Upcoming events: Woodburn Trip Sign-up

As August rolls in, does summer roll out? For many, August marks the beginning of the end of summer. After August, cooler weather rolls in, leaves start changing color, and we gear up for the rainy season. The Farmer’s Almanac says that if August is very hot, we can expect a cold, white summer. Only time will tell! August will see the end of Ramadan on the 18th. Eid al-Fitr, the three-day celebration of the end of a month of fasting, will begin on August 18th. Best wishes to those celebrating Eid!

Varied Mexican trinkets - especially the noise makers - grabbed the attention of the younger attendees.

Mexican Culture Fiesta

An engaging evening of sharing culture! The room was bustling from the moment the doors opened. Hours of preparation hanging elaborate decorations paid off; attendees were awestruck as they entered the room. INTO OSU’s visiting group of Mexican teachers hosted this public event, dubbed the Mexican Culture Fiesta, displaying exceptional aspects of Mexican culture. Included at the event – which was held in the local public library – were Mexican sweets (dulces), delicious Mexican food (sopas) and Spanish language learning games. Several dance performances, some incorporating the whole audience, really had the room dancing! This engaging event really sparked the community’s interest. Well done!

A conga line formed, circling the room in one direction, then reversing!

Several Spanish learning games helped attendees pick up some of the language. Here, Leticia Martinez shows off her board game.

Citlali García danced the jarabe tapatio with Joel Orozco, an OSU graduate student.

Smoke-free campus begins Sept. 1, 2012 OSU is undergoing a major change and will be 100% smoke-free as of September 1, 2012! This means smoking will be banned on all campus property. OSU is joining hundreds of other campuses around the United States in implementing this kind of policy. In an effort to create a more healthy campus, OSU is removing all possibility of secondhand smoke exposure and encouraging smokers to consider ending the habit. This policy complements Oregon’s ban on smoking inside most public indoor businesses, such as restaurants and movie theaters. So what does this mean for INTO OSU employees?

This smoke-free policy’s goal is to create a healthier environment by removing the threat of secondhand smoke exposure, but also to help encourage smokers to quit. To further aid in this effort, OSU is offering students free help to quit smoking, and OSU employees can also get help. For students, this includes a visit with a Tobacco Cessation Coach, nicotine gum or patches and other resources. To get started, call Student Health Services at 541-737-9355.

Starting on September 1, 2012 students, staff, faculty and visitors will not be allowed to smoke on the OSU campus. There will not be any designated smoking areas. The closest place where smoking is not prohibited will be on sidewalks that border the edge of campus. Western Boulevard, which is adjacent to the International Living-Learning Center, is one of these border streets (see map ). These sidewalks are NOT part of the smoking ban. Please be advised that there will be cigarette disposal towers, and that no cigarette debris should ever be left on the ground.
