across the wake of a passing boat. And despite only having one motor, the Flyer 7 doesn’t seem to suffer too much from the issues that normally affect single-engine set-ups. It was always easy to handle, even at minimum revs, when we tried out manoeuvring going in and out of the harbour. It behaved extremely well in a tight turn. It is agile, it heels just the right amount and the propeller never cavitates. That wasn’t something we could have taken for granted, if, as designers often say, it is more difficult to design a small boat than a mega yacht. The hull of the Flyer 7 can thus be considered one of the success stories. The outboard we had on the transom was the least powerful of the various different engine options.

It was a Suzuki DF developing 150 horsepower, while the maximum power allowed for the boat is 200. And that is another reason why I thought that the hull performed very well. The Suzuki DF150 has variable timing, so that means it has a lot of torque even at low and medium revs. That should in turn mean that it is easy to start planing, and that is indeed the case: I got my stopwatch out and timed planing at four seconds, while it was 23 seconds to get to 32 km/h, which was the most we did during the test. The fuel consumption figures are also very positive. This went from less than twenty at minimum planing speed up to 48 litres an hour needed for top speed. In fuel per mile terms, this comes out at around a constant 1.5 litres. And if litres per mile usage is constant, that means that the hull is well balanced. It moves well at minimum planing speed, when cruising and at high speeds. And with its 170-litre fuel tank, the range is above one hundred nautical miles. Low fuel consumption figures, significant range, good performance and an excellent hull: all the essential ingredients are there. But the Flyer 7 SpaceDeck can also be versatile in terms of how it is fitted out. There is a bimini canopy, a rod holder and a clear cockpit area – which is what fishing fans look for. As an alternative, and in addition to the linear sofa in the stern, you can go for two seats that fold down from the side panels, and rotating seats for the helmsman and assistant. There is also the option of adding a table in the middle of the cockpit. That produces a living area with even more seats than the number of people allowed on board. And the same goes for the bow area. There are two side benches with lockers and a telescopic table which, when lowered, and with all the cushions down, transforms the whole area into a sun pad. Finally, below decks there is a large locker that you get to through a sliding door that is located to the port side of the helm station. If you want you can fit a marine head here. To conclude, the Flyer 7 SpaceDeck isn’t demanding in terms of size, and its width means it can be towed. The price is competitive, not least because you just need one outboard motor. It is a boat that can keep fishing fans happy, or a family that wants to enjoy day trips. What else could you want?
