Welcome! Our features meetings always bring forth a whole host of ideas for interesting, topical articles covering the global property market and generally living a highly desirable lifestyle. One suggestion that really caught our attention this time was from the magazine’s publisher, Stuart Shield. Entitled ‘The Bank of London’, it imagines the capital as being exactly that and calculates what interest could have been earned by property investors over the course of several different time periods. Other features to highlight include a latest update on Spain where the Balearic Islands appear to be leading its comeback. We also select the very best properties currently on the market in Barbados, the Bahamas, Canada and across some of the most popular parts of the USA. Moving on to the travel section of the magazine, I always think that half the joy of a holiday is in the planning. This was certainly true with my trip to New Zealand earlier this year and I’m now making endless lists for a few eagerly anticipated days in Cannes. Sprint finish McLaren GT is to produce a new high performance variant of the C, named the C GT Sprint, designed to offer further enhanced handling through optimised aerodynamics and track focus. The track-only model signifies the continued development of the C model, and bridges the gap between the C, itself fully accomplished on both road and track, and the all-out racing C GT and C GT Can-Am Edition models. It has been designed and developed by McLaren GT, the race car building arm of the McLaren Group, and retains many of the unique systems from the C road car, on which it is based. Built around the lightweight carbon fibre MonoCell chassis, and with developments to systems such as ProActive Chassis Control, (PCC), Brake Steer and the McLaren Airbrake, the latest model from McLaren GT has been honed to deliver a more track-focused GT racing experience whilst retaining the balance and precise characteristics much praised in the road car. Generating PS, the optimised .-litre twin turbo engine includes a unique oil system,

and cooling system which features a C GT developed central front radiator. The GT Sprint retains the C’s seven-speed twin clutch gearbox. The PCC suspension system has been tuned and recalibrated to suit the car’s lower ride height and racing slick tyres, providing a firmer and more circuit-orientated setup. The C GT Sprint has three unique handling modes which allow the driver to select their preferred damping, roll stiffness and ESP settings. Externally, the C GT Sprint features optimised aerodynamic and cooling upgrades. At the front is a more aggressive front bumper, GTinspired bonnet with radiator exit ducts and front wing louvres. Lowered by  mm, the C GT Sprint is fitted with track-focused braking system with carbon ceramic (CCM) brake discs. Tyre changes are made easier through an on-board air jacking system and centrelocking -inch OZ wheels, shod with Pirelli racing slick tyres. Inside the cabin, the C GT Sprint is fitted with an FIA-approved rollcage and integrated fire extinguisher system. A fully adjustable

HANS-approved, lightweight composite racing seat fitted with full six-point harness provides the optimum driving position, while an airconditioning system is retained, albeit a lightweight version, offering added comfort. A carbon fibre dash houses the race developed digital display and key vehicle controls which interface with a McLaren GT developed steering wheel. Further enhancements are available through a range of bespoke options including a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) developed aerodynamic package including carbon fibre rear wing and front splitter, and further lightweight components including a polycarbonate windscreen. The C GT Sprint, finished in heritage McLaren Orange as standard, made its world premiere at the  Goodwood Festival of Speed. Record breaking Silverstone Classic The 2013 Silverstone Classic not only lived up to its billing as ‘the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival’ but surpassed all expectations establishing a host of new benchmarks and records. The huge three-day extravaganza boasted its biggest ever entry as well as unrivaled on-track parades, an incredible new lap record plus a mass of famous faces all relishing the breathtaking atmosphere in a record attendance of 90,000, up from 83,500 in 2012. Spanning nine decades of glorious motor sport history, this year’s incredible line-up of 24 races set a new world record. With 1,104 entries in 2011, the Silverstone Classic was already in the record books as the biggest race meeting ever staged anywhere on the globe. Now this year’s event has broken its own record with an unprecedented entry totaling

no fewer than 1,113 of the world’s finest and most authentic historic racing cars. It wasn’t only the amazing line-up of races that stole the headlines, though. Adding to the dazzling show, more than 8,000 classic cars adorned the busy Silverstone infield. Aston Martin marked its centenary as ‘featured marque’ on the Saturday while the UK’s largest gathering of Lamborghinis (numbering more than 80 magical models) celebrated the Italian supercar company’s 50th birthday. Sunday, however, was dedicated to Porsche. A special parade was organised to mark 50 years of the iconic 911. Thanks to Porsche Club GB and its enthusiastic members the original target of 911 cars was smashed with a world record 1,208 taking to the track. Adding to the sense of occasion, the

Light and smooth for manoeuvring, firmer and more agile for sporty driving and challenging roads, Direct Adaptive Steering makes all options available via simple touch-screen controls. Uniquely in the class, both steering weight and response can be tailored, with all settings stored for each driver in the Q50’s sophisticated memory. Like a jetliner, Direct Adaptive Steering benefits from several back-up systems – including a conventional mechanical steering linkage. It works by electronically transferring the driver’s input to the front wheels where a high-response actuator drives the steering rack. By eliminating the mechanical losses that can dull the responses in conventional systems, steering response is faster and vibration at the steering wheel is eliminated. All this is achieved with a level of feedback from the road that is central to every Infiniti’s performance feel. Steering is adjusted on a touch screen as part of the Infiniti Drive Mode Selector. Depending on the model, there are up to four pre-set modes plus a personal setting that allows the driver to mix and match effort and response to suit individual driving style and type of road. A further benefit of Direct Adaptive Steering is that it comes with Infiniti’s latest driving technology, Active Lane Control. This uses the steering system to keep the car between motorway lane markings, ‘magnetising’ the car to within its lane. A trip to the seaside was always something to look forward to, the excitement of the journey in anticipation of the wonders that awaited. Even in adulthood the child within all of us still stimulates the senses of life’s simple pleasures to be had upon arrival. The fresh air, the promenade, the pier, the funfair, the candy floss; even the shops filled with cheap toys and gifts in lurid colours enticing you to buy even though your head advises against it. The  Spider is the perfect car for days out whatever the weather. The metal folding roof deploys in just a few seconds and, with the British summer of  likely to go down in history as one of the finest, you can enjoy the best of open top motoring that money can buy. This is such an easy car to drive well and unlike many supercars, has a clever suspension system that irons out the roughest roads. Although the suspension designer may have been challenged to smooth out the ruts of the Nürburgring, it works equally well on ice damaged UK roads. The V engine produces  horsepower and if you accelerate hard, screams louder than people on the ghost train and gives you more thrills than the big dipper. The carbon ceramic brake system also stops the car quicker than a stubborn donkey. Without doubt the Ferrari is a fun place to be and considering

how many people had gone off to Clacton to seek their own entertainment, I realised I had already enjoyed bundles of it from the moment I climbed into the car. Upon arrival at the resort, I looked for a place to park and ended up right in front of the pier. The large number of people must have thought the latest attraction had arrived and lined up to admire the car and have their photo taken alongside it. I cannot think of another car that would have brought so much pleasure to so many than the  Spider did on that August day. In fact it took until pm for the crowds to die down enough to snap the car and pier together without the car being completely hidden from view. One ambitious girl out for the day from London said, “I am going to buy a Ferrari one day”. She told me how she was going to do it and listening to her explanation I believed she would. Stuart Shield reviews yet another action-packed season of classic motoring events from the heart of the Sussex downs Goodwood is now well established on the motorsport calendar for its two distinctly different events that take place every year. During July the Festival of Speed attracts a huge number of historic and modern racing cars as well as famous drivers from almost every era of the sport. There are quirky cars ranging from a replica of the first steam-powered vehicle to the sinister ’s Phantom Corsair, a one off showstopper designed by Rust Heinz of  Varieties’ fame. There are lots of elegant marquees and exhibition stands, good food and excellent hospitality. However, what the crowds come to see is the spectacle of speed. Cars old and new, track and road icons snake their way up the long estate road, past a dangerous flint faced wall. They emerge at the top unscathed (well most don’t crash) with their drivers eager to see if they have broken the records that are held for their type of vehicle.

Thrill of the hill

I am sure every spectator would love to sit in the cars that take part, an honour that fell to me this year courtesy of Ferrari who offered me

the passenger seat of one of their  Spiders. As a small number of cars make contact on the way up the hill, I was passenger to professional racing driver and driving instructor Ray Grimes. The moment came around pm on Saturday afternoon, almost an hour later than scheduled. Ray dropped the clutch and spun the rear wheels as he headed for the start saying he needed heat in the tyres, raising a cheer from the crowd leaning across the barrier. Each car went off with over  seconds’ space between them and then came our turn. More smoke, more noise then the first bend, made it, next bend much quicker then another then the flint wall which passed my shoulder at over

 miles an hour and inches to spare. Then came the trees – thankfully each side of us – then we emerged at the top with around  other supercars shimmering from the heat of the engines. What a ride! Another annual event that is too good to miss each September is the Goodwood Revival. It’s a great excuse to go out and buy or hire some outlandish fancy dress outfit and take the wife or girlfriend for a memorable day out. Better still, plan to stay at least two days to take it all in. When you have stopped looking at all the wonderful sights you can then enjoy the vintage racing – and it doesn’t get much better than this. Captiva Florida The island of Captiva, lying off Florida’s Gulf Coast, has been a hideaway for A-list celebrities for the last 100 years. Rachel Newcombe explores some of the country’s property hotspots Whether you’re thinking of buying a second home, rental property or investment pad for the future, there are lots of options to explore in Canada. Property purchasing is relatively straightforward for foreign investors, plus there’s the bonus appeal of a common culture and language. According to the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), the number of property sales in July  was up . per cent compared to the same period in  and the average nationwide sale price rose by . per cent. Unlike its near neighbour, the USA, Canada has avoided a major property downturn in recent years. In fact, house prices in the country have doubled in the last  years, says the Teranet-National Bank Composite House Price Index.

City meets coast

The coastal city of Vancouver, in British Columbia, southwest Canada is just one example of a

city boasting plenty of opportunities for discerning property investors, not least because of its enviable location. “This geographically stunning city, with its port and mountains in the background, is small, yet vibrant,” says real estate agent, Maggie Chandler. “There are lots of top restaurants in the city, excellent entertainment, such as opera, ballet and theatre events, plus it’s easy to get around on foot without a car. “The luxury real estate market in Vancouver is still desirable for buyers,  has seen  houses sell for over m each, compared to just  in . Property investors looking to make the most of up-and-coming areas of the city may be wise to keep an eye on properties in the region of the new Crosstown LRT, they suggest. “By the time it’s finished, it will have significant implications for the real estate market in Toronto.” Lots of areas have already benefited from being situated near major transport routes, and it’s one of those factors that savvy investors are often on the lookout for, so they believe the same could be true for properties located in the region of the new Crosstown LRT, such as Scarborough. ▶
