ISH NEWS Autumn 2011 Special

SECONDARY SCHOOL

Class of 2011

Secondary Newsletter | Issue 2 | October 2011

Dear ISH News Readers, Dear Parents, I can report on an enjoyable MYP graduation evening with happy students receiving their Records of Achievement. More details and photos inside. Similar, the ISH participation in the Saariaho Festival in the Anton-Philipszaal was a great success. A lot of creative potential here at the school!

The next big event at the ISH are our annual Model United Nations with 35 participating schools. For the even bigger THIMUN at the World Forum with 3500 students, ISH has been assigned 3 of the 5 leadership seats, including the Secretary General. Impressive too! Less impressive is the fact that due to ongoing technical problems, we have to postpone the digital publishing of Year 11 grades, planned for today Friday 14 October. We will keep you updated on progress in this, for us slow, field. Concerns have been raised by parents about the traffic situation around school, and concerns by staff around the traffic situation on campus.

Although we are keen to do whatever we can to promote awareness of green issues, the safety of your children is of paramount importance to us. After watching the situation on Friday and noting several concerns myself, we have decided to discontinue the Traffic Free Fridays with immediate effect. However, from Tuesday 25th October, we will make the school campus ‘drop offs only’. There will be no parking within the school grounds, but you will be able to drive in and drop off your children. Barriers will then close at 08:45 in the morning and reopen at 14:30 in the afternoon. If you do need to park, you can use the car park opposite school. This situation will still allow us to use the outdoor learning areas during the school day, hopefully easing the traffic situation at the same time. With best wishes for a relaxing break,

Peter Kotrc

The Saariaho Festival in The Hague was a portrait festival celebrating the musical and visual artwork of the famous Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. Her works were performed by the New European Ensemble, The Hague Philharmonic Orchestra and students from the NJO Summer Academy and The Royal Conservatoire during this three day festival. View www.saariahofestival.nl for full detail. Our talented ISH students took part in the festival on October 7, 2011 when the ISH Ensemble of Contemporary Music performed their own piece in the Anton Philipszaal. All were welcome to hear this music premiere together with students of Year 13 Music performing as part of their internal assessment.

Exploring the World of the Globe

>>CLICK FOR LATEST NEWS

There were many questions explored by Yr 13 students on a recent trip to London’s Globe Theatre which enabled them to experience plays by Shakespeare and his contemporary, Christopher Marlow, in a setting as close as possible to the original. In addition to a guided theatre tour, an exhibition visit and an interactive printing press demonstration, the students were lucky enough to observe a rehearsal of Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’ as the cast took instruction from the director. The two sold-out Globe performances they saw were outstanding. Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ had many laughing virtually from start to finish and it was especially surprising to watch the level of interaction between the audience and actors. Christopher Marlow’s ‘Dr Faustus’ was at least as popular with our group for its challenging themes and striking visual qualities.
