not take some pictures of office life or appointments with clients? This way, your business shows plenty of personality and insight into what you do.

Someone who is also willing to learn along the way and offer up new ideas is also key, some of our longest serving employees started with us straight from university on the Go Wales / Jobs Growth Wales scheme and are now senior members of the team.

How did Creo come about? Myself and my business partner Andrew Ashton initially built a website called Net Cardiff way back in 1999, it was an online portal to find venues, restaurants, what’s on listings etc. Back then only a few venues had their own websites so we offered them the chance to have a page on Net Cardiff. Venues eventually asked if we could build them a simple website and so Creo was born.

How do you retain your employees? Keeping good employees is key to any business, besides being competitive on salary we also provide a great working environment, profit sharing, flexitime, gym membership, and unlimited tea and coffee. It’s important to ensure that employees feel valued and part of its growth plan. Recently we have put in place a senior management team to drive the company forward.

As you were establishing and growing, what were the biggest challenges you had to face? Managing resources and workflow, in the early days we were winning projects and having the resources to carry out the work was always a challenge, so we started out with an in-house developer and outsourced design. As we became more established it became more important to bring these services in-house. More recently the challenge is competition. The digital sector has grown immensely over the past few years and so has the number of competitors we face when pitching for new work so we have to constantly stay ahead of the game and constantly review our business model and USP.

What has been your greatest success? There have been many successes throughout the years such as getting through the first year of business, or being asked to tender from companies who turned us down just a few years before, and still being here 18 years on! These are all successes in their own way. However if I was to pick one it would be being in a position to purchase our own office in 2012, we moved from a single room in a shared building to a beautifully converted church. This decision gave us a dramatic lift in terms of brand profile and instilled confidence in both our staff and clients. Sometimes I look around the office and realise how far we have come from a single computer in a spare bedroom.

What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur? The ability to keep calm under pressure, lead your team but be prepared to learn from them also, and don’t dwell on failure – learn from it and move on. What is your favourite part of being an entrepreneur? Being in charge of my own destiny, seeing a goal and working towards it. Also working with our amazing clients to identify solutions that make a difference to their business. Do you find it difficult to balance your home and work life? Not at all, family mean a lot to me and from the very beginning I made sure that I was always there to do the school run and keep weekends free for family time. You can lose money and make it back, but you’ll never get time back!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Spending time with family and friends, I love to travel and want to see more of the world. I enjoy keeping fit and go to the gym regularly.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time? Hopefully retired and on a beach! We now have a senior management team in place which will hopefully mean I can try and slow down a bit. Do you have any advice for anyone looking to start a business? Keep things simple and grow the business organically. We had a 3 year business plan at the start which gave us projections for the future, however each year we try and achieve a specific goal within the business that is manageable. Get a trusted mentor that you can call on or confide in to give you advice, it can be a business owner or just a member of your family but having a good soundboard is vital. RESOLVING HR ISSUES You may well be an expert in your field, but are you an expert in managing your employees? Many ‘people issues’ are faced by businesses, and, let’s face it, not everyone finds it easy to deal with these problems. So how do you get the best out of your people? How do you resolve the thorny issues of sickness, repeated absence, problems recruiting the right people and holding on to the best employees so they don’t leave and join your competition? Why don’t your employees care about the business as much as you do? The world of human resources can seem like a minefield when you are trying to keep your business running, your customers and suppliers happy and your board satisfied with progress. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a magic bullet that would help you get on top of those nagging people issues?

Well there is an answer. You can make steps to improve all those people issues and the magic bullet is employee engagement. It’s a phrase banded around in business circles but there are not that many people who really get it. Those that do, such as Sir Richard Branson at Virgin, focus on putting their people first. Companies with high levels of employee engagement report higher profits and sales, reduced absence, improved employee retention, they attract the best people to work with them and excellent levels of customer satisfaction. So there are specific things you can do to build employee engagement in your business and start to resolve those HR issues you are struggling with. Speak to a HR engagement specialist today, and start to transform your world of work for your employees. James Dalton

PROTECTING YOUR DATA Did you know that data protection laws are changing? Yes, as of May 2018, the Data Protection Act will be replaced by the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This means much tougher punishments for those who don’t comply with these new data regulations. The Data Protection Act dates from the 1990s, at a time when only the largest companies had the means to collect and store large amounts of data. Of course, times have changed. Today, it’s fairly easy to collate personal data and store it. This data is then used in everything, including sales and marketing. This is somewhat dangerous. Cybercriminals have spotted that SMEs don’t have the time or money to invest in sound security to protect their data making them a much softer target, whereas the larger companies do. The biggest challenge SMEs will face due to the GDPR is consent. Under new regulations, companies must keep a thorough record of how the data was obtained and whether the individual has given their consent to store and use their personal data. If not, companies are required to delete the data immediately and completely.

The aim of this to allow citizens to fully understand and control exactly how their personal data is handled and what it is used for. You may be wondering what qualifies as personal data. Well, it could be anything from your name, age and address to social interests and economic. For SMEs, personal data is a key tool for targeting and retaining customers. But with more employees now working remotely and out of the office, the rules are extremely blurred when it comes to accessing personal data. According to research, 1 in 12 employees are able to access information they shouldn’t be able to view, putting both customers and the company at a higher risk of data leaks. This GDPR law will ensure that businesses are more educated when it comes to finding the right balance between modern ways of working and storing data securely. Preparing for this huge change, regardless of your business or industry, you’ll require a full audit and for many businesses, a complete overhaul in culture. This is why you should start planning and implementing these regulations well in advance of the 2018 deadline.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BUSINESS REFERRALS There’s no denying that referrals are a great source of new business. How many times have you decided to purchase a specific product or service because a friend or family member recommended it? The same probably can’t be said for the number of you who readily ask for referrals.

Asking for referrals is one of the most effective and efficient ways to develop your business. Referrals build trust which should mean more opportunities for you to sell. Did you know that around 92% of consumers trust a referral from the people that they know? But how do you ask for referrals? GIVE A REASON Firstly, you need to give your customers a reason to refer you. You’re not likely to be referred if you deliver a less than average service are you? You should make them feel valued, give them your best, and consistently deliver exceptional customer service. You should find that over time, your customers will talk about you to the general public and sing your praises. RESOLVE CUSTOMER ISSUES QUICKLY Somewhere along the line, an error will inevitably be made. However, it’s how you handle the error that’ll make all the difference. Of course, consistent communication is key – keep your customers updated and send regular progress notices whilst you work tirelessly behind the scenes to fix the problem. This won’t go unnoticed with your customers and they’ll be even more keen to sing your praises to potential referrals.

86

USE SOCIAL MEDIA Social media can be incredibly powerful for referrals. Search any utility company on Twitter or Facebook, and you’ll see comments from customers passing on their feedback. Of course, some of these comments are not the most glowing, but if you deliver a quality service, your comments should be mainly positive. USE YOUR MANNERS It may be an obvious point, but a thank you really does go a long way. Always express your sincere gratitude when a customer refers you – they didn’t have to, after all! You could offer a discount or offer on a product or service if you feel like you can, but honestly, a simple thank you is all you really need. Asking for referrals is a great way to grow your business – don’t be afraid, just go for it!

MANAGING YOUR CASHFLOW EFFECTIVELY Cashflow is an issue that can really make or break your business. Yes, it’s great to be passionate about your business and what you do but let’s be realistic. You need a continuous flow of cash to maintain and potentially grow your business.

Ask yourself, at the end of every month, do you struggle to cover your overheads, staff salaries, supplier invoices or office rent? If the answer is yes, then read on. INVOICING Invoicing is only the beginning. Your cashflow is only as good as your accounting and reporting so make sure you have an accountant in place that can balance your books. It’s ideal to be able to see at a glance the financial state of your business. Make sure you send your invoices in a timely manner (this also shows that you are efficient and organised which can never be a bad thing in business!) You can also send payment reminders before invoices are due to keep them top of mind. Late invoice payments could really damage your business so you need to set a precedent from the very beginning. Make sure you have a sound debt collection strategy and you should be able to grow from there. FORECASTING Forecasting is where you can estimate all the cashflows and outflows of the business. This is another area where your accountant should be able to help you. If your business is particularly quiet in the summer or around Christmas, you’ll be able to see this in the forecast and make the provisions needed e.g. save extra money throughout the year to cover your quieter periods.

88

SURVIVING SHORTFALLS Sooner or later, you’ll find yourself in a position where you can’t pay your bills. So, where do you go? Whilst the most obvious place to turn is the bank, there are some other ways to manage the shortfall. You need to be able to prioritise your payments – of course, you need to pay your staff because without them, quite simply your business won’t be able to run. You should take a look at your bills and prioritise what needs to be paid first (this doesn’t necessarily mean just paying the smaller bills). You should also pay crucial suppliers because without them, there’d be no products and services. It’s also important to remember that doing these things should help the shortfall and things will eventually improve. Review your options to raise the cash you need – can you elevate your prices slightly? Could your payment system be more efficient? Try to agree improved credit terms with your suppliers Always make sure and these things should there’s plenty of cash help your business in the bank survive the shortfall.

S E L SA G N v I K R O W T E N There are some of you out there who may think that attending a networking event means giving it the hard sell. This couldn’t be further from the reality.

Yes, it’s true that networking is a form of selling your products and services but it’s so much more than that. Networking is a form of marketing – educating your audience about what you do, explaining how the product will benefit them and generally, spreading the word about your business. The salesperson will convince and close the deal (probably after the networking event). When it comes to networking, it’s all about building relationships and trust over a period of time. At Introbiz, our members enjoy an annual membership where they can attend our weekly events. Over a couple of events, it’s likely that some of our members will become friends, thus meaning they are far more likely to pass business your way. Networking should be an ongoing communications message – done well and you’ll convince people that what you offer really is the best on the market. Networking is an ongoing communications message that should educate and empower and there should be a focus on building relationships over time in order to show the value of your product or service. If you network well, it convinces people that your brand is the best for them.

Trust is created over time. Your clients will become your advocates, repeat customers and often tell their friends about your business Networking for many businesses is an ideal means of meeting the requirements of marketing and sales targets. Where a personal service is on offer, what better way is there to answer any questions or to offer reassurance, than at a networking event.

A careful combination of sales and networking is vital for success so hopefully, these tips could really benefit you and your business.

Selling is the act of persuading a consumer to buy a product or service. It becomes a motivational and passionate transaction between them once the need has been established at a price that the client is happy to pay, and the seller is happy to sell at. A good seller should spend time learning how prospects want to buy – by networking. Networking as a means of direct sales is generally a longer process. Unless you happen to meet the exact needs of a buyer the first time you meet them, it’s more likely that they will store your details for a time when they may need to buy from you.
