BARCLAYS PREMIERSHIP FIXTURES 09-10

FIFA 10 There’s something in the air, and it’s not just the H1N1 virus. Nope, it’s the unmistakeable whiff of excitement that signals the start of the season and the imminence of a new FIFA game. Below are some hard facts on FIFA 10. After that, we hand you over to some industry experts for some less than concrete predictions for the season ahead… If football is a matter of form and confidence, then FIFA 10 will be an amazing game. The franchise, and its parent label, EA SPORTS, is on a hell of a winning streak, with critical acclaim, sales and even some nice shiny awards all being bagged in the build-up to the release of FIFA 10. As ever, the improvements have come thick and fast, and the details will be covered in the September 11th issue of MCV. But here are a few headlines to be getting on with… FIFA 10 features the first ever true 360º dribbling system. Dribbling is perhaps football’s classic art, possibly one of its lost arts. FIFA10 allows players to be more skilful than ever and find gaps that were previously not possible. Meanwhile, on the training ground, teams can work on customisable set pieces, designing and recording free kicks and corners to unleash in games. Loads of other innovations have been influenced by an unprecedented level of feedback from consumers that helped to shape the FIFA dev team’s wish list and, ultimately, helped to create the best FIFA ever. Whether or not the season ahead turns out to be the best ever rather depends on which team you follow. Over the next 20 pages we map out the fixtures facing all the Premiership clubs, and ask some of their supporters in the industry to predict what will happen between now and May. Enjoy the season, enjoy FIFA 10 and marvel at the never-ending optimism of football fans.

OK, so I stuck my neck out by saying first, but after yet another season of being the annual under achievers this has to be the year. The good news is that Rossicky is actually fit again and we’ll have full seasons out of Eduardo and Arshavin, so that’s almost like signing three new players. A whole season of Arshavin playing will be key to success as he hasn’t yet caught the Arsenal disease of trying to score from within two feet of the goal line. Instead he prefers the shoot on sight approach, which still catches many goal keepers by surprise - just ask Pepe Reina. Estimated league position: 1st Who’ll win the league if you don’t? Finishing above our local rivals is important and a decent run in Europe would be nice. It would be great to see Wolves stay up this time. Last year we did not convert enough home games into wins, that needs to change this year. We also need a few more young English players to complete our collection! It would be nice if we had some Saturday 3pm kick offs – am I the only person who misses this? Expectations are not too high. We will need to get off to a good start to have any chance of staying up and aside from an opening day trip to Old Trafford, there are points to be had in the early fixtures. Some of the new signings are a bit of an unknown quantity with up-and-coming Championship players and a couple of Ecuadorians alongside older heads like Bowyer and Ferguson. They will all need to gel very quickly. If we get relegated but do the double over the Villa it will be regarded by many as a good season! BIRMINGHAM CITY

With nothing but a first full season of anti-football to look forward to, the prospects for this season look fairly grim. The loss of Santa Cruz and home-grown Matt Derbyshire leaves us short up front (please don't play Samba there again Sam!), and with club legend Tugay departed we look devoid of creativity. Add a series of noname signings apart from the prehistoric Vieri on trial, it looks set to be a long, long-ball season indeed, with a minimum of excitement. Two wins against Burnley though and all will be forgiven! For the last few weeks all the talk has been about our star man John Terry. But thankfully it’s ended with us keeping the best defender in the Premiership. Without him it would have been tough winning the league, but now I’m pretty confident and I reckon we’ll get to the Champions League final as well. Man Utd have lost a few key players and it will be interesting to see if Owen settles in. Liverpool are the only other title contenders, but this year Chelsea are shaping up for plenty of silverware! Despite the poor start to last season we again proved that we are the closest challengers to the ‘Top Four’. Hopefully, with a last minute spending spree before the start of the season to bolster the squad, and providing we can keep our key players fit (Yakubu, Arteta, Jagielka, and Cahill to name a few), we will be able to close the gap between 4th and 5th. Seventh last season was a dream. I just hope that the dream continues and we don’t wake to another nightmare season of relegation scares. Hodgson is a clever, clever man (as well as being a dead nice bloke) and as we stand we have signed some decent squad players without letting any of the key players go, so we are in a good place. A few trips to far flung European destinations, a mid-table finish, some wins over the big four, a run in one of the cups and Hull relegated? Now that would make me a happy man come May 2010. I’m not confident. Last season was a bit of a fluke, I think. We need new faces but we can’t seem to get any. Players just don’t want to come. We offered Bobby Zamora £40K per week when he’s worth about £4K, and even then the deal fell through – well, it seems to have, anyway. Unless we get someone who can score us 15 goals a season, I think the writing’s on the wall. Phil Brown’s still the right man for the job. You can’t knock him, he’s just got very little to work with. At the time of writing, Alonso`s future with the club was still not confirmed. If we lose him, we step back, if we keep him there is no excuse for not moving forward. Then, maybe 90 points (86 last season) could win us the league. Does seem like a dream rather than reality, as it’s been so long. On the other hand, we are damn good and kicked ass in nearly all big games last season. If we did win the league, I really do think that we could be the club to beat for a good few seasons. Would be rude of me not to mention the new boy Glen; Rafa may have got a good one there. And of course King Kenny’s back. My hero as a kid. Used to call myself Kenny Gurdlish in the playground! Unlikely world beater, or laughing stock? Whichever, we’re starting to resemble a chavvy Northern lottery winner: upsettingly gaudy, but with an endearing ability to make the stuffy blue bloods jealous. Sure, Mark Hughes hasn’t bought Burberry tiling or platinum rims with his windfall, but his over-excited grabbing of endless strikers certainly showcases a troubling, ‘loadsa money’ disposition. He’ll have to land at least one international class centre back just to be in with a shout of keeping his job. The good news is we’ve already got too much firepower to miss out on a UEFA Cup spot – so long as Eastlands is big enough to house all of those YSL earrings and money-chomping Hummers. I can only see Chelsea and maybe Liverpool challenging us for the title. Fergie is no mug and will bring in fresh new talent. We are the most successful Premier League club, having won the title ten times, and this season it will be 11 – and we will be the most successful English club once and for all. It’s been a time of transition with Pompey balancing the books and the first team squad almost unrecognisable from the one which started the 08/09 season. If Pompey get in some new faces, particularly Stephen Hunt, Amir Zaki and Ross McCormack, then they could be looking at a decent campaign, but the loss of Campbell, Davis, Crouch and Johnson is a big one. It looks as though a tough scrap against relegation beckons, but the atmosphere at Fratton Park should mean a decent home record and will probably be enough to see us stay up. I was pleased with last season and we’ve all got a lot of faith in Tony Pulis. We do need to sign a few more players, though. So far we’ve got Dean Whitehead from Sunderland and that’s it. We’re not exactly setting the transfer market alight. We need to strengthen the midfield, particularly on the left. But I think we’ll be okay. A cup run would be nice, but survival will do me. I’m getting more confident as Bruce’s signings come in. I’m looking forward to seeing Lorik Cana from Marseilles, definitely. But I still think we need to add width. Kenwyne Jones is great in the air, so we need players who can stick it on his head. There’s no derby match this year (ha ha), so we just need to concentrate on avoiding a relegation scrap and having a good run in the cup. I’d be happy with that. With Harry ‘We Had Three Points From Eight Games When I Took Over’ Redknapp now in charge, what could possibly go wrong? I have tried to predict what we will do for three years with no success whatsoever. So this year I will not be bold; I will be completely realistic. I think the league will be a challenge this year. But I comfortably predict we will have it wrapped up by the end of April. The League & FA Cups are a little bit different. But I believe Harry will sign up ‘Er Indoors and Louise. He will then field them with the youngsters to blood them in and we will storm both cups. Easy. I would like to thank my son for these predictions. He is a bit biased. Another season of gentle achievement as the 'Zola Project' beds in. A litany of injuries meant we finished last season like a marathon runner in a suit of armour, but with Behrami, Collison, Parker and Collins back and the addition of some flair with Jimenez we should have some real momentum this year. We need some more forwards, though, because Ashton’s bones are made of china and while Carlton Cole is a workhorse he’s far from the thoroughbred we need. In general I’m more optimistic than I’ve been for years. Following a season of mid-table security, a former hero returns as manager with an impressive CV, and brimming with ideas, he promises, of sexy attacking football. So you’d imagine the coming season is something to look forward to. Not so. Since January, Wigan have shipped £36M worth of talent and spent around £5M replacing it. Unless Roberto Martinez turns out to be Gandalf in disguise, there’s no way we’ll repeat last season’s 11th spot. So, once again, survival is the goal, but I expect we’ll stay up, because Burnley, Portsmouth, Wolves, Birmingham, Stoke and Hull look like they’re going to be much, much worse. I’m really looking forward to the season and I think it’s going to be a good one. It’ll be pretty open at the top and the bottom and there’ll be plenty of shock results. Last time we were up we beat Man Utd 1-0, so the same again will be nice. With the addition of Kevin Doyle we have a striker who has scored at the highest level and this will allow Ebanks-Blake to bed in as it might take a few games for him to get used to the pace of the Premier League. I do think we’ll survive, but if we don’t I’ll get over it and I’ll still be a proud Wolves fan.
