Dear guests, 4

For the staff at the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol, 2012 began with an especially good piece of news: on 1 January this year we were accepted into the exclusive circle of “The Leading Hotels of the World”.

A world leader in quality and service

This is not only a great distinction, of which we are incredibly proud, but also a great responsibility for the future. A condition of this membership is that we continue to offer unparalleled levels of service and the highest quality accommodation to our guests. Ultimately, we have only one desire, to provide you with the perfect holiday here on Seefeld’s high plateau.

Preserve nature, preserve quality of life

Our obsession with quality is reflected in the latest phase of renovations, during which we have paid close attention to the use of the finest materials in order to preserve our pristine environment and further reduce our carbon footprint. Our new building insulation is at the cutting edge of technology and the renovation of our swimming pool has also resulted in considerable energy savings.

Service

The first hotels to join from outside Europe were the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, Los Angeles, the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong and the Ritz Carlton, Montreal, thereby creating The Leading Hotels of the World. By the end of 1980 there were 235 Leading Hotels worldwide and regional subsidiaries in the USA, Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America.

A distinction for the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol

A world leader in quality and service “The Leading Hotels of the World” has accepted the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol as a new member. The Leading Hotels of the World is the renowned umbrella organisation of international luxury hospitality, representing 430 of the finest hotels and resorts in the world. Its headquarters are in New York, and there are 22 branches worldwide. The organisation was founded in 1928, when a group of visionary European hoteliers decided to create

an exclusive quality standard under the banner of The Luxury Hotels of Europe and Egypt. The founding members were 38 grand hotels which between them offered a total of 9,000 rooms and suites to a discerning clientele. Membership included such legendary establishments as the Negresco in Nice, Mena House in Cairo and King David Hotel in Jerusalem. Right from the beginning, the Luxury

Berlin, Germany

Hotels of Europe and Egypt under stood the finer points of hospitality: in 1928 the Hotel Ritz in Madrid offered an at the time unimagined luxury of a telephone in every bedroom. In 1971 the Board of Directors widened its portfolio to include nonEuropean hotels, to accommodate the needs of discerning guests who were increasingly travelling worldwide.

Udaipur, India

To become a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, hotels must meet the highest standards of accommodation, service, cuisine, staff and facilities. The Leading Hotels of the World association does not recruit members; interested hotels must apply for membership. After a strict selection and accreditation process, only the best establishments are accepted into the circle of The Leading Hotels of the World. Each member hotel is quality checked every 18 months, when inspectors from Leading Quality Assurance check in anonymously and evaluate their stay against a membership manual, which includes 1,500 quality standards. In this way a hotel can demonstrate its continual upholding of quality standards.

The Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol is very pleased to have passed this very exacting process. We were the first hotel in the Tirol to be awarded 5 star superior status, and membership of The Leading Hotels of the World is further confirmation of the passion and commitment of our staff. At the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol the well being of our guests is the focus of all we do and it is our belief that personal service is the most important feature of a successful holiday. Especially in the hospitality sector, intuitive service, attentiveness and personal dedication are the essential qualities of service personnel. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank every member of the hotel staff most sincerely for their contribution to our success. We are proud to belong to the 430 best hotels in the world, and see this distinction above all as the motivation to raise our quality standards to an unparalleled level. Regular inspections by Leading Quality Assurance will certainly lead us to redouble our efforts. Ultimately, a hotel is not measured by how good it is but by how much better it can become.

Environment

Energy efficiency at the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol

Preserve nature, preserve quality of life Extensive rebuilding measures have significantly increased the hotel’s energy efficiency.

The Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol has been extensively modernised in the last few years

When Dr Hans Liebherr commissioned the construction of the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol in 1981, he had a very special vision: to preserve the beauty of nature for the benefit of future guests. He was determined that the environment should not be harmed by the construction of the hotel. For example 1,200 new trees were planted on ecological compensation areas. In addition the hotel was designed to be

6

heated exclusively by electricity, a novelty at the time. Using electricity produced by low emission fuel gave the hotel a very favourable CO2 balance in comparison with other hotels. The former mayor of Telfs, Helmut Kopp comments: “On its completion the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol was the most environmentally friendly hotel in the Tirol”. It was also of great

importance to Dr. Liebherr that the hotel should be integrated harmoniously into the landscape: the underground garage ensures that parked cars do not detract from the magnificent Alpine panoramas beyond. Of course, technology has made great strides since those days and new measures to protect the environment are constantly being developed. It is

always a particular challenge to bring such a generously proportioned hotel complex up to the latest standards of energy efficiency. However, it does not usually make good economic or ecological sense to rebuild from new, specific renovation measures generally proving more appropriate. Philip Wohlfarth of Zurich architects monoplan explains the fundamental principle: “We evaluate every project for its appropriateness and sustainability. We aim to retain the positive aspects, use the existing structures, and plan for the future as part of a strategy for continuous improvement of the hotel.” In 2005 the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol built its own gas-fired central boiler house with long distance heating, which serves all the surrounding buildings. The hotel can therefore provide all its own heating, cleanly and efficiently.

Between 2007 and 2009 the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol saw major developments and improvements, in particular the renovation of all bedrooms and major sections of the hotel. Wohlfarth notes that high standards were set for the modernisation works: “As a result of these improvements we achieved such a good efficiency rating that we met the strict regulations for energy renovations set by the Province of Tirol in full”. During the renovation, full facade insulation was installed, existing thermal bridges were analysed with thermal imaging cameras and insulated as necessary. The installation of triple insulated glazing throughout the hotel significantly reduced heat loss from the building. Complete replacement of the building’s mechanical services has enabled more efficient supply of hot water. Lower flow pipe temperatures, high-

specification insulation of the plumbing system and state of the art heat recovery systems have also resulted in considerable energy savings. Since renovation the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol has achieved the highest energy classification for heat insulation. Wohlfarth summarises: “We are now achieving a reduction of 496 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum, thereby significantly reducing our carbon footprint”. The next major project in planning is the renovation of the hotel roof, to further improve the energy efficiency of the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol. The hotel continues to intensively research new ecological solutions, explains the architect: “In the future it will be even more vital to think in terms of ecology and sustainability to make our contribution to the preservation of the env ironment”.
