Glasgow is one of the UK’s most visited cities. Since being awarded the European City of Culture in 1990 and the UK City of Architecture and Design in 1999 the city’s tourism industry has thrived and it now welcome three million tourists every year who come to experience it’s many cultural attractions. The art scene in Glasgow is very prominent and expressions of art and design are found in every area of the city. It is this strong art circuit that gives the city such a unique personality. There are many styles of accommodation in Glasgow but due to the economic growth in the tourism industry there is always room for more. There has recently been a boom in high-quality low-cost hotels, which has revolutionized the hotel industry. The budget market is growing three times faster than the overall hotel market and is set to reach 1.5 billion by 2012.

Recently a new niche of hotels has emerged, they are described as ‘Budget Luxury’ or ‘Boutique & Lifestyle Budget Hotels’. They offer luxury in replacement of unnecessary services, to provide a design experience that is affordable. UK Budget hotel design has become generic and predictable and with high competition between prices, a successful budget hotel needs to stand out and be different. Design a 3 star boutique budget hotel in Glasgow city centre that offers unique accommodation for tourists, with an incorporated Art & Culture centre for the general public. The hotel should hold facilities for guests to sleep, eat and relax. The Art & Culture Centre should cater to the public and the guests, offering spaces for exhibitions, workshops, seminars, music and refreshments.

The concept of the hotel is to directly involve tourism with the art scene within Glasgow. Guests will be part of this cultural hub, and welcomed to participate in workshops and events taking place over their stay. The hotel will be based within a 1960’s building by the river Clyde, formally used by the GPMU for offices. The hotel location is within close distance to the main shopping area, but is also close to many other Art & Cultural centres and galleries, making it part of an existing art circuit. The hotel should aim to attract tourists and the general public who are interested in art and design.

Citizen M - A newly built concept hotel with a strong brand ethos. The design substitutes unnecessary space and facilities for luxury design and technology.

The Glasgow Art Circuit is know for it’s

dynamic contemporary art and consists of a range of interesting venues catering to both the tourism industry and local art and designers. Down by the Clyde hidden within the rough edged street are many small galleries, studios, and art centres housing the up and coming talent that Glasgow is renowned for producing.

The Artto Hotel - A small family run hotel offering modern contemporary design at a low price.

Trongate 103 is open to visitors wishing to look around the galleries, but also provides studio space for printing, and workshop space where they work with children and adults with disabilities. This venue successfully combines facilities for the community while also attracting many tourists.
