Don Packwood’s fascination with cars dates back to his childhood in the Wairarapa, when one of the year’s greatest pleasures was an annual trip to the Levin Motor Racing Circuit. There he would study and sketch the cars that fuelled his love of all things automotive. An inherited mechanical engineering background encouraged Don’s wide range of artistic interests. Many hours were consumed with painting, model building and restoring vintage and classic cars. This interest led Don to build his own 1925 Brooklands Special, hand-making most of the components. Don Packwood is acknowleded as one of the world’s finest automotive artists. His work is enjoyed by collectors in the United States, Canada, England, Europe and of course New Zealand. Don has been commissioned by corporate organisations such as BMW New Zealand as well as accepting private commissions. Exhibiting both nationally and overseas, his work has been shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom, and the Melbourne Grand Prix. A life member of the Bruce McLaren Trust, the Possum Bourne Trust own an original work. The ‘Historic Racing Drivers’ magazine have recently appointed Don as their official artist. Don’s passion and understanding of the subject is clearly reflected in his canvases. From the glamour circuits of Monaco, Le Mans, Brands Hatch and Bathhurst he brings to life the roar of the racetrack along with the heat and dust of the rally.

Juan-Manuel Fangio led from his Alfa team-mate and defending champion Giuseppe Farina on a wet track. The two Alfa drivers were on completely different strategies. Fangio pitted while Farina tried to stay out and nurse his tyres. After emerging behind Farina it wasn’t long before Fangio regained first position and went on to record a comfortable victory.
