Эта низина у берегов Днепра самим Богом была предназначена для удобной жизни. Недаром, когда Киев испытывал трудности и лежал в руинах, именно сюда стекались горожане, именно отсюда начиналось возрождение. Зажатый между великой рекой и крутыми склонами, Подол образовал свою вселенную, где было уютнее, спокойнее и веселее, чем где бы то ни было в киевской округе…
Спаситель Киева Люди жили здесь издавна. Известный украинский археолог Викентий Хвойка обнаружил в районе Кирилловской улицы стоянку древних людей. На месте Почтовой площади найдены остатки жизнедеятельности IV века. Но более оседлые и правильные поселения возникли на Подоле в IX веке, к которому, собственно, и относится основание Киева. У подножия Замковой горы уже в советское время были раскопаны целые кварталы того времени — деревянные дома, дощатые тротуары… Уже тогда на Подоле находился главный киевский порт. Впрочем, по размерам это все-таки была скорее скромная пристань. Но значение она имела важнейшее, служа одним из пунктов легендарного «пути из варяг в греки». Как это везде бывает, возле порта формировался торгово-ремесленный центр. На месте нынешней Контрактовой площади находилось Торжище — место большого базара и ярмарок. Поселению торговцев и ремесленников требовалось как-то защищаться от возможного вторжения «лихих людей», столь многочисленных и весьма предприимчивых в то время. С северной стороны Подол имел внушительные укрепления. На нынешней карте Киева мы можем видеть такие названия, как Нижний и Верхний Валы. Сейчас это две улицы, разъединенные бульваром. Когда-то здесь тянулись защитные коммуникации, за которым население Подола чувствовало себя в относительной безопасности.
The valley at the Dniper’s banks was created by God to be a place of comfortable life. That is why whenever Kiev fell on hard times and was lying in ruins the valley became the place where the city’s inhabitants gathered and where they started restoring the city and their lives. Pressed on both sides by the river and steep slopes, Podil created its own universe which was cozier, more peaceful and happier than the rest of Kiev vicinity…
Kiev’s Salvation People have lived here since time immemorial. Vikentiy Hvoika, a wellknown Ukrainian archeologist, found a site near Kirillovska Street where ancient people lived. Although remains of human activity dating to the 4 th century have been found at Pochtova Square the more settled and regular habitation locations star ted in Podil in the 9 th century when Kiev was founded. During the Soviet times at the foot of Zamkova Hora whole neighborhoods from those days, with wooden houses and plank sidewalks, were excavated. In those days Podil had already become the site of the main Kiev port. Even though it was just a wharf of a modest size at the time, it was of utmost significance, serving as one of the main points on the legendary trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks. As is usually the case, the area around the port became a trading center. In the vicinity of Kontraktova Square there was a big fair and market place — Torzhishche. The merchants and traders’ settlement had to be protected from the many thieves that used to roam the area doing their dirty business. So the northern side of Podil was heavily fortified. Even on the modern map we can see the names of the streets like Nyzhny Val and Verkhny Val [Translator’s note: Val is Ukrainian for “rampart” or “earthwork”.]. Nowadays these two streets are separated by a boulevard. In the olden times that was where the earthwork fortifications stretched out keeping the people of Podil feeling relatively safe. 58
