It was donated to the community as a way of giving something back that would promote the residents’ health and wellness and raise their standard of living. As real estate investors capitalise on every available area within the continuously growing and increasingly dense city of Jeddah, there are less and less parks and green spaces within the city for residents to enjoy. This park includes a variety of features encouraging community gathering as well as physical activity, particularly for children who are commonly confined to play indoors. With this in mind, a children’s play area has been integrated into the park’s design.

The project features a variety of seating areas built into the landscape using locally sourced wood for the benches. Respecting the challenging climate of Saudi Arabia, the project has both soft and hardscapes that will allow it to thrive in the relatively harsh environmental conditions and prove long-lasting. Indian Jasmine trees for example bloom twice a year, are suited to warm and humid conditions and have a long life span. Lifestyle Developers has installed an underground tank with a pressure-boosting system to irrigate Sultan Batterjee Park with water connected directly from the government of Jeddah. Solar garden lights prove an inexpensive way to illuminate the park and improve its appearance by both day and night. By sourcing energy from the sun they do not require any external source of power which would necessitate wires being dug underneath the ground.

 M T in Jeddah is a mixeduse commercial building by Lifestyle Developers. Located in a prime position on the intersection of two vibrant commercial streets, it is an 11-storey building comprising 88 offices, five retail shops, two cafes and open elevated terraces. At first glance, the development’s exterior gives the impression of stacked, rotating boxes. This design gives a lightweight and soft aesthetic to the tower, while a heavy, stone clad base anchors it to the ground. By implementing larger setbacks on the street fronts, Lifestyle Developers has created a more pedestrian friendly environment. At the same time, green

spaces and open plazas have been introduced in an effort to redefine and improve the urban nature of the street. A café on the ground floor offers both indoor and outdoor seating areas while an attractive landscape design surrounds the building. Shops provide ease of access to the building through the connecting terrace in the northern and eastern sides of the tower. A second floor terrace wraps the building and offers designated activity areas that can be used as additional cafes. Additionally, prayer rooms with designated ablution areas for males and females respectively have been provided on the fifth and sixth floors.

Dynamic lighting enhances Rosemont’s bold architecture, wrapping the glass towers and podium. Representing a shell and pearl, moving lights illuminate the core of Rosemont’s five-star, 448-key, 53-storey hotel tower in a pattern inspired by atomic, orbital rings. Standing adjacent, the 280-key, 55-storey fullyserviced apartment tower is conceptualised as a continuously flowing river. The following award-winning projects are prime examples. Waterbay is a prestigious residential project in Bahrain Bay that consists of three, 11-storey buildings. The client wanted the architectural design to reflect a vision of ‘paying homage to the sea’. Its overall design therefore resembles the character of a ship, evoking the long nautical history of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Covering 145,000m², Waterbay consists of both residential and retail units. Apartments have all been angled to offer the best sea view, while high-end retailers are accommodated

on the ground floor above a parking base. A swimming pool and gym enhance the residents’ lifestyle and further complement their luxurious surroundings. The concept of Layan, Bahrain’s first residential waterpark, is hugely inspired by the fluidity of the ocean waves. This corresponds beautifully with its location in Durrat Marina, a 600,000m² luxury seafront development. The client brief called for ‘surrealism and an out-ofthis-world’ design for the six-storey building, consisting of 228 residential apartments and 38 retail units. The resulting organic, curvilinearlongitudinal form matched the land and its surroundings perfectly. Additionally, providing an innovative twist to Layan’s futuristic design, eight water slides will connect the users of the building directly to the waterpark.

The company’s award-winning project 1/JBR Residential Tower is in a prime beachside location with stunning views to Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Eye. This aspect has driven the entire design with the overall massing, each floorplate and every unit type being designed to optimise these views. Following a seaside theme, the entry to the 46-storey tower features a structure symbolising a billowing cloth such as a sail, beach towel or swimsuit wrap. Inside are 154,

two to four-bedroom units, all with superb sea views and spacious terraces. Exclusivity in terms of vertical circulation was achieved by dedicated elevators for each stack of apartments. Lower units have a shared elevator lobby with only one neighbour while upper units have exclusive lobbies which become part of each apartment’s interior. High-end leisure amenities including a pool, gym and spa are contained in the building’s podium. Due to its simple, clean lines and refusal to pander to the building design fashion of its day, the project is timeless. As a result 1/JBR will continue to appear fresh and attractive for many decades.

It comprises an integrated railway network consisting of four Metro Lines with approximately 100 stations. A Long Distance Rail Network, connecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Qatar in the south and the Kingdom of Bahrain in the north will supplement the Metro System. A key concept within the design is one of creating varying scales of identity for the network, line and station to offer brand recognition for users. Network identity reflects the overall QRDP brand using recurring design elements that will shape the architecture of the stations consistently

and offer brand recognition with Doha’s urban fabric. Line identity is achieved by creating different atmospheres within the stations for the theme of each of the metro lines (Historic line, Coastal line, City line and Education line). Distinct wall and floor treatments and material applications orient and guide the travellers throughout their journey. Individual station identity is realised by displaying features positioned at strategic points in different areas of each station. The content of these features is specific to each station and related to the local context and/ or line theme. By integrating curated content throughout the stations, the Metro Network will serve as a cultural vehicle for Doha.

Its layout, style and décor have been carefully selected to remain true to the glorious safari setting. MA S  a multidisciplinary architecture, design and engineering firm based in Dubai with an extensive portfolio of award-winning projects. The Atrium House and Farm House are two stunning properties located in Sharjah, UAE overlooking the mountains. The former has taken the mountain views as a key feature throughout its concept while the latter features internal courtyards and a central pool which connects the whole house together. The Jumeirah Bay Island Beach House is designed for a large family on one of Dubai’s manmade islands. Divided into three sections with gaps between for more privacy, each section is oriented towards the sea to provide the best view for their main living areas.

The Al Barsha Residence, K.S.S in Dubai is a 42 to 44 unit mix of one and two-bedroom apartments with basement parking. This multi-faceted building resembles a carved rock and features a light-coloured façade to reduce heat absorption and rectilinear windows for increased ventilation and maximum views across the park. The Sharjah Showroom has been innovatively designed as a flexible commercial space that can easily adjust to suit the requirements of up to eight tenants. While showrooms generally feature expansive glass fronts, as this building is in the desert, windows have been topped by rough concrete look material with hollow blockwork to keep the building cool.

The boutique design studio led by Nikki Bisiker comprises a team of interior and architectural professionals with project management and logistical support all inhouse. This is combined with an extensive network of skilled artisans, worldwide suppliers, and committed contractors. The company specialises in high-end residences and boutique hotels. The company’s award-winning interior design project involved creating a highly individual 30,000sqft home in Nad Al Sheba for the client, his wife and five children. Each member of the family had varying tastes for design in their own rooms, from “I would like a rainbow of colours” to “calming and neutral”.

The concept of the project began with custom wallpapers, one for each room, with each wall depicting the theme of the area. Examples are the industrial street look for the teenage boy’s room to rococo architecture for the master bedroom, then shabby chic for one of the daughter’s rooms. Other wall finishes, lighting, materials, and custom rugs followed suit in the same theme for each area. Major features complementing the backgrounds were the 95 items of custom made joinery, bespoke furniture and upholstery items. Bold artworks using the Christian Lacroix range of fabrics continue the unique look. All design work, workshop drawings, oversight, manufacturing and installation were completed in-house and with NBSI Joinery partners. NBSI also redesigned and specified all hardscaping and softscaping in external areas.

Creating everything from bustling retail outlets to tranquil luxury spas, the company’s aim is to imagine the best customer experience possible and then bring it to life. The first of Dakota’s latest award-winning projects is a high quality men’s footwear store inspired by a unique blend of gentleman’s club chic and rugged industrial style. ‘Tread+Miller Shoes, Canal Walk Mall’ is one of 16 stores Dakota has successfully launched for the brand and it is currently working on three more. The unmistakably masculine design suits the target market of predominantly middle to higher income, urbanite South African males

perfectly. The calm sophistication of the space was achieved by adding multiple layers of detail to enhance the overall experience. ‘Casa Bella, Grand West Casino’ is an upmarket, Italian restaurant franchise concept. Taking its cue from the name, meaning ‘Beautiful Home’, Dakota sought to find the balance between stylish contemporary design and artisanal authenticity. Mandatories for the concept included the signature twin wood fired ovens, a viewing area where patrons could watch pasta being freshly made and an open ‘show’ kitchen where every single plate is finally assembled and brought out to the table. Dakota has since successfully designed and completed two further restaurants and is in the process of designing five more.

  , MZ Architects is an award-winning firm with offices in Lebanon, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The company was appointed to design K Galleria, an innovative lifestyle centre on a 2,700m² plot in Kaslik, Lebanon with no architectural concept constraints. The project called for a supermarket, retail zone, bookshop, coffee shops, an indoor and outdoor food court housing various restaurants, a children’s play area and extensive car parking facilities. As the project was very small compared to usual retail centres or department stores, MZ Architects’ main challenge was to design a building that was structurally sound and aesthetically appealing. Generous space had to be allocated to leisure and entertainment

aspects whilst also fulfilling the retailers’ needs and conforming to building code requirements. The vision for K Galleria was inspired by the infamous ancient khan or urban caravanserai, the equivalent of a public marketplace in the Middle East during the Ottoman era. The building presents itself as a solid monolithic cubic element evoking the typical square layout of the khans. This contemporary interpretation of the vernacular is complemented by the choice of natural local white stone as the main building material. K Galleria is set to become the most distinguished urban attraction centre in the area; a community environment where people can gather for social activities rather than just for shopping.

 H  an award-winning project by Edifice, a company specialising in residential, commercial, hospitality and mixed-use developments. It features designs by Singapore based firm WAVE design consultants which add to the international allure of the project. Edifice’s objective with Purple Haze was to set a new benchmark for residential living in Nairobi, one which fosters and creates a strong community in an affordable, sustainable and attractive development. A string of choreographed experiences leads from the entrance of the site down to the Kirichwa Kubwa River at the far end. What follows is a series of courtyards stepping down with the contours of the land. Crafted to express the five elements, each one is

rendered with art forms and kinetic sculptures encapsulating this theme. Besides the sensory experience and providing light and ventilation, these courtyards create smaller neighbourhood clusters of 50 houses each. They eventually link up with the central courtyard where the stage is set for larger interactions around the swimming pool. In line with the overall concept, the project explores natural materials and textures to create a feeling of intimacy and a setting that is harmonious with nature. Green rooftop terraces, accessible by all units, open out to the view and include barbecue pits, party terraces and quiet corners. With Purple Haze, Edifice and WAVE design consultants have succeeded in blurring the lines between nature and the home.

between the different disciplines, 3deluxe orchestrated a multi-sensory experience based on a walk-in, tactile sculpture. Here, where architecture, design, flora, sound and graphics overlap, a complexity of design emerges that fully involves viewers. With its golden sunshade roof, the centrally located Butterfly House is one of the main attractions on Al Noor Island. The impressive, organically shaped steel structure is covered in thousands of star-shaped metal blossoms, which paint ornamental patterns on the inside glass pavilion as the sunlight shines through them. In addition to a tropical rainforest habitat that is home to more than 500 exotic butterflies, the building accommodates a café with an atmospheric ambiance.

Over the years, it has built an enviable reputation in the East Africa region as an architectural practice that helps tackle complex challenges and develop creative, sustainable built forms. The company’s award-winning architectural project Pearl Marina is a mixed-use development in Entebbe, Uganda. The first marina in Sub-Saharan Africa, it also offers luxury residences, high-end hotel resorts, office parks, a retail centre and a wide range of sports and recreational activities. These are all supported by expertly planned, sustainable infrastructure. Situated on the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake, the 300-acre site was

formerly a golf club. It originally included two peninsulas with a total of three kilometers of lakefront. This was a major plus for the new development as it meant that 360 degree lake views could be incorporated in all its facilities. Due to the region’s high temperature, all walls have been painted white and light coloured roofing sheets have been used to increase the reflection of the sun’s rays. Large opening windows allow for cross ventilation and natural cooling while rolling screens on lower doors double up as shading screens and fire-fly prevention, particularly in the evenings. Each unit faces the lake but is carefully screened from neighbouring villas for maximum privacy.

This is achieved through innovative design, stakeholder engagement and future monitoring to sustain itself. The Sustainable City is the first operational Net Zero Energy city in Dubai, and is modelled to become an international showcase for sustainable living, work, education, and recreation. Located in Dubailand and spanning over 450,000m² (46 ha.), the City provides a complete suite of amenities and environmental features. The first phase is nearing completion and comprises five residential clusters, a buffer zone, a central green spine, an equestrian club, and a mixed-use development.

The City’s water strategy includes water saving devices, greywater recycling, and treated sewage effluent reuse in landscape irrigation. Waste management aims to achieve 100 per cent waste diversion from landfills. The City’s transportation strategy encourages residents to rely less on motorised transport and more on walking and bicycling. The clusters are car-free zones and therefore only accessible on foot or by electric buggies through narrow ‘sikkas’ that link the city together. W D G was approached by its client Obegi to transform a building that combines two existing villas into a single furniture showroom. The key requirements were to emphasise the high-end furniture brand through creating an attractive facade while also enhancing the visitors’ approach to the building. Elegant and timeless architecture was required to reflect the exquisite furniture the showroom would display. The resultant contemporary styling of the showroom exudes subtle sophistication. Its glass facade provides this modern development with a sense of place, as well as transforming itself at night with strategic lighting. The size of the glass panels is maximised to provide street frontage

and to have visual interaction with passersby. High performance glass has been specified to counteract hot summer temperatures whilst allowing as much natural daylight in the building. Glazing is recessed to reduce the direct sunlight from entering the building and to create shading, thus reducing air-conditioning loads. The ventilated facade allows warm air to rise and disperse at the top, creating an airflow that keeps the building cooler. The Obegi brand has been sucessfully integrated within the facade with the two existing structures being merged together seamlessly. Visual connection between inside and outside allows the retailer to showcase brands more effectively, like a gallery exhibiting its artwork.

ISSAMHAYEK    was commissioned to design a residence with multiple bedrooms and facilities for a client and his family. The client had purchased a prime piece of land on which to build Makhoul Residence in the Bekaa Valley in the beautiful city of Zahleh, Lebanon. Its sloping plot presented several challenges in terms of regulations, especially the height of the retaining walls on the boundaries. The architects also had to ensure that no major openings were incorporated in the north elevation as it is directly exposed to the neighbouring plot. Due to the angle of the land, the garden has been divided on two

levels. The first is an extension of the property’s entertainment floor located in one of three basements and hosts the outdoor dining area, barbecue, swimming pool and Jacuzzi. The second is an extension of the gym area. An atrium forms the main feature of the house, allowing controlled light to enter and leave its imprints on different levels of the interior space. It also serves to keep a transparency between the interior and exterior. The void is innovatively transcrossed with two bridges, one on the ground level relating to the reception area with the main dining room and another on the first floor relating to the master suite and the rest of the bedrooms.

The residence belongs to a Kuwaiti family with three children who lived for a long period in the USA in order to study and work. This made them favour living environments that are open to the world outside but which still retain more private family areas. The first sketches began with a visionary design taking into consideration the building code in Kuwait and a fixed budget. This

concept embraced all the required functions distributed between open and closed spaces through transparent and solid partitions creating volumes, frames and surfaces. The result was a dynamic design where volumes, frames and partitions floated and appeared inside it. This concept allows the family to enjoy different living areas both inside and outside through the villa’s wide transparent and solid partitions. The final composition of interlocking volumes provides the requested privacy, while at the same time offering optimum use of the exterior spaces. Shading from the roof cover also helps to create shadows on the gardens and balconies, protecting them from the summer heat.

 I  been the recipient of multiple awards during its fascinating evolution. It is now entering the final stages of development from what was a reclaimed coral flat in 2004 to a vibrant new mixed-use project, representing an icon for progressive and innovative development in Seychelles.     multidisciplinary design firm based in Saudi Arabia. The first of its two latest award-winning projects is Capital Market Authorities HQ. As the centerpiece and tallest building within the King Abdullah Financial District, the faceted crystalline structure rises 385 meters and reshapes the city’s skyline. An in-depth study of the region’s environmental challenges inspired the development of a highperformance enclosure system that incorporates solar shading, photovoltaic solar collection, and an innovative façade access system. Floors provide clear span lease depths that facilitate flexibility and access to natural daylight. Contributing to the building’s efficiency, a revolutionary vertical transportation system represents the world’s first large-scale use of

twin and double deck elevators. The tower’s unique design was the result of a successful joint venture between Omrania and HOK. Arriyadh Metro Western Station is much more than simply a place to board a train. Omrania’s goal was to design an intermodal transit hub that appeals to non-transit users. This new iconic nexus links buses and the city’s light rail system. The design concept of the station building is a modern interpretation of the ‘desert sand dunes’, where a cluster of dune shaped, earth coloured structures emerge from the site. This creates opportunities for station entries, light penetrations and pedestrian shading. Together, the station and its outdoor spaces will create a comprehensive urban statement, an exciting composition anchoring the station as a new landmark in the city.

Set on a relatively small plot, the geometric lines of this 21-apartment building soar 56.6m above the earth on a sloped parcel of land. The concept is a sculptural arrangement of stacked, displaced and rotated boxes, presenting an individual façade to each direction. A fixed core of lifts and staircases at the heart of the building means that there are no constraints on the layout of residences. Alternate floors are rotated 90

degrees, utilising crossing girders and a new generation of reinforced concrete for stability in this seismically active area. Apartments comprise fluid spaces, large balconies and wall-to-wall window frames, maximising the striking views. Each level consists of one or two apartments, with the single apartments experiencing full 360 degree panoramas through windows of up to 12m wide. On the ground floor the recessed space for the lobby is covered by a spectacular cantilevering volume, creating a nicely covered place and marking the generous entrance of the Cube. Three levels of underground parking is convenient and practical. The Cube is set to become an iconic residence in Beirut – an advancement in both style and construction techniques.
