Going the extra mile - why life on the buses is grand for Green Mountain… They started off with a single 14-seater Transit and a mission to make travel a pleasure not a chore. Now Green Mountain Travel is everyone’s favourite firm. BACK in 1993 Tracy Thorpe was happy in her job working in Fenwick’s salon in Newcastle – until a nightmare coach journey changed her life. “We’d gone on a ski trip and the journey was desperate,” Tracy says, still shuddering at the memory nearly 20 years later. “I thought to myself, ‘I can do better than this’ – and so when I got home I decided to do something about it.” So it was that Green Mountain Travel was born. And initially with only a 14-seater Transit to her name, Tracy set about creating one of the most respected travel companies in the country, one that has delighted customers returning time and again. Today the firm has eight drivers and boasts a fleet of 16-seater minibuses specifically suited to airport transfer, 24-seater

mini-coaches ideal for holiday transfer or skiing and golfing parties, and 51-seater coaches for those longer trips to the south of England, Scotland and Europe. The Mercedes luxury coach fleet features latest models with the highest design specifications in customer comfort. All Green Mountain’s minibuses and executive coaches have valeted luxury interiors and trims, are regularly serviced and valeted and the exteriors are always clean. Fleet: GMT have buses to suit all occasions

Today they not only provide transport and catering buses for major Hollywood productions such as Harry Potter, but their wide selection of vintage cars and bikes have featured in films, dramas and commercials including: Elizabeth I, Gabriel & I, Breeze Block, Byker Grove, BSkyB, MacDonalds, Ultralase, Coca Cola, Nescafe, Tesco and Catherine Cookson dramas - to name but a few!

all the mechanics and mum Pat regularly helping out her daughter in the office, there’s a real family flavour to the operation. “I like to think we’re small but beautiful,” she laughs. “Customer care is foremost, but we wouldn’t be in the job if we didn’t enjoy it ourselves. We could be much bigger, and have coaches going all over the continent – but why have all the hassle?” Testament to any company’s success is word- Sleek: Green Mountain Travel buses are perfect for of-mouth recommendation – and Green holiday transfers and wedding parties Mountain has it in spades. It’s clear that versatility is also key to Green Mountain’s reputation as a market leader. For instance the firm provides a, cost effective and stylish wedding transport service, allowing the bride and groom to enjoy their big day without worrying that their wedding party will be lost or late.

“I like to think we’re small …but beautiful.”

“Organised travel allows the guests to fully enjoy the day too; with no worries about traffic congestion, parking and not being able to have a drink or two!” says Tracy.

Stylish: all GMT’s Mercedes buses have valeted luxury interiors and trims

Over the years they have carved out a niche working in the film and television industry, starting in the early days ferrying the cast and

Sean’s Top Tips Every month Sean Brough from STB Joinery shares his top tips of the trade. This month: how to stay safe in the workshop. 1. Always Wear Safety Equipment Most important item of all are your safety glasses. Put them on before you start work and and don't take them off until you’re finished. 2. Wear Appropriate Clothing Remember to avoid loose-fitting clothing, as you wouldn't want it to get tangled in a saw blade or cutting head. Remove any dangling jewellery such as neck chains or bracelets. 3. Avoid Drugs and Alcohol Intoxicating substances and woodworking are a dangerous mix. Wait till you’ve finished the job to crack open a beer. 4. Disconnect Power Before Blade Changes Many a joiner has lost fingers (or worse) by forgetting this simple but very important rule.. 5. Try Using One Extension Cord This way, you’re forced to switch the cord from tool to tool before the tool can be used. In this manner, you are always remembering to plug and unplug the power when moving from one tool to another.

7

6. Use Sharp Blades & Bits A dull cutting tool is a dangerous tool. If a saw blade is not as sharp as it ideally should be, it’s more likely to kick-back or bind. Keep the blade sharp and clean, and you'll be safer and have better results. 7. Always Check for Nails, Screws and Other Metal Nails and rapidly spinning saw blades are not a good mix. Not only can they damage the cutting head and the stock, but at the very minimum, can cause the stock to kick back, which is a common cause of injury. 8. Always Work Against the Cutter Woodworking Power Tools are designed so that the direction that the wood moves through the tool is in the opposite direction of the movement of the cutting head. In other words, a router bit or saw blade should cut against the motion and not with it. The cutter should cut into the stock, not with the stock. 9. Never Reach Over a Blade to Remove CutOffs Never put your hands anywhere near a moving blade, especially when attempting to remove waste or cut-offs. Wait until the blade has stopped moving and THEN reach for the cut-off. 10. Avoid Distractions Remember to always finish the cut to a safe conclusion before dealing with a distraction. Taking your attention away from the woodworking tool is a recipe for disaster.

Mum’s the word! Former teacher Sue took the plunge... Now her party bag business is booming “I drew on my experience of children’s parties to help me write my business plan and then later to shape and also run my business.”

Ashington mum Sue Dodds-Crouth is the living embodiment of the old adage “seize the day”. Last year Sue was offered voluntary redundancy from her job as an IT teacher – and she didn’t need any second bidding to take it. After 11 years’ hard grind and with three young children of her own to think about she was ready for a complete change of career. From an office in the spare room Sue created Roloca’s Realm, a small-scale operation supplying party bags for kids’ birthday parties. Six months later, business is booming to the extent that she now counts wedding and exhibition organisers among her clients and is looking to expand into an industrial unit.

Roloca’s Realm offer a wide selection of party bags, including multicoloured plastic loot bags, brightly coloured block bottom paper bags, luxury twisted handle paper bags, white twisted handle paper bags, brightly coloured soft cotton bags, leopard/zebra print paper bags, multicoloured candy stripe paper bags, and also block colour paper satchel bags. Sue says: “We like to challenge the idea that party bags are only for birthday parties. There are so many different occasions where a party bag of some kind could be given out. We’re now specialising in an ever-growing range of unisex/boy/girl/themed goodies to go inside the bags – and lots of sweetie treats! “Our aim is to provide a wide range of different party bags to meet the needs of different occasions which is why we have party bags such as our ‘lucky dip’ style treat bags, reward bags and our very popular event bags, alongside the more traditional types of party bags.”

One thing is for certain: Sue has no regrets about her life-changing decision. With orders “I’d originally thought about opening a soft pouring in, she’s barely had time. play area, but the costs were far too high,” she says. “Having spent a considerable amount of time over the past six years attending children’s parties I realised there was a market for more parent-friendly, baby-friendly and childrenfriendly party bags.

If it’s a Sophie Simpson Garden, with all the attention to detail you’d expect from one of the county’s leading landscape designers

NORTHUMBERLAND is renowned for its rugged, untamed countryside. And for Tynedale-based landscape designer Sophie Simpson, creating a new garden is as much about working with natural rural surroundings as imposing her own designs upon them.

It’s this deftness of touch, combined with a sympathetic ear for a client’s requirements, that has earned Sophie Simpson Garden Design a growing reputation from the Scottish borders to North Yorkshire.

RP 23 “From the initial vision and overall design of your outdoor spaces to advising on and planning your planting, arranging for structural features such as walls, ponds, paving and seating areas to be constructed and giving instruction and guidance to all aspects of garden maintenance, I will create the right package to suit your needs,” Sophie says.

“Although I describe myself as a designer, I don’t impose my taste on a project.”

Sophie has been in business for 10 years. Before that she studied at the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens under the auspices of the highly-regarded Pickard School of Garden Design.

She now offers a comprehensive range of garden services that extend beyond design and include guidance on maintenance, sowing, Based at Bradley Hall, in Wylam, Sophie has growing, cutting and developing wildlife areas. been responsible for creating dozens of country, contemporary and large suburban gar- Sophie says: “As part of the planning process a dens, transforming the ordinary into the planting plan is also drawn up, tailored to the extraordinary and adding swathes of colour client’s tastes, the type and aspect of garden, and beauty that can be appreciated by every- and to fit in with the client’s level of gardening one who sees them. expertise.” “Although I describe myself as a designer, I don’t impose my taste on a project,” she says. “I use a certain style, but I always listen to the client.”

Bella pasta: the sumptuous tagliatelle amatriciana is one of the highlights on the menu at Fratelli

‘Scusi, while I treat myself to a taste of la dolce vita! YOU DON’T HAVE TO VISIT ITALY TO SAMPLE AUTHENTIC ITALIAN FOOD, AS KIT NEWTON DISCOVERED WHEN HE DINED AT FRATELLI IN PONTELAND Upon arriving at this Italian sensation, we were immediately impressed. This exquisite culinary delight introduced us to two true Italian headliner’s, that did not disappoint.

Arriving at the restaurant at 1pm on a busy Monday afternoon, we were warmly greeted by the manager who showed us to out dining table, just off the main restaurant showcase area. It was intimate, cosy, yet very stylish with superb attention to the table decoration. The mood was informal, relaxed yet had an air of anticipation as the gathering of lunchtime diners was plentiful. It was clear to see the level of attention of detail was prolific, as the warm mix of customer service and prompt table attention was excellent. Out attention was now clearly focused on our starters as were treated to two fabulous dishes. I opted for the fegato di pollo (chicken liver pate with red onion marmalade) while my wife opted for cocktail di gamberetti (Greenland prawns with homemade marie rose sauce)

RP 29 As a lover of spice, I enjoyed this dish as its combination of delicate pasta fused with pancetta, onions, chilli, garlic & tomato gave this dish the credit it really deserves. The ÂŁ8.75 price tag was also very tasty! My wife plumped for Pizza Kiev, beautiful mix of tomato, mozzarella, chicken, mushroom and garlic. The taste was delicious. The base was light, the chicken tender, whilst the mozzarella, mushroom and garlic were done to a turn.

Mouthwatering: cocktail di gamberetti They were both beautifully presented, with huge emphasis on taste. My pate was delicious with subtle hints of the chicken liver, presented on a authentic bread board. The prawns were fresh, juicy and plentiful, but not heavy or overbearing. The mains were also equally sensational. I really wanted to try authentic Italian pasta at its best, so opting for the tagliatelle amatriciana was the first option.

But then Fratelli is a must for any food love. The staff and open kitchen give this restaurant a real Italian feel, with emphasis on quality food, amazing service and super cool Italian interior style and dĂŠcor.

A send-off with a difference... How one Whalton T company is adding a whole new dimension to the funeral trade

even choose their coffin at the company’s local warehouse to be delivered to the door or your chosen funeral director.

But if the inevitable tax bill will never be much fun to contemplate, at least you can now ensure you go out in style thanks to a Northumbrian firm offering an innovative approach to the funeral business.

“More importantly we give people the chance to stop and think about their loved one, rather than feeling they ‘have to get the funeral over with’.

A spokesman said: “When someone dies their relatives will invariably go to a funeral director and pay more than they should for coffin prodThey say that nothing is certain in this world ucts. But few people know that it’s possible to except death and taxes. buy the coffin separately and a lot cheaper.

The Coffin Company, based in Whalton, near Morpeth, provides a large range of eye-catching coffins, caskets and urns designed to reflect the personality of the deceased – and turn often bleak funeral ceremonies into a celebration of life. As well as traditional plain wooden, wicker and biodegradable coffins, their web-based catalogue includes themed coffins decorated in union jack, saltire and St George flags, Newcastle United black-and-white stripes and magnificent bespoke designs created to the deceased’s specifications. And because the Coffin Company sells directly to the customer, their prices are a fraction of what you’d expect to pay to a national funeral director. Prices start at just £99, and as well as being available to order online local customers can

studios – and we even had an order from a very famous pop star, although we’ve been sworn to secrecy about that!”

“Our themed and bespoke coffins and urns bring a touch of brightness and individuality to what has traditionally been a very sombre affair.”

The Coffin Company uses a team of artists to create the designs on the coffins, and is keen to unearth and promote innovative new talent from around the world. They are currently championing Finnish artist Janne Parviainen through a special section on the company website, www.coffincompany.co.uk

It’s an approach which has already proved hugely popular since the Coffin Company was launched a year ago, as dozens of satisfied customers have testified in letters of thanks. And their unique coffins are not only in demand from bereaved families. An increasing number of funeral directors are recommending the Coffin Company – and there has also been interest from less obvious sources. “We’ve had a lot of interest from theatrical shows. We’ve already sent around 40 or 50 down to London’s West End and to television

After a year of consolidation, the Coffin Company is now looking forward to expanding in 2012, and intend to increase the number of products available at their online web store to around 150. They also plan to add a facility where people can come for advice about all related matters. “We aren’t looking to completely revolutionise the funeral industry,we just want to give people more of a choice in how they arrange their funerals.”
