Young guns
The two young stallions who consolidated this season after promising starts at stud are Lonhro and Fastnet Rock. Lonhro won 11 times at Group 1 level over distances ranging from 1400 to 2000m so understandably much expected of him in his second career. After a slightly slow start which saw his fee reduced from A$60,000, a record price for a new sire at stud in Australia, Lonhro struck back strongly through the 2009-210 season with 12 stakes winners and 2o stakes wins from 173 runners. as a cheap purchase from the December Sale at Tattersalls, Volksraad, a son of Green Desert, has more than fulfilled the hopes Windsor Park Stud. This was his eighth New Zealand title and the last horse to accomplish that feat in New Zealand was the great Foxbridge. This season his major winners in New Zealand included the New Zealand Derby winner Military Move – his 13th Group 1 winner – Veloce Bella and the evergreen Sir Slick, while in Australia he got the Goodwood Handicap (G1) winner Velocitea and his daughter Mexican Rose triumphed at Group level in Singapore. Pins did not have a fully fit El Segundo to help him, but the Australian-bred son of Snippets still crunched some impressive numbers. In New Zealand his daughter
fulfill plans to run in Britain, but he is due to return to stand alongside his sire at Darley’s Kelvinside property in the Hunter Valley. Chelmsford Stakes (G2) winner O’Lonhro has also retired to stud, going to Larneuk Stud in Victoria. As a Group 1 sprinting son of Danehill, much was expected of Fastnet Rock and he has not disappointed; his figures were bordering on exceptional. Better than 50 per cent winners to runners with just two crops to race, Fastnet Rock got nine stakes winners from 118 runners, headed by the Newmarket Handicap winner Wanted, who will stand his first season at Eliza Park Stud in Victoria in 2010
