This special ‘Marina & Waterfront’ edition of the magazine is filled from cover to cover with the most fabulous properties in spectacular island, coastal, river or canal-side locations. I live right beside the sea myself and spend every possible moment sailing, yet I still feel drawn to take holidays either on or close to the water. Several of my summer breaks have been spent on board a yacht, first exploring Holland’s seemingly endless waterways before heading on to Germany and Denmark in following years. Memorable moments include cruising past Schiphol Airport and admiring stately Dutch windmills before mooring up alongside picturesque restaurants for dinner. Once into Denmark, via the famous Kiel Canal, it was fabulous to visit the beautiful city of Copenhagen before exploring the delights of the Danish fjords. Needless to say, this prompted me to include Holland and Denmark in our search for prime waterfront properties. Other destinations to come under scrutiny this issue are the USA, New Zealand, Australia, Dubai and London. While the extensive coastlines of the first three are natural choices for waterside living, don’t forget Dubai’s wonderful man-made islands, Greenwich with its maritime history and St Katharine’s Docks by Tower Bridge in the heart of London.

South City Square is a collaborative project by visionary developers Pellicano and Perri Projects. Located in Woolloongabba, the most dynamic inner urban destination in Brisbane, Australia, it offers much more than a place in which to live. The mixed-use precinct provides a unique opportunity to live with the convenience of shops, cafes, green space and transport right outside the door. The precinct’s initial stages comprise three towers with around 400 apartments which have now sold and are under construction. These represent half of the precinct’s residential offering. Ultimately, South City Square will deliver six distinguished residential towers and a boutique hotel as well as a major retail, dining and entertaining precinct including a full-line Woolworth’s supermarket and 500-seat cinema operated by NASDAQ listed, Reading Cinemas. Inspiration has been sought from the best urban renewal projects around the world, as well as from the history and identity of Woolloongabba itself.

london This new regular feature views the capital’s prime properties as if from the comfort of an aircraft’s first or business class cabin high in the sky. First on our radar are the fabulous areas of St Katharine Docks and the Royal Borough of Greenwich
t Katharine Docks is London’s only active marina, dating back to the 10th century. Once a centre of maritime trade, this exclusive dock continues to be a hive of activity with prime office space rubbing shoulders with high-end housing, bars and restaurants. Lee O’Neil, head of sales, Knight Frank Wapping comments, “St Katharine Docks is waterfront living, working and relaxing at its best. It’s located a short distance from the City square mile and offers the City workforce a tranquil space, moments from the office. “Over the years we’ve seen a wide demographic of people interested in living in the dock. Initially the target market was very much UK domestic buyers and high profile city workers seeking a water front piedà-terre. Many people who moored in the marina would use turn-key development flats as a local base which provided easy access to their vessels. More recently we’ve seen an increase in overseas buyers who have fallen in love with the waterside location and vistas. Properties available in St Katharine Docks vary from the bespoke character laden warehouse, Ivory House to the popular City Quay development and beautiful waterfront houses on Tower Walk.” Nigel Day of Riverhomes believes that St Katharine Docks is arguably the most exclusive marina in the world. “Its proximity to the City, not to mention landmarks such as Tower Bridge and The Tower of London make it highly sought after,” he explains. “Its desirability has increased even further in recent years thanks to improving »

A truly spectacular 1930s steel barge which has been converted into a magnificent contemporary houseboat with its own private access ramp. The near 50-foot foredeck provides enormous scope for al fresco entertaining but it is the internal volume of this vessel – in excess of 5,000 square feet – that has allowed for an extensive and impressive openplan upper deck. This includes a vast and bright reception, kitchen and dining areas, offering wonderful dock views with a central atrium stairway to a lower deck. On the lower deck there is a further reception area and access to a rib/jet-ski platform and five large double bedrooms, each with direct or shared en suite facilities. There is also a newly built office space at the rear of the houseboat with Tower Bridge views. £3.7m / €4.3m / $4.52m Riverhomes www.ipmag.link/2ooFhaV

The penthouse spans nearly 2,500 square feet and a number of listed features have been exposed including the original red brick walls, steel frames and 1860’s stone flooring. infrastructure and services. Whereas there was once a small supermarket, a coffee shop and little else, the area is now host to a wide array of shops and exclusive boutiques. “The redevelopment of the former News International headquarters will completely transform the area. Rather than ‘Fortress Wapping’, we will see a vibrant development that will change the character of St Katharine’s Dock for the better. There are lots of pieds-à-terre in the St Katharine’s Dock area whereas the London Dock development will bring in lots more permanent residents.” The Royal Borough of Greenwich is also a highly desirable area in which to live. Divyesh Bhanderi, lettings manager of Foxtons’ Greenwich office says, “It boasts impressive historic sites and the Royal Museums, vast green spaces of Greenwich Park, developed riverside and good connectivity served by both the Jubilee Line and the DLR, as well as the Thames Clipper. “With a range of good local schools, the area appeals to families, while the proximity to Canary Wharf via the DLR and to central London via the Jubilee Line is attracting professionals. Greenwich has a neighbourly, tight-community feel to it despite being a popular tourist spot. The O2, yet another London landmark in the area, attracts visitors from all parts of London and the UK, hosting performances of many celebrities and some fantastic exhibitions. “There is a mix of high-end properties in Greenwich, comprising large family houses, unusual conversions and high-specification modern apartments, but it remains a niche market in the area at present.”

the Aquis Depth Gauge. It was widely regarded as one of the most innovative diving watches ever made when it was launched in 2013. Oris equipped the Aquis Depth Gauge with an inlet in the crystal at 12 o’clock, leading to a channel milled into the outside edge of the crystal covering the dial. As the diver descends, air inside the channel compresses, allowing water through the inlet and into the channel. This creates a watermark that corresponds to yellow depth gauge indications marked on the dial, giving the diver a clear reading. cotch whisky is an iconic Scottish product which has become known across the globe. The earliest historical reference to distilling in Scotland appears on the Scottish Exchequer Rolls for 1494, where there is an entry of ‘eight bolls of malt to Friar John Cor wherewith to make acquavitae’. The earliest reference to a distillery in the Acts of the Scottish Parliament appears to be in 1690, when mention is made of the famous Ferintosh distillery » owned by Duncan Forbes of Culloden.

“Scotland has around 120 operational Scotch whisky distilleries and sells three times its nearest rival – American whiskey”
In the right spirit The highest price paid at auction for a bottle of Scotch is around £280,000.
Rosemary Gallagher, the Scotch Whisky Association’s head of communications, says, “Today Scotland has around 120 operational Scotch whisky distilleries and sells three times its nearest rival – American whiskey. In recent years, demand for Scotch has been largely steady with exports of around £4 billion annually. Last year saw increased demand following a couple of years of slight decline. Scotch exports were up 4% in value to just over £4 billion from slightly under £3.9bn in 2015, and up 4.8% by volume to 1.2bn bottles from 1.1bn bottles in 2015.” Blended Scotch whisky continues to be the biggest category but it is also good news that single malt Scotch whisky exports have exceeded £1 billion for the first time. “We expect demand to continue to increase,” says Ms Gallagher, “and this confidence is reflected in unprecedented investment in the industry, with more than a dozen new Scotch whisky distilleries opening in the last few years and up to 40 further projects at various stages of planning and development.”
If positioned end to end, the 99 million cases of Scotch whisky exported each year would cover the distance between Edinburgh and New York six times over.
Ms Gallagher reports that the USA is the biggest market by value for Scotch whisky, followed by France. However, Scotch is popular in many mature and emerging markets across Europe, Asia, North and South America. “We are very optimistic about the future of Scotch whisky as demand continues to increase and new markets open up,” she explains. “While a traditional product, Scotch is still innovative and new ranges are constantly being launched. There is unprecedented investment in the industry, for example in new distilleries, to meet demand and that brings fresh approaches to the industry. We expect Scotch to remain the world’s most popular whisky.” www.ipmag.link/2oXQP8b
Drinkers in the UK often choose to enjoy Scotch with just a little water but in Spain they mix it with cola, in China with cold green tea, and in Brazil with coconut water.

Lure of the Irish
Whiskey has been distilled in Ireland since the sixth century. It is one of the oldest spirit drinks in Europe and at its peak in the late 19th century there were 88 licensed distilleries, producing more than 144 million bottles annually. That meant that it was the largest global spirits category of the time. Miriam Mooney, head of the Irish Whiskey Association, explains, “Irish whiskey is protected under both national and EU law, so consumers are guaranteed a high quality premium product produced in Ireland. Irish distilleries work hard to protect the craft and ensure that only the best premium products are supplied to consumers around the world. “Irish whiskey has carved out its own niche in the global spirits market, relying on the traditional craft of Irish distilling and authentic heritage. The category has focused on building brands with global consumer appeal offering an alternative to Scotch and Bourbon whiskies.” Demand for Irish whiskey is booming. Global sales have increased by over 300% in the last 10 years making it the fastest growing premium spirit in the world. Exports are expected to

double to 144 million bottles a year by 2020 and double again to 288 million bottles by 2030. That is equivalent to over 550 bottles of Irish whiskey being exported every minute. In order to meet this demand, over €1 billion is going to be invested in distillery projects between 2010 and 2025. The increase in demand and investment is also reflected in the increase of the number of distilleries in production. In 2013 there were only four in operation producing and selling Irish whiskey, now there are 16 in production with another 14 with planning permission. “Irish whiskey is enjoyed by consumers in 135 countries around the globe,” says Ms Mooney. “The biggest consumer of Irish whiskey is the United States with nearly half of all bottles making their way across the Atlantic. Closer to home Germany, France and the UK import millions of
bottled Irish whiskey every year and there is also demand in Russia and the Baltic countries. “It has developed such a following that Ireland is attracting growing numbers of whiskey tourists who come to visit distilleries and sample the product where it is made. Over 650,000 tourists visit Irish distilleries every year and this number is expected to reach 1.9 million visitors by 2025. In terms of popularity, the only way is up. “The Irish whiskey industry is the fastest growing premium spirits category in the world. Over the coming years, as production of Irish whiskey increases with the additional capacity from new distilleries, sales will also increase opening up the possibility of pursuing new and emerging markets. Also with the growth in Irish whiskey tourism, its global appeal is expected to increase further.” » www.ipmag.link/2nEvKQ4

The Kavalan Distillery in Taiwan has been dedicated to the art of single malt whisky aged in American oak barrels since 2006. Kavalan takes its name from the original name for Yilan County and is backed by 30 years of beveragemaking thanks to its parent company, King Car Group. The world’s first subtropical whisky distiller, it is a pioneer in making whisky in a hot climate, and has collected more than 190 gold awards. Kavalan’s master blender, Ian Chang, plays an important role in the distillery, tasting and maintaining the quality and consistency of its whiskies every day. “One of our challenges has been to change the methods of whisky production to suit a hot climate,” he explains. “The weather is hot and humid, speeding up our maturation process, which is why we call it ‘maturation redefined’. “A lot of hard work goes behind the accolades we’ve received, which have made people within the industry and consumers seriously take notice of us these past few years. This certainly boosts company morale, as we all work hard to deliver the best whisky we can. The overall effect has been to encourage us to try even harder to bring our fans world-class whisky. In addition, thanks to worldwide support, Kavalan has now expanded and exports to 60 overseas markets.” The ‘Kavalan Single Malt Classic’ is the company’s best selling whisky. “This was the first whisky launched on our domestic and overseas markets. To us, it also represents the spirit and flavours of Taiwan. Kavalan whisky is rich in subtropical fruitiness and a floral fragrance that is mainly a product of its maturation in a subtropical climate as well as the type of yeasts used in our fermentation process. “In addition, we use natural spring water from Snowy Mountain which flows underground and is naturally filtered through tightly packed layers of the earth in the mountains, which makes the water smooth with a natural sweetness to it. This is one of the reasons why consumers experience natural sweetness on the palate. Moreover, the water has a nearly neutral pH with the right hardness, creating optimal conditions for the yeasts to ferment. This is how Kavalan achieves its complexity and creaminess.”

Adding a water feature to your garden or home creates a stunning visual centrepiece which is both calming and therapeutic
Magnolia Rebecca Newnham see page 52
here are so many different types and sizes of fountain and other water features that it can be difficult to know which one will suit your purpose and backdrop best. With this in mind we sought the advice of garden designer Rachel Bebb, founder of The Garden Gallery in Broughton, Stockbridge who holds regular sculpture exhibitions. She represents about 50 contemporary artists (including Neil Wilkin and Rebecca Newnham who both feature here) creating garden sculptures and other works of art. “Water adds a new dimension to a garden,” Rachel explains. “It plays with the light, cools and refreshes on hot days, and offers sanctuary to wildlife. Some sculptures, for example those made of glass, lend themselves to
being placed in water. The medium of glass harmonises effortlessly with water, reflecting the light and nearby plants and trees, and adding sparkle on sunny, frosty mornings. Whether kiln-formed, blown or bonded, glass withstands harsh weather conditions and is easy to care for. They work particularly well in modern, contemporary-style settings.” Rachel advises that fountains can be sited in pools or be self-contained if space is tight or there are small children to consider. “Freestanding fountain sculptures can create the sound of running water in tiny gardens, courtyards, conservatories or a 'room' in a large garden,” she says. “Stone sculptures in water demand simple but strong planting schemes to set off the hues of the stone, whether white marble from Italy or a soft English sandstone. “When choosing a water sculpture or fountain, consider the scale in relation to the setting, the aspect – is there plenty of sunlight to play on glass, for example? Bear in mind that the sound of running water can be intrusive so make sure the pump has an adjustable flow. Select plants to complement the piece, which in turn should enhance the planting scheme. Remember that the patina on bronze will change over time. Above all, buy because you have fallen in love with » your water sculpture of choice!”
The history of this fabulous water feature dates back to 1937
when René Lalique designed a fountain for the entrance to the Pavillon of Ceramic and Glass at the Exposition International des Arts et Techniques. It showed a fish leaping from a pool of pearls. In 1991, this magnificent creation was presented to the public by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris at an exhibition paying homage to the genius of René Lalique. Now Lalique offers this classic and iconic, clear crystal Poisson fountain (which can be viewed on display at the art deco entrance of the Savoy hotel in London and at the original Lalique Museum in Alsace amongst other places). Monet arking its 20th anniversary, the Fondation Beyerler in Basel has understandably opted for a show featuring the great Impressionist Claude Monet – a guaranteed crowd pleaser. Among the 64 works are rarely seen treasures from private collections. The works span most of this ‘pictorial magician’s’ career. They take us on his journeys through Mediterranean landscapes, wild Atlantic coastlines, along the Seine and Thames rivers and into meadows and, of course, the famous water gardens of Giverny. It is in these paintings of water lilies, of which the Beyerler has several great examples, that Monet's use of reflection and repeated motifs – that of the lily pads – reaches its zenith. The Fondation Beyerler, designed by Renzo Piano and set in the heart of parkland is a delightful venue. he idea of being able to swim and enjoy various spa treatments whenever the mood takes you is most appealing. For those with the space and the funds to make the dream become a reality, there has never been such a fabulous range of pool and spa designs on offer. Andrew Searchfield, CEO of high-end developer and custom builder Searchfield Homes, advises, “If delivered well, indoor pools can add a real wow factor to any home. For one client, we were recently asked to look at installing a submerging swimming pool. Fitted with a false floor that rises up from the bottom of the pool at the press of a button, owners of a pool like this can switch from having a pool room to a ballroom - making maximum use of the space. “If you are having considerable work done on your home or, in the case of many of our clients, you are knocking down an existing property and rebuilding
from scratch, this is the time to plan for an indoor pool. It can be incorporated into the wider design and will be much more cost effective. If you are planning for an indoor pool, then it’s also worth considering additional, complementary spa facilities such as steam rooms/saunas/hot tubs, to really maximise your use of the pool and the surrounding pool area.” Searchfield Home

There are many key considerations when designing home spa facilities as Nick Sadler knows from first hand experience. As managing director of motive8, a company providing bespoke design, supply and consultancy of gym and spa facilities, he says the ideal solution on meeting a client is to have a blank canvas. “If it’s a private dwelling then you need to find out what the key drivers behind wanting a home spa or gym are and who is going to use it. Is it a husband and wife? Do they have children? If so, how old are they? Who is going to use the space will ultimately define what the space becomes. “Our challenge as designers is to understand or extract from the client the ideas that they have in their head, what their vision is. Our job is to then take that vision, translate it, add to it and produce a solution that fits that brief and exceeds client expectations.” Mr Sadler advises that there is always a need to consider the worst case scenario. “For example, he explains, “if you are looking to install any kind of water feature and have small children, their safety is paramount so we may look to install a hard pool cover instead of a generic one. If the client is having a sauna, we will make sure the correct shut off is installed or timed door locks are used to avoid children from entering unsupervised by accident. As a designer, you always have to have health and safety at the forefront of your mind when making any decision on behalf of your client, particularly in a home gym scenario where they will
potentially be using the facilities on their own/unsupervised.” There are a few key trends emerging, such as infrared saunas. “Compared to traditional Finnish saunas, they heat up really quickly making them ideal for a home environment,” says Mr Sadler. “They also have great respiratory benefits and help with post-workout recovery/de-stressing. Ice fountains, snow rooms and salt rooms are also becoming increasingly popular in order to achieve an all-encompassing wellbeing experience at home. “Swimming has become a really popular form of exercise again and there are numerous options available. If you don’t have the space for a full length 20-25 metre pool to get your lengths in, then you can consider products like a swimming treadmill » or an endless pool.”
Vitality pools are hugely popular now for both fitness and relaxation and are definitely in the ascendant over jacuzzis

Martin Goddard is director and co-founder of Goddard Littlefair, a Londonbased interior design and architecture studio. The company is currently undertaking a landmark project for the private residential development, Southbank Place by the River Thames in London. “We are creating two spas at different scales,” explains Mr Goddard, “one for the luxury Belvedere Gardens building and one to serve the overall development. The smaller one is all about what potential owners you don’t yet know might want from such a facility, based on knowledge of previous projects, the location and the marketplace. The main spa will cater for residents of 400 apartments in total and so will have many more varied purposes included within it, from spa treatments to pool and fitness outcomes, as well as beauty requirements, with each as a separately planned ‘journey’ that doesn’t cross over. Each area will also have its own design criteria and feel too.” Mr Goddard says that vitality pools are hugely popular now for both fitness and relaxation and are definitely in the ascendant over jacuzzis. “Hammams are also very in demand,” he says, “especially with a contemporary look and, if you’re clever about it, they can be incorporated in surprisingly small spaces. Something people often forget too is somewhere to serve drinks properly with water access. Once you’re inside the spa environment, you don’t want to have to leave to get refreshments.” 64
The great outdoors If you'd prefer nothing above your head but the sky, an outdoor pool is the answer…
t may be that, after all things are considered, an outdoor swimming pool would better suit the layout of your property and its grounds rather than an indoor option. Bespoke Swimming Pools specialises in providing the highest quality pools for both indoor or outdoor installation. The owner of the family-run, UK business, Tony Keogh, oversees every project to maintain the high standard that its customers have come to expect, although his whole team is equally dedicated. “It’s a big decision deciding to have a pool,” says Bespoke Swimming Pools’ manager Kelly Keogh. “Whether you are thinking outdoor for endless summer champagne soirees by the pool to the envy of all your neighbours, or indoor to create the whole home spa experience with decadent lighting and perhaps a steam room. Whatever your vision may be for the ultimate luxury addition to your home the whole experience should be relaxed. A tennis match of ideas bouncing backwards and forwards based on experience and new ideas will ensure a bespoke pool project created just for you.” It’s vital that, in order to create a swimming pool that will last for many years, the whole project is planned and designed in great detail. Bespoke Swimming Pools offers advice on the optimum position of your swimming pool, the best design of pool and
optimum plan for the surrounding areas. Once all this has been established, the company then moves into the construction phase. It can also provide ongoing pool maintenance after completion if required. As for recent trends in pool design, Ms Keogh says, “We have seen clients opting for the darker pearlescent mosaic tile instead of the traditional Tobago aqua blue, which we think looks absolutely stunning. That said you cannot beat a fresh aqua pool when the sun is beaming down. Another recent popular feature is loungers being built into the pool either side of a set of roman end steps, could this be the end of the pink flamingo?”

“With the I-PACE Concept,” says Ian Callum, director of Design,
Jaguar, “we’ve torn up the rule book to create a vehicle with supercar inspired aesthetics, sports car performance and SUV space, in one electric package. It has surprised people and the enthusiasm for our first electric vehicle has been beyond all my expectations. For me, the future of motoring has arrived.” The I-PACE will be a long-distance sprinter that accelerates to 60 mph in around four seconds, with a range of more than 500km (NEDC cycle) from the 90kWh lithium-ion battery. Charging is easy and quick, with 80 per cent charge achieved in just 90 minutes using 50kW DC charging. Compact, lightweight electric motors at the front and rear axles generate a combined output of

New era for McLaren’s Super Series The McLaren 720S made its global debut in Geneva, introducing the second-generation of McLaren’s Super Series. It is lighter, faster and even more dynamically capable than its McLaren 650S predecessor, with unparalleled levels of interior space and sophistication and a breadth and depth of abilities to exhilarate the driver. A mere glance at the 720S identifies it as a bold reinterpretation of McLaren’s design language; rooted in aerodynamic principles, there is nothing superfluous about it. Immediately and undeniably a McLaren, the new 720S is arguably the most distinctive and remarkable McLaren yet. One of the key points in the design of the new Super Series is the absence of radiator intakes on the side of the car; this function is carried out instead by the unique ‘double-skin’ aerodynamic form of the dihedral doors. These channel air to the high-temperature radiators that cool the mid-mounted engine. Without doubt, the 720S has the widest breadth of dynamic capability of any McLaren, ranging from precise, controlled comfort to the most extreme handling prowess. Its new, twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine produces 720PS and 770Nm, achieving 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 212mph. From £208,600 www.ipmag.link/2nETAuT

Wrapped in the extravagant bodywork of an electric sports car, the Quant 48Volt, nanoFlowcell Holdings showcased the result of its state-of-the-art modern flow cell research in Geneva. The company has succeeded in developing the first ever controllable flow cell that enables a standalone design for low-voltage electric drives without the need for heavy and expensive supercapacitors. Questions on the power of the new 48Volt flow cell drive are quickly answered: The 560 kW (4 x 140 kW) electric motors in the Quant 48Volt accelerate the electric sports car from 0-62 mph in 2.4 seconds and onwards with no loss of acceleration to an electronically limited top speed of 180 mph. The anticipated range is also over 600 miles – 25 per cent more than that of the high-voltage version of the Quant FE sports car.

here’s no doubt that boarding a boat and setting off to explore distant shores always provides a great feeling of adventure. Whether you prefer sundrenched or ice-capped scenery, the choice of destinations, activities or pure relaxation is enormous. Seafarer is the UK office for 'mega yacht' cruise operator Variety Cruises, with a purpose built fleet of eight vessels with between 20 and 36 cabins. The company operates an extensive range of scheduled cruises in places like the Greek isles, Croatia and Montenegro, Spain and Portugal, Cuba, the Cape Verde Islands, Costa Ricas and Panama, Iceland and also year round in the Seychelles.
Variety Cruises’ fleet of mega yachts rarely holds more than 60 passengers. This ensures a relaxed, informal but sophisticated voyage for the discerning traveller who wants a boutique experience on chic vessels. What’s more, these vessels can get into the smaller, more picturesque and traditional islands and harbours that the big liners simply cannot reach. This is as close as it gets to a fully-catered cruise on a millionaire’s private yacht. Excellent service, great food, exciting itineraries with stops to swim off the ships’ aft swimming platforms in secluded coves with crystal clear waters. These cruises are designed for those looking for an informal yet exclusive cruise experience, and looking to ‘get under the skin’ of a destination, with much more time ashore. Launched in 2012, the 68 metre state-of-the-art ‘Variety Voyager’ is the largest mega yacht in the fleet, accommodating 72 passengers in 36 cabins. Featuring sleek lines and ample deck space, inside her cabins and public areas are finished with warm fabrics, rich marbles, Axminster carpeting and soft tones wood panelling. There are unobstructed views of the ocean and of the ports visited everywhere onboard, while the professional crew of 32 all have a true desire to ensure their guests have a wonderful time. It was in the mid-60’s when Lars-Eric Lindblad began taking travellers by ship to remote parts of the world. In 1969 he commissioned the first purpose-built expedition ship – the Lindblad Explorer. During the next decade he opened up opportunities to explore places like Antarctica, Galapagos, the Amazon, Seychelles and much of the Pacific. Lars’ son Sven-Olof, travelled extensively with his father before founding Special Expeditions as a division of Lindblad Travel. This enabled the company to further its mission of offering innovative and educational travel expeditions that were primarily marine focused. The company’s name was later changed to Lindblad Expeditions and, in 2004, it joined forces with National Geographic. Today with offices in New York City and Seattle, Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic operates its own fleet of 10 ships, six owned and four leased, offering adventures across all seven continents.
Sven and his team continue to pioneer innovative ways to connect with the places already ‘discovered’ – being the first to introduce kayaking to the Arctic, Antarctica, and Galápagos; the only one to offer kayaking on the Upper Amazon; the first to reveal the wonders below the ocean with an unmatched undersea programme; the first to offer an unparalleled photography initiative with a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor on each expedition. A fleet of five expedition ships carry the National Geographic name and often act as a platform for National Geographic experts including photographers, writers, field researchers and film crews to visit field sites with guests in tow. The fleet consists of nimble, intimatelyscaled expedition ships, able to safely venture where larger cruise ships cannot. This enables authentic, up-close experiences in the planet’s wild, remote places and capitals of culture. The ships are fully equipped to enable a genuine connection with the places visited and offer inviting private accommodations and gracious public spaces for minging with other like-minded explorers. Denmark & Holland
t’s interesting to note that Denmark and Holland both feature in the Top 10 listing of the World’s Happiness Report 2017. In fact, Denmark was only toppled from number one position by Norway this year. Produced by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the report was a global initiative launched by the United Nations in 2012. The rankings are based on six factors: per capita gross domestic product, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, social support and absence of corruption in government or business.

A region in the Kingdom of the Netherlands just to the west of Denmark, Holland is famous for its colourful bulb fields, cheeses and extensive waterways. Its capital, Amsterdam, has no less than a quarter of its surface area taken up by canals and harbours. The city’s 65 miles of canals provide a mode of transport as well as a source of recreation, with more than 15,000 pleasure boats registered in the city. These thriving waterways are also dotted with houseboats, canal-side terraces, cafes, bars and restaurants. Holland also boasts a long coastline with beautiful beaches while its flat landscape makes it an ideal place for cycling. There are no restrictions on foreigners buying a house in the Netherlands and this appears to be attracting overseas interest as Hans Veenhuijsen, CEO of Residence 365, an affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, explains. “Most of the buyers are Dutch however we have done some major transactions with Asian buyers. Other international buyers until now come from the USA, Turkey, Australia, UK and Switzerland. “Buyers traditionally purchase homes in or near the big cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Prices per square metre for high end apartments on prime locations in the Netherlands vary from €6,000 (Rotterdam and The Hague) to even €16,000 (Amsterdam). The average is €10,000 per square metre.” Mr Veenhuijsen expects prices to rise, depending on interest rates and other macro-economic factors. This is due to the fact that Dutch properties still are relatively affordable compared to other European countries, particularly cities such as London, Berlin and Paris. “We are experiencing a lot of confidence in the market again and buyers – both national and international – are buying homes for investment,” he says.

Denmark is a Scandinavian country on a peninsula that extends into the Baltic Sea and, like the Netherlands, is a constitutional monarchy. It has an exceptionally long coastline and literally hundreds of Danish islands just waiting to be explored. The capital city of Copenhagen features fascinating architecture, gourmet restaurants, the famous Tivoli Gardens and, of course, the Little Mermaid statue. According to the Global Property Guide, Denmark’s property market continues to show spectacular performance, with residential property prices surging, boosted by negative interest rates. It goes on to report that, because of strong house price rises, the International Monetary Fund has urged the Danish government to reverse its negative interest rates mandate and introduce new policies, such as zoning rules and relaxing rental market regulations, to avoid a housing bubble. There are certain requirements for non-Danish citizens when it comes to buying property. Unless you have lived in Denmark for a minimum of five years, you must obtain permission from the Danish Ministry of Justice. However, this restriction does not apply if you are an EU-citizen and if the property is to be used as a permanent residence.
Designed specifically for its location on the edge of the Sound, this villa and its plot gives fabulous views all the way to Kullen, Sofiero Castle in Sweden and Kronborg. The property offers 384m2 of large, bright, open living spaces, the mark of a renowned Danish architect, and was built in 2010. Its layout is designed in the form of one large room filled with natural light and tailored to the family's need for private rooms. Therefore, all the doors are sliding and fitted with special glass to create a unique transparency. Custom-made floor to ceiling glass panels and large skylights also help to blur the line between indoors and outdoors. The first floor offers access to the building's rooftop terrace with its outdoor fireplace and covered bench where both the view and the sunset can be enjoyed. There also is a built-in sound system from Linn, which can be adapted to the need for varying audio experiences in different rooms. £3m / €3.5m / $3.8m Lilienhoff www.ipmag.link/2oY18cC

large percentage of states (23 out of a total of 50) border the Atlantic Ocean or its Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific Ocean or the Arctic Sea. Alaska has the longest coastline at 6,640 miles bordering the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, followed by Florida with 1,350 miles alongside the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico and California with 840 miles of Pacific coast. With so many prime waterfront locations to choose from, we consulted two prominent international estate agents for advice prior to featuring a number of properties currently on the market. Jason Mansfield, US residential sales at Knight Frank, reports that the general sentiment in Miami is that the market has moved away from the state of euphoria that existed a couple years ago. “But, while there have been fewer transactions,” he says, “the median sales price has continued to rise. There are some great properties on the market at present and I expect to see several more significant luxury sales before the end of spring.” Penny Mosgrove, CEO at Quintessentially Estates, advises that Los Angeles is a popular destination for wealthy property investors and is deemed more affordable than the powerhouses of London and New York. “Recently we have
seen an influx of Chinese buyers at the top end of the market in LA looking to take advantage of the direct and more frequent flights now offered by Cathay Pacific,” she says. “There are also numerous American buyers, particularly from San Francisco, where a new high speed rail to LA is in planning stage which will inevitably mean an increase in buyers looking for holiday homes. LA continues to be desirable due to the sunny climate, the sea and the popular healthy and outdoor lifestyles enjoyed by residents and visitors.” »

ustralasia, a region of Oceania, comprises Australia, New Zealand, the island of New Guinea, and adjacent islands in the Pacific Ocean. New Zealand consists of two main islands, North Island and the larger South Island, together boasting over 9,400 miles Âť of fabulous coastline. 111
Suburbs with harbour views or proximity to beaches, such as Herne Bay, St Heliers, parts of Takapuna and Devonport, tend to be highly sought after New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, was recently placed third in Mercer’s 2017 Quality of Living rankings. Ideally located between two picturesque harbours, with easy access to New Zealand’s renowned natural beauty and with a business-friendly environment and infrastructure, it’s no great surprise. The average property price in the Auckland region for 2016 was NZ$975,691, with 94.5% of sales reported to the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) selling for under NZ$2 million. Quality properties start at about this level, depending on location, with some properties selling as for as high as in the NZ$20 million plus range according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand statistics. Barfoot & Thompson is Auckland’s leading real estate agency, family owned since being founded in 1923 and a member of Leading Real Estate Agencies of the World. Managing director, Peter Thompson, advises, “Suburbs with harbour views or proximity to beaches, such as Herne Bay, St Heliers, parts of Takapuna and Devonport, tend to be highly sought after and some of Auckland’s most luxurious homes are found in them. Older established suburbs with large homes on substantial plots are also popular with overseas buyers, as are some of the more modern lifestyle properties on acreage to the north and south of the city.” With just 29 properties (0.1%) reported to REINZ as selling in the NZ$7.5 million plus range in 2016, if you’re looking for property to suit your needs in the region, it may pay to have some eyes and ears on the ground. “We have over 1,800 agents in our Auckland and Northland network,” says Mr Thompson, “a number of whom speak a second language (English is the main language in New Zealand). They’re well placed to advise clients as suitable properties come to the market.”

Life ‘down under’
Turning our attention to Australia, Michael Pallier, managing director of Sydney Sotheby’s International Realty, reports that its coastal regions are the most popular areas. They also prove the most difficult areas in which to acquire property. “In the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney,” he says, “properties are surrounded by the world-famous Sydney Harbour, local beaches such as Bondi Beach, and also secluded harbour beaches which are very popular. Buyers look to buy in close proximity to these areas as it offers them the ultimate Sydney lifestyle. “The Eastern Suburbs of Sydney are considered to be an affluent area where the majority of high-end properties are located. Some of the key suburbs are Bellevue Hill, Rose Bay, Vaucluse, Double Bay and Point Piper. In addition, Wolseley Road in Point Piper is famous for being one of the most expensive streets in Australia. In these suburbs, it is not uncommon for prices beyond AUD$20m to be achieved.” It’s interesting to note that those purchasing high end properties in Sydney are roughly 25% Chinese buyers and 75% local residents and expats. As to the future, Mr Pallier concludes, “We predict that property prices in Sydney will continue to increase. This is due to Sydney’s predicted increase in population growth and low mortgage stress in these areas.”

Jacada Travel is a boutique travel operator that specalises in planning bespoke tours around the world in a responsible, sustainable way. While all of the company’s trips are tailor-made, this sample itinerary gives a pretty good idea of what can be arranged. Beginning in Auck land, this bespoke roughly two-week exploration of New Zealand takes you on an adventurous tour around the country. You’ll visit the stunning movie set where The Hobbit was filmed and then glide along an underground stream at Waitomo to witness the thousands of twinkling lights created by the glow worms that light up the cave. The next three days are spent exploring Rotorua’s landscape of bubbling mud pools, steaming craters and erupting geysers. You’ll also get the thrill of landing on New Zealand’s only active volcano with
a helicopter flight to White Island. The next leg of the journey takes you on to the Marlborough Sounds (via Wellington) to spend two days in the beautiful Bay of Many Coves, where you can swim, sail, kayak and hang out with penguins. The last stop on the adventure is Queenstown. There, you’ll take a scenic helicopter flight to Milford Sound and get your adrenaline pumping with a boat ride through narrow canyons, with 360 degree spins thrown in for good measure.

The Mystics of Papua New Guinea
Established in 1984, KE Adventure Travel invites intrepid travellers to participate in a 17-day exclusive adventure holiday. Papua New Guinea is part of the second largest island in the world, and is notorious for its remote location, penetrating rainforest and colourful, tribal people. The trip involves two weeks delving into this magical land, travelling in a motorised canoe up the Sepik River, hiking in the mountains and rainforest, and attending the vibrant Goroka Festival. You start with a night in Singapore before

flying to Port Moresby and on to Wewak on the northern coast. A four-day trip up the Middle and Upper Sepik River in dugout motorised canoes leads to isolated villages where much can be learned about local traditions and folklore. You then head on to Mt Hagen for a couple of days’ trekking through the rainforest with its array of diverse flora and fauna, including orchids and flamboyant birds of paradise. The walk leads to the base camp from where trekkers climb the highest peak, Mt Wilhelm (4,509m). The grand finale of this extraordinary holiday is the Goroka Festival. Here around 100 tribes show off their music, dancing, and elaborate face painting, head dresses and costumes. You need to be mentally and physically prepared for this holiday, however the most important things to bring are a spirt of adventure, a willingness participate, an open mind and a sense of humour.
This adventure from Jacada Travel enables travellers to explore Australia’s diverse and beautiful landscapes in search of its endemic animals, staying in a wonderful selection of the country’s finest wilderness lodges. You start out at the Bamurru Plains, a luxury bush camp surrounded by thousands of pristine wetlands and savannah. Then you’ll head inland via Sydney into the sublime Blue Mountains (where you can indulge in nature walks, mountain biking and game drives), followed by a trip out east to the remote Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea (think snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking). You’ll end your Australian tour on Kangarloo Island to explore more wildlife and adventuring before heading into Southeast Asia for a grand tour of the region. Expect stunning scenery, world-class accommodation and the chance to see some of Australia’s incredible wildlife. Desert ISLANDS Known as the Middle East’s Riviera, Dubai proves an excellent choice for sun-drenched homes with fabulous views of the Arabian Gulf
ubai is already worldfamous for its series of man-made islands such as Palm Jumeirah, Deira Island and Palm Jebel Ali, now a new waterway has turned a significant part of the emirate into an island. The 3.2 km long Dubai Water Canal winds its way to the Arabian Gulf from the Creek in Old Dubai through Business Bay. Along its waterfront are the W Hotel, the St Regis and a whole range of new lifestyle precincts. At a cost of AED 2.7 billion, the much-anticipated project involved an infrastructure overhaul of one of Dubai’s busiest areas. The canal
ranges from 80 to 120m in width and cuts through Dubai’s main artery, the Sheikh Zayed Road, across Safa Park and into the residential Jumeirah district, connecting with the Arabian Gulf. This adds 6.4km of waterfront to the emirate and creates 80,000m² for public space and facilities, plus a 3km running track and 12km cycling path. The new development is sure to boost both Dubai’s tourist and property market in the near future. Core Savills’ Dubai residential market update for the first quarter of 2017 reports that it has marginally edged upwards, although prime areas continue to lag in performance. While most market players are in consensus over the prices bottoming, a range of economic factors are resulting in contradictory indicators of recovery. However, there is no doubt that the off-plan market is witnessing robust performance.
